Criminal investigator Larry Macklin is enjoying a relaxing family vacation on the Florida coast… until a body washes up next door and all hell breaks loose. It’s soon apparent that the island’s hapless police chief is not up to the task of finding a murderer.

As more bodies are discovered, Larry and his father are drawn into the investigation against their will and far out of their jurisdiction. The situation is not improved by the arrival of the local sheriff, Will Duncan, a harsh man who resents the Macklins involvement.

Larry soon finds himself juggling both the murder investigations and his father’s increasingly tense relationship with the rival sheriff. When Duncan charges an innocent man with one of the murders, Larry knows he’s running out of time. Will he be able to find the real killer before his father is arrested for obstruction of justice… or worse?

Criminal Investigator Larry Macklin along with his Sheriff father and their girl friends are taking a well-deserved vacation on a Florida beach. After their last case, they all need a break. And wouldn't you know, a body washes up right next door to where they are staying.

Although out of his jurisdiction, Larry senses that the local police chief is not exactly knowledgeable or experienced in finding a murderer. And the local sheriff just wants it all gone ... especially the Macklins.

And this is not the only body they will come across during their investigation. There's a hanging which may be suicide or murder. But what is the connection between victims? Add to that a shooting, accident or intentional?

Larry is under a time restraint to help solve these crimes ... but with everyone avoiding the police, telling lies, or only partial truths, Larry begins to wonder if this is one case that will definitely go cold.

I have had the opportunity to read this entire series from the very beginning. It's been an adventure watching Larry develop into the character he is today. He has matured, decided what he wants to be when he grows up, and is building a better relationship with his father. He's a solid character, with dad being a thisclose secondary character. I am so in love with Mauser ....

As all the series, this is a well-written crime thriller. Lots of suspects, with a few surprising twists and turns. I really look forward to see what July brings.

Many thanks to the author who has given me the opportunity to read and review this terrific book ... and the series.

This is the 8th book that I've read in this series and it didn't disappoint. A.E. Howe has created likable and interesting characters that are always wrapped in a fast paced murder mystery. Like the others, June's Troubles was a light and fun read. This series is based on a small, rural county in north Florida that is true to local landmarks and history. I enjoyed this book and will be reading #9.

This was a very nice book. It kept my interest throughout. It takes place on a luxury island where nothing ever happens, that is nothing bad, until now...

A body washed up to a pier on this private island called Pelican Island. One of the residents finds the body and starts screaming. Her husband rushes out to see what's happened, at the same time the vacationing sheriff and his daughter come out of their house.

The sheriff on this island thinks he's a real bass ass, but he is just a mean, foul mouthed sort of man.

He was determined to get the perp of this man who had washed up, by hook or by crook. He chose a young man of diminished capacity to pin the murder on.

In the interim several strange deaths occur.

The sheriff who wrongly arrested the young man was found out and was outed.

The other man involved in this chaos was blackmailing many people on island. Eventually he was exposed for what he was and eventually just disappeared.

Warning, this book is dangerous to folks with budgets!

BLAST!  I'm trying to live on a fixed income and really, really struggling with this "Impossible Dream" and here comes A. E. Howe, who strikes me as another Michael Lister.  (For those who don't know, he's an evil genuis who is scheming ways to make me funell all of my money into Amazon to sate my addiction to his books.)

Danger, Will Robinson!

Do everything you can to resist reading this book!

Oh, here's some invaluable help: I found a serious error – could be a typo, not sure, but it should be enough for you to get away from this book.  On page 128:
"… I want dig into their backgrounds a little deeper,"

See it?  Probably missing 'to', but maybe 'I want someone to… '  That should be enough to steer you away.  Don't bother thanking me, just pay it forward.

While this is as well written and fast paced as the others in the series that I've read, for some reason I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I have the others. I'm not sure if its because it was based elsewhere so there wasn't as much of Pete and Larry's other friends or because I found the level of the Macklin's involvement a little unbelievable given that they were outside their jurisdiction, I'm not sure. This time Larry and his dad find themselves in the middle of a turf war between two different officers and the accusation and charging of an innocent man as well as an increasing number of bodies and potentially paranoid delusions (or are they?) so their holiday plans quickly go out of the window. There are a couple of good twists and turns to keep you guessing including a few you just don't see coming.

