Mở đầu đưa người đọc đến biệt thự Đêm mưa - ngôi biệt thự ba tầng, kiến trúc thiết kế theo chữ "雨" (mưa), thuộc sở hữu của ông Bạch Cảnh Phu. Tuy nhiên, ông Cảnh Phu cùng vợ và cô con gái bị sát hại trong chính biệt thự Đêm mưa.
Bối cảnh truyện diễn ra ở Hiện tại, khi ngôi biệt thự đã thuộc sở hữu của em trai Cảnh Phu, Nhậm Trạch, gia đình ông Trạch không thường xuyên sống ở biệt thự. Chàng thám tử nghiệp dư Lâm Nhược Bình, được giáo sư Trạch mời đến điều tra tình tiết của vụ án anh trai ông ta. Tuy nhiên, trong biệt thự lúc đó còn có con gái ông Trạch và nhóm bạn của cô ấy.
Ở cuốn sách này có phương thức "án mạng phòng kín", liên tiếp các cụ giết chóc xảy ra và đặt câu hỏi ở đây, Những vụ án này có liên quan đến vụ án năm xưa không? Phần đầu truyện xen kẽ giữa nhiều lời kể của các nhân vật, thú thật là mình thấy nó không khác gì YA cả, lời kể của mấy cô cậu thiếu niên dành tình yêu, mối ác cảm cho nhau bla bla... Chủ yếu sau cùng là để đánh lừa người đọc.
Thực sự mình có tò mò về thủ thuật trong vụ án này, kể cả án mạng liên tiếp cứ xảy ra khiến mình càng mong đợi. Mà phải nói sao nhở... cách kể chuyện hơi dài dòng và lan man với mình. Nhân vật không để lại ấn tượng nào cho mình, đặc biệt là nhân vật thám tử CỰC MỜ NHẠT! Mình có ngạc nhiên khi bối cảnh truyện được tiết lộ - bởi nó cũng là quả báo ảnh hưởng đến đời sau. Dù vậy, quyển này khiến mình bối rối, cách miêu tả thủ thuật ở Vụ thứ ba, quá mệt!!! Sau đó sự thật về những cái chết ở Hiện tại được tiết lộ, thú thật là mình vẫn THẤY KHÓ TIN!!! Cách tác giả viết ở phần đầu không hẳn khớp với phần tiết lộ này nên mình hơi hụt hẩng.
Đặc biệt nhất, phần mình tò mò là "sự thật về vụ án năm xưa" cũng chẳng đặc biệt gì cho cam, cảm thấy rất thất vọng trong khi mình rất trông đợi ở nó. Nhưng mình không phủ nhận rằng tác giả có sáng tạo trong thủ pháp phòng kín.

I didn't figure it out (either the who or the how) which is good. I've always believed these sorts of stories aren't quite so easily pigeonholed, very much existing in a space apart from regular mysteries/crime fiction, and this book is no exception.
The story loses a bit in the dialogue as well as the inner thoughts of some of the characters, both of which are at times rather silly and in many ways more appropriate for YA readers.
It's not exactly my favorite sort of impossible-crime mystery, but it's still pretty good.

This Chinese locked-room mystery recently published in English pays homage to Golden Age impossible crime tricks in its own wonderfully unique way. I didn't come close to guessing the clever ending, which admittedly was a bit far-fetched, but the clues were all presented in plain sight, making this a satisfying read when in the mood for a puzzle plot mystery.
I loved the set-up in which the Chinese character for the word "rain" was used to great effect, with the secluded, sprawling house built in the shape of that character.

Not for the faint-hearted. Gruesome. But very ingenious and suspensefull. Not for those seeking realism. But those that do not mind that a book is not true to life, this is a winner. I loved it.

