Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B00BMKFPIO

There’s nothing On Top managing editor Cynthia “Starr” Starling hates more than Christmas. With an important deadline looming, plus her dreaded Christmas Day birthday, Starr just wants the holiday to end. But when she wakes up Christmas Eve night to the ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future—all in the form of the super-hot Matt Landry, the new art director—she knows she’s in for a long night.

Matt is the one person on Starr’s team she can’t boss around and the only one she doesn’t need to. He’s also her employee and totally off limits, even if he does seem interested. Though he’s seven years younger and all kinds of forbidden fruit, he’s the form the Powers That Be decided she’d be receptive to.

Because they have a message for her: learn the true meaning of Christmas spirit or risk being alone for the rest of her life.

This was a cute short Christmas novella that I picked up for free as a Goodreads Deal. I always enjoy fairy tale retellings and remakes of classic stories, and this one hangs pretty close to the original "A Christmas Carol" with our MC Star in the role of Scrooge and the three ghosts of Christmas past. It was a cute remake set in modern New York that was a nice short read to get in the holiday spirit.

Cynthia “Starr” Starling has a reputation with her employees and it’s not a good one. It gets worse around Christmas time since she has a Christmas Day birthday. It makes her hate the holiday even more.

To top it all off, she finds herself attracted to one of her employees, Matt Landry. Not only does he work for her, but he’s a few years younger. He’s definitely off limits, but she can’t help think about him all the time.

Then, on Christmas Eve, Starr gets a visit from the ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. It changes everything.

This is a sweet novella. It’s a quick read, which is nice when everyone is busy this time of year. If you want to step away from the madness of the holiday season for a couple of hours, this book will be a happy escape.

Another take

Yet a other take on a tired old tale. Of course you can predict the ending. Not very original, nor particularity clever. The Muppets version was far more entertaining.

I very much I loved the first story in Hope Tarr's brand new Suddenly Cinderella series (Operation Cinderella was one of my favourite reads of 2012), so when I heard that there will be a special holiday novella in the series I couldn't have been happier and more excited!

In this holiday novella Hope Tarr gives a modern and romantic retelling of Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol, that I found both very entertaining and enjoyable.

A Cinderella Christmas Carol is the story of Macie's (the heroine of the 1st book) uptown workaholic single magazine editor boss, Cynthia "Starr" Starling. Starr is unhappy and stressed out by work, she's not looking forward to the holidays and the days off as she knows how much work is still to be done. She is pretty much hated by her employees as she is a strict and demanding, perfectionist boss. I thought that despite the quite heavily laid characterization Starr was a heroine many readers could understand and relate to. She may be far from ideal, but most of us have been where she is.

Despite Starr being the modern Scrooge of this story I found her a likeable character I felt for. Hope Tarr did a great job by showing us that despite her tough businesswoman persona Starr had a more vulnerable and insecure side, and that deep down she just wanted to be loved, like all of us.

Matt is the only employee of Starr who not only does not hate or criticize her, but to the contrary understands the pressure she is under and defends her. He sees something in her that noone else, maybe not even Starr is aware of, and he finds her a remarkable woman worthy of his love. I found Matt a very humble and kind-hearted man, a wonderful counterpart to Starr.

Through a dream-sequence Starr visits four scenes (the past, present and two potential futures) and realizes what really matters in life.

Verdict: A Cinderella Christmas Carol was a perfect modern spin on Dickens' classic holiday story. With a delightful hero and a relatable heroine, this heart-warming story packed some delicious steam! ;-)

A Cinderella Christmas Carol is a wonderful holiday novella and I can't wait to read the next stories in Hope Tarr's Suddenly Cinderella series!

I liked the second installment in the Suddenly Cinderella series, even though I’m not a big fan of A Christmas Carol itself.

This second book/novella is focused on Starr finding love. In the first book, Operation Cinderella, Starr came off being a true witch. I’m not sure if I liked her or not. With A Cinderella Christmas Carol, you actually get to understand Starr a little better. It turns out she’s not that bad a person; she’s just a little lost.

Starr is an almost thirty-five year-old single woman living in New York. Due to the way she grew up, she’s all about working hard, having money and possessions to show status. Since she works hard, she expects everyone else to work just as hard, if not harder. She has yet to realize that in order to get people to work for you and respect you, you can't rip them apart and embarrass them. It turns out Starr has no friends outside of work. Well, let me rephrase that....The only person close enough to Starr to be considered a friend either from or outside of work was Macie Graham, who left On Top after a job assignment didn’t go the way they planned. Starr feels betrayed because of everything she feels she’s done for Macie. She doesn’t think Macie should have left, but in actuality, she probably would have fired Macie because of the assignment failure.
Starr and Macie haven’t spoken with each other since the day Macie quit. Macie has made several attempts at reaching out and contacting Starr, but Starr refuses to talk to her. Being the person that she is, Macie still remembers to send Starr a present for her birthday, a pair of crimson-covered velvet vintage Saks Fifth Avenue heels.

