The Best American Erotica series is so excellent! I really appreciate what Susie Bright has done with it.

In every edition, there are stories about men having sex with men, men having sex with women, women having sex with women, people having sex with themselves. Sometimes there are stories about humans having sex with space being. The stories include people of all genders and all sexual orientations, and the writing is GOOD! I never like every story in every edition, but I always like at least one story a whole lot.

I've had this book of erotic shorts since it was published in 2001, and although I've read it several times, I've never before read it with an eye toward criticism. Turns out, it stands up (ha!) to scrutiny outside the sheets as well as between 'em.

There are several stand-outs here, including stories from authors well-known to me (Piercy) and new (Blank, Taulapapa, Grace). Not all were to my taste, but that's to be expected. All in all, a well-rounded smorgasbord of sexual storytelling, edited by the as-always reliable Ms. Bright.

Awful is the word that springs to mind. I didn’t find one decent story in this bunch. Only the very first story had any form of creative nature, freakish, but creative. I wasn’t quite sure what I was expecting when I got this from the library. I imagined love and erotic situations = good writing style. But it is just a jumble of homosexual and ‘forbidden’ acts that left me feeling anger and empty.
