Ok, so I can read a young adult book with no real sex in it as good as anyone. My problem is when a book has two naked people on the cover who are vampires and adults. I feel like I was totally cheated here!! The book felt a lot like a vampire:the masquerade novel and was kind of unfulfilling. Cliffhanger ending, no smut, the only thing that kept me going was my love of vampire romance and Dimitri's wit.

I really wanted to rate this book higher, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I really enjoyed the story (thank everything for VAMPIRES THAT ARE ACTUALLY VAMPIRES), but I had some difficulty reading due to some grammatical strangeness.
Primarily it was Valentine using the word "shall" somewhere in the neighborhood of, oh I don't know, constantly? Yeah, I'm going to go with constantly. Replacing every third word with shall does not make a character sound more "vampire-y" it makes him sound like a driveling idiot.
Also, "forwards". My goodness, really?! At least once on every page "forwards" appears to destroy an otherwise decent sentence. "She leaned forwards in her chair." Did she really? I was sort of expecting that she would lean forward, but whatever. I suppose she could do it forwards if she wants.
Clearly I found these things very distracting, but I SHALL repeat myself: I did enjoy the story itself, I just didn't enjoy having to look beyond its lack of proofreading. I am not sure yet if I look FORWARDS to the rest of the series (See, I can do it too!).

Felicity Heaton creates an intriguing premise of vampire society in Prophecy: Child of Light. It is based on the bloodline trope. In essence, a vampire house where a vampire can belong to, that is led by one vampire, with each house having certain powers. There are seven pure bloodlines. All vampires were humans, which means you can be turned into a vampire in this world. The vampires that are not part of the bloodlines are suggested to be weaker, and the houses see them as pests that the vampire hunters are exterminating. Yes, there are human vampire hunters. There are also werewolves, witches, and inter-demon couplings.

Valentine is a guard to House Aurorea with ambition to become a Law Keeper - a prestigious position. One night, as he is out to kill a hunter that had taken the lives of vampires from his house, he comes across Prophecy, a Chosen Daughter of House Caelestis.

Prophecy decides to sneak out one night. She feels stifled and wants to hunt. When Valentine comes across her, she has just finished her first kill and in one move that sets their destiny in motion, bites her.

The action of the story is about a prophecy that says that a vampire would be born during eclipse season that would bring the destruction of all vampires. However, there is disagreement on whether this vampire will bring destruction or bring salvation to the vampire race.

When Valentine bites Prophecy, he receives visions from her blood. He tells his lord about her, but he knows by his actions he will condemn Prophecy to death - and that by his hands, as his lord instructs him to kill Prophecy. The two houses were in a truce but are now backsliding into war.

Valentine, going against his house, kidnaps Prophecy in order to learn more about the prophecy and to find out who her mother was, because Prophecy is not what she seems to be. Much of the story is about them travelling from Prague across Europe to find out more information. From London, Venice, Paris, and a few other locations, they are on the road to figure out what exactly is Prophecy's destiny.

With two naked people on the cover and a meet-cute that happens within the first chapter or so, I was excited by this story. On a personal taste level, I dig the idea of noble vampire houses with special powers, and I also have been more curious about vampire-vampire couples. I thought to myself, is this going to be my new Blackthorn? It seemed like it was going that way that Heaton dripped more information that added layers to the world. It seemed like it with the tension that was building between Valentine and Prophecy.

However, I was disappointed that the action of the plot overtook the romance, especially with a cover like that, and especially when it is labeled a paranormal romance. The romance was still there, and while there were some erotic bites here and there, there was only one kiss. This may be ok with you, and I would recommend trying this out if this does not bother you. It reminded me of Underworld, with its vampire mansions, and vampire on werewolf fight scenes. Also when the vampires shifted into their true face, I totally pictured the vampires in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer.

I enjoyed the first three books and I hope the Author continues to write books under this Series.
Upper and Lower Class Vampires, I liked the distinction.
There are 7 Superior Vampire Bloodlines
anything else is Inferior.
I liked the fact that the Vampires in this Series were not
"dead to the world" when the sun comes up.

The suns weakens them and they usually sleep during the day but
they still can move around indoors.
I like the fact that the Vampires can bond and mate in this series and
if they do,
they can sense their mate's emotions and
also sense when they are in trouble.

This series has an intricate social system with laws and regulation.
Each bloodline has Guards that protect members of their bloodline and
they also have a special type of guard
called the Law Keepers.
The Law Keepers are stronger than regular guards and they keep the order of all vampires,
when they finally have to step in the punishment
is usually death of a vampire.

