Brama was once a thief who dreamed of riches. Now he’s the Torn Man, a broken soul who could have all the riches he wants, except he no longer yearns for it. He’s chosen instead to live his life in the poorest quarter of Sharakhai with the very creature who tortured him mercilessly, a powerful ehrekh known as Rümayesh.
Brama’s life changes forever when he meets Jax, a foreign noble hoping to escape the assassins sent to kill her and her brother. Brama has feared to use Rümayesh’s power, but asks her now to help save Jax from her fate. Rümayesh, who seems curiously fascinated by Jax, agrees.
Brama has little time to wonder over Rümayesh’s sudden and unexpected interest, for his fate soon becomes entangled with Jax’s. As the assassins close in, Brama fights to save both Jax and her errant brother, preventing him from focusing on what may be the biggest threat of all: Rümayesh herself.

This is short and sweet novella about one of the side characters in the Sharakhai series that fills in some details and makes for a good story. It's a quick read, but well worth having on your bookshelf if you enjoy the main series.
A short story that follows the events in "Of Sand and Malice". This story focuses on Brama and the being that is imprisoned within the sapphire that he wears as a necklace. It is a short adventure regarding two people escaping assassins, and involved the degree of control Brama has over the demon in the crystal and himself. Often, it is narrated from the demon's point of view. In spite of the fact that it is a short novella, a lot happens. Good read.
Loved it. It’s always interesting to see back stories from characters that appear in the main series and this is no exception. What’s really interesting is the POV of Rümayesh. Not what I was expecting but it gave me greater insight into her motivations whereas in the main series, she seemed a bit one more one note.
Not that I much interested in Brama's character, however I felt that I should read this novel before jumping into book three of The Song of Shattered Sands series, as it was recommended by many people. It was a good and quick-pass story, I guess, Brama will show up in "The Veil of Spears" and maybe even will play a key role in the book' events.
This is the second novella about Brama and his partnership with Rümayesh the demon. The first being Of Sand And Malice Made.
It fleshes out his backstory and is worth reading before you get into book 3, A Veil of Spears, where Brama runs a charity saving Black lotus addicts. He becomes a pivotal character.
It was great to return to a character previously seen in another novella, with a good addition to the characters continuing story line. Though due to its short length and quick addition of new characters it was difficult to become attached to any of them.
Great story told from the point of view of the ehrekh Rumayesh, we see Brama's change after the events of the prequel novella personally i found Brama really interesting and i hope that i see more of him on With blood upon the sand which i plan on reading next.
Its a simple, quick story that gives some insight into Bram and what happened with the ekrim. Its 2.3 but Bram appears in book 2 already healing people so it must have happened sometime before book 2.
