WHO SAYS CHRISTMAS HAS TO BE COZY?Christmas Eve, 1923

Prepare for tales of unexplained murders, long-concealed mysteries, strange visitors in the night, and a secret in Posie’s own past which haunts her to this very day…

Join Posie Parker, London’s premier female Private Detective, and Chief Inspector Lovelace of New Scotland Yard as they spend Christmas Eve at Rebburn Abbey, home of the Earl and Countess of Cardigeon. Each house guest is invited to share a personal mystery, but what unfolds turns out to be less a cozy cornucopia of fire-side Christmas cheer than a series of curiously interlinked and unsettling mysteries.

But then, who promised that any of the tales had to be cozy?

And could it be, even at Rebburn Abbey on Christmas Eve, that the past can overshadow the present, casting dangerous shadows on those who don’t suspect? Does danger and the presence of evil lurk here?

This is a stylish Golden Age of Crime mystery which will appeal to fans of Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey. 'A Christmas Case' is a novella in the Posie Parker Mystery Series, and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story in its own right.

Cambridge-educated, British-born L.B. Hathaway writes historical fiction. She worked as a lawyer at Lincoln’s Inn in London for almost a decade before becoming a full-time writer. She brings her love of detective novels set in the Golden Age of Crime and an obsession with English history to her own writing.

The Posie Parker series of cosy crime novels span the 1920s. They each combine a core central mystery, an exploration of the reckless glamour of the age and a feisty protagonist who you would love to have as your best friend.

Her other interests, in no particular order, are: very fast downhill skiing, theatre-going, drinking strong tea, Tudor history, exploring castles and generally trying to cram as much into life as possible.

What a Christmas Eve this is! L.B. Hathaway’s A Christmas Case, A Posie Parker Nouvella is intriguing and dynamic read. As the holiday season is upon us, I decided to grab this nouvella to read after Thanksgiving dinner, and I am very pleased I did. Posie and Chief Inspector Lovelace of New Scotland Yard decide to attend a gathering in Yorkshire at Rebburn Abbey. As the English are wont to be - the group appears eccentric and not quite right to Posie. The Chief Inspector also feels something is amiss. As the evening progresses, more odd events take place. As Posie retires after all the doings, there is a knock on her bedroom. As Posie opens her door, what paralyzing information is she about to hear? Very well done!

I liked the historical fiction aspects of this novella okay but the 'mystery' part of it was too fraught with coincidences (and basically no detection at all). Plus I didn't care for the little bit of paranormal that was slipped in.

This is an interesting addition to the Posie Parker historical mystery series. It's 1923 and both Posie and Inspector Lovelace find themselves at the home of Posie's longtime friend Rufus, Earl of Cardigeon, to celebrate Christmas. In addition to those three and Rufus's troubled wife Dolly, also a good friend of Posie, there's an odd assortment of guests. We have a major and his wife, new neighbors to Rufus, and a couple of relatively well-known entertainers.

Before all are to set out for Christmas midnight mass, Rufus decides everyone should relate a real-life mystery from the past that had an impact on them. Both Posie and Lovelace go a couple decades back in their lives to recount their stories and, as coincidence in fiction would have it, everything is interconnected, from their stories to the guests assembled at the party.

This is entertaining, in spite of relying so heavily on coincidence, and we learn a little more about Posie's past. And the story ends with a minor cliffhanger about someone else from her past who shows up now in her present. To be continued, I should hope.

One minor annoyance: Rufus, an earl, is directly addressed as "Your Grace". No, no. He's not a duke. He is just a "My lord". This author is British. That is a mistake I wouldn't expect to find except in books written by American authors.

Wow! It has been a while since I have read the previous Posie Parker, and I have quite forgotten the characters. This novella brings them all back to vivid life in a story that kept me turning pages until the end. I cannot wait for the next installment.

random cliff hangers

was that cliff hanger at the end necessary? and it was all a strange bit of coincidence. i want to ask question but i don’t want to give things away. we need a discussion group.

I've been a fan of Posie Parker since I downloaded the first book.

For a novella, this certainly packs in a gripping storyline.

This is so good I'm going to go back to the beginning of the series and read them all again!

Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas – 4.5 stars

A Christmas house party at Rufus, Earl Cardigeon’s ancestral home is not a very happy one. The huge old place is bitterly cold inside and out. It is snowing on Christmas Eve and after dinner, the guests move into the earl’s private parlour as it is the warmest room in the house. Before heading off to Midnight Mass, Rufus suggests that some of the guests tell a story about a mystery that is personal to them, as a way of getting to know each other. Rufus begins with a story about Christmas time in Verdun in 1917. After that, one of the guests stands up to take her turn, and after she has finished Posie tells her personal mystery.

