My name's Cèsar Hawke, and the people in my life are filled with good intentions.
We all know where that ends up.
A fissure to Hell has ripped from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and now half the City of Dis is in my hometown. Helltown's hotter than ever. Demon dynasties are on the rise. Nightmares are out to get me.
Staying alive means forgiving people I've kicked out of my life, it means getting vicious with magic, and yeah, it means I'm dealing with dead bodies. Lots of them.
I'm Cèsar Hawke. I used to be an agent with the Office of Preternatural Affairs. And this is how the world ends.
Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy and paranormal novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.
If you would like to know the instant my next book is available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a wicked cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out -- http://smarturl.it/armyofevil
I did receive this book from the publisher and author in exchange for a review. Something had been bothering me about Cesar Hawke since I finished reading the Dana McIntyre series and this book revealed the answers, thank goodness. I would have been left hanging and wondering otherwise!
This book swaps between the here and now and the not so distant past and builds up the events leading closer to Dana's series and Genesis. Cesar is no longer a member of the OPA and in the current time is working as a PI helping people get out of Las Vegas and away from the demons that keep invading the city. Fritz, Suzy and Isobel make an appearance, but Cesar doesn't seem to recognise them at all. This was the first confusing part for me, but hold on, just read on and all is revealed sooner or later.
Back in the past and Cesar and Fritz's relationship is somewhat strained. They don't spend as much time together as they should and both are suffering with separation sickness. They are certainly not as close as they once were and secrets on both sides are preventing them from moving forward together. However, they do need to work together to resolve the big bad that is coming!
Although I haven't read any other book in this series except for Bitter Thirst, I found this book fairly easy to follow and get into. I know Cesar appears in the Dana McIntyre series, but I do feel you need to read the end of this series before reading that one, now this series is complete as it reveals a lot more of the background that Dana's story needed. I will go back one day and start this series from the beginning and will explore the world of Cesar and Fritz again.
Thank you to Sara and Angie for inviting me to read this book. I really enjoyed it and it finally answered some of my questions left over from Dana's story.
I was not a happy camper going into The Road to Helltown. Why you may ask? The answer is kinda petty, but simple. Out of all the male characters in this crazy world created by SM Reine, Cèsar Hawke is my absolute favorite. (Rylie's my favorite female character, in case you're curious.) I may be in the minority and that's okay, but I suffered a little bit of heart break when I found out that this would be the last of Cèsar's books. *sigh*
Regardless of my trepidation, I grudgingly put on my big girl pants and dove into the last Preternatural Affairs book knowing that SM Reine would give my beloved Cèsar the send off he deserved. Let's just say that it's a good thing I trust this author because Cèsar went through a lot in this book. The Road to Helltown was not a fun trip for anyone involved - least of all Cèsar.
The Road to Helltown was told by several different POVs, which included Fritz, Suzume (never call her that), Isobel and of course, Cèsar. Readers learned a lot about each of them in this book. Some good and some not so good. The thing I love about Cèsar is that he doesn't take himself too seriously. He knows his faults and admits them freely and he's blatantly honest - mostly about himself. Being in his head is so entertaining. Readers got that in The Road to Helltown, but they also got things that they didn't expect - like real glimpses of Fritz, Suzy and Isobel.
I gotta admit, as much as I've loved Cèsar, I have not been a real fan of Fritz. He's always seemed so stuffy and prickly and grumpy... you get the picture. That's not just from this series either, because he's made appearances in more than one series in this world. In true SM Reine fashion, my opinions about him changed in The Road to Helltown. I'm still not in love with him, but I can honestly say that I like him now. That's major progress. ;)
Being in Suzy's head was fun too. It was great to find out how much she cared about (and lusted over) Cèsar. It shouldn't have surprised me too much because she was always passionate about her magic. It was just good to know that Cèsar's love and respect wasn't one-sided.
I'm not sure why, but I always found the relationship between Fritz and Isobel a little... strange? By the end of The Road to Helltown, I was more comfortable with it. Isobel's POV helped with that I think. Truth is, I really think that this foursome is much better together than apart - their quirkiness just works better together.
SM Reine took these characters on a unique journey and I liked the twist. It was scary, gruesome, and at times even fun. The Preternatural Affairs series was most definitely brought to a satisfying end, but that doesn't mean I'm still not going to miss them... especially Cèsar. There are still a few things I'd like to know, so hopefully we haven't seen the last of Cèsar and company. Maybe not all together anymore, but a glimpse or cameo here and there would be nice. <3
I received The Road to Helltown in exchange for a fair and honest review.
