A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERRoma Downey—best known as the beloved angel on the TV show Touched by an Angel—“has created a beautiful and personal testimony to the presence of God in our lives and our world” (Most Reverend José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles).Ever since she was a little girl, Roma has seen butterflies as a reminder of God’s presence. They have appeared to her in moments when she needed encouragement, reminding her that she is not alone. In this deeply personal book, Roma shares stories from her life, alongside quotes, poems, scripture, and artwork that she prays will uplift you as they have her.Reminiscent of the message of her popular television series, Touched by an Angel, this book’s central theme is that there is a God, He loves you, and that even in your most difficult moments, He is by your side. The subtle butterfly theme reminds us that the wonder of God’s love and kindness is sometimes reflected in the gentle whispers of His creation and that we all have the power to transform from simple caterpillars into exquisite butterflies. This inspirational book invites you to return to its pages again and again, as life brings new challenges, or you find yourself in need of new inspiration. Box of Butterflies “will touch you and move you and strengthen you” (Kathie Lee Gifford).

This book was more than I expected in more ways than I can count. From the exterior cover to the content inside, everything was beautiful. The writing, the included illustrations, the inspirational quotations, and the examples the author used to help instill a point. Everything was just stunning and inspiring.
This is one of those books that while reading (and especially after I finished), I wanted to gift to everyone. This is a book that I want everyone to have. Whether you are in a period of light or a period of darkness, I want this book to be accessible to everyone. Even though there will be many people that may not agree with the content, I do know there will be some people who really need to read these words. I know there are people struggling and I truly really want those people to have this book.
The author had many ways of how she would go over each topic. First, she used personal examples which were meaningful and had a depth to show that she had gone through rough times in her childhood and has persevered since then. She also had inspirational quotations by widely known people, laced through the writing in the sidelines and they often had the same focus towards the topic the author was writing about. There was also lines of scripture and absolutely beautiful photos that were included. This is a book that would make not only a perfect gift because of the inspirational content but it's so physically beautiful as well.
My first read of this book was a loan from the library. Now, I have ordered my own copy because I knew I needed this for my own collection. I know this will be a book that I will continue to reread and look back on throughout the years and I know I will be gifting this book to many in the future.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book. Box of Butterflies by Roma Downey is a wonderful new book and it is BEAUTIFUL! Roma is inspired by butterflies and sometimes the sighting of a butterfly may possibly signal a special blessing for her.
The presentation of the graphics, the poems, the song lyrics, and Roma Downey’s stories from her life are heartwarming. I will be purchasing several of this inspirational book for my sisters. I loved the stories she shared from her own life and the stories of her friendships with Della Reese and Maya Angelou. Each page is so thoughtfully composed with imagery and beautiful words. The experiences Roma shares with her readers regarding the many times she has reached out in prayer for guidance from God is very encouraging. One example of Roma visiting a hospital during Christmas holidays and seeing a family in grief, left me with sweet chills. If you are a person of faith, I urge you to share a gift of this sweetly written book with someone who may need a touch of love.
I was lucky enough to be included on the Launch Team for Ms. Roma Downey's book, Box of Butterflies, due for release March of 2018 and grateful for the experience. I'd like to thank Roma, Daniel and the entire team for this opportunity. ***** Ms. Downey's vision, spirituality, Faith and love of the butterfly run deep through the pages of this book, however, not so deep that someone not having the same feelings and/or beliefs could not relate to, understand or feel they couldn't benefit from. Roma's faith in life, love and her relationships intertwine like a thread, embracing every word on every page, whether describing a time in her life where sadness and tragedy grabbed ahold or happiness and joy stood strong.
Roma's tribute to her relationship with Ms. Della Reese is nothing short of inspiring, emotional and a true testament of the love they shared for one another, together in friendship.
A quote, one of many used thoughout the book, by Erma Bombeck, "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I could not have a single bit of talent left and could say I used everything you gave me" I feel this particularly stood out and resonated deeply by how and where it was used within Roma's story.
