Cracks in the Façade
Nineteenth century England, the green and pleasant land at the height of its glory. One of the most powerful and advanced nations of the world, the British Lion dictates law, defends peace, and makes war when necessary. "The sun never sets on the British Empire," or so the slogan goes.

But there are cracks in the façade, events which undermine Victorian society and stability. The social protests of Dicken's novels. The ecclisiastical firestorm over Darwin's Origin of Species. The Sepoy Mutiny of India. The massacre of General "Chinese" Gordon and his forces at Khartoum. The budding decadent movement in the arts, as exemplified by the drawings of Aubrey Beardsley and the prose of Oscar Wilde. The bloody, brutal work of Jack the Ripper.

These are but hints of the forces stirring; dark forces which now crawl forth from those cracks; hungry forces which threaten sanity, humanity, and Empire.

GASLIT TERRORS
SACRAMENTS OF EVIL is a supplement for the CALL OF CTHULHU roleplaying game, containing six adventures set in 1890's England. Some of these are suitable for beginning players and investigators, while others assume some experience with the Cthulhu Mythos. SACRAMENTS OF EVIL integrates background information from Chaosium's CTHULHU BY GASLIGHT supplement, but that book is not needed for play.

At once both overwritten and underdeveloped, there are some good ideas in here, but they will take some work to get to a playable state. "The Eyes of a Stranger" is bad and probably racist, so best avoided. "The Scuttling" is weird and unfocused and I can't see how it would work in play. "Sacraments of Evil" is fine, but isn't as compelling or interesting as the similar "Signs Writ in Scarlet"; and who decided to put two serial killer investigations in the same book? "The Masterwork of Nicholas Forby" is quite unlike the usual Call of Cthulhu adventure, but is all the better for it, and "Plant Y Daear" sets up some genuinely interesting challenges for players.