OK, I’m not sure what I expected out of the last Cesar book, but it totally wasn’t this! This author knows how to make me feel so safe in the knowledge of oodles of previous books and then just pulls the rug out from under me! I expected a bloody, gory, fight to the end and instead I got the most satisfying book of the series!
Cesar is still... Cesar. If you were annoyed with him before, his participation in the events leading up to the apocalypse will not make you love him more. His actions afterwards are just… the best. I’m getting ahead of myself, but in a world where I know what happens years after, years before, and to other people at the same time, where to draw the spoiler line gets confusing. We are still rapidly approaching what people know will be a drastic change for the world as everyone knows it. Cesar is the saddest, reluctant participant in the apple, but he’s still going along with their plans. Can you feel me shaking my head at him? That’s what I’ve done through most of the series.
As things start looking worse and worse, he is actually forced to make some tough decisions. He can no longer stay on the sidelines or be pulled along by either his girlfriend or his boss’s wife. As far as his storyline goes, he certainly gets the best of all endings available. We know where he has to end up (or at least anyone who has read the surrounding books knows) but the path is totally uncertain. There will be a re-making of sorts, so all bets are totally off. What someone ended as before that can be undone, essentially meaning no one is safe anymore. As the last book of this series, I guess I expected it to be darker. The fact that it left me smiling and happy was a pleasant surprise. It gets dark, don’t worry, but it is 100% worth it to get to the end.
Do we get all the answers we want? I think we do. We get to find everyone’s path forward while watching the pieces get in place for Dana’s series to pick up. I even wanted to hug Fritz! Who wants that before this book? Nobody! Now I’ve got soft and fuzzy feelings for everyone (you know, except the big bads). This book was surprising in the best way possible and gave probably the most satisfying end I could have hoped for in the Cesar storyline.
Gotta admit, I'm going to miss Cèsar. I genuinely like the guy. I mean, he can be sort of clueless and a little bumbling at times, but his heart is generally in the right place. Even when he's making all sorts of mistakes with the various relationships in his life. At one point, Cèsar is described as a big, goofy golden retriever and yeaaaaaah. That's it. That's him in a nutshell.
Cèsar is the puppy you can't stay mad at even after he piddles on the rug because he gives you *that look* and your mad just falls to pieces.
Man, I really am going to miss this guy.
But let's talk about this book. Things aren't looking too great for the PA crew. The Breaking has ripped the world open and there's lots of flailing and general craziness. Some of it even from the demons. Cèsar is playing for both OPA and the Apple and THAT'S NOT A GOOD PLACE TO BE, MY FRIEND.
(As an aside, Suzy telling her side of the story when it came to Cèsar gave me a case of the giggles. Who knew her buttoned-up persona hid such a horndog? MAN, I like her and Cèsar together.)
Cèsar, as usual, has managed to get himself in a tough situation. Also as usual, he handles it by causing more chaos than one person should rightfully be able to cause on their own. Stuff happens and he dives into the middle of things and makes even more stuff happen. Often in a spectacular fashion.
Like I said, I'm going to miss this guy.
A solid ending to a series that hands out craziness like candy at Halloween. Here's to demons and magic and people dying left and right. And to Cèsar who somehow ends up on top no matter how insane things get around him.
Well, Sara Reine has done it again! Prolific equals S. M. Reine. Sorry, I'm late coming around with my review. Since Kindle did a bunch of updates I have had quite a time trying to get back to reading because they messed up the text-to-speech they messed up the backgrounds they messed up the font sizes and hardly ever can save my place in a book. And as much as they want to think of themselves as a tablet, I choose to think of Kindle as a reading apparatus. I don't read on my tablet I use my tablet for other things.
Enough of my rant. Cèsar Hawke is not my favorite character in Ms. Raines books. I go into those books kicking and screaming. These books are more male-oriented. Cèsar reminds me of the old detective movies, film noir, I think is called. But when we get past that were back in Ms. Raines universe. Regardless of how San Francisco looks now, through her eyes, it isn't. Same holds true when she incorporates Reno or Las Vegas. It just is more fun reading from her point of view. Cèsar is a witch who is allergic to magic. If you don't think that puts some complications on things, you're not paying attention. It takes a lot of magic to fight a demon. Especially a really big one. So in spite of his allergies, Cèsar does the job.