The Seven Pure Bloodlines:

1.)
the Validus (The Mighty) are almost treated as royalty.
This bloodline is seen as the Leader of the Pure bloodlines.
They have "Royal Purple Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
My Favorite Character is Hyperion with Ineru as second place.

2.)
the Caelestis (The Heavenly) bloodline have become one of the most peaceful.
They have "Emerald Green Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
My Favorite Character is Prophecy.

3.)
the Aurorea (The Dawn) bloodline
They have "Dark Blue Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
My Favorite Character is Valentine.

4.)
the Tenebrae (The Darkness)
They usually don't mix with the other bloodlines.
They have "Black Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
My Favorite character is Venturi.

5.)
the Vehemens (The Violent)
Violent by name and by nature,
they are responsible for most vampire hunter deaths.
They have "Blood Red Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
My Favorite character is Lincoln.

6.)
the Venia (The Graceful)
they are usually a calm and peaceful bloodline more interested in politics and democracy than violence and bloodshed.
They have "Ice Blue Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
My Favorite character is Jascha and Marise.

7.)
the Nocens (The Wicked) are the entrepreneurs of the seven pure bloodlines.
They have "Fire Orange Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.
I don"t have a Favorite character for this bloodline,
the author doesn't mention any specific character, not yet anyway.

- - The Lower Class Vampires - -
The weaklings, or the lower class bloodline,
is seen as a type of pest by the seven pure bloodlines.
They are weaker, slower and less socially structured than the Seven elite bloodlines.
Their enemies are the vampire hunters as well as the pure bloodlines.
They have "Yellow Eyes" when they are in their Vampire Guise.

In this series there are Vampire Hunters fighting the Elite bloodlines and the Elite fighting the lower class Weaklings.
There is so much going on but that is what makes it so interesting,
Who to Fight?
Who to Trust?
Who to Love?

It is obvious that the Author has given much thought to this Series and
I impatiently await the new books.

I was looking forward to this as I have read another book by this author before, but was kind of dissapointed when I reached the end. Better make that part one of the book, because although this is really really long, the story line does not get resolved in the end and you are left hanging with cliffhangers on all the major plot points. The romance portion was actually more chaste than most young adult romances are. The cover of the book is very misleading. If you are fine with that you will most likely enjoy the rest of the story.

Language: There are occasional typos, which I can live with. But I would have happily cut half of the inner monologues. They were annoyingly repetitive. And I don't mean that something gets picked up a couple of chapters later, which is ok for me if it doesn't happen too often. This was one paragraph following the other. It made me track back, because I thought I must have fallen asleep reading, but then found out that this was in fact all on the pages. If these repetitions had been edited out, this would have been a 4-5 star book for me and I would have bought the sequels for sure, because the characters and the story were really compelling. As it is, I'd rather not.

This was a pretty good read Prophecy is a vampire who has been locked up in her home all her life. When she asks her mother when she'll be allowed to hunt with the others in their family, she is told only that her time will be soon. Impatient, she sneaks out, meeting Valentine. Valentine being a fellow Vampire. A forbidden fellow vampire as he belongs to a different bloodline. The rules are very clear in this vampire world. Vampires do not consort with vampires of differing bloodlines. Valentine will have to choose between staying true to his own family by killing Prophecy or risking his own life (and hers) to find out which version is the truth. This was my first time reading this author and while this book did have a lot of action it's not the sort of book that I read often. The book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling this book does leave off with a cliffhanger and I am not sure that I will read the next book. I did give this book 4 stars because it did hold my attention.

I think I'll start this review with what I didn't like. It felt as though there was some questionable editing. Not something I usually notice, errors happen, even with good editors. Humans make and miss mistakes no matter how perfect we'd like them to be and who am I to complain, I'm neither an editor nor a writer. Still, when *I* am noticing them, it's probably a problem. (Ex. "She looked around her, hers eyes darting over every face...." Hers eyes?).

Also it felt like the author struggled to find words at times. I was starting to get a serious case of déjà vu about the hundredth time that she knitted certain characters brows to express an emotion. I was also left wondering how many time one could intimate something. There were times that things like this made me want to finally just say: you can use other words. It's actually unfortunate as I do feel that those things distracted from a fairly decent story. Which leads to what I did like, the story itself.

