Raymond T McNally was an American author and professor of Russian and East European History at Boston College. He specialized in the history of horror and wrote many books around the subject.
Before Buffy, before Twilight there was the Vampire. And this little tome details the history of such as mentioned in ancient Roman texts as well as the Romanian and Hungarian mythologies. What is a lovely bonus is that you also get Le Fanu's Carmilla which is a spine-tingling novella, as well as the unpublished opening chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula. If you are interested in these monsters of myth and legend and want to see how the idea has developed over time, this is your book. It's a good source book for budding writers on which cliches to avoid: Robert Bloch's Living Dead (on an actor whose portrayal of a vampire to ensure a German listening post remains undisturbed has unexpected and ....er... pointed consequences) and Stephen Grendon's The Drifting Snow (on the snow vampires of North West America who leave their victims marked with delicate hand prints) are good examples of new takes on what can be a drained genre.
Very mixed ratings within these short stories, some I liked, and some I wasn’t a big fan of. Glad to have read it! Haven’t read about vampires in a few years 🦇
This was an exceedingly well done and well researched book on vampires. Inside, you'll find great illustrations (e.g. Edvard Munch's Hary and Vampire; Edward Gory), historic references and good exemplary stories on vampires (e.g. Carmilla). Besides there are many fine black and white photos here (e.g. the original Count Dracula's capital city). If you want to find out more about vampires in literature and movies you'll definitely have to turn to this book. Well written, captivating, inspiring and to the point. Highly recommended!
A decent collection of vampire lore from all the way back in antiquity up through to the 1900s. You can definitely see the evolution of these popular creatures of the night, especially the superstitions for dealing with them. My favorite was The Living Dead by Robert Bloch.