Even though I would give any of the Cèsar books 3 stars, because they're okay, the overall stories are always superb, exciting, and hard to put down. I can blame these books for nights of lack of sleep. Not because they're so scary, but because you want to see what happens.
Please come to the Sara Reine universe starting with the Six Moon Summer series and keep going through all the different series that Miss Reine puts out. They're all good!
In the book opening we see Cèsar in San Francisco wearing a facemask helping families escape the country while fighting off Brutes with the help of his trusty Desert Eagle and a “Good Samaritan Ninja”??? Flash to the Friederling X, where Cèsar asks the blond man how he knows who he is, and the blond man responds with I am Frtiz Friederling and I have a job for you. In this book Cèsar is not with the OPA, he is a P.I. who seems to have no idea who Fritz, Izzy and Suzy are. Yep, mind blown! When we last saw Cèsar, he was in the cave with Suzy ready to get his Apple tattoo. Wow a lot has happened since we saw Cèsar in the last Preternatural Affairs book! At this point, Ms. Reine starts to explain the back story of how everyone got to this point. And what a great story it is, so many twists and turns along the way. She delves into life during the breaking leading up to Genesis. If you read the Dana McIntyre series, many of your questions about Cèsar are answered. If you have not read that series, now would be a great time to start it! Road to Helltown is the last book in the Preternatural Series (so Ms. Reine says anyway!), however it is not the last time we see Cèsar as he shows up in the Dana McIntyre series, but my personal opinion is that he may also sneak into some other SM Reine books in the future.
All good things come to an end, and this is also the case with the Preternatural Affairs series.
If, as I have, you've been reading the Dana Macintyre stories you may have been wondering what happened to Cèsar since Bitter Thirst and, you know, the whole end of the world bit to get to where he did after Genesis.
The answer dear reader is to be found within the pages of this book. Mostly.
The way this story is told is with a bit of a twist. And in the context of this story, it really works. Yes. There are demons and general bad guys to deal with. And that adds the colourful underlying narrative. But this is really about love, loyalty and family. And then lengths that one will go to to protect said family.
I'm sad to see the end of this series. But I am thrilled that it hasn't just fizzled out. Not that Ms Reine has done that with any of her series. But Cèsar has always been the little bit of light relief. The hero that wasn't always perfectly across everything. His flaws made him more relatable. I, for one, will miss him. But what a way to go.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
As the last book of this series I was really curious to see where it would go and where in the timeline it would stop. Since it is the last of the series it really would not work well as a standalone book, so you need the support of the rest to understand the characters and their connections. I was very happy with this book and would call it my favorite of the series. The style really played out connecting the timeline together. For the most part it is Fritz, Izzy and Suzy telling Cesar a story and filling in a large chunk of time. We get the connection in this book from the Breaking to Genesis and for these characters they played a pivotal role in this part of the story (not as pivotal as Elise and James in their story of course). I really found that I felt most connected with Cesar in this book and understood him more then in the other books of the series.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Like most of SM Reine's series, she knows how to bring them to an end before they drag on too far. Road To Helltown, like many of her other books keeps you on your toes anticipating the next twist and turn and new adventure for her characters.
This book had a different telling from usual, allowing us to really get into each characters head with unique POV changes. It was an intriguing adventure to dive into memories and thoughts of people we have only seen from the outside.
I hope to see Cesar and his friends appear in future SM Reine books. I hope you enjoy!
I received a copy of this book in exchange of a review. Oh Cesar you always make me chuckle with your stupidity. I believe this is the last book in this series but hopefully not the last we'll see of Cesar as he's one of my favorites in this universe. This book took me a little bit to get into but that's because it's been quite awhile since I've read the last one. I thought this was a fitting ending for the series. I've also always liked Suzy but was not feeling her character in this one. Overall a good ending to the series.
The final book in the Preternatural Affairs series takes you on one hell of a ride, I really enjoyed how it bounced between times as it flowed so well. Cèsar has really got himself in a situation where its all going to go to sh$t and we get to see how this all unravels. It was great to see Fritzy, Isabelle and Suzy also while we see out the end of this series and how they all get along now with how things have changed. I do hope we get to see more of them still in other series by SM Reine as I am not ready to say goodbye !
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I reread all the previous books in this series to be sure I had all the details in my head before I read the last book. I really enjoyed this series and the final book was no disappointment. The series was exciting, funny, and quite full of adventure. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy. I don’t write reviews unless the series sparked something in me and this one did. Thank you for being a wonderful author and giving me so many hours of enjoyment.
.. oddly truncated, like it's been cut down from something longer. Can't explain why it just doesn't feel like it's the whole book.
