Paranormal Misfits #3

My Fair Impostor

Rate this book
It's not everyday a girl wakes up only to discover her memories have vanished.

Crysta’s past is one huge question mark, but a handsome faerie prince by the name of Kheelan is more than happy to fill in the blanks. He swears Crysta is his one true love, and she’s hard-pressed to argue the point, especially since she’s trying to play catch-up to the social and political upheaval within the Fae realm while avoiding an assassin bent on her destruction, Kheelan’s very own brother, Jareth.

With a magical plague attacking every race in the realm and a mad king dabbling in the Dark Arts, Crysta, her fiancé Kheelan, and her father Rodri, must face the impossible task of convincing the royals of the Unseelie Court to wage war against King Moridan before it’s too late.

But Crysta’s heart and thoughts are somewhere else. Brief flashes of a faerie prince with silver hair and deep, blue eyes continually haunt her.

Who is this mystery man, and why isn’t he Kheelan?

This series will appeal to fans of Cassandra Clare, Helen Harper, Rachel E. Carter, and Julie Kagawa.

A curse, magic, a handsome prince, a father, piercing blue eyes haunting your dreams, a mine, terror and love. Crysta's destiny is calling and leading her on in her journey to heal the Seelie and Unseelie courts. The Fae world's survival is laid at her feet. Find the magic, learn the spells, marry her fiancee, be healed and everything will be happily ever after. Right???...WRONG!

Once again, Crysta finds herself in danger. Why is she hidden away in a mine? Why is there an assassin hunting her and haunting her every dream? Her father is there and the love of her life, so why does everything seem so wrong? Answers aren't what they seem they should be and thoughts that feel important lie just beyond her reach. If she's supposed to fix this realm then why can't she remember?

Crysta has a problem, just a little teensy problem. One that might help, maybe. You see she's missing a memory, well more like ALL of her memories. She awoke to find herself in a cave with her father and fiancee. The only problem is she can't remember them or what happened before she awoke. She's on a race against time to recover her memory, stay safe from the assassin, help her father gather allies for a war against the king and heal her body before whatever is sucking the life and power out of her wins.

Definitely nothing too stressful there. All in a days work for sure. If you've met Crysta from the previous two books in this series (which I highly recommend reading and you MUST start from the beginning, you MUST!), you know she's not the kind of girl to let something stop her from continuing to move forward. No trial, no sickness, no crazy king, no lack of memories. NOTHING!!! She's a real spitfire character for sure. This book is written all from her POV and I loved being inside her head. The scenes where Crysta is starting to figure something out only to have it evade her because of her memories being gone, were very well written. I really enjoyed watching her journey through this book. Lots of lies and answers, deceit and truth, betrayals and friendships.

I really enjoyed the magic and how the author revealed layer by layer of how it works, or how different aspects of the story throughout all three books so far were intertwined and connected. It doesn't end here though, there is another book to come. So those of you who can't wait any longer to further Crysta's story and know what happened after the end of book two, you get to read it soon. Those of you who enjoy reading a series straight through without waiting for the next book, it's coming, be patient, it's coming. I got to the end and had two different thoughts in my head simultaneously..."NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" and "Oh My HEAVENS, I just connected so many different things and Crysta needs to do this and go here and...." Everything is coming together and I need book 4 now but must practice my patience while this amazing author writes it! And if you're waiting go read her Healer series...a favorite of mine! It'll keep you busy while you wait, and highly detached from everything until you finish it. (Yes all of the books in that series are written and available).

If you enjoy paranormal/fantasy then I definitely recommend this book for you. A love triangle has occurred though, but it's not what you might think either. I can't explain it either because then I'd spoil all the tidbits that must be revealed as you read. Great pacing throughout the book and lots of great layers of characters, plot, info...you name it! I will say that a couple that I love is gonna get lots of great scenes.

Content: I usually prefer my books without any language or sex, a couple words here or there and only very mild words are occasionally ok. I will say that I was a little bummed by how many times the word d*** was used throughout the book. A couple other mild swear words were scattered here and there but not as frequent. Some readers won't mind that but I have several friends who prefer to know that info. There was no sex, a few steamier kisses and a handful of innuendos but nothing graphic. There is also a scene where Crysta is meeting with her father and another clan of creatures and she realizes that they aren't clothed and that they're male. It's not graphic, Crysta just reminds herself to look up and knows they're male.