Khúc mai táng Đêm Mưa - Lâm Tư Ngạn
Khi chưa đọc, mình nghĩ rằng tiêu đề sách sẽ hướng đến những vụ án mạng xảy ra vào một đêm mưa, nhưng thực ra “Đêm Mưa” là tên của căn biệt thự với cấu trúc khi nhìn từ trên xuống sẽ thấy giống với chữ “雨” (“mưa” - tiếng Trung). Tác giả đã dựa trên cách xây dựng căn biệt thự này để tạo ra các hiện trường án mạng. Những trang đầu tiên là bản đồ chi tiết kết cấu căn nhà, giúp người đọc dễ tưởng tượng và hình dung rõ vị trí của các nhân vật trong truyện. Dù mình không có hay đối chiếu lại với bản đồ lắm nhưng mình vẫn đánh giá là nó khá hữu ích vì sẽ không bị mất phương hướng khi đọc.
Mình vô cùng ấn tượng với phần mở đầu câu chuyện. Tác giả vẽ lên một vụ án mạng kinh hoàng về cái chết bí ẩn của gia đình ba người trong căn biệt thự “Đêm Mưa” với nghi can duy nhất là tình nhân của người vợ, sau này đã th.ắt c.ổ t.ự s.á.t trong tù, và khép lại vụ án trong bế tắc vì không tìm ra hung thủ thực sự đã giết người chồng.
Tuy nhiên ở phần cuối truyện khi thủ phạm được tiết lộ thì mình thấy không đủ sức thuyết phục. Cảnh sát hoàn toàn có thể dựa vào khám nghiệm hiện trường và pháp y về độ nông, sâu của các vết ch.ém trên mặt người chồng, hướng ch.ém, lực ch.ém để khoanh vùng nghi phạm. Ngoài ra còn có thể dựa vào dấu chân để biết được ai là người đã ra vào căn phòng. Vậy nên việc vụ án rơi vào bế tắc lại trở nên khiên cưỡng.
Nhìn chung “Khúc mai táng Đêm Mưa” có nội dung rùng rợn nhưng phần kết lại khá chưng hửng. Một năm sau khi án mạng xảy ra thì có những thanh niên trẻ đến chơi và có bốn cô gái trẻ ch.ết trong phòng kín mà không rõ nguyên nhân. Lâm Tư Ngạn miêu tả rất kinh khủng về những cái x.ác ch.ết, đặc biệt là cái xác không đầu, khiến người đọc không khỏi rùng mình về sự dã man của hung thủ. Không những gây ra một cái chết, hắn còn liên tục gây ra những cái chết khác mà vẫn không hề bị phát hiện.
Vậy mà khi kẻ sát nhân lộ diện, mình có hơi hụt hẫng. Tuy mọi thứ được giải thích khá logic và có phần sáng tạo nhưng mình vẫn có chút thất vọng, vì trong thực tế thì đó là một điều rất khó xảy ra. Có thể tác giả muốn nhấn mạnh đến kết cấu đặc biệt của căn biệt thự, nhưng việc xảy ra tai nạn liên tiếp như thế thì thật phi thực tế.
Ngoài ra truyện có đề cập vài chi tiết chẳng liên quan. Mặt trong bìa sau có nhắc đến những vị nữ thần cai quản vận mệnh nhưng họ không đóng vai trò gì trong xuyên suốt cuốn sách. Các cô gái bị gi.ết chẳng đắc tội gì với thần linh và cũng không có nhân vật nào quan tâm nhiều đến mấy chuyện tâm linh đấy.
Tóm lại, “Khúc mai táng Đêm Mưa” sẽ thích hợp cho những ai muốn đọc giải trí hoặc mới đọc trinh thám. Còn nếu bạn muốn đọc một cuốn trinh thám mà đọc xong phải thốt lên bất ngờ tuyệt vời và nhớ mãi không quên thì nên tìm đến những lựa chọn khác.

The book was first published in Chinese in 2006 and has now been translated into English by the author himself.
The setting is a three-storied mansion in the mountains. It is shaped like the Chinese single character word for “rain” and is called the House of Rain.
The mansion was constructed by Jingfu Bai, renowned entrepreneur, who lives there with his wife Yinghan Qiu and his daughter Yuyun Bai.
In the beginning of the book, there are detailed floor plans for each floor. The reader is advised to print these and refer to them while reading the book, otherwise it may be difficult to follow the story.
One night, Renze Bai, a professor of English and younger brother of Jingfu Bai visits the mansion along with his wife. Just as they reach the mansion, they notice a man named Weikun Yang, an ex-boyfriend of Yinghan Qiu hurrying away from the house. Subsequently they find all 3 occupants of the house murdered. Jingfu’s head has been beaten in with a hatchet, while his wife and daughter are both strangled.
Yang is arrested. He claims innocence but the evidences are against him. Subsequently, he commits suicide in the detention centre.
About a year later, Renze along with his daughter Lingsha, who is a student in the English department move into the mansion. His wife has died in the meantime. The other 2 occupants of the house are the maidservants Cindy and Ru.
Just before moving into the house, Renze receives a strange and anonymous email suggesting that Yang was not responsible for the crimes and that the real murderer was still at large.
Renze decides to call Ruoping Lin, a professor of Philosophy and amateur detective , to be a guest in the house and reinvestigate the matter.
The visit of Ruoping coincides with that of five of Lingsha’s college classsmates who are there to spend the winter vacation.
The weather is very bad and there is heavy rain as a result of which there is a landslide cutting off the house from the rest of the world.
Soon after Ruoping’s arrival, the bodies start accumulating. There are three further killings, all in impossible circumstances, and then a seeming suicide.
Finally, Ruoping is able to solve the case.
The novel is suspenseful with several twists. The solutions are ingenious and original. Though it is fairly clued, it is doubtful whether any reader will be able to guess either the methods or the culprit(s).