A really great series of mystery books.

I have read all of the Larry Macklin Mysteries books to date. Have enjoyed each and every one of them. I will be on lookout for the continuation of these works. Just hoping that they will not hit the market during the upcoming Tax season; at I cannot control my urges to read them at all costs. I have been very late for many appointments since starting them lately. My taxes MUST take the priority role until the Spring of 2018. C U Then

An AEH. Mystery Novel (LMMB - 8)/A one and a two and a three murders

AEH. has. penned the eighth novel in the (LMMB-9) series, which begins with an off the Florida coast on an island with a small time Sheriff who knows everything that is good and over looks anything bad to avoid trouble. When the bodies begin to show up then their is very little action from the local Sheriff and then the Sheriff and Deputy decide th intervein. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS.

It's probably best to keep your nose out of other's business, but some people can't help themselves. In this case, a sheriff and his son help out in another county while on vacation. Think girlfriends, hidden cameras, bad developers, suicide, murder, illegal aliens, and a really big dog. No more hints. Sit back and start reading.

I have enjoyed everyone of Howe's books but this might be my favorite. There is more depth here in the characters and Larry's relationship with his father seems to take a very positive turn. The murder itself is full of twists and turns which always makes the story better. The compassion shown for the marginal is inspiring and the loathing for ego manics real. Great read!

I am going to look for the earlier books in this series.

Well drawn characters in an uncommon surrounding. The pacing was very good and the details were appropriate to the scene. I enjoyed this police procedural enough to look for the earlier entries in the series to learn the major characters back stories.

Fish out of water LEOs outside their jurisdiction

A vacation-cum-Murder investigation has two off-duty sheriffs from another jurisdiction assisting a small-town police chief when a newly-dead body surfaces in the local marina. Filled with battling personalities and Florida oddities.

8 books in series now read. Compelling story and characters with a weird pet thing ongoing in the main characters... just odd. The stories are believable and the dramatic association is great with multiple characters involved in the series.

Nice easy reading with out to much super star stuff and killing the entire world... refreshingly down to earth.
Thank you

Not much of a vacation

The Macklins go to the beach for a little R & R. Of course, a body shows up! Of course, there's another! Of course, both Macklins get involved! Of course, they step on toes! Everyone has a secret. I did get a little frustrated that certain details were not included in the ending.

Great!

Readers should start with book one of the Larry Marlin series, and watch the characters grow and the enter action. Well reading to me is like watching a movie or tv series to me. Great stories about police and different crimes.

Enjoyable Read

I have read all of his mysteries so far and enjoyed each one. They are light and entertaining. I find I can unwind with the characters who appear in each book repeatedly. Not how to bring world peace. But these books bring peace and contentment to my afternoons.

Well done.

This is a well written story. There is not a lot of action, and that was what I was looking for, but the development of the characters was very well done. The ending was a twist that I did not see coming.

Great series!

Great series with well developed characters that become your friends (or enemies) quick!y! Story plots move am my at a fast pace with enough surprises to keep them from being a "just another mystery". The stories are fast paced, humorous and believable.

Intriguing mystery

Lots of interesting characters, good suspense with obscure plot. Larry does it again and it isn’t even in his town. His dad is in on solving the mystery and they seem to work well together. I liked it well enough to look for more books by this author.

I DO AGREE ALL MEAT SHOULD BE COOKED. A PRETTY DECENT CRIME MYSTERY ABOUT TWO VACATIONING LAWMEN WHICH TURNS INTO A WORKING VACATION. A LITTLE SLOW AND OVERLY DESCRIPTIVE BUT A VERY GOOD WHO-DONE-IT. I DID THINK WTF THE HOLES WERE SO OBVIOUS. GEEZ! ;C

Troubles, again.

May be worth more, at least 4.5 Stars, but being conservative, I will stay there. Good story, believable characters, logical story line. Macklin keeps things moving and pens an interesting read. I will move on to his next offering and see how the year progresses.

Nice story of Jerome, very touching.

over the top

I like how this author develops characters. Now he just needs to develop a believable storyline. For such a small geographic area, they surely have way too many murders.

Lots of action

These are the kind of heros/law enforcement that we all want on the job...and Mouser too. Plenty of drama and danger to make this a read all at once.