My one complaint about the book is that I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about Matt Landry. You get a sense of his character and him as a person via the fact that his form is the ghost who takes Starr on her Christmas Eve journey. I just wanted a litte more.

As with A Christmas Carol, Starr gets to revisit a Christmas past, her present Christmas, and a future Christmas or two. She gets to remember what she once loved and what once made Christmas special to her. She also gets to see Christmas and what her life could be like if she changes or doesn’t change.

This was a well rounded, complete story. It just had me wanting more than what I got. I’m disappointed that the God-Parents didn’t make an appearance, but they could have been “The Powers That Be”.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is: “Not everything is measured by how much it does or doesn’t cost. It’s the love we put into things--into each other--that matters the most. That’s what Christmas is all about.”

Overall, it’s a good story and fits in very well with the first book in the series.

This was an interesting twist on A Christmas Carol. Same premise: Christmas past, present and future is shown to a somewhat bitter (putting it mildly) Starr on Christmas Eve. The twist comes in the form of a ghost who looks just like Matt Landry, the magazine art director Starr can't stop thinking about.

Starr is a woman who is driven to exceed and not be in a situation like her mother was. That drive causes her to cut herself from everyone and focus on the bottom line. Needless to say, Starr doesn't have friends and her co-workers don't really like her. So what's it going to take to get Starr to see that she needs to make a drastic change her life before she becomes a crabby old cat woman? Enter the ghostly apparition of Matt Landry. It may not really be Matt, the art director at her magazine who she secretly has a crush on, but he's about to show her a condensed version of Christmas' past, present and future with the hopes that this year Starr will start to believe.

Starr is definitely not a woman who is very likable at the beginning of the story. But through her journey and the sly comments of ghostly Matt, we can see just how Starr got to be the person she is and who the one person is that could change Starr's outlook, both personally and professionally. In the end, Starr has to make the tough decision to continue on the path she's on or to take a chance that her life won't end up like her mother's.

If you're someone who enjoys A Christmas Carol, this is definitely going to be a story right up your alley. Hope Tarr does a great job of putting a romantic twist on the old tale and turning Starr into a character you really like at the end.

I have really come to like this series the first book Operation Cinderella and even though this is a short novella it didn’t lack anything, for me, a great Christmas read with a new twist on Scrooge.
Cynthia Starling or Starr is what she prefers is the hard nose managing editor of On Top magazine. She is tough, ruthless and demands nothing but perfection from her employees and if that means they have to work the day after Christmas well so be it.

This short read takes Starr on a journey of Christmas past, present and future and how such a humble upbringing she had as a child has brought her into this spoiled bitter adult to exactly how her co-workers feel about her. Then of course her future, she has a chance at one which is very promising or one that is actually downright scary!

Matt Landry the magazines young hot art director appears to help Starr on this “trip” but it becomes obvious there is more to him than just a tour guide. Although Starr has feelings for the younger man she is his boss and there could never be anything more, so she keeps telling herself that. When it becomes apparent that he may play an important part in her future Starr has some changing to do.

Armed new knowledge Starr decides to take her future in her own hands and right a lot of wrongs.

Always wanting more, I look forward to the next book in the series and hopefully get a glimpse of Starr and Matt.

A Cinderella Christmas Carol is a fun new twist to the classic Christmas Carol, but with romance of course. ;)

If you read the first book in this series (Operation Cinderella) you already know Starr and how much of a Scrooge she is. But if you haven’t don’t worry you can read it later too.

Starr is the managing editor for On Top magazine. After her top editor Macie Graham left the magazine Starr has been a little behind schedule on the magazine. Now with dreaded Christmas Birthday fast approaching she can’t understand why people don’t get that meeting the deadline is more important than just sitting at home. So she denies all requests for time off and demands her entire team show up at work on December 26.

Matt has is the new designer for On Top, and after the recession they really need his talent. But the attraction between Starr and Matt in undeniable, as is the age gap between them, she is seven years older than him and his superior. Those are more than enough reasons for her to not act on the chemistry.

But like a good Christmas Carol there will be a ghost that will show Starr the error of her ways and the two possible endings for her future. It is up to her what her life will be, but she will either remain on her current path or correct it and make a better possible ending.

If you like a good Christmas story, this novella is for you. It is short, fun and sweet, so it makes for a perfect quick read.

A Cinderella Christmas Carol is without a doubt a fun twist on a Christmas Classic.

Cynthia Starling (Starr) would definitely fit the part of Scrooge, yet she probably doesn't see herself that way. With the help of a spirit guide who is in the image of Matt Landry, who is drool-worthy. As Starr and "Matt" go on a merry adventure to see if Starr can have a change of heart.

