2020 Read #103

The more Ten acts like “a regular girl,” the less I enjoy this series. It is especially annoying that she starts going into overload with beauty tips and tricks from her friends, and I’m thinking, “Okay, the guy liked you before when you had none of this stuff, so why do you feel the need to do all this now?” I don’t know, it just rubbed me the wrong way...

Updated Review 5/14/25: SQUEALING!!! Wonderful wonderful volume!

I never knew some people had an issue with Ten's actions of wanting to make herself prettier until a few months ago, but I always found it relatable and realistic for me personally. I got where she was coming from, as it made me think of teenage me who wanted to look cuter for the guy I liked.

However, one thing that I realized in this volume is that Ten has always been encouraged to be herself. If she doesn't know how to act, what to say, or is unsure, there is always a friend telling her not to worry. That the best thing she could be is herself in any given situation. I found that really touching and encouraging to see how she had friends like that!

The romance is SOOOOOO good and I can't wait to read the next volume!

Original Review 6/18/22: Be still my heart, I LOVE THIS VOLUME!

Thank you Suu Morishita because this is EXACTLY what I've been looking forward to seeing/reading!

This honestly has to be in the top three/five of most wholesome shojo manga I've read! AND THE FEELS!!! It is such a beautiful blooming love story and once again, find Ten to be extremely relatable! I loved the chapters with her best friend because no, we don't have to lose weight or wear makeup for someone to like us, but it does tend to be a natural go-to in trying to get our crush to like us! LOL! (Her friend's comments were SO on point! LOL!) Though with that said, I love the takeaway that Ten speaks after she feels she has finally "made it" to the point where she wanted to be.

And RIKUUUUUU! He is SO precious and LOVED Chiaki's honesty with him!! Very good scene and loved another one that involves him speaking up on the behalf of Ten and Riku!

Can't wait to read the next volume! I know it will continue to only get better and better!

Also that bonus story surprised me! Never would have expected a certain someone to be popular with girls! LOL!

This one was happy which I assume means the next one will be drama, I don't want it.

Starting to realize that I think the reason I like Chiaki so much is because he reminds me a lot of Mafuyu from Given. Now that he's shown so much of his personality he's just this cutie. He's not the aloof pretentious booknerd airhead I thought he was going to be. Idk I'm kind of conflicted with how this story is moving. IDK how too feeeeel.

Side note: I really like that the character's hairstyles change? Like Ten changes up her hair a lot and even Riku does too. I really like the art.

That was anticlimactic and very bland. Hopefully they stop blushing and start acting like a couple 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s hard to be terribly objective about this book because I still think Riku sucks and Ten’s approach to dating is a little... uh... regressive. Chiaki continues to be the victim of the rawest deal in the story.

You can tell this is a work of fiction because the house mother actually believes for five seconds that having two people under the same roof dating won’t cause an endless litany of potential problems.

This volume was actually really disappointing :(

Ten admits her feelings for feelings for Riku, then asks for some time so that she can win him over..? But an ongoing plot was that Riku already confessed to Ten and still likes her? I suppose it's definitely within the bounds of believability that she assumes he doesn't like her anymore, considering she turned him down (and she's also kinda clueless sometimes), but it was still kinda weird. I have mixed feelings about her whole approach to 'making him like her', as well. She gets make-up advice and talks about the mimicking technique with her friends and it just felt... really disingenuine and very much not-Ten.

Also, Chiaki. I'm really pissed that everyone is utterly dismissing Chiaki... It doesn't bother me that Ten didn't respond to his feelings, I get that just fine, but all Chiaki wants is friends. Then Riku gives the slap of never considering them friends, and Ten has ZERO interaction with him for this entire volume, even though they started out as good friends. Ten was one of the first people to really make an effor to understand him beyond him having a pretty face. And now.. what, he doesn't exist anymore because he isn't the boy you like? Chiaki isn't even being a tool about the unrequited feelings. He genuinely just wants his friends to be happy.

So.. eh. I'm disappointed in how this volume went. I'll still follow it for at least another volume or so to see if it redeems itself, but I don't like this direction.

(Also, there were quite a few typos in this volume! It's been a while since I've seen typos ~ especially in something that's a bit of a mainstream series.)

Hm... Somehow, I thought the confession between Ten and Riku was a bit... anticlimactic?

I don't know...

