Excellent mystery, lots of twists with a surprising ending! A great second story in the Lee Callaway series. He is hired by a woman to find her sister, but at every link in the search people say the never knew her, even though Elle, the searching sister, has knowledge of little facts about all places and people at the sight! There has also been a murder of a young basketball star, whose uncle is a member of the police force. The author twists and turns you about, not revealing the big surprise until the amazing ending!!
I received an ARC from the author, which I thoroughly enjoyed and am able to provide this review.

2.5 stars. Nothing memorable here and I think I've had quite enough of the Lee Callaway stories. He seems awfully childish even if he has a good heart. I'm done. I tried. I failed.

By the way dear friends we've still got a long, long way to go with my catch up - well they're not really review are they - snippets? vignettes? i'm just trying to give a feel for my thoughts as I can't remember much of the storylines unless the book was way memorable and that is a tiny minority really.

This book is appropriately titled. Callaway strikes again and this time I did not see it coming. Thought I had it figured out, but again I was out in the left field cheap seats with Bob Uecker.

The PI didn't realize his client wasn't blind? After spending days with her? NO!

The police detective's nephew is murdered and he is allowed to work the case? NO!

A clever plot where the PI case and the totally unrelated police case end up being related. I guess?

I actually lost interest, but had to see how Fincham wrapped it up. NO!

Dana Fisher & her partner, Greg Holt, I called in on a homicide. Not surprising since they are detectives however the body belongs to Holts nephew, a rising basketball star at the local college. Meanwhile Lee Callaway has a new client, a blind woman looking for her sister. The two cases should have nothing in common but where they collide is surprising and devastating.

The book jumps back and forth between the two cases and at the onset seems confusing but as it plays out it makes more and more sense and the ending is exceptionally well done.

The Gone Sister by Thomas Fincham
I’m usually in love with Thomas Fincham's books but not so this one. And the worst thing is I can’t even figure out why. The characters are well drawn and interacted sensibly and intelligently with each other. I found I was intrigued with the plot, more about that later, but there was no hook. And I kinda found myself reluctantly reaching out to pick it up again after an interruption but then not knowing why.
Perhaps I was reading too much expositional information, that I was not gleaning from conversations and the general storytelling? I’m not sure about this, and this would surprise me with Thomas, but I can’t think of any other reason for my disquietude with this particular novel.
I did not find the denouement satisfying, and the ending was a little too complicated for my way of thinking. I got lost during at least three of the convolutions and pretty much gave up trying to figure out what was happening anyway. Maybe that was it.

Story Line is excellent; author seems to have a fixation on illicit sex and irresponsibility and scamming the public in his main character Callaway PI

Story line is excellent and would have received a five star rating but the main character has the morals of a gutter rat which takes away from the story. Not sure why an author would have the main character being a free loader, womanizer and overall scumbag morally. Not sure if the character is based on someone in reality or if it is an inner dream to be a womanizer who sleeps with clients. The character has no morals or integrity which takes away from a 5-star book. Read book one, started book two and Callaway hasn't learned any lessons in life from his mistakes so looking for an author whose characters you want want your children to follow.

Nope. Wouldn't happen.

When detective Holt's nephew Isaiah, a promising basketball player, is killed, detective Holt would not be allowed anywhere near the investigation. But he's all over it. I have to call no way. Even though he's not the lead investigator, he shouldn't have been allowed to work the case. So I count that as a major strike against this book.
And Calladine is hired to find a blind woman's missing sister, but everything about the case screams fake, fake, fake, fake. The whole concept of this book was just too contrived. Like the author wanted to write a story to suit the title, rather than coming up with a title to suit the book.
Results: if you read this, then suspend all belief, because it just wouldn't happen.

Complicated twists

I read the first Lee Callaway book and was looking forward to this one. The two books seem to be written by two different authors. This book is repetitive and seems written by a immature writer. Did an editor ever read this? I edited 3 books for an immature ineffective writer. This reminds me of his level. Surely there's an explanation for this childish display. I won't be reading this author again.