This novella is the sixth Posie Parker mystery, although the previous five are novels. The author sets the scene superbly, with descriptions of the surroundings and the people, coupled with feelings and emotions. The reader can feel the tension in the room but not pick the source. The story is written in the third person from Posie’s point of view, and she is certainly feeling the tension, but like the reader, can’t pinpoint the source. The tension escalates as Inspector Lovelace tells his personal mystery and there is a sense of something terrible to come.

The conclusion of the story doesn’t tie up all the loose ends tidily, but that’s all right, as just in real life, things don’t always end in a tidy manner. It also leaves the way open for possible resolutions and/or more information in the next Posie mystery. I have read all the Posie mysteries, and I think this one might just be the best.

Well-written and edited (apart from “the ‘amount’ of so-called mysteries”, which should be ‘number’ of; and Posie’s mother is described as a “small, dark delicate woman” but later in the book as a “statuesque Madonna”). Picky? Yes, but I noticed them.

A curious little novella. It almost feels as if the author wasn't quite happy with all the strands drawn together in previous books and decided to shake everything up ready for future books. Don't get me wrong it's still a nice read built up slowly until you can hardly wait for the final reveal and also adds more depth to the main characters but for me that feeling persisted.

A very UN~Christmas story... or not? Posie who was almost always without anybody close or important to celebrate the holidays with (ever since I, as a reader, have known her), took Inspector Lovelace and his toddler daughter Philly to Rebburn Abbey, home of reformed alcoholic and now Earl of Cardigeon, Rufus and his wife Dolly, Posie's friend. Dolly, after giving birth to the heir, was unbeknownst to those at the house party including Rufus, was at death's door and Yorkshire's cold snowy December weather was not helping instead it was aggravating Dolly's pneumonia plus Rufus started drinking again. To while away the hour while waiting for the Midnight Mass, Rufus asked for each one of them to tell a personal ghost story. He started first with the ghost of a dead comrade saving them during the Great War. Next the cabaret star and guest sang a poignant and evocative Irish ballad about a lost love. Then Posie's turn came and she told of a murdered man's body she and her brother and half~Italian mother saw by the beach during their annual seaside holiday and there was also the disappearance of her mother's favorite dance partner... both unusual events remain unsolved... and the family never went back on that Kent seaside holiday again... that happened in the summer of 1903 when Posie was 11 year's old. The untold part of her story was that, on that same year, on Christmas morning, her mother walked out on them and Rufus, Richard's friend at Eton who was spending the holidays at the Vicarage with them for the first time, was a witness to this. Then it was Inspector Lovelace's turn and he told a gruesome dastardly tale of a burning house with all except one resident suffocated and burned to death including 3 little girls who jumped to their deaths and Lovelace's superior officer who tried to save them, died too... for the rest of the household had their doors locked from the outside or nailed shut. This maybe a novella but it was full of IMPACT and all unexplained events (at least the criminal ones) had their endings... the wheels of Justice grinding slowly for 20 years but they grind exceedingly fine for Lovelace and so were the other Ghost stories ~ real (as in the Ghost from the Past for Posie) or otherwise (pertaining to Dolly's miraculous recovery). Brilliant!

P.S. ~ Since I have not yet read Book 5, I do not know where or what happened to the absent Mrs. Lovelace, hence the urgency to find and read 'Murder Of A Movie Star'.

Novella.
What a delightful installment to the series!
PG -12 only because children probably wouldn't enjoy it.
No sex
No strong language
Cozy mystery style violence - it's referred to, we understand, but no stomach-turning detail

Plot no spoilers:
Posie and several houseguests, most of whom she does not know, are invited to spend Christmas at her best friend's manor house. To while away the time before dinner, they are challenged to share a personal mystery - a puzzling incident, light or serious from their pasts, that was never resolved.
The famous stage star starts, oddly enough, with an old Irish ballad; the policeman tells of an unsolved case; and Posie adds a troubling memory.
A snowstorm rages outside. A member of the party is clearly ill. A Dickensonian atmosphere descends.

As we read we wonder whether any of these could be resolved that night, and as mystery readers we begin to speculate about whether any of them are intertwined.

ONE criticism: There's a sequence where it seems the butler is out in the workshop, but then it turns out to be the husband. Even when I re-read it, I believe this was a plot error that should have been caught in the proofreading. It is the husband, by the way.

Days and days after reading, I still smile at the way L.B. Hathaway crafted the conclusion.

ENJOY!
Ms Hathaway, please-please-PLEASE give us more Posie stories.

Posie Parker and Chief Inspector Lovelace of New Scotland Yard have been invited to spend Christmas Eve at Rebburn Abbey, home of the Earl and Countess of Cardigeon. Posie is there because the Earl was a friend of her deceased brother. And she also knows and is a friend of Dolly the Countess. It's never really clear why Chief Inspector Lovelace and his young daughter are invited.

