I’m a big fan of Melissa Baldwin and a huge cozy mystery fan, so I was ecstatic when she announced she was writing a cozy. The cover is perfect, they storyline is amazing, and I’ll probably reread it just to enjoy the story again. I loved living in Kendall’s world. Between the murders, crazy run-ins with Kendall’s teenage nemesis, flourishing and floundering friendships, and sparks of romance—I won’t share my #TeamNewBoyfriend, because spoilers—Melissa did a stellar job of keeping the tone light and cozy, and definitely left me with a list of possible suspects until the very end! I’ll definitely be begging Melissa to write another cozy for me soon!
This is a delightful cosy mystery with aspiring actress, Kendall Whitaker, with the starring role! She's working as the personal assistant to the Marketing Director at Blossom Studios, hoping this will give her a way in to a significant role to give her a huge hand toward stardom. However, when her high school nemesis and a handsome leading man come into the Studios, Kendall never dreamt that her new role would involve discovering one of her colleagues murdered and her boss mysteriously disappeared! With a central role in the on-going drama, Kendall just can't decide who to trust, though maybe the detective in charge of the investigation might have his own role in future? As someone is trying to destroy the studio, who will be the next victim - and why? Can Kendall keep herself safe?
This is a fun cosy mystery and easy to escape into with great characters and plenty of laughs as well as dramatic events before the murderer is revealed. It is the first story in a new series and I'll certainly be looking out for future books in this series and by this author. There are laugh out loud escapades, plenty of twists and turns and a suspense-filled conclusion in this great read.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Movie Scrips and Madness by Melissa Baldwin a cosy and snug four-star read. This is my first read by this author and I will be honest I like the Cozy mystery genre but it’s not a favourite genre, but this was a really well written and funny example. Kendall Whitaker was a great character she just wanted to follow her dream and she is going to do anything to get there, including following the bright lights to Hollywood, but we all know the streets of Hollywood aren’t paved with streets of scripts but hard work. I loved how crazy it got when everything fell apart for Kendall, but I also loved how’s he ploughed on and kept going. Throw in a hot cop and you have the deal sealed for me, as well as some very funny stories. Well done on a great story Melissa Baldwin.
Kendall Whitaker has dreams of becoming an actress and having the starring role in a movie full of action and adventure. She thinks that taking a job as an assistant at Blossom Studios will be the stepping stone to her dreams. Little does she know, she will find action, adventure, and even murder on the job. Now Kendall must unravel the mystery and prove her innocence before being locked up or even worse lose her life.
This is a perfect cozy mystery filled with quirky characters, madcap adventure, mystery, and lots of twists and turns. It is the perfect read for a cool winter’s day while wrapped in a blanket and sipping a hot drink.
Thanks to #Movie scripts and madness, Melissa Brown and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book in return for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this. It’s a fluffy, easy read. I’d compare it to watching an episode of Columbo.
No thrills, but, some murders to solve and the lead character is just the person to do just that. Despite guessing the murderer partway through, I continued to be entertained.
So, in summary, grab your popcorn and enjoy the nonsense. Oh! And I liked the movie graphics at the start of each chapter.
As an avid reader of the ChickLit books by Melissa Baldwin, I was thrilled to see that she wrote a cozy mystery. This book was a great cozy that had a bit of mystery and a hunk of romance. I found myself not wanting to stop reading because I needed to know who did it. A grab-your-attention read that you won't want to put down!
This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
4.5- I absolutely love cozy mysteries and finding another fantastic author in this genre made my day. I enjoyed this book tremendously, from the comedy to the mystery. This book was fun from the first pages and the author did an amazing job describing the scenes in Kendall's life. Every page was full of so many unexpected plot twists that it made it easy to read in a few hours. Thank you for allowing me to read this and write a honest response.
This is the first I have read of this author; however, it will not be the last. Kendall is an aspiring actor and she gets a job as an assistant to a marketing director at the studio as a potential stepping-stone into the movies. Unfortunately, what she is starring in is a double murder and there are definitely some love interests, high school nemesis and lots of actions. Clever story line and engaging plot. Enjoyed this story. Want to read more.
I had forgotten how much fun cozy mysteries are. The protagonist, Kendall Whitaker, is working as the assistant to the marketing manager at Blossom Studios while she awaits an opportunity to try for a part in an upcoming film. A murder occurs and the threat of the destruction of studio causes a panic. The ending is a surprise and, of course, there is an interesting love story. I am gifting this to a friend with my recommendation
Kendall works as a marketing assistant at Blossom studios whilst waiting on her chance to become an actress. Her boss Mr Poole is a nasty dour man but she puts up with him until someone finds him dead and someone is trying to sabotage the studio hence police involvement, people in hospital. Kendall doesn't know who to trust so puts her sleuthing skills to work and enlists the help of one cute detective. . .