2.5 stars. Loved the mystery and the solution, but had problems with how the characters were written (more specifically, the female characters). Also, a key aspect of the mystery was made clear to the reader half-way through the book, while the in-story detective discovered it only at the end of the story, which made detective’s pov chapters quite frustrating.

What a mind bender, I could be given the clues ten times over and I would never have got to the solution, it seems so obvious after its stated.
A very enjoyable and cunning locked door mystery. The characters on the whole were very well done, the young boys a bit annoying but not detracting from the story.
There is only one bit that I didnt notice explained but it is the only bit that really ties the original murderer to the crime.
Everything is is cleared up and so complex I feel a dunce at not being able to guess it.
For me this book is 4.5/5 but rounded up because these Locked Room Internationals are superb books bringing wonderful mysteries to English language publishing and excellent additions to Amazon's Kindle Unlimited. This is my second or third and certainly wont be my last.

An absolute must read.
This is one of the best locked room mysteries I have ever read. The writing is a little stilted but that may be due to the translation. Nonetheless it doesn't take away from the story. Read it - you won't be disappointed.

Szu-Yen Lin è un autore giovanissimo (basta guardare la foto sul retro) taiwanese, considerato uno dei più originali autori di mystery asiatici. Sorvolando sull'ottima introduzione che spiega esaurientemente le origini e lo sviluppo del cosiddetto "giallo ad enigma" in Asia, e in particolare in Taiwan, l'autore crea un romanzo davvero memorabile, allo stesso tempo fresco, originale e dalle atmosfere classicheggianti, rifacendosi chiaramente alla tradizione occidentale (molto carriana l'atmosfera, di queeniana memoria le ottime deduzioni del detective dilettante Ruoping Lin).La storia è ambientata in una bizzarra villa, chiamata "House of rain", ossia la "casa della pioggia",per via della sua forma che ritrae il carattere cinese che sta appunto per "pioggia", che è stata un anno prima scenario di un orrenda strage, in cui la famiglia dell'imprenditore-poeta Jingfu Bai è stata brutalmente decimata, apparentemente dall'amante di sua moglie, il quale si è poi successivamente suicidato in prigione. Tutto sembra concluso, la casa viene occupata(solo una parte, lasciando sfitti i locali connessi col delitto) per un breve periodo dal fratello della vittima, Renzo Bai e da sua figlia Lingsha, la quale invita per un weekend alcuni suoi compagni di classe. Sembra un normalissimo weekend (sebbene di normale, in una casa molto ampia, di 3 piani e con luci soffuse ovunque, dove peraltro incombe ancora l'ombra della tragedia passata, non ci sia poi molto), ma Lin viene chiamato dal nuoco proprietario della villa per indagare nuovamente sul caso precedente, per via di alcune email criptiche che gli sono state inviate. Durante la sua permanenza Lin, avrà però ben poco tempo per pensare alla strage passata: si ritroverà infatti a dover fare i conti con ben altri 4 omicidi impossibili (2 persino in camere la cui unica via di accesso era costantemente sorvegliata), che sembrano andare oltre ogni logica razionale, ed il tutto contornato dall'incessante ticchettio della pioggia. Bloccati dal resto del mondo per via di una frana, Lin dovrà usare logica e raziocinio per dover spiegare l'inspiegabile, scoprire torbidi segreti e verità impensate. Lin riesce, con la sua scrittura agile, con i suoi continui cliff-hanger e cambi di focalizzazione, ad intrigare e a rendere la storia molto scorrevole. La soluzione di 3 di questi delitti si può spiegare davvero con una parola sola, che lascia a bocca aperta, perchè è qualcosa di mai visto, completamente originale nel campo giallistico. Non si può dire quindi che l'autore pecchi di originalità. Ma, nonostante ciò, questi delitti implicano davvero troppe coincidenze, un pò tirate per i capelli. La soluzione dell'ultimo delitto è sicuramente la migliore, molto originale e brillante, che ho apprezzato moltissimo. Ah, verrà anche risolto il vecchio delitto, o meglio, il lettore scoprirà la verità: verità macabra, non nuovissima nel panorama giallistico, ma gradevole (indizi sono disseminati nella trama del presente). Insomma, un ottimo libro, con brillanti camere chiuse e un'atmosfera davvero molto ben costruita. Unica pecca è forse l'ingenuità, forse dovuta anche alla giovinezza dell'autore (che peraltro ha tradotto in inglese la sua stessa opera), in alcuni punti della soluzione e in alcuni comportamenti dei personaggi, che sono però ben delineati. Quindi 4 stelle.