I would love to give this 5* because the writing is great, the storyline was very creative and kept a nice pace. The characters were well developed and I will say that all the books I've read by this author, she is amazing at her character development, like every single character. Not just one character, and she usually has many main and secondary characters that must be flushed out and detailed and for me she nails it every time in her books. But as I said, the language was a little more than I prefer so I'm going with a 4/4.5* rating.

I received an ARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

First let me start off by saying that there is a lot to like about this book. I'm so interested in the plot and where it's all going. I love all the different characters in this fantasy world. The author does a good job of helping me create solid pictures in my mind of how people and places look.

I'm having such a hard time with the a few things though. One is the length of the book. It's about double the size of "normal" novels so it takes double the time to read. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a bookworm. I LOVE to read. Long books can be like double stuff oreos. But this book needs some cutting down. I felt like I was swirling in one place for a really long time before moving on. I was frustrated for most of this book because the MC isn't in a good place with her memory loss and who she is with. I kept thinking that things would change eventually and get back on track and things did change, but not in a way that had me any less frustrated. And then I was left with a big cliff hanger ending. AGAIN. I'm just not a fan of those. Especially in a series where I have to wait for quite awhile for the next book. Since I didn't get much satisfaction with the plot or relationships in this book it left me feeling extra frustrated.

I think maybe this Paranormal Misfit series isn't for me. I don't think I'll be coming back to it. I think I should have learned from the author's previous series (which I really did enjoy) about those cliffhanger things. I might have enjoyed this series more if I could read one book right after the other.

This series should be read in order. Don't start with this book!

Content: kissing, innuendo, frequent mild swearing (more than I am comfortable with and another reason I won't be coming back to this series), some violence

This series is amazing for several reasons. First of all, from the very beginning it was such a great story line. For something that was originally only supposed to be a short story it sure has blossomed into an amazing story. ( the author said).
Another great thing about this series is the authors ability to continually surprise me.
Their fulltime of twist and turns!

I am so happy with this book and can't wait for the next one!

I stuck with this series because I read the description and I’m such a sucker for amnesia plot lines. It’s so tropey but I love them. And it wasn’t too bad. It negates all the instalove between Crysta and Jareth, especially since his brother was telling Crysta Jareth was trying to kill her.

What a exceptional waste of time..... This book is sitting down to enjoy a cup of tea only to find out the milk is off......

So Crysta has lost all memory from past two books and has forgotten Jareth, thanks to Kheelan she now believes Jareth is the enemy and Kheelan is her one true love....

But the reason i gave this book 1 star is i HATED Crysta, i wasn't rooting for her to win and in all honesty she is so stupid i don't think she could save a pancake let alone the whole fae realm.....

So at one Point Crysta gets pulled under ground and is warned by a complete stranger who has nothing to lose or gain that her traveling companions intentions might not be true, and that one of the blokes she was travelling with was the cause of her mothers death, on top of this Crysta's familiar was extreemly comfortable with Jareth and the cherry on the cake she is starting to remember him her response to all this...

"I had no reason to trust these flashes of my past"

After a long and suffering slow imperceptive journey with Crysta and her self denials we eventaully get to 43% of the book and

"I was such an idiot. Following along in a blind haze."

After discovering the truth from all sides she doesn't trust what is in front of her, And despite Jareth being nothing but kind, and i repeat her remembering him, she is just downright cruel.

"I inclined my head in a stiff nod and headed out the cell completely ignoring the hand he offered."

This is toward Jareth by the way, who has offered her nothing but the truth, yep she is definitely a beacon of hope.

The after Kheelan refuses to return her memories the rest of the book has them wondering what they can do to reclaim the missing piece that Kheelan holds to the spell he weaved, yet in the previous book the spells could be broken by killing its caster.... Um there solution.... but nope the rest of the book has everyone else writhing around in agony as Kheelan sits comfy in his cell.

Crysta still oblivious to well anything really can however remember prom night, Ballet and even that men wear tights being classed as meterosexual in the human realm.

Later in the novel Crysta starts remembering Jareth, instead of being elated and trying to bring forth such a revelation her response.