I love film. I love mysteries. But sometimes it's hard to do mysteries about film. This handles it well, hitting all of the notes and story beats I'd want. The characters are interesting and largely likable. The office politics adds an interesting layer and texture to the story. And the humor is well placed build the right tension/release cycle for the story.
A book set in the small Blossom Studios, in Hollywood. The main character is Kendall, an aspiring actress, from Phoenix, who has come to work in their marketing department as an assistant, hoping to audition for parts found through work. She shares a house with two other young women, both working in other industries and hardly ever at home. They don’t share her hopes for becoming an aspiring actress.
Kendall picks up a script and stays late to practice her lines at work, awaiting a date for open auditions. Events at the studio start to go awry and a dead body is found and props destroyed. She also has an arch enemy from her high school past to overcome. She vied for a part and this other girl smashed her ego to pulp as a child, she certainly doesn’t want a repeat. Add in the Hollywood hunk who has an eye for Kendall, but also a complicated relationship with another, and it ramps up the confusion.
Who is trying to destroy the studio and why are they doing it? After finding herself as one of the suspects, she feels she has to try and solve the murder herself, as most of this type of book do, and meets an attractive detective in the course of this. She has to prove her innocence, find the true criminal and safe herself from danger. A pretty normal cozy mystery, with some good twists and an interesting main character. Somewhat typecast, but basing it in Hollywood, this is the main plot or dream of many travelling there.
An easy read, just short of three hundred pages, which gives you enough to puzzle over, as each possible suspect is examined by Kendall in the hope of solving the case – so she can get to an audition for the movie script she has been studying. It’s an enjoyable read, which can take your mind away from its usual turmoil and relax you.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

In Melissa Baldwin's Movie Scripts and Madness, her protagonist, Kendall Whitaker, takes a position as the Marketing Director's assistant at Blossom Studios to get her foot in the door. An aspiring actress, she believes she will get an opportunity to audition for a part in a film by being so close. However, before she gets the chance, there is a murder at the studio and she discovers the body. Then the studio is beset with problems, all film production is halted, her boss is murdered, and a friend who is also a studio employee is attacked and hospitalized. In the middle of all this, she meets a young, well-known film actor who offers to help her prepare for an audition, and the investigating detective who wants to protect her from the threats she's getting because she is asking so many questions around the studio.
Overall, Movie Scripts and Madness is an interesting mystery with a few twists and appropriate misdirection. Ms. Baldwin's skill with dialogue is exceptional and this is where her characters come to life and seem real. The interaction between the characters is lively, but Ms. Baldwin's narrative, from Kendall's perspective, often slows the story down. I enjoyed Movie Scripts and Madness. Ms. Baldwin has created a good foundation for a cozy series and I am looking forward to the sequel because I am curious to see how Kendall's dream of becoming a film actress progresses.
This was an incredibly fun read. I was sick when I read it, even my eyeballs hurt, but this book kept me smiling. This is a new author to me,but I'm hoping there will be more cozies in her ( and my) future. I'm not sure if this is going to be a series, but I'm definitely in if there is a book two. The author packed a lot of information into every page so that you could easily picture the studio, Kendall's apartment, or Sam's office in your mind. There were a lot of characters introduced at the beginning, but unlike a lot of books I never felt the need for a cast of characters. Every character is well rounded & fleshed out. Kendall has moved from Phoenix to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. Even though she's made new friends at Blossom Studios where she works ( hopefully temporarily) in Marketing, she still keeps in touch with her best friend back in Phoenix which I thought was nice. Kendall is a very reluctant sleuth, but a lot of fun to spend time with. The only cons I have are minor. If Kendall & Claire are such good friends, why did Claire never mention knowing Emma, Kendall's HS nemesis? And why did Claire, Emma & Kenny want to do what they wanted to do? No reasoning was ever given. Yes, that has bothered me, but, not enough to take away from what a fun read this was. Thank you to Hidden Gems for supplying me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is Melissa Baldwin's first attempt at a cozy mystery. While not my favorite book of hers, it does show some potential, and I think the series will improve as she keeps going.
Kendall works for a movie studio as a stepping stone to an acting career. When she accidentally stumbles upon a dead body at the studio, she finds herself thrust into being an amateur sleuth. It's totally self-serving, but I could see myself wanting to do the same.
She is also dealing with an arch-nemesis from high school, Emma, who has her hook set in Grayson, the hot, popular actor who has his sights set on Kendall.
