Holly Lisle has been writing fiction professionally since 1991, when she sold FIRE IN THE MIST, the novel that won her the Compton Crook Award for best first novel. She has to date published more than thirty novels and several comprehensive writing courses. She has just published WARPAINT, the second stand-alone novel in her Cadence Drake series.
Holly had an ideal childhood for a writer…which is to say, it was filled with foreign countries and exotic terrains, alien cultures, new languages, the occasional earthquake, flood, or civil war, and one story about a bear, which follows:
“So. Back when I was ten years old, my father and I had finished hunting ducks for our dinner and were walking across the tundra in Alaska toward the spot on the river where we’d tied our boat. We had a couple miles to go by boat to get back to the Moravian Children’s Home, where we lived.
“My father was carrying the big bag of decoys and the shotgun; I was carrying the small bag of ducks.
“It was getting dark, we could hear the thud, thud, thud of the generator across the tundra, and suddenly he stopped, pointed down to a pie-pan sized indentation in the tundra that was rapidly filling with water, and said, in a calm and steady voice, “That’s a bear footprint. From the size of it, it’s a grizzly. The fact that the track is filling with water right now means the bear’s still around.”
“Which got my attention, but not as much as what he said next.
” ‘I don’t have the gun with me that will kill a bear,’ he told me. ‘I just have the one that will make him angry. So if we see the bear, I’m going to shoot him so he’ll attack me. I want you to run to the river, follow it to the boat, get the boat back home, and tell everyone what happened.’
“The rest of our walk was very quiet. He was, I’m sure, listening for the bear. I was doing my damnedest to make sure that I remembered where the boat was, how to get to it, how to start the pull-cord engine, and how to drive it back home, because I did not want to let him down.
“We were not eaten by a bear that night…but neither is that walk back from our hunt for supper a part of my life I’ll ever forget.
“I keep that story in mind as I write. If what I’m putting on paper isn’t at least as memorable as having a grizzly stalking my father and me across the tundra while I was carrying a bag of delicious-smelling ducks, it doesn’t make my cut.”

I'm sure I'm probably not the exact target audience for this book but I more or less inherited it and thought I would give it a try. And, actually, I was pleasantly surprised. I had never read anything by this author and assumed it would be a romance disguised as a thriller novel. And, yeah, it is that but there was quite a bit more thriller than romance here. It's not heavy reading but one needs a quick lighter read now and again and this one involves a stalker which always has good thriller-type possibilities. The characters were nicely developed, with the point-of-view shifting between the two main protagonists, both of which were strong, independent people. The romance was very plausible and the mystery of the stalker was good even though I figured it out pretty early. I also like the main character, Dia, being a paramedic and thought the author described life as a paramedic very accurately without burying the reader in technical trivia.
This book is not a romance in my definition of them particularly, but a great story. I had many of the pieces to the mystery (some even the characters didn’t catch though that was plausible), but didn’t have the answer. I don’t know if it’s because my ability to pick up all the clues is failing, or because all the pieces aren’t present to help people like me get the answer before everyone else. Though I can usually see the answer, it didn’t bug me that I couldn’t. The story is enjoyable without the answer, in part because there’s more to it than just the mystery, though the fact that Dia’s life is on the line is a primary concern.
I can’t explain why I would say it isn’t a romance without spoilers, but let’s just say things happen that I can’t get my head around in a romance. However, I do have to say that the label on the spine is Onyx Novel, not Onyx Romance, Romantic Suspense, or whatever. Even the back blurb focuses more on the terror than the couple, another clue. That said, there is a love story buried in amongst the thriller plot for our enjoyment. And the romance sub-thread has one of the most amusing lines in it for me. If you’ve been reading along here, you’ll already know how I detest the trend toward excitement-based relationships as opposed to those that the characters have to work at. Well, Dia thinks, “She would be able to see if it was him she was in love with, and not just the fact that he was keeping her safe from a nut who was trying to kill her.” Yep. That’s exactly my problem with romantic suspense. That the character sees the same issue is just precious .
Anyway, I read this book because I know Holly’s writing and enjoy how she creates characters and makes them come to life on the page. Considering how quickly I devoured i see you in my spare moments, many of which were stolen when I had other, “better,” things to do, I’d have to say she succeeded . Oh, and this is the first book ever I’ve had that came from a supermarket. My husband bought it for me at the local Smiths.

Holly Lisle's latest paranormal romantic suspense novel wasn't quite as substantial as her previous two attempts, Midnight Rain and Last Girl Dancing; in fact, it was a fluffy enough read that I easily whipped through it in a day. It was much the same mold as the previous two, and in fact was a sequel to Midnight Rain, since it had one character in common. But while Midnight Rain was an enjoyable read and took a bit of time to introduce you to the characters and let you get to know them before the chemistry between hero and heroine kicked in, this time around our protagonists have barely enough time to introduce themselves to one another before they're ripping each other's clothes off. And that threw the book off for me a noticeable amount. I mean, I'm all for healthy indulgence of one's hormones in a paranormal romantic suspense novel, but here it seemed unreal and forced.
That said, I will also give this book props for a heroine who isn't an idiot, and who in fact refreshingly does not balk at the hero cop guy informing her that since she's being stalked, she must take certain security measures. In many other novels, at this point the heroine would have pitched a fit. In this book, the heroine says "OKAY THEN", and not only takes those measures, she gets friends to help her out, too. So good on Lisle for that.
But she's done better. Here's hoping this one was just an off-day for her, or something. Two stars.
"I See You" was a pretty good romantic suspense. After reading and liking her last book ("Last Girl Dancing") I wanted to read more of her stuff.
Lisle has a definite knack for creating nice, twisty plots - that though based on a typical concept - are anything but typical. She adds her own twists to things to keep the book interesting. The book had a nicely thought out plot that kept you into the story, and she keeps you guessing on who the bad guy is, though I had a pretty good idea. Plot-wise, I think my one complaint would be that I thought Dia and Brig should have been a bit more suspicious and wary of the people closest to Dia. They looked that way, but a little too casually, in my opinion.
Romance-wise, the book was pretty good. I liked both Dia and Brig and they had a fairly nice romance. I won't say it was anything absolutely wonderful, but I liked them together and I think Lisle did a good job with them. I thought the ending of the book short-changed them, though. It was just way too abrupt. It was like...rescue the girl, kill the bad guy, I love you, the end. I wanted a little space between the conclusion of the plot and the end of the book.
Overall, good book. I enjoyed reading it.