I rushed to this book immediately after finishing book 1. So very entertaining, with twists that lead to an interesting ending even though I found the start kinda flat.

When a promising basketball star who is also a detective's nephew is found dead in a parked car, it becomes personal for the detective who vows to find the killer. At the same time, PI Lee Callaway gets a job to help Elle Pearson find her lost sister. Who would have thought that there would be a connection between these two cases? Elle manages to create a very good cover story that is very convincing to Lee and she's able to carry through with this cover until she's able to achieve her objective.

Am giving the book a 3 star because I was kinda disappointed after reading book 1. The start is flat and the book drags on for so long before any meaningful steps are made in the investigation. Another reason for the 3 star rating is because detective Holt is allowed into the case even though he has direct interest in the case.

I'm kind of disappointed--I finished the first one, which I remember being good, and had hopes that the second one would improve, since we could learn more about Lee's character. But this story just fell kind of flat for me; it reminded me of the CSI or Criminal Minds episodes where one of the team's family members gets murdered, and then the rest of the episode is focused on that team member crying and vowing revenge... Lee was still a big part of the story, but his character didn't develop or change at all. I guess he's now more honest with himself about his inability to hold onto money/his propensity for blowing through money on temporary things? I don't like his character much at all. He seems to have the ability to care about people and to want justice, but he doesn't have any friends and he's constantly coming into (and then running out of) money. I know that's part of the PI trope, but...come on. You're how old? Get your shit together, man.

Twists and turns throughout!

Tragedy strikes the family of Dect. Gary Holt. His nephew, Isaiah is found shot three times in the car belonging to one of his coaches. There were traces of heroin in the glovebox. There were also texts from a woman friend who happened to be a call girl. How was this possible? Lee Callaway,a local PI was running low on cash. Fortunately a woman was climbing up the stairs to his office looking to hire him. When she came inside he noticed that she was blind, wearing sunglasses and using a white cane. One strange thing was she also wore gloves. She wanted him to find her sister who has been missing for three months. She handed him an envelope with $5000 in it. Strangely enough, both cases overlapped. With people disguised and using aliases, both the police and Lee had a lot of investigating to do. Ultimately each case came to a head with many crazy solutions!

This book was a good read and definitely a fine addition to the Fincham library. With all its twists and turns it really kept me hooked, and there's definitely plenty to keep you guessing 'whodunnit' until the very end. The only negative for me was that it felt that sometimes background things dragged a bit and the more action/story-relevant things were rushed. This, combined with the very abrupt (to the point it almost felt like there were pages missing!) was what lost the book a * for me. However, it's still a good read and one I'd recommend for Fincham fans and those who love a good mystery.
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST revie'w based wholly on my own opinions

Gone But Not Forgotten

A promising college basketball star is gunned down. The detectives contend with personal relationships and little evidence. In the meantime P.I. Lee Calloway, a talented detective but irresponsible person, agrees to help a blind woman locate her sister. His investigation takes him into a seedy world of strippers, the mob, hitmen and corrupt cops.

This is a pretty good novel. All the story lines converge and are resolved. It is a bit convoluted. It was unbelievable that the detective who was the basketball player's uncle would be allowed to work on the case. Still interesting and engaging.

This book was decent but I felt a good bit of the details were a little hard to believe even though the author tries to explain them away at the end of the story. I'm glad that Detective Holt's character improves in this book. At the beginning he was the same as in the previous book where he would just make a decision and no one could convince him he was wrong. I'm glad to see that he did finally start doubting himself in this book just because it makes him a much more realistic character and a better detective. Overall this was a good story even if all the details don't quite match up the way they should.

excellent storyline! surprise ending

I read the book prior to this one by this author. Although each book is a stand-alone, it was kind of fun to realize that certain things referred back to that prior book. Although not reading it would still have not hurt the enjoyment of reading this one. You don’t know when you are reading it that there was a previous book in the series. All in all I’m happy that I read BOTH books & plan on reading the very next book in the series. Something that came up at the end of this book was a huge shock. But it was believable & enjoyable once you go over the surprise. I highly recommend!