Correctly guessed there was an elevator room because of the wheelchair hint and also identified the professor as at least the fourth murderer because he may suspect the clever girl as the murderer incorrectly. I didn't like a lot of it though: intense scenes of violence/rape/necrophilia, lot of usage of fate as an instrument in the murders (and I'm not completely certain it's fair for us readers to know that the elevator isn't working well and would still go up even if someone's head was somehow sticking in the way of the elevator - most of the ones I go in don't even move if the door can't close), and then it's difficult to follow along with the map while the characters are running about. Also, side note, but the house structure doesn't really matter a lot. As long as you know it's an elevator, that suffices, and there's not a ton of importance of certain rooms. Oh and lastly, it's a little difficult to follow Chinese names since I'm not used to them.
It was a short, easy read but a bit convoluted for my taste and cumbersome to follow along with where people were and such. And I don't care for "fate" as a culprit in 3 of 4 cases. Overall disappointing - I think I like more elegant and simpler locked room tricks that don't feel as contrived.
Oh and I disliked a lot of the characters, so that didn't help. The only one I liked was the smart girl who was killed, and even her, I thought it was dumb she didn't announce the truth of the elevator to everyone right when she found it, esp if she was gonna be careless and drink poison. (And it was silly to send her own name to the professor encoded as well.)

Điểm cộng duy nhất là phần dịch thuật mượt mà, không có chỗ nào khiến mình lấn cấn, còn lại ấn tượng của mình với bộ này khá tệ.
Về nội dung, không có gì quá đặc sắc. Hàng loạt các vụ án diễn ra trong phòng kín, tại một biệt thư biệt lập với thế giới bên ngoài. Vì lí do thời tiết nên cảnh sát không thể trợ giúp kịp thời, các thành viên trong biệt thự phải cùng nhau tự sinh tồn.
Motip này quá quen thuộc, cách triển khai của tác giả cũng không có gì mới mẻ, chưa kể cách khai thác cũng thiếu điểm nhấn.
Điểm nhìn tường thuật không cố định, POV nhân vật xoay chuyển còn nhanh hơn cả tàu lượn siêu tốc. Thỉnh thoảng đọc mà không biết được đang nhìn từ góc độ của nhân vật nào, phải đến mấy trang sau mới rõ được.

Về nội dung, không có gì quá đặc sắc. Hàng loạt các vụ án diễn ra trong phòng kín, tại một biệt thư biệt lập với thế giới bên ngoài. Vì lí do thời tiết nên cảnh sát không thể trợ giúp kịp thời, các thành viên trong biệt thự phải cùng nhau tự sinh tồn.
Motip này quá quen thuộc, cách triển khai của tác giả cũng không có gì mới mẻ, chưa kể cách khai thác cũng thiếu điểm nhấn.
Điểm nhìn tường thuật không cố định, POV nhân vật xoay chuyển còn nhanh hơn cả tàu lượn siêu tốc. Thỉnh thoảng đọc mà không biết được đang nhìn từ góc độ của nhân vật nào, phải đến mấy trang sau mới rõ được.

This book belongs to the school of locked room mysteries that depends on the particular architecture of a building. The version I read is the English translation of this Chinese book. The story takes place in a large three-story mansion in Taiwan that is built with the shape of the Chinese character for "rain". I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it is well written and easy to read. On the other hand, the structure of the building is so complex and a lot of the story depends on the reader's understand of the relative geography of the rooms, that I find myself having to constantly refer to the floor plans of the three floors, which are set out in the beginning of the book. I find that a big distraction from my enjoyment of the story. However, the plot is quite clever. Spoiler alert: it involves elevators that are disguised as rooms. Most of the deaths involved were just accidents caused by death trap elevators.