Prophecy is a vampire who has been locked up in her home, for... well she doesn't seem to know how long. In fact, she doesn't seem to know much of anything, including why all of the other vampires get to hunt whereas she does not. Except in their case, it appears they may not have a say in the matter, as we quickly learn that perhaps her name is not just a name. There is a prophecy and depending on who you ask it's either about the fate of vampires or maybe of the entire world. And yes, Prophecy is smack dab in the center of said prophecy. The problem with this prophecy is that there are two takes on it. Valentine will have to choose between staying true to his own family by killing Prophecy or risking his own life (and hers) to find out which version is the truth.

And now onto what I'm on the fence about. Generally when reading a series I like for the book to be its own book. Sure, there will be continuing story lines, but each book should stand on its own. This is not really that. It ends with a major cliffhanger. I'd prefer that not to happen until later in the series once I'm more invested in it. I feel as though I HAVE to keep reading, like it or not, as this adventure isn't yet done. Luckily, despite its flaws I really do care about the characters enough to WANT to know what happens, otherwise I'd be ticked that I'd have to buy the next book if I want to know about how the adventure from this book ends, not to mention the fate of a major character is left up in the air.

This was an alright read. The story was okay. The characters were not that interesting and I was not able to connect with them. I thought that they were okay. I do not dislike them or love them, they were just meh characters. I wish that there was more characterization development. Also, I thought that the story could have been more interesting. I did think the ending was good. Overall, an okay read.

I was very pleased with this first book in the Prophecy trilogy. In fact, the leisurely, steady development of the plot and the sense of impending danger, deepening mystery, sweeping romance, and potential paradigm shift that starts building intensity as the book progresses left me feeling that on the merits of the plot alone, this trilogy could reach epic tale proportions. I didn't mind at all that this isn't a completely encapsulated novel, or that it ends with a rather significant cliffhanger...of course, I loathe cliffhangers in general and the only reason I'm perfectly okay with it in this instance is because I've already bought the second and third book in the trilogy and know I'm only a couple of Kindle clicks from immersing myself back into the story of Valentine and Prophecy. I fear I wouldn't be nearly as accepting otherwise.

One of the things I found particularly appealing about Prophecy: Child of Light (Vampires Realm, #1) is that Heaton has been able to successfully walk a delicate line with her characters. Her vampires are not fluffy-bunny friendly, by any means. They hunt and kill humans. Most of the fearsome fangies in this world think of humans as little more than vermin who need to be exterminated (though in Valentine's and Prophecy's case, they're more ambivalent when they're not hungry). I recently read a book that I detested when the author attempted to do the same because the author of that particular book wrote a tedious character bemoaning for most of the book all the morality issues of the killing of humans. Well...there were other reasons I wasn't fond of that book, too, but that was a big part of it. In contrast, the way Heaton was able to adroitly illustrate the unforgiving and predatory nature of her vampires yet keep them completely sympathetic was a very nice treat. And Valentine, with his rigid dedication to his family line and more than a couple centuries of the stoic life of a hunter of hunters under his belt, and Prophecy, the naive ingenue (relative to the rest of her species, of course) with a confusing past and troubled future, were definitely sympathetic. I thoroughly enjoyed the slow, very organic development of their characters and their relationship. For me, that was really the driving force of the book.

The story itself, the plot for this first chapter of the trilogy, also developed with a nice, slow pace, allowing the reader to spend a lot of time getting to know the characters and Heaton's world. In a lot of ways, I appreciate that. So many books I read have to rush through character and world development and plot set up in the race to some big conflict to get it all resolved in one book, or for longer series, a large series arc is paired with smaller single-book arcs or plot threads throughout and that series arc can get a bit lost. This story arc is about Prophecy's prophecy, and in three books, that's the story that will be told, so it's afforded the writer time to slowly unfurl her grand scheme for the arc a little at a time without getting otherwise distracted. And I felt that the pacing was very well done and the progression of the plot felt very organic most of the time.

I did have a couple of problems, but most of them were related to the actual mechanics of writing. The narrative felt a bit repetitive at times, and while I enjoyed the third person POV with shifting glimpses into the thoughts of the two lead characters, there were a few points where I felt like I'd read a passage, sentence, description, etc., more than once. I also thought some tighter editing was in order, to avoid some grammatical glitches and one or two descriptions that seemed a bit off. There were a few other technical errors, typos and the like, and the occasional wrong word used. I had a couple of them really jump out at me, interrupting the flow of the story.