Maybe it's because the last two are so different. The previous one being over stuffed with too many characters, everyone being involved in multiple deceits and it really not being clear who's on which side. This one is more like a slow trying up of loose ends, jumping about through time, and unfortunately lacks any real detail of the genesis itself, instead just dumping the "now this is the state of play" afterwards. Odd.
Yes, she did. Brava, Ms. Reine. What a wild ride. Let's just say, I didn't know whether Caesar's story was my bag at first. But this is an adventure that I am grateful I was to stubborn to miss. Yep...I started with the Omega series and was so impressed I had to go back and star reading all the series from the beginning and by Reine's recommended reading order. Which meant....Caesar and I had to become acquainted. What a lucky, hard headed and obsessive bibliobibuli.
Omg I finally finished this series. First of all the start threw me the fuck out of it due to the time skip I feel like I missed A LOT of story with the breaking and genesis im assuming other series will fill me in tho atleast I enjoyed seeing fritzs more vulnerable side in this tbh bless that man also seeing that this entire series was in first person as it was Caesar telling his whole story at the end was acc a rlly pleasant surprise But also I am left with SO MANY QUESTIONS NOW AFTER GENESIS WTF IS GOING ON shall be continuing the other series xoxoxo

I was very happy to receive this book early! This book was written differently than a lot of the others. The characters were telling each other about things that had already happened, and then we came back to the present. As usual, SM Reine pulls you in and keeps you reading until the very end. I am sure we will see these characters visiting us in her other series, even though this is the end of theirs.
Good ending but I feel like I need more...... It feels like a whole new world just opened up for these two FINALLY! And bam we just got kicked out. I know we have a little bit of Ceasar in with Dana, but it's almost a tease.....and where's Fritzy? Please give up more!!!! Aside from my slightly pathetic on my knees begging....book was fantastic start to end, as if Sarah puts out anything but the Freegin best!!!
I picked up this book in the Nook store because I wanted to see how everything ends my personal review of the book is as follows:
I personally feel like this book could have been added to the end of book 8 in the series and it would have made a lot more sense in terms of storyline continuity. I totally feel like the book threw out most of "Cesar" core personality especially from the middle of the book on words. Overall I personally rate this book a 2 and a half out of 10.
The confusing chaos of the previous book? Things clarify. The start of this book: genuine WTH. But....worth the perseverance. The author is still enamored overly with "Just fooling!" It's interesting though: Caesar through the whole series is portrayed from different angles, or in separate registers like an organ playing. I really liked him in this book. Depths reached.
Cesar, Suzy, Fritz, and Izzy have a he'll of an adventure. Guilt and communication are real issues all people need to work on. But true friends go to amazing lengths for each other. They do not always agree but when it know they have your back anyway What a great feeling. I'm rooting for them.
Great ending to an excellent series! I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and learning all their stories! I am not sure about the changes after Genesis but I will definitely keep reading to find out. I would have loved a few more Fritz and Cesar adventures as Kopis and Aspis though! Loved this series and highly recommend it!,,
When I first started this series I wasn't sure I would like it. I knew the author never let me down before so I kept on and I'm so glad I did. Well written and a perfect ending in my opinion.
In the middle I wasn't sure I was pissed at Caesar but all in all it it came together in the end always keeps on the edge of your seat feels like you're right there in the book always keeps you wanting more sad the series ended
A strong story. I really enjoyed the new addition and look forward to the next installment. The beginning was a bit jarring, but the ending recovered splendidly.
I don’t think I can say that I love SM Reine’s books too many times…. Because I so do, even if I don’t like the characters. (I’m looking at you Riley.) This series was my introduction to the rest of her books and oh my did the ending evolve sooo far from how it first started out. I know now, after reading everything else she’s written, that it was to be expected. I think my opinion of Cesar stayed pretty much the same throughout the series. Which is odd seeing how my opinions on other characters has shifted so much during their series and the other series where they show up. I don’t think he has shown up in other series yet and I’m looking forward to it because I love his personality. You learn a ton about him, but this is the last book in the series so… wth? I sooo love how he got them all back though, not spoiling it because that is a great plot to work through when you read the book. You think you know him, then BAM just kidding! I love the relationship between Cesar, Fritz, Isobel, and Suzy. It is just… I love her books okay? One of the things I love about all of her books is how they’re connected in one way or another. You get to see the same event through many diverse eyes thus adding to the complexity and awesomeness of the universe as a whole.
