Burgundy Gloves is the introductory installment for the Mighty One series written by Julia David It is an endearing Christian based historical romance. This is definitely a look at life from riches to rags, resulting in experiencing life through in opposite circumstances. The author is perfectly able to keep the reader enthralled and turning pages . . . without introducing too many extraneous descriptions.

Life is constantly changing and sometimes one doesn't relish this when it appears unbidden. However, you can look at them positively and be thankful or negatively and live in misery. Julia David developed the characters and plotline not only through bouts of adversity but pitted against the unknown.

Walking into the past through a fictional adventure like this one was so mesmerizing. The incident that set off the initial incident could be described as a blessing in disguise.

Excerpt: "Love. You can bear all things because of love."

Alillsion seems to view her current life differently every time she turns around. Her presence definitely caused a stir of emotions for two young men not used to being in the vicinity of female company with the exclusion of their elders.

Clutching her mother’s Burgundy Gloves, Allison can only hope time will awaken her from this awful nightmare. Strange people, strange ideas and a strange young man looking long and wanting at her. This is a rough one for me to review. Although I loved the faith arc, it was the writing and characters I had issues with.

If everything that could possibly go wrong didn’t, I might’ve liked it better.

If there were less melodramatic issues between the characters, I would’ve liked it better.

If there was more consideration and honesty, I would’ve liked it better.

If there were fewer assumptions, I would’ve liked it better

If the brothers fought less, I definitely would’ve liked it better.

The characters just bothered me. Just when I think I like them they say or assume something stupid which set somebody else off and then there’s ill feelings between the characters.

It just wasn’t comfortable for me.

Three things I liked were, that even though Allison Kent tended to assume the worst in people, she also asked questions for clarification at times which was refreshing.

And I really liked how the Graham family all knew the Lord, shared their faith, prayed and sought God in many events.

Another saving grace was Laura Graham, Levi’s mother. She was a lovely woman of God, even keeled and kind.

Maybe this was written long enough ago that the author has progressed in her writing abilities. Perhaps I’ll read something a little newer to reserve judgment.

I don’t mean to sound harsh since there’s so many people that really like this book, but it just wasn’t anywhere near a favorite for me.

Christian historical romance. I thought it was reasonably well written, and I liked the faith and salvation message. It seemed to me that the heroine was too innocent and spoiled. And while some details of how difficulties were overcome were included, others were not.

Book Strength: Bible Truth Strongly Conveyed - Book Weakness: Drama, Drama & Repeated Large Quantities of Angst [3.48]
This story centers on the female lead, Allison Kent. Her parent’s died when she was six-years-old; she grew up under the kind guidance of Mrs. Webster at the Webster School for Young Women outside of Chicago with school vacations spent at her Grandmother’s in Madison, Wisconsin. It seemed that her Grandmother loved her, but couldn’t or wouldn’t take on her daily care, so she really was all but an orphan. She spent her last year at the school teaching French. It appeared that Allison was indulged, possibly as a replacement for love and care, also Allison had a strong dose of naiveté.
The book opens with Allison about to leave the boarding school for her grandmother’s house. She is excited about the invitation her school friend Suzanne has offered to her, which was to join their family for a European trip lasting a few months. All she has to supply is traveling expenses, ticket funds, and spending money. Suzanne’s family will supply the rest.
She arrives home to find her Grandmother old, failing, and rarely able to leave her bedroom. Her Grandmother’s situation seems to give her little pause, as her only focus is pestering her Uncle to facilitate the trip. She seems to ignore or not connect her Uncles dissipation, lack of regular sleep or work habits, or civility. The day comes when they begin their trip to New York, but things go horribly wrong. It is at this point the backstory ends and the real story begins. Allison, the orphan; the advantaged, city gal meets real life, which for her is at first, loss of memory, home, possessions, and then later, her whole focus and world view. The fulcrum point, which seems an ending is really a beginning, Allison’s rescue in the backwoods of nowhere by Levi Graham starts her on a new trajectory.