Kendall seems a bit naive. Emma is nasty. There's something a little shady about Grayson that I can't put my finger on. But Kendall is so hoping for love that you want it to work. And then you add in the weird disappearance of Mr. Poole, her boss and threats against her.
There are some good twists and turns and you honestly cannot really be sure whom to trust. The ending may surprise you, as well as some of the developing relationships.
I do plan on reading the next in the series, because I feel like it can only get better. And I am totally a sucker for both cozy mysteries and Melissa Baldwin's books.
Another tale of a bright young thing in Hollywood hoping to use her job as the assistant to a studio Marketing exec as a stepping stone to her big break in the movies.
When a catalyzing chain of events featuring the attention of a dashing lothario as well as an equally charming cop and the return of her arch adversary from her days in her Phoenix hometown present themselves, aspiring actress Kendall Whitaker finds herself starring in a role she never anticipated…the suspect in a double homicide.
Is there a plot afoot to destroy Blossom Studios and crush Kendall’s chances for stardom? Who is the culprit behind the deadly happenings? Looks like it’s up to Kendall to solve the mystery and save her career as well as her life, which are both in jeopardy.
This is a clever cozy that will appeal to readers of this genre.
Movie Scripts and Madness by Melissa Baldwin is a fun cozy mystery. Twenty-eight year old Kendall Whitaker left Phoenix and moved to Los Angeles because she wants to be an actress. She got a job as the assistant to Mr. Victor Poole in marketing at Blossom Studios to get her foot in the door so she could go on auditions. Unfortunately things start happening at the film studio to try to cause its downfall. First the wardrobe room is torn up and then Jessie, the main receptionist is found dead. When Mr. Poole goes missing, Detective Ryan Adams gets more involved in the case. Kendall is a likable character/sleuth who tries to figure out what is going while Ryan becomes her love interest. Her nemesis from high school, Emma King, adds to her stress. There are just enough possible suspects to make things interesting. I really enjoyed this book!
Melissa Baldwin has given a great view of what can happen in movie industry. A women struggles to keep things going while waiting for that big break, then every part of her life seems to be falling apart one peace at a time. Friends seem to be turning her, away murder on the lot ,vandalism, threatening phone calls, and she's sure some one is waching her. The only thing that seems to be going her way is a movie star she's attracted to seems interested in her as well and so is an attractive detective .There are so many amazing caracters good and not so friendly, some down right mean and crazy. You'll never guess who 's the worst of the group, so you'll love to to the very end. 🤔🙄😮😏 Kat
This is the first book I've read by Melissa Baldwin and I loved it! It was fun and interesting from page 1 through to the end and hard to put down! Kendall is a Marketing Assistant at a small movie studio. She doesn't like her job but needs it until she gets an opportunity to become an actress. A receptionist is killed and Kendall is the one to find her. The movie studio is being sabotaged. Then Kendall ' s high school nemesis gets a job at the studio along with a handsome charming actor. It is an intriguing cozy mystery. I guessed the culprit but not until near the end. This was an enjoyable book!
Step right up, folks: feckless heroine here! Endearing, likable, but feckless. Kendall Whittaker moved from Phoenix to LA because she wants to be A Star. Because discovery in a drugstore isn't feasible for everyone, she found a menial job in the marketing department of a low-budget Hollywood studio. Her superior is unbearable. So is Kendall's life when, working alone one night at the studio, she stumbles upon a corpse, and a trashed wardrobe room. And Kendall was the only person in the studio and that evening...
Movie Scrips and Madness is my 1st book by Melissa Baldwin. I do believe she has gtreat potential. If you like a b that you have to try and guess who the bad guy is and who gets the girl this one is for you. I did kind of figure out who gets the girl bur the antagonist was a bit of a shock tho' after reading and thinking about it it does make sense. I like the fact that it leaves it open for a second book. Keep up the good work Melissa and Loking forward to the next one. There is going to be a next one right? Cheers Lynn.
Wow! Murders, sabatage, lies, threats, and one crazy person makes a pretty intense script! I never knew wanting to be an actress can be so dangerous. It was a well written story and a quick read. Everyone's a suspect but can YOU guess who is the killer? On a side note, I liked where they mentioned Chandler from "Freinds." It made me smile.
This was a nice and easy read. I liked Kendall. She was living in Hollywood and had been trying to become an actress. Of course like most people she has a hard time. However, she does work at the studio. A murder takes place and of course she is involved in all the drama. I enjoyed the mystery and thankfully I wasn't able to figure it out before the end.
Good read. Great characters and story flow. Interesting and entertaining look into the Hollywood scene. The mystery was done well and it was hard in the cast of characters to pick the "who done it". Liked the book! Hard to put this one down. Keeps you guessing until the end. Would recommend.