Maybe I'm getting too old for this sort of romance, or maybe I waited too long between the last volume and this one, but I just wanted them to just get together without the unnecessary extra drama that took place.

the cuteness!!! \(//∇//)\ so much blushing!!!!! I am liking Ten and Riku together a lot. didn’t really understand why Riku had to wait to confess his feelings back to her (also I mean, come on girl, he obviously has not stopped liking you).

hoping we get Riku opening up more to Ten in the next volume…he’s obviously got some family stuff he needs to unload. also, please let Chiaki find someone!! he’s such a pure fluffy puppy dog. definitely gives me Mafuyu (from Given) vibes.

I understand why this volume has rubbed some people the wrong way, since Ten does things to look ‘prettier’ like learns makeup, starts working out, watches what she eats for her skincare, etc…while I don’t think that you need to do that for a guy - or anyone! - I also remember being in high school/college and how doing things like that helped boost my self-confidence. some girls like makeup and exercise and whatever else…some don’t…either is fine as long as you’re not forcing what you like on other people. and the scenes with her girlfriends as she learns are pretty cute!

i liked the fact that both riku and ten confessed both times at the same places, the back of the bus and the shrine.

i didn’t like how all the process that ten followed for bettering herself consisted on beauty things, such as learning how to put makeup on or losing weight. it felt unnecessary… she could have tried to “win him over” in another way, also considering that he already confessed his feelings to her and she could have assumed that he still had some kind of feelings for her, i don’t understand the need to make him wait more time for her confession…

chiaki’s character is actually nice. i hope riku could just start considering him his friend since chiaki has been repeating that he wants to be his friend and trying to be a good friend since the initial chapters.

Riku and Ten are officially dating now and have informed the head of the house, Ran.

I need more development. I know that in one or more of the later volumes, we get more development in Riku and Rei's backstory. I kind of wish it were a little sooner.

I love the art, but there's a lot of art but not enough text or depth to the characters.

On a personal note: I think I might be outgrowing some of the shoujo genre. I want more story than just beautiful artwork.

I'm still going to continue. I'm so far into the series that I don't really want to stop.

this is cute but i’m seriously starting to get confused. she admit to him that she likes him and he likes her and i don’t understand the whole situation where they weren’t dating after admitting they like each other. but whatever now we’re past that somehow (idk what happened) but now they’re dating and idk i’m still confused but maybe it’s cuz i was tired and then read this and i can’t remember much of it.

DNF because it contained a trope that I absolutely cannot stand in romance books: Where the female character changes things about herself (losing weight, wearing make up, etc.) just to get a guy to like her. That is not how relationships should not begin and I hate how authors still use it. This series had so much potential but was ruined by this stupid trope.

This was my least favorite volume so far. It was a little confusing in the beginning. Ten changes herself - wants to be pretty- to get Riku to like her - and the advice - don’t eat snacks, keep eating meat, sit ups was superficial stuff. The message of you can’t make someone like you just by trying to be pretty was weak.

And Chiaki was being a weird creeper.

One question that kept popping up in my mind while reading this volume was 'WHAT'? because it felt like the story is making some illogical decisions. So, at the end of the last volume, Riku straight up asked Ten if she liked him, and now, here, she immediately admits yes, but then she says she wants him to wait so that she can ask him properly? And then this girl goes off, thinking she needs to make it up to him for rejecting him earlier??? And then she starts a beauty regime, takes makeup tips from her friend, gets fit with exercise etc, so that she can ask after she feels she 'made an effort??? Girl, what are you doing? He asked you out when you were as you were! Like, this was so weird that it even felt out of Ten's characterization so far?! It takes them about a 100 pages just to finally start dating!

Meanwhile, Chiaki feels he has to apologize to Riku for kissing Ten and confessing to her, like what? Then, he supports them, while encouraging Ten to go for Riku, which is like, totally him. Also I loved his interactions with Riku this tim, too, (Riku, just admit it - he is your friend!) because he is so cute and kind, and he barely even shows his heartbreak. Only he and the artwork are somewhat saving this volume at this point!

I really didn't like the"I'm going to change myself for him" that Ten or herself through. Based on the previous volumes it didn't really seem like what she would do. I don't know, I think I might not continue the series.

This is getting very frustrating. Watching Ten fumble around when she was initially so straightforward was infuriating and so SLOW. Also did not like that she felt the need to lose weight and change her appearance to feel "worthy" of him???

Oooh, I dunno what to think anymore. I dislike the reasoning behind Ten's thought process for making Riku wait for her before they properly date.