The illustrations used within the pages add a realm of calmness and serenity to the story and reader, not distracting from it. They are very well executed as a "soft offering" to the pages of text and appealing to the eye.
I feel Roma's personal words, "Real beauty is of the heart; it's the glow that lights your face when you are doing something kind, it's the tears you cry in appreciation of someone else's pain". "Real beauty is kindness, gratitude, love"..... will have a genuine effect on the reader, as it did me. Roma's book is full of these inspiring anecdotes that she not only shares unselfishly with the reader but ones that will also keep you interested and emotionally invested.
She has delivered a story of life, her life, to include scripture, poems, and quotes which are sure to inspire. It is a book that is as beautiful visually as it is emotionally..... and she has managed to bless us with her encouragement and enthusiasm to keep moving forward within our own lives.

Roma Downey truly believes that when she sees a butterfly it is a special blessing or a reminder that someone she loved, who is no longer with her physically, is still with her in spirit. For me, the same is true of cardinals and others may have a different symbol that comes to them when they need it, but regardless of what it is, the idea of God's love and the love of others is the same.
Roma's faith is strong and every time she sees a butterfly, it strengthens it just a little more. This book is made up of poems, scriptures, song lyrics as well as stories from Roma Downey's personal life and from her well-known television series "Touched By an Angel." The graphics throughout and imagery of butterflies on most pages add to the spiritual quality of the book. The special relationship she shared with Della Reese and her friendship with Maya Angelou showed how special and inspirational both of those women were to her. The experiences Roma shares with her readers regarding the many times she has reached out in prayer for guidance from God is very encouraging. One example of Roma meeting a young woman with scars on both her wrists and her story of how the words from the television show saved her brought both tears and chills. I recommend this book to anyone exploring their faith, struggling with their faith, or strong believers as this book will inspire and motivate you to love yourself, love others and love your God. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
A beautiful book that was a lovely gift to send someone who was having a challenge in life. Heartfelt quotes sprinkled thru out the book. Beautiful presentation . A book that could be a reference for someone who wanted to send encouraging words, too. The book is written with the gentle faith that a friend might share over a cup of tea .
Can Roma Downey, forever loved for her hit series "Touched by An Angel" and a leader in the faith-based television and film industry, also have the midas touch in the literary world? Is her new book, "Box of Butterflies: Discovering the Unexpected Blessings All Around Us", worth opening?
If it has Roma Downey’s name on it, one has come to expect quality. I am happy to report that this autobiography even exceeded my own high expectations, and I give it the five stars it deserves. It is due to be released on March 6, and throughout my read I kept thinking to myself what great timing it is for such a transformational book to go out into a world that is full of so much pain and need.
"Box of Butterflies" is Roma’s testament to faith as tied into her personal journey through life. The title refers to a joyous gift Roma received from her husband, Mark Burnett, who knew how special the butterfly is to Roma and what it has come mean to her over the years. The butterfly is the perfect constant metaphor that mirrors Roma’s own life of highs and lows--while a creature that is ultimately admired and prized, it nonetheless endures humble beginnings as a caterpillar, faces and survives the dark of the cocoon, and must go through much struggle to emerge as a beautiful being that reaches for the sky in flight--as this story relays such an existence reflects Roma’s own start in life during a grim chapter in Ireland’s recent history, her tragic sorrows, her disappointments and struggles as she drew strength from her beautiful, vibrant faith which continuously lifts her up and carries her.
Roma doesn’t just recount her past; she bares her soul as she reveals deeply personal and painful moments, like when she lost each parent while still very young. But Roma also describes how leaning on God and trusting Him sustained her. As we all must go through such painful rites of passage, her story actually achieves being life-changing for the reader—benefiting one with its guidance through familiar tough times and its encouragement on surviving them. As I read it, her relatable experiences touched upon many of my own memories, she has a way of making the reader feel as though he or she is a twin of fate. I can’t recall ever having been so choked up as a reader with the range of emotional experiences Roma brings to life on each colorful page, while at the same time being incredibly edified in the faith by her wisdom and perseverance.