Florida cop Brig Hafferty is investigating a series of bomb related traffic accidents when he stumbles upon paramedic Dia Courvant. He is instantly smitten and vows to follow up with her regarding this accident. When Dia calls him about a stalker, Brig responds immediately and basically moves in until the stalker is caught. Of course, this doesn't faze the stalker and nasty incidents still occur. The trick is figuring out who he is and how he is doing what he's doing. When the final curtain is ripped away and the stalker is revealed, it is definitely not who you'd expect.
This is a great mystery. Whenever I thought I'd figured it out, the author offered up another clue which threw the investigation in a different direction. Great use of misdirection and false clues. This is a book that truly keeps you on the edge of your seat. The danger level alone is enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Not to mention the ghost.....
I was a little disappointed when I saw on the inside cover that this was classified as "romantic suspense" because I love suspense but am not crazy about romance novels. But I decided to soldier on and read it anyway.
WOW, am I glad I did! There was some romance (actually, just some "hot" {hotness is in the eye of the reader...} sex scenes) and it was a little hokey, but it didn't detract too much from the overall story. The mystery part of the story kept me guessing all the way to the end. I had part of the solution, but was pleasantly surprised by the part that I couldn't guess.
This book is a quick and easy read and, if you're like me, once you get started you will have to keep going until you reach the last page!
The mystery and suspense element of the book is very strong. Her characters are superbly developed and real. There was nothing wrong with the story in general, and the author did a good job of making this a 'who done it' with so many characters involved. I liked that Brig and Dia are everyday characters like you and me. At which I think inhanced the story, Brig couldn't save Dia from every situation of this story. There is a parnormal element to the story, but not over the top. But I don't want to give away the plot.
Dia is an EMT and Brig an investigater, who meet on an vehicle accident and become love interest. They both are work-a-holics. When there two jobs and personal lives start to intertwine, they question who they can and can't trust.
There is something about the way Ms. Lisle writes where her romantic suspense ones are more creepy thriller ones. It's the psycho stalker which makes a woman keep on her lights on at night, a baseball bat by the bed and a gun under her pillow. (Who doesn't sleep with a weapon near by?)
Still, this was a good one which I enjoyed. Fast read which had me turning the pages until I finished in one sitting.
Great romance-thriller with juicy erotic parts that weren't overdone at all. There's a small tie-in with Midnight Rain in the Detective character, but otherwise, this stands alone. Enjoyable and short enough to be a quick read.
This book was interesting. The story was intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages. The villain was not who I thought it was, making it fun to try to figure out.
I had to spend some time at the auto shop this weekend and grabbed this off my bookshelf to reread. I enjoyed this pretty suspenseful story of an EMT who suddenly finds herself the target of a stalker--4 years after her husband and fellow EMT is killed in a car accident. Intertwined with her personal safety issue is a larger mystery of a killer who is mass murdering people by causing auto accidents. The author does a good job of holding the suspense, as you don't really know "who done it" until the final few pages.
This was a one-sitting read for me. It is about a woman who works as a paramedic who becomes the focus of an unbalanced man. The ambulance scenes are engaging. The main character, Dia, meets a cop who becomes involved in her security. This is not what you would call "literary" fiction by any means. However, if you enjoy a fast paced thriller, peppered with the paranormal and a little spicy sex thrown in, you may enjoy this book, as I did.
Paramedic Dia Courvant rescues the sole survivor of a horrible traffic accident only to find her husband dead in the wreckage. Now, police suspect that someone is staging freeway accidents and the same man could be stalking her. As she dreams about the encounters, she wonders if her husband could be protecting her from beyond the grave.
Exciting and suspenseful. Makes a great beach read. Highly recommend.
I'm not terribly good at reading thrillers; I keep suddenly standing up and wanting to walk away. Of course, then I have to come back and keep reading. This was pretty good and I liked the heroine who seemed very down to earth and grounded, dealing well with all that was happening around and to her. The only bit I felt was quite over the top was the slightly paranormal twinge...and the end felt a bit rushed somehow. Enjoyed it nonetheless.
this is the first one of her books that I have read and I enjoyed it. it was light an quick read. Not a intellectual book but this type of book is not meant to make you think. I guessed how he was getting by them though was surprisd at who the criminal was.
there was a supernatural element but only heard bout near end and was a sidebar
Another brilliant book by Lisle.. she kinda disappoint me at first cos she revealed the killer's name earlier.. but she kept me in suspense cos no one knows who is this killer of hers... and all the time i was wondering who can it be.. i think it's a good ending. i like it!
Finished the book and liked it enough to look for other books by this author. The storyline and ending were somewhat typical but it was interesting enough I was up reading past my bedtime. Recommended for a light fast read.
I See You was a light mystery with an interesting story, but it was almost too light for me, so I was completely thrown when a character was killed. It was pretty predictable as far as mysteries go, and the romance was hardly explored. As well written as it was, it just wasn't enough of a story.
Shameless, guilty pleasure, whatever. My mother-in-law gives me these kind of books, and it is good to pass a few hours especially being snowed and iced in.