These books in this series are so easy to read. You just sail right along. I read the second book in one evening! Ready to start the third... Or go to bed...., Ok maybe just one chapter. Thing is I love the chapters. They are short which makes the book a faster read! The story line is good and keeps me moving along with it. So glad I found this series of books already out so I dont have to wait for the next book, then the next book...
Well, good night,
Or Happy Reading...

Pi asked to find a blind womans sister.
Alongside is the murder of Holts nephew.
Both stories are engaging and, surprisingly, separate. No PI doing the police job.
I enjoyed this one and am onto the next.
Both storyline are pretty complex but the writer manages to keep you engaged and separate.
I do find I can guess where the story is going, but I was kept in to see if I was right. The police story had a twist.
I don't like spoilers so won't give any further. Nice flow to the writing.

Wonderful Read

The Gone Sister is the second book in Author, Thomas Fincham's Lee Callaway series. Fincham's story grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go until the last. There were multiple mysteries intertwined within this story and the author presented an even more in-depth look at the three main characters (Calloway, Fisher and Holt), from the first book. This story was fast paced and interesting the entire read. I am looking forward to the third book in this series.

Excellent mystery

I really liked this new author. I was confused by the first chapter introducing characters that did not appear again until almost the end. It seems like there were new characters every few chapters. They all came together very well. Lee Calloway is a PI who has been hired to find Ellie’s sister. There are two detectives working on the murder of one of the detectives nephew. It all comes together nicely.

This book is like two separate stories running simultaneously till they are linked up by the common denominator that is Bruno Rocco. Callaway is a bit of a rogue character but is determined to see the job through and help Elle find out what happened to her "sister" although the reveal at the end shows what her goal really was. All the collateral damage along the way and Cosimo's involvement via Beniti adds more twists and makes for a murder mystery worth reading.

I liked this. I like Callaway and Detective Hunt and Fischer. There were alot of people to keep track of though. And for quite some time it really was 2 different stories. Hunt's nephew is killed. He and Fischer are working to solve the case. Callaway is working on a case for a blind woman, Elle, searching for her missing sister. I suspected something with the Elle but not all that was revealed. This was a fast read, told from Callaway's perspective and the detectives.

Well, this was better than book #1 but I keep wishing Lee was not such a loser....
even if he is good hearted. The first half felt like I was reading two totally
different books at once. Then I got totally lost when all those mob characters
were brought in. I was glad the author explained all the connections at the
end, but overall, not a very interesting or satisfying story.

Good book

I can usually guess the ending in a book and the pleasure lies in how we are going to get there. Not this one! It has some interesting twists and turns and other things, are going on that are not apparent. Good book, interesting characters. I keep waiting for the main character to grow up before his daughter does!

Unreadable

It is very rare for me to just put a book down in the middle of it. I can enjoy like reading at times, but this book was just silly. The characters were not believable, the plot was not believable, I just found myself not giving a damn. I have very much enjoyed other books by this author however this one didn't do it for me.

Excellent!

At first I was frustrated by the switch between the characters with each chapter. It was almost like reading two different books. But, because I have read a previous book featuring Lee, I knew they would eventually tie together. They did in ways I never saw coming. Excellent ending!

Woah!!

Book two was excellent! It was very well written, I'm glad I bought book two. I can't believe one book can be so good. I love Callaway he put his heart into his cases, I know this is a fiction novel but if I ever needed help I would want him to help. Buy book two you won't regret it, it's a great read you won't be able to put it down, you will finish it in one day.

Very intricate

Although I really like Fincham's writing, I found this story with its intertwining plots just a little too convoluted. I'm not a fan of the narrative at the end of the book filling in the gaps. So for this story I am only giving two stars, though it must have been a real headache to keep track of while it was being written!

Very Good Murder Mystery

This is the third book that I've read by Thomas Fincham and I enjoyed it very much. It had numerous plot twists that kept you analyzing characters and motives as I'm always trying to solve the riddles before the author reveals them. It was a very satisfying read and can't wait to read another book by the author.