The only really significant story/plot issue I had worth mentioning concerns the confrontation at the end. Leading up to it, I was a bit confused, because I couldn't really figure out the motivation to engage in conflict at that particular point and under those circumstances, and a few of the happenings during that confrontation were a bit hard to believe (on thing in particular bordered on ludicrous). Because of that, the end seemed a little contrived and hard to really appreciate. The preceding parts were so satisfying with plot and characterization, though, that I truly enjoyed and very much liked Prophecy: Child of Light (Vampires Realm, #1). I'm anxiously awaiting the start of the next book...which will be in just a few Kindle clicks, actually.

I was not expecting much from Prophecy. Cheesy title. Characters named Valentine and Prophecy (come on, could they be any more cliched?). A plot that waffles on about destiny and forbidden love. A trashy cover.* Plus there's been at least 5734912 crap vampire romances published since Twilight - and a fair few before it besides. Vampires have gotten samey.

So I figured this would probably be a DNF and I could clear the spot in my (virtual) library. But I have to give it to Heaton. She writes well. The plot isn't anything new and the events and characters were definitely rather cliche - but she pulls it off. Somehow she toes the line and keeps Prophecy from being lame or cheesy. By the time I got to the end (and it was a long time - this is pretty long for an ebook), I felt as though I'd connected with the protagonists and was rooting for them.

In fact, I was going to bump Prophecy up to 3.5 stars, until I read the ending. Prophecy discovers that maybe she'd been a bit rash in her warmongering... maybe? I don't blame her for not being clear on who she was supposed to fight because frankly I had no idea either. I mean, she's fighting in a war only it's never clear who the other side is. Or who her side is for that matter. It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy I suppose because as far as I could tell, the only reason there was going to be a war was because the prophecy said so. Sure, people were chasing her and Valentine because they "sinned" and because they were scared of Prophecy... but a few people thinking you've been a bit naughty doesn't really equate to thousands of deaths. Maybe that's just me. Anyway I'm peeved to have slogged through 400 pages to get an ambiguous ending that just serves to throw light on the things that made no sense, hence only 3 stars.

* Speaking of the cover, rarely was the phrase "don't judge a book by it's cover" more accurate. The cover and the 16 people who have labelled this as erotica are sadly deluded, for Prophecy is pretty tame. Sure, some of the feeding scenes were hot-ish, but that's about it. There aren't even euphemisms or "and they disappeared into the bedroom... (chapter ends)". Even someone like Meg Cabot uses the odd euphemism. But, despite the naked people cover, there is nothing in Prophecy that would make me hesitate in giving it to even the youngest of teenagers. There is no sex whatsoever.

Prophecy has lived inside her vampire home her entire life without ever stepping outside the front gate. She has no idea of what life is like outside of her home besides what she has seen on TV. Her vampire family tells her it's because they want to keep her safe. What Prophecy doesn't know is that she is the long awaited Prophecy for the vampires, one that is supposed to destroy her entire race. When Prophecy decides one night to sneak outside the walls of her home to feed on a human, she meets Valentine. Valentine is a vampire from a rival family. When Valentine finds out who Prophecy is by biting her, Valentine has to tell his family what he has found. Valentine didn't count on his vampire leader to have him kill Prophecy. When Valentine decides to kidnap Prophecy and try to help her, it is the beginning of an adventure for her. One that will not only help her find out who she really is but what she has to do. This story is a long one but a good one. You can't help but feel for Prophecy in this story, she is like a child, just getting to see the world for the first time but she is in her 20s. Felicity has created this vampire story with the vampire families living in different "Houses". They are all rival Houses. This story has vampire, witches and werewolves all with different pasts. There is action throughout the story, and the story with Prophecy keeps you reading just so you can find out the mystery about her.

Prophecy of Light by Felicity Heaton had an interesting storyline, action and romance (but not the thrown-in-your-face sappy kind)!

Prophecy and Valentine are the two main characters in this book. Both are from different bloodlines, forbidden from associating with one another. Of course, one night they met and instantly were drawn to each other. This element reminded me a lot of the Romeo and Juliet syndrome, but I liked it! Prophecy was a young vampire who never left her compound. Valentine, on the other hand, was old and has seen his share of life and the world. When Valentine was ordered to kill Prophecy, he threw away his whole life and everything he's worked for to save her. Now, they are both fugitives.