What I Liked-
This book shined on the basics in regards to the genre of Christian fiction. Bible truth is strongly conveyed and not just once, but repeatedly and credible via Levi, Thelma, Mrs. Graham, Mr. Graham’s powerful testimony, and even James and his wife. Many books cannot come close to the focused testimony and faith lessons that this book serves up. The focus on a supportive family was refreshing and helped move the plot. Burgundy Gloves showed faith and practice that was integrated throughout the Graham family’s daily living, not just over meals or church.

What I Wasn’t a Fan Of-
My biggest frustrated was the drama-drama or over-the-top angst that happened again and again. I assumed this was to move the plot along, but for me, too much drama or angst works against the believability of the plot. It also worked against the growth of the relationship between Levi & Allison; of course, they had other relationship killers, such as poor communication skills! The last annoyance was the myriad of details proffered; many were left and never explained, resolved, or connected. The ending was so quick; we really needed to see this couple as functioning adult units.
Julia David is a talented writer, one with a strong Christian worldview. If that speaks to what you like to read in a book, then pick up Burgundy Gloves.

This is a jewel.

The characters are very well developed, and there is a lovely romance that develops nicely, too.

The story line has a good flow to it so that the pages keep turning. I like that kind of novel. The faith that runs through the story is just right, and a bit different coming from the male point of view. There was a bit of overkill on the angst part, and a bit of rehashing--but that goes with the kind of story this is dealing with amnesia. You'll have that.

There's a touch of humor that brings the story to life. Description is very light. You don't get a good feel for the dense woods, nor can you "smell" the wood smoke, nor do you "feel" just how cold the river water is. Some flowers noted are blooming in the wrong season... but, if you don't care about that stuff like I do, you'll get engrossed in the story and forget about it.

Worthy read, and worth the money.

IF you’re looking for a different take on a historical romance this is a perfect book for you.

For me Levi Graham is a wonderful hero, rough around the edges, clueless about women, and in need of a wife to take away the loneliness he doesn’t even know he’s feeling. I love how he’s sensitive, even in the midst of all his gruffness, and how he evolves into the husband Allison needs.

Allison Kent has no memory, no direction, and citified ways, yet I found her to be the perfect match for Levi. Torn between trying to figure out who she is in connection to Levi, and who she was, she grows into a strong woman and a great match for Levi.

I loved the strong sense of familial love In the Graham family, and the way the brothers played off of each other. Patch rounded out the family as a loyal canine with personality. I also loved the thread of faith that wove itself through the story.

Well worth the read, I recommend it.

One wouldn't know it was a historical Christian novel from its cover. Many Bible versus involving an entitled girl duped by a deceitful uncle who tosses her over a cliff in search of her travel money. A trapper and loner finds her, nursing her back to health. Now evolves a conflict between spoiled and non-religious vs. a minimalist and religious. Allison never knew true family while Levi had a demonstrative family with a deep faith. Many ups and down with good character development between complicated vs uncomplicated viewpoints, particularly from their conflicts and differences. Despite much descriptive analysis throughout, it ended very quickly without much explanation as to the reasoning behind it. A relatively sweet and clean book for those who favor a good Christian novel.

God knows what is best for us

Allison lost her parents at an early age and was sent to a boarding school. She then taught school for a while and came home to decide what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. Her best friend asked her to go with her family to Paris for the summer. Her uncle finally agreed to let her go, but he had no intention of taking her there. He rode the carriage into the woods and pushed her out causing her to hit her head on a rock. A man named Levi found her and nursed her to good health. Allison could only remember her name and was very afraid. Levi lived alone in the woods with no neighbors. You'll have to read to find out about all the ups and downs of their time together!