The biblical passages, poetry, artwork, and motivational adages all harmonize for maximum effect, deepening Roma’s narrative and adding layers of increased understanding and emotional attachment for the reader.
The book contains a table of contents that identifies chapters comprised of various virtues and universal feelings, each section delving into that particular topic as reflected in Roma’s life and written in a way that we can all identify with or aspire for.
On one especially sad note for this book, Roma’s former co-star and motherly friend, Della Reese, passed away before its release. But not before she wrote the foreword for it, making this message all the more priceless.
While Roma Downey is an accomplished actress and producer, I can attest that her writing lives up to the same high caliber for the ability to connect, move, and entertain. It is no coincidence that you do truly feel touched by an angel with this story!
This has to be one of my favorite books of all time! Reading "Box of Butterflies" feels like reading personal letters from a very close friend, and I can see myself reading this book over and over again throughout the remainder of my life. This book is food for the soul.
Roma Downey has been inspiring me for many years through her works on and off screen, and I love how she poured her heart and soul into this book. Along with Roma's personal stories and touching words, "Box of Butterflies" is filled with amazing quotes, poems, prayers, and art images — all of which really speak to the heart and soul. A heavenly light shines bright in this book. I've really never read or looked at a more beautiful and inspirational novel, inside and out. The same can be said of its author, Roma, who is one of the most beautiful and inspirational people I have ever known or known of, inside and out.
This is a wonderful addition to any public, private, or home library!
I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the book's publisher for my honest review, which I am very grateful for, however this is a book I felt the need to hold in my hands as I read it, so I purchased a physical copy of "Box of Butterflies" upon its release, as a birthday gift to myself.

Box of Butterflies Discovering the Unexpected Blessings All Around Us by Roma Downey Howard Books Christian Pub Date 06 Mar 2018 I am reviewing a copy of Box of Butterflies through Box of Butterflies through Howard Books and Netgalley: Roma Downey has saw butterflies as a reminder of God's presence from the time she was a little girl in Ireland. They appeared at the moments when she most needed these reminders. Like the story lines in the widely popular Touched by An Angel that skyrocketed her career, the stories in this book offer a central theme of God and Faith along with inspirational and motivational stories. Roma Downey was born in Derry City Ireland, a beautiful border town in North West Ireland, but from the time she was about eight she grew up in the midst of a war. At eighteen Roma Downey left Derry and went to Brighton College of the Arts in London. While away at school she lost her Father. This book is a gentle reminder that through the good times and bad we are never alone, that we have someone watching out for us, helping us when we call out to him.
Roma Downey's Faith shines beautifully in this book.
I give Box of Butterflies five out of five stars, and yet it deserves so much more!
What a delight! I loved listening to this book and loved that Roma herself narrated it. The stories she told of the events in her life and the blessings she's received through the years were a joy to hear. I really enjoyed the Bible passages and quotes she incorporated into the book--it's obvious it was a labor of love for her.
Since one of my New Year's Resolutions for 2018 is to read a book a month, with my focus on the lives of inspirational women, I requested the chance to be part of the pre-launch team for Roma Downey's new book, Box of Butterflies, when the opportunity arose. I put another book down when the digital copy arrived, and I am happy to say I did. I am not much of a reader, hence the resolution, but this book I read with ease and interest. Roma's delivery is like sitting and chatting with a friend having tea, full of story-telling, poems, songs, and Scripture that deepen the message. When she speaks of "coincidence", I have to say that it truly resonated, as this book came to me as a personal perfect start to Lent. Toward the end of the book, as she describes an event in which her mother is reminding her that she is always there, I stopped and prayed to my brother, who I lost almost four years ago. The very next page of the book was a very clear and undeniable sign that he is still with me. It was an incredible finish to a book filled with encouraging words for anyone and everyone, no matter what you may be good through ~ joy, pain, loss, hope, and all the stuff of life. I hope this book finds its way into the hands of many people who may need to see or be reminded that we never walk alone.