The remainder of the book focuses on their search for her history and powers, avoiding wolves and hunters, and engaging in a large battle. The only drawback is the daunting descriptions... sometimes it was a little too much, slowing the story down, but it wasn't horrible. I prefer more information in a novel! Another little annoyance was the cover. I love the art/look, but I think it's misleading - the romance in the actual story consisted of a kiss, at the end of the book.

Overall, I recommend this book. I stayed up to 3:00am to finish it! It has action and suspense, but be warned... there is a cliffhanger!

What?!?! Started out good, then the narrative became vague and lacked connection to the mythology which itself is severely underdeveloped. I'm curious to see if it improves and if the author can pull this together. In no rush to start book two though. Heaton is turning out to be another K. Ashley for me, out of the park home run or complete strike out.

The real reason I bought this book was because it was less than a pound and incredibly long.
Now, while I did enjoy reading the book, it's just not a series which I would persue or a book that I would re-read. Overall, I'm afraid to say that it was simply 'alright'.

While I did enjoy some of the book, I skipped over a lot of parts. It has taken me 2 weeks to read a 7-hour long book. I usually read that in a day or 2, but I had to take breaks for this one because it was getting boring...

The characters keep repeating or thinking the same things over and over, and going back and forth quite a bit... The writing is dry and jagged with lots of "he did this", "she thought that", "he knew this", "she believed that", "this happened", etc, etc, etc... Too much telling and not enough feeling. Even their inner thoughts were dry and matter-of-fact. It made it hard for me to feel them. They just sat there on the page, never gripping or compelling.

I didn't feel like Prophecy had any character growth at all. Besides having an innate magic that needed awakening, and the reveal of who she was, she didn't have enough substance, to my liking. Valentine had some growth at least, and was more interesting to me, but still... I don't know if I can take more of wishy washy, dependent Prophecy to read book 2... especially if Valentine is out of the picture for a good chunk of it.

But maybe after what happened at the end of this book, she'll finally wake up and grow? I'm just not sure that hope is enough to compel me to find out what happens next, especially if I have to dredge through hours upon hours of long, dry explanations that don't pull me towards the end.

This was an enjoyable read. The story was interesting and quite fast paced. The character development was thorough and the vampires were "real"!!! They killed to feed and to survive. No taking little "sips" and wiping minds of the experience. They fed till their meal died!! This was not described in a gory way but you certainly got the picture and it was refreshing to read old style type vampires. You also have werewolves and witches, so pretty much the makings of a great fantasy series.

The reason for not scoring higher is that I felt the story dragged on. Not really in a bad way, but this is a series and I just felt that I had invested so much time into this book that I wanted an actual end to this first book in the series.

The book was free and I did enjoy it but by the time I finished it I was annoyed that the ending wasn't conclusive. I will more than likely read the next book in the series but not immediately.

First Book in this series

It was a good start but I have hoped for more insight on the characters. As well for the different houses of the coven. There has been no numbers how many people living in this houses, they must all be massive with tons of rooms. I missed more details on the area and I found it not believable that they don't had any contacts to humans. There was only one interaction, the stewardess on the plane. It just gave the impression there are the only person on the planet.
More details on the characters like Iona, Akkarlus
You couldn't get a picture of those. The conversations they had was not enough to get more information on prophecy.

Fantastic story.

Felicity has to me, a unique talent in story writing.
She tells a tale that is believable in your mind, which you will follow with intrigue and watch it unfold in your mind as if you are watching a film.
Now the reason I have 4 stars.
As I said, watching a film? No, it is a saga that goes on and on so you have to buy the next book and the next to get the complete story.
Reading a book needs a start, a middle and an end, a conclusion!
If you hired a film to watch that had more questions than answers when it finished you would annoyed. And that is what I am.
I don't like cliff hangers!!!

Awesome read

Love the lore and the story. A series that will have any vampire lover lose sleep over.

Kinda a slower start for me but the story picks up quickly. I absolutely love the complexity of Valentine and Prophecy's characters and how they grow throughout the story.

Stale

I really looked forward to reading this. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. A prophecy with a woman named Prophecy should have told me not to even try reading it.
Its just not worth explaining how boring and ridiculous it is.

Nice

Very well written. Especially enjoyed the smooth transition from Prophecy’s point of view to Valentine’s point of view and vise versa. The plot was enjoyable and the many friends met along the way were colorful. Enjoyed the read.

The mark of power

Exciting and unpredictable! This story steals the breath from your body and the strength from your limbs as true love is tested and bested by those following a dark prophecy!