Interesting Story

I haven't read a story quite like this. I had mixed feelings about it. The basic plot was good and I liked the Graham brothers. The heroine had her moments. I read a few reviews before trying this book and am glad I actually took the time to read it. I did feel like the spiritual beliefs, the way the characters brought them out, was interesting and at the same time, possibly confusing to someone who wasn't raised with this religious belief. I did like how the characters grew throughout the story. The ending was an interesting twist, though. If you love inspirational, historical romance, guve this one a try.

An epic story

I have just discovered Julia David’s books. Her stories are wonderful. Each one is full of humor, drama, danger, healing and God’s redemptive love. The only problem I have found with them is that I can’t stop reading them. There are just no good stopping places in them. This particular story kept me guessing right up to the end of the story. I’m not going to give a blow by blow account of the characters or the story. I’ll leave that to other reviewers. I’m just going to say don’t start reading her books too late in the day or you will be staying up way past your bedtime to finish her stories, just like me!

This story is such a wonderful read. The romance is spot on and gave me all the warm and fuzzies. The Christian focus was done well enough for me. It wasn’t overly preachy and managed to offer a gentle exploration of faith. I particularly liked how the author tackled aspects of grief.

The only thing that felt slightly off was the use of very modern colloquialisms that jarred with the historical setting. Otherwise, it was a wonderful read and a fun amnesia romance on top of everything else. Beautiful all round and made me cry several times.

One of the best

What a shame I cannot give Burgundy Gloves more than 5 stars! Such a wonderful book that kept me riveted from beginning to end. God used a rich spoiled girl, Allyson, to warm the heart of serious-thinking Levi. Levi's family was so loving and faithful to God. Beautiful witness to Allyson as she opens up to ask God into her heart. Loved this book and all it represents.

Pleasantly Impressed

This story had everything I love in quality inspirational historical fiction. I loved the way the author put me in a real place and gave me the gritty and the wonderful. I wasn't expecting the level of writing and storytelling since I'd never heard of this author and I got the book free. It's one I will recommend and probably read again.

Interesting Midwestern historical fiction and romance. The life of a young woman, who is orphaned and raised by uncaring relatives. The twist and turn plot has the reader experiencing violent Lake Michigan storms and being young, alone at the mercy of others. Well crafted and researched.

This is a good book, it has action, a love story and good times and bad times and that's what makes it a 5 star book. Wh;en Levi Graham(woodsman) finds and rescues Allison Kent, their lives are not only forever changed but now linked together. It has a good feeling ending and shows how faith in God was not only common back then but essential for people to make it thru bad times.

Julia David spins a captivating tale of true love blossoming from adversity. Allison, a young woman seeking adventure, finds herself in a place where she must rely on the hospitality of a man she has never met after losing her memory. Levi, the young man who rescues her, must deal with the fact that his once-quiet life will never be the same now that she has come into it. Although the situations seem a bit outrageous, David makes the story so mesmerizing that the reader easily suspends reality in order to discover the pair's fate.

I'm a stickler for good character development, and this is a point where David excels. While most of the story is narrated from Allison's perspective, there are instances where other characters take over. Through these flawlessly executed transitions, we learn not only the actions of several characters, but also their thoughts and intentions. There is no question that the characters mature and develop over the course of the story in deep, meaningful ways. For example, when Levi is first introduced he is shown to be tentative, kind, and prideful. He acts out when he does not get his way and is entirely used to living on his own with no one to hold him accountable. However, as we see him interact with his acquaintances and hear his prayers, we watch him grow. By the end of the book he is less impulsive, a characteristic which is not stressed upfront but is apparent when paying attention to his actions and thought processes.

An important aspect of this story is the faith Levi's family holds. In the 1880's there were no commentaries, theology podcasts, or online forums where people could discuss their beliefs or find answers to difficult questions. People simply read the Bible for themselves, and let its words impact their lives. The theme of faith runs through the background of Burgundy Gloves; it is not an obvious plot device, but adds depth and reality to the setting and to the point the author is making with the story as a whole. It is refreshing to read a story which incorporates Christianity in a historically accurate and not overwhelming manner.