Like many other fans, I have been a fan of Roma Downey's since her days as Monica on Touched By An Angel. When I saw she was coming out with her new book, Box of Butterflies, I couldn't wait to read it.
Box of Butterflies is as beautiful as it is inspirational. Downey's book is part memoir, part inspiration, and part beauty. Throughout the book, Downey shares some of her personal history and challenges that she has over come to be who she is today. She not only inspires readers through her story, she also shares poems and songs that have inspired her through her life. In the midst of her story and the inspirational poems and songs, she also shares beautiful pictures of butterflies and nature. Downey shares how butterflies have a special meaning to her and how they have been a special messenger from God at different times in her life. Her stories and the pictures all work together to create a truly lovely and inspiring book.
I would encourage any fan of Roma Downey's to get a copy of Box of Butterflies. At the same time, I think this book could be real encouragement to uplift someone who is feeling down, who is ill, or need of being uplifted through any difficult life circumstance. Downey clearly has faced difficulties in her life and has kept her deep faith in God. She also tells of her relationship to the late Della Reese and shares part of why their relationship is so special in Box of Butterflies. Reese also wrote the forward to her book before she passed away making it even more special for Touched By An Angel fans. This beautiful book will remind you that "God Loves You" and who can't use a little more of that?
I received an electronic copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for the book.
This book was so beautiful and uplifting! I loved that Roma talked about, when she met Della Reese (Tess) and how they became like family. She was like a mom to her, since Roma had lost her mom at an early age.
"Box of Butterflies: Discovering the Unexpected Blessings All Around Us" by Roma Downey, is truly a goodread ! From beginning to end all the stories, pictures, poetry and lyrics are inspiring and heartwarming. The butterfly is a perfect symbol used to represent God's love around us and the chosen bible scriptures are at the top of my list of favorites...
Roma D shares intimate moments of her childhood, like growing up in the war torn 'Troubles' of Northern Ireland. As I was reading the chapter, I gave thanks to God (for keeping her alive for one thing) and for giving her the heart to live strong in the Faith. Roma also writes about the emptiness she felt after the death of her beloved mom, then her "da". My heart bled for her as she struggled to keep going - carrying the void that comes from the heartbreak of losing our parents.
I never equated Christianity with Hollywood before - but this wonderfully talented gal from Derry, Ireland, is proving otherwise. Roma is bringing Our Creator into the limelight not only in this book but in her multi media endeavors. As a Christ follower and patron of the arts my spirit has been refreshed by "Box Of Butterflies"- and I'm already awaiting the sequel...
Book: Box of Butterflies Author: Roma Downey Type: Inspirational, real life
I have had the wonderful opportunity to be part of the launch team for this book. I have not been disappointed. The life experiences that Roma Downey shares throughout the pages of her book are so parallel to many circumstances we face on our own life journey, that it makes the contents all the more real, and ultimately uplifting and inspirational. Her losses, her gains, her inspiring moments and her challenging times are each written from the heart. The publication is both emotional and yet joyous; inspirational yet challenging, giving us the opportunity to ponder. Her hurts of the past become ours for a moment as we identify with a circumstance read, but her faith in God comes across even greater showing that no matter what we are going through He is there for us. The words are life changing if we will but spare time to consider the words of such an inspirational, yet very easy to understand book; and totally in the category of 'don't want to stop reading it!' The artwork is fabulous! It works in well with all the positive chapters, making the book really wholesome and one to cherish; yet a book that can be picked up time and again for another read. Rarely do we read a book and consider it timeless, but I get the feeling this one could just well be, as the contents are shared experiences that all of us now or in the future will inevitably continue to come across. I would definitely recommend it, without hesitation.
