From the popular internet sensation "They Can Talk" comes a hilarious comic collection of what it would be like if we had VIP access to the lives of our animal friends and foes. Humor writer and artist Jimmy Craig offers 100 colorful comics, including the inner thoughts of creatures from across the animal kingdom--from misunderstood sharks and trouble making bears to the often complicated relationship between you and your pet cat. Get dating advice from raccoons, and learn what roosters think when the sun rises and why cats are always knocking things off of shelves. They Can Talk is the perfect quirky gift for any lover of animals, or for anyone who just loves to laugh.
this is another one of those alchemical transformations in which a wizard took an online thingie and turned it into a real book - poof!
it’s not a transmutation in which all 100 pages are the funniest thing ever, but there are plenty that made me laugh.
and while i do not personally know the author/illustrator, we share an opinion about a particular beloved beastie, which i discovered on his “about the author” page, because why yes, i DO read those:
His favorite animal is the red panda and he’s convinced that if you don’t know what a red panda is and take a second to look it up, it’ll be your favorite animal soon too.
truth.
my favorites are among the (many) cat-based pictures, which should come as no surprise:
also no surprise that i applaud the heroism of sharks:
and animals being jerks to other animals:
especially the jerkiest creatures of all - birrrrrrds:
it’s cute; i especially like the way he draws raccoons and the way the situations are sometimes specific to the animal kingdom:
and sometimes have behavioral crossover into our own:
it’s good for some ha-has; if you’re on the fence, check out the online comics, including this one that somehow didn’t make the cut because wizards make mistakes, too:
They Can Talk: A Collection of Comics about Animals by Jimmy Craig I saw this at the library and was curious. Boy am I glad I picked it up! This is hilarious! I think most are true! Lol! It's comics of what animals would be saying in situations if we could only hear them. I laughed and giggled all the way through! There was not one dud comic. Every single comic was a winner! Go find this short book for a pick-me-up!
Not super funny. There were a couple of them that kind of made me chuckle but most of them were just not funny. They tried to be but it was more like, "Oh yeah, a dog would say that." but said with no facial expression at all. Good concept but could have been funnier.
I didn't know of Jimmy Craig before walking into the calendar store today and saw a page-a-day calendar of his work and wondered if he also had a book. He does! It's great and funny.
What would animals be saying if we could understand them, now we can find out in this adorable, funny and very sharply observed comic collection from Jimmy Craig.
I haven't heard of Jimmy Craig but he did definitely get my approval with his introduction in which he put forth his credits (none) and was upfront that this is only what he believes that animals are saying. As such it is a comic book of literary liberty just as any such book would be.
Anyway the comics are brief with a page dedicated to each one and most of the lines are pop cultural related or just something a bit cliché in the telling. As such there isn't a lot of creativity when it comes to the writing of the pages nor does it make for a lengthy read. Nor did I really find much humor in the comics at all either....
At the same time the comic characters are colored brightly but not presented too realistically as they are more cartoonish-like. And for someone who likes red pandas why are there no red panda comics in any of the strips?
For a brief animal-centered read this will make for a nice quick break but it isn't something that I would recommend to other readers as a priority read.
3 stars for the charge of $10.00 for this short collection. Therefore I wish I could somehow adjust for these few minutes of pleasure. Debating a return… 5 stars for the sheer delight in this. The humor is so relatable, I wish I had thought of this. Correction, I DO think, feel, and behave this way. The artist’s conceptualisation is perfect. I mean look at the expressions on these animals. Anthropomorphism at its most comical. Finally 5 stars and worth following for more. I will not return it, this artist deserves respect and encouragement and likely has no control and a small percentage of the publisher’s monetary demands. Besides, I read and comprehend faster than the average bear. Deserves a reread later! Hope the artist doesn’t spend the 25% (after the publisher gets theirs) all willy-nilly. And kudos to the publisher for appreciating the art. I would rate him (the artist) in the top 10. He is in good company.
This is a chuckle-inducing collection of comics that imagine what a variety of animals, from cats to whales, would have to say about the world around them. Pet lovers will see the behavior of their own dogs and cats in the pages of Craig's book.
Most of it is pretty clever, although the comics do occasionally fall back on the old trope of mean-spirited jokes about animals wanting to be killed for food and so forth--something that speaks more of defensiveness than humor in my view.
What a cute book! A few of the comics had me laughing hysterically - it's my kind of humor. I wish it were a bit longer but it's the perfect book for my end table or bathroom reading. :)
I won this book in goodreads giveaway but these thoughts are all my own!
Just brilliant and so so so funny , anyone who loves animal / loves little funny comic , this is a must read . I love it so much , so looked for it & found the fb page ' They can talk' and now happily reading the new comics as well
Overall very cute and funny depiction of animals big and small. A few typos found but not terrible. There were a couple of comics that I didn’t understand but maybe if I researched the animals I would get it.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a human, a bug, or some type of animal, all living things communicate differently. This was a fun little read and it made me laugh a few times!
A funny collection of comics about animals including dogs, cats, snakes, cows and skunks to name a few. Each comic is condensed to one page and is guaranteed to make you chuckle at least once.