It's Christmas eve and the Earl wants a "ghost" story from each of the guests. Some pass, some share. Posie talks about finding her first body as a child while on holiday, however, she doesn't share the whole story. Inspector Lovelace also tells a story about a case that's haunted him since his early days on the force. It's a horrible story about arson and murder. However, why he would tell such a gruesome story on Christmas eve becomes quite clear by the end of it.

It's a very twisty novella set at Christmas that had me interested from the get go. The characters and the plot are very strong and intriguing.

Some ghost laid to rest!

What a wonderful story involving the past tragedy's of a past thought lost forever! Some old cases for Chief Superintendent Lovelace, & perhaps Posie. A life saved by perhaps supernatural powers. Plus some old mysteries solved forever put to rest , but some solved with life changing prospects for the future. But still no wedding YET! Maybe in the spring!??! I hope all enjoy this lovely novella as I did. I. Just sorry there won't be another Posie Parker till next yr, I believe in April. Not sure on that no the tho so you might want to check it out on the author's web site or blog.

As the author says, this novella which is part of the Posie Parker female detective cosy historical mystery series pays "homage" to an Agatha Christie story which also has characters "gathered together at a party at Christmas, storytelling." It is not usually in the list in order of the Posie Parker novels and I stumbled on it by accident. Based on publication date, it comes between "The Murder of a Movie Star" and "Murder in Venice" but some details don't seem to fit and it actually should be read AFTER "Murder in Venice." It gives more details about Posie's past, and we can only hope that more information will be forthcoming.

I am a big fan of L. B. Hathaway and have read all her books. Posie Parker is one of the most intelligent and capable women detectives in literature. This novella brings together a seemingly unconnected group of people in a great English hall on Christmas Eve with a blizzard howling outside. In a manner reminiscent of Charles Dickens, Hathaway connectsthe characters in a way that astonishes the reader. There is a supernatural element that adds even more intrigue. Hathaway always leaves her readers longing for more.

A Christmas Case [Novella] (Posie Parker Mystery (#6.5) — L.B. Hathaway (10 chapters + Epilogue) June 8, 2023

A short little story that transitions between the dark, jarring former book where the leads both had a very bad ending to this one where the story, though still depressed overall, feels a bit more uplifting.

I read this in one day. No narrator; read in Kindle Unlimited. thought an audio of this would’ve been nice!) As such, this book can be skipped, but in hindsight, it does fill a few gaps a reader may find stubble within subsequent stories in the series.

Three stars.

This novella features Posie Parker, a private detective in 1920's London. She is spending Christmas at Rebburn Abbey with friends, including Inspector Lovelace from New Scotland Yard.dde When guests are invited to share their stories of "personal mysteries," Christmas Eve suddenly turns dark. I enjoyed this novella, and I plan to read other books in the series. I enjoyed the main character, and I found the story interesting and unusual. Excellent holiday reading.

Not sure what to really make of this novella. It is Christmas so an odd assortment of folks are gathered at the country residence of Posie's best friend. The British ghost story tradition is explored and dark pasts and old scores are revealed, but beyond the telling of stories a real life ghost story seems to play out. Really quite chilling and a bit out of character but also full of character of development.

Posie's predicaments

I like the Parker Posey books, but this one seemed rather disjointed to me. Each chapter was almost like a short story. There was some resolution of Posie's past issues but I just felt like the book lacked meatiness. Enjoyable, light, but not memorable for me.

This Posie Parker cosy crime mystery was one of the best yet from L B Hathaway – a classic 1920s locked room mystery, complete with creepy dolls house and a historical mystery about a fire. Does a lot in a relatively few pages – I loved it. Get it now for curling up with at Christmas – a mystery that keeps you guessing and is quite thrilling.

Highly recommended.

A Christmas Case

Posie is spending Christmas with Rufus and Dolly in Yorkshire. Among the other guests is Inspector Lovelace. For various reasons this is one Christmas Posie won't forget in a hurry.
This Posie Parker Novella excavation read and contains many different themes. I found it a great read and a relaxing way to spend some time on Christmas Day.

Posie and Inspector Lovelace are invited, with others, to the estate of Rufus and Dolly for Christmas. The group begins to tell ghost stories. Posie tells of her childhood trip to the beach where she and her mom and brother find a body. Lovelace tells of an early case of a tragic and fatal fire. Both cases were never solved. Will something happen at Christmas that relates to both cases?

Strange Subject Matter for a Christmas Cozy

I like Posie Parker books and have recommended them to my family. However, this one surprised me. It took a little while to get to the mystery, and then the background to the problem I thought was rather gruesome for a Christmas cozy. I guessed part of whodunit and how.

Hoping that the next book is a little more cheery.

Locked Room Mystery with a twist

I enjoy Posie Parker and I would have given it a 5 star, but it was a bit grim for a Christmas mystery. But it's full of enough twists and turns to keep you reading. I look forward to her other adventures!

interesting backstory

A story of what took place in Posie’s childhood. After reading the book that takes place at Rye this fills in the missing parts and people such as Dulcie and how she and Posie met.