This was a lovely book and an uplifting read. I found Roma Downey to be just as humble and genuine as the angel she played on Touched by an Angel which was one of my mom’s favorite television shows. We spent many evenings watching it together and as I read this book, I felt very close to my mom who passed away in 2007. For Roma, butterflies are her reminder of God’s presence and they have appeared whenever she needed encouragement or to know that God was there with her. And, in each chapter Roma shares stories of her life, times when butterflies have appeared, poems, quotes, and some scripture. I enjoyed this book very much.
Sprinkled with poetry and favorite quotes, this is a warm and gentle memoir. Reading felt like I was sitting down with Roma over tea while she talked about her life experiences and points out God's provision in even the most difficult of circumstances. I voluntarily read an advanced review copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley and I offer my opinion in response.
This book surprised me with its depth. It was a gift given to me and I misjudged it because of the cover (it looks seriously Hallmarky) It’s full of beautiful poetry by many of my favorite spiritual authors/poets, bible verses and lovely anecdotes by the author, the beautiful actress, Roma Downey. It’s a great book to keep on hand or to give another for spiritual comfort.
Roma take us through her life and how her faith grew with each step of her life. Box of Butterflies is simply one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I do have one warning ... Make sure to keep a box of tissues with you at all times.
A beautiful book of many inspiring quotes from famous authors and poets. I will read these over and over again. It was also an interesting read of her journey through life.
What a powerful book! No matter where you find yourself in life, there is definitely inspiration to be found in this book. Roma Downey does an excellent job of telling her life story and adds a lot of anecdotes and beautiful stories along the way. I was fortunate to be on the launch team and I am very much looking forward to reading my color copy when it comes out. Roma's book helps confirm that God is all around us all of the time, in so many wonderful ways!
I felt so privileged to have been given a chance to preview this book before its national release. I found my self inspired, in awe, humbled and greatly encouraged to keep on keeping on. Through Roma's brokenness during her early years, she found that the only constant source of peace in her life was her faith and love in GOD.. I love her honesty, her wittiness and love that she expounds through these pages. The added bonus of poetry, hymns and scripture was pure icing on the cake. Thank you for writing and sharing from the heart Gods Blessings, Not just for your self Roma but that His blessings are for everyone..
I throughly loved this book! And the timing for me to read this in my life was perfect. Thank you Roma Downey for writing an amazing book of inspiration.
BOOK REVIEW 2/6/18 It is an honor to be a member of “Roma Downey’s Book Launch Team.” In Box of Butterflies, Roma shares her love of God and her willingness to trust Him through some of life’s most difficult times. Her stories will invoke emotions and offer encouragement as we face the challenges and strive to be who God intended us to be.
Roma’s passion for music and theatre began at a young age when her mother encouraged her to take music and dance classes. At the tender age of 11, nothing could have prepared her for the loss of her dear mother. “…we stumbled around in the dark, all of us grieving, unsure of the way forward.” Roma would soon face another devastating tragedy, but through her faith, she would learn that struggles give birth to strength just as a beautiful butterfly emerges from a dark cocoon and spreads its wings to take flight.
Roma’s role as the Angel, Monica on “Touched by an Angel” was her aspiration to be able to show hope and kindness to millions of people and let them know about the love of God. Her story exemplifies courage and she so eloquently reminds us that it was through her stillness that she heard God’s call on her life. While she was thankful for her successes, it was with gratitude that she endured and grew from the challenges along the way.
It is not by coincidence that Roma met her husband, Mark Burnette and together they created a Bible Series for television. She has been blessed with a beautiful daughter and two stepsons. She tells the story of a blossoming friendship with Della Reese and how each woman filled an emptiness for the other.
Box of Butterflies offers encouraging words for trying times. Roma Downey’s words of wisdom will inspire you to look beyond the depths of darkness and rest in the loving arms of the Savior.