Firstly, the way the main mystery was unfolded is quite good. The author gives readers enough hints to guess how each of the murders was executed.
However, the detective in the book does not solve all the problems until the very end, it's frustrating to watch. Reading the story doesn't prompt any emotion in me as it should for other horror/mystery series. The pace of the story should have been fast and urgent, but because the characters were so relaxed, it didn't feel like that at all. There are supposed to be a few murders and everyone still goes on on their own, staying alone and such.
The characters are built quite poorly, especially the men in the story. Other than the MC, they are all quite shitty bastards with brains full of lust and revenge. Where is the morality? Where is the common sense? Not exactly a great read, but ok.

An interesting tale - an amateur detective is called to the House of Rain, so called because it was designed in the shape of the Chinese character for Rain. The current owner is the brother of the man who designed the house and was brutally murdered the year before, along with his wife and daughter. The same weekend the detective visits, the owner's daughter is at home from college with several classmates. Slowly, they each begin dying in horrific ways with the survivors being suspected of the crimes, however, the true killer is quite an unique twist.

A very smooth read, took me only one day to finish, but the afterthought lingered for quite a while. Some scenes were gruesome, but not exaggerated.
I had some bad taste though, regarding the maidservants. After the first murder, they were questioned together with the rest alright. But then, when counting the suspects of the key theft, only 6?? Probably because one of the maidservants is an Indonesian, I got a bit emotional :-)

The sheer audacity ,imagination and a new locked room murder method never before seen are the highlights. Not for people new to impossible crimes and can be very technical and far fetched sometimes, but in the end a quick enjoyable read with the right kind of carrian atmosphere thrown in not without its faults but overall enjoyable.

Một cuốn sách "tạm". Ổn và cứ bình bình từ cốt truyện, phá án, hành vi. Đến cả cuối truyện nó vẫn cứ bình bình như thế, mình thích cuốn này ở việc tạo không khí "biệt lập", ngột ngạt y như bối cảnh. Hay nhất có lẽ ở giữa truyện khi những cái chết liên tục xảy ra.

Great title. Interesting solution, very shin-honkaku and hard to guess. Not an engaging cast of characters. The prose and dialogue are bare-bones and lacking in voice, though it’s hard to tell if this is a translational issue. I enjoyed it but would not consider it a genre stand-out.

Very nice method. Very poetic use of rain.
However, the motivations and characters are frustratingly simple. Additionally, the translation into English was not too great and relied on many cliches and redundant phrases. Only for those obsessed with locked room murders, I think.

FIRST READING 7/10/20: 3 Stars
Definitely worth a read, though for my taste it’s a little too reliant on architectural details (in more ways than one) and a little thin on pretty much everything except shocking twists. It has those in spades. I look forward to reading more from this writer and hopefully LRI continues doing the Lord’s work!

I couldn’t remember too much about this one from my first read over three years ago except that like many other “shin honkaku” books I’ve read its murder tricks were preposterous and its characterizations very slight. Honestly, these kinds of books almost aren’t even proper novels: they’re like a crossbreed—mystery novels mixed with puzzle games. I love ‘em.
But Death in the House of Rain just might have the most preposterous murder tricks and the most cardboard characters. That’s not even a dig. Of all the locked room whodunnits one of them has to have the most of everything, right, including the most self-indulgent coincidences. Good grief, this book is coincidence-riddled. The daringly ludicrous ending is the equivalent to the final page of a Hercule Poirot featuring a color pinup of Dame Agatha in the altogether.
The plethora of coincidences I can abide. And the major gimmick I really like (without spoilers, the up and down gimmick.) What’s hard to swallow is the generous sprinkling of fairy dust to make all of the tricks work. Just one example: some bewitched glue to magically hold a saw in place. Also, at least this time around, I had a hard time envisioning the actual tricks.
Overall, Szu-Yen Lin did a great job translating to English his own work. I’m guessing he’s the only Chinese (or Taiwanese?) author published by LRI so far. This month (October 2023) marks the 6th anniversary of the publication of Death in the House of Rain in English, actually. I really hope Lord of the Locked Room John Pugmire brings us another of Lin’s novels soon. Although LRI seems to be putting out less and less as time goes on instead of more and more. Which is ironic considering these types of mysteries seem to be increasingly popular in extremely large part due to the efforts of Mr. Pugmire. A major publisher has even already republished an LRI title and produced a sequel. Hopefully we’ll have many more LRI books to boggle our minds in the future.