At the beginning I said it was a fun twist on Christmas classic and it wouldn't be a Cinderella story without some magic shoes. I really did like this quick read. I mean who doesn't love A Christmas Carol, I mean the story shows how to find the true meaning a Christmas. However, I really did appreciate this modern day read of A Christmas Carol. So, if you are looking for a novella with a A Christmas Carol theme, you might want to checkout A Cinderella Christmas Carol. May you all find Christmas joy this month and in your reads.

Christmas time always brings the crazy out of everyone. People get moody and become grinches. For Starr she has it all but she hates Christmas time. Not only is it her birthday but she hates everything about it. To make matters worse she has a new art director that she is hot for Matt and she knows she can't go near him because he is the forbidden fruit.

On Christmas Eve Starr is visited by three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future and the ghost is none other than Matt the forbidden fruit! As he shows her the error of her ways she is determined to change her ways. She starts on Christmas when she wakes up. This is a novella full of love and happiness and very fitting for the holidays.

I have to say that Entangled has really cornered the market with it's authors and the great stories you get from them. I have never ever read stories that have me going out and searching for more books to read but Entangled has done that for me and I hope it will do it for you!

A Cinderella Christmas Carol is a holiday novella in the Suddenly Cinderella series by Hope Tarr. I haven't yet read the first book in the series, Operation Cinderella, but I plan to now! This novella is centered around Starr who is all about work and not a lot about fun. Starr is cast as the Scrooge of Christmas time. Christmas Day, and her birthday, hold little meaning for her anymore so she is in need of her own personal Christmas ghost. Definitely a take on the Charles Dicken's classic, this version is full of humor, too. And how could you have a "Cinderella" story without a great pair of shoes, too?!

I randomly picked this up on Amazon after seeing it was free. I'm super behind on my Goodreads challenge and wanted a quick read to bolster it. I'd probably have asked for my money back at 43% if I'd paid for this book though.

For a start, it had nothing to do with Cinderella. It was a very predictable rehash of A Christmas Carol, where "Starr" is Scrooge. There were some vintage shoes, but other than Starr receiving them on Christmas Eve, there's no proper connection with them and the Christmas Spirit showing up. Totally didn't need them in the story.

As for the different time scenes? How predictable can you get? The author even fell back on the crazy cat lady stereotype.

One thing really pissed me off, though. It was a already bad enough the love interest was Starr's employee (inappropriate much?), but it is NOT sexy for a man to punch another man for making a joke, even a nasty one. That's boorish and demonstrates a lack of control. You won't be getting all hot and flustered when he turns those fists on you, Starr.

So two stars for being ok-ish, but ultimately not great.

Cute and quick. I have little sympathy for Scrooges IRL though, so while I was happy at Starr's change of heart and generosity at the end, the Ghost of Christmas Present scene kinda turned me off her. I know I was supposed to be cheering for her and glad Matt defended her, but I admit I was cheering for the employees' plan instead to rebel. So while Starr did redeem herself in the end, I kinda wish there was more of a build-up to it to completely win me over.

I was also meh about the 'bad' Christmas future. Partly because

Starr is a workaholic and expects the same of everyone else too. Her birthday is also on Christmas and as a result of her childhood really hates her birthday (and Christmas). This was an okay take on the Christmas Carol. I liked seeing a female boss (and her liking an employee, but not wanting to act on her attraction). I do think the whole thing about Starr being this bitchy boss was overdone (she doesn't expect someone to do something she wouldn't do herself- how many bosses are like that?). Overall okay. No sex, kissing only for those that like clean romances.

Cute

Cute quick Christmas read. Really enjoyed Matt and Starr's connection in both the spirit and real life. I would've given this 5 stars but it was a bit too short. I would've enjoyed a little more build up of the characters. Would still recommend this book for anyone with an hour to sit in front of the Christmas tree and looking for a bit of good Christmas cheer!

Another mediocre Christmas story. Personally, I didn't like the Christmas past, present, and future aspect to this story. The only "Cinderella" aspect to this story were some sparkly Saks Fifth Avenue antique shoes.

But it was cute and it turned out nice and sweet in the end which is why I gave it three stars. The main female character got over her hatred for Christmas and fell in love.

This was a cute Christmas story to read during a lunch break or when you have a spare hour. It is a short story that will enchant if you love a Christmas Carol.

This is a new to me author and follows another book in a series. You don't have to read the first book to comprehend this story. It is a clean Christmas story that really anyone can read.

I’m pretty tired of Christmas Carol retellings. You can’t improve on the original anyway. But the price was right (free), so I decided to try it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it better than most of them.

I had higher expectations. I had different expectations- I expected romance and a gradual build on the relationship. We got nothing of that. It's cute, but uninspired and unoriginal- following the typical plot line for Christmas carol.

Decent story

I did not like starr, and I could see why most people hated her and I get the whole Christmas of past, present and future teaches you to change mistakes but it all seemed to fast and unreal for me. I don't think it's horrible but not great for my taste

A short take on the Dicken's classic but somehow I expected more (not sure what). For most of the story (which is very short) you don't even see the real Mark interact with Starr, which to me is a deal breaker for a romance.
