I do very much believe that we, as writers, graft on to our characters not specific experiences per se (tho sometime we do), so much as the emotional charge associated with those experiences and memories. In the course of my career, I've written about dashing pirates and brave soldiers, prostitutes and princesses--and a gamut of characters between. Apart from the 'brave soldiers,' I don't know m/any of the aforementioned. But like all of us, I do know what it feels like to love someone who doesn't (seem to) return that sentiment, to want something or someone so badly that it's blinded me to the richness of blessings already in hand, and to crawl out of the darkness resident inside us all and climb spindle by spindle toward the light. Mysterious? Not hardly. Human--yes, most definitely. If we can write characters that let the reader connect to their humanity, embrace their darkness and their light, and do so in engaging and authentic ways, then we as authors have done our job and done it well. It's been years since I last picked up a Daphne du Maurier novel - and reading her "Frenchman's Creek" brings home what a great pity that is! Richly set in the author's beloved Cornwall (almost a character in itself), Frenchman's Creek is, at its cor ...more

“I have never paid for fornication, and I don't intend to begin with you. When you come to me, and come to me you shall, you shall do so of your own accord and wholly free of all commerce and custom.”
Hope C. Tarr, Claimed by the Rogue

“You can tell a lot about a person’s character over the phone. Not everything, but a lot. It’s not always what they say but what they don’t say that’s the most telling,”
Hope C. Tarr, Operation Cinderella

“You would fare far better with a lover who makes you laugh than one who makes you curse - and cry," he added, stepping to the cone of colored light.

Beyond mortified, Phoebe dashed a quick hand across her damp eyes, hoping he might at least miss that much of her shame. "Sir, you should have made your presence known."

One dark brow arched upward, "I believe I am doing just that.”