"Instead of attempting to bring that memory to life within my mind i opted to change the subject."

By this point i think Jareth deserved a whole lot better , Crysta seemed to give anyone a chance other than him. I just really ended up disliking her and not having any emotional investment in her. Loved Jareth though, good news is him and his ex were speaking at the end at least she was willing to fight for him.

Third times a charm as they say. This books shows this for sure! Not that there was anything wrong with the first two books. I really liked them, but for every book I read in this series it just keeps getting better and better and way more intense!

The memory loss and the confusion, fear and deceit that came with it for Crysta and was absolutely beautifully written. I couldn’t have asked for it to be better. Her coping with it all pulled on my emotions and I loved how it shaped and reformed her relationship with Jareth. It was exciting seeing how the drama and push and pull between them played out with her amnesia. It was also very realistic just for the fact that her mixed emotions, trust issues and mental disarray was so complex and well thought out by the author.

As amazingly written the tumult was, the turn around was somewhat disappointing. One second she found it difficult to trust or believe in the people around her, which is completely fair considering what she had been through. But the next second she suddenly trusts her uncle and Jareth. Not full heartedly perhaps, but still. Just a few pretty words from Jareth and she is pudding in his arms? I found it almost anticlimactic since I excepted perhaps a bigger gesture from him to prove he was trustworthy. The same scenario happened at the delegation as well and it annoyed me even more. A fancy speech, some (cringy) applause and racism was no more. Forget the fact that the faeries had been believing and breathing these prejudices for centuries. A five minute speech from Crysta and all is equal and right in the world again. Racism isn’t cured in a day. If it truly was that easy, then it wouldn’t even exist in the first place.

Although I was against it at first, not being much of a fan of love triangles, Crysta’s amnesia built up her “fake” relationship with Kheelan wonderfully, with the growing feelings that made the betrayal really heartfelt. Then again, as much as Crysta felt betrayed it was also disappointing how little she showed it when she finally confronted Kheelan. It actually bugged me to no end how friendly, supportive and understanding she acted instead. Fore shame really. She had no reason to treat him that way and all the reason in the world to despite him. It was just so unsatisfying and out of nowhere.

Also, speaking of unsatisfying and out of nowhere, “flaming hobgoblins” please someone remove that from the book. It was so overused and not even good the first time around.

Overall I really enjoyed My Fair Impostor. Sure, I had some issues with it but it was nothing compared to all the suspense, drama and toe curling romance I got in bucketload instead. I hope fourth time will be a charm as well and My Fair Invader is even more intense!

I am voluntarily reviewing a complimentary review copy of this book.

Ok, the bad news and the good. The bad news is that things have become so complex at this point that even thinking of summarizing it for a review is exhausting (so it's a relief that the kindle blurb does a decent job doing so). The good news is that everything works, makes perfect sense (despite the plot with its myriad twists and turns, murderers and politics) - and is great fun at the same time.

Highly recommended.

The entire fae realm has been affected by dark magic and the only savior is at the mercy of others as she tries to put the pieces of her life back together. With her mind under lock and key, Crysta must relearn her magical abilities to free her memories if she wants to save the ones she has come to love.

Deceit, lies and infatuation follow her as she struggles to piece together others perception of her life, who can she trust? and who is an impostor? All she has is instinct, but will that be enough.

Two men compete for her attention, both getting under her skin. One weaves his love through lies and the other lies through love. She’s lost and has to make up her mind, something much greater than herself is on the line - will she give up her happiness to save the fae? Or will she come to realize maybe she’s better off without memories because she wasn’t happy at all?

A spell binding continuation in the Paranormal Misfit series. A feel good, non-sexual, quick, enjoyable read.

Recommended for paranormal romance lovers or people interested in fae, elves and the like.

Received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Crysta, a Fae princess, woke up with all the symptoms of flu and no memory of her identity, side effects from “severing the link” – whatever that meant. It supposedly had something to do with the fact that an assassin sent to kill her had tried to use a magical link to do so. Now she struggles to regain those memories. Things are not right. She gets glimpses of memories that would contradict all she has been told – but then those memories disappear.

The pacing of this story was wonderful and will keep the reading deeply involved as events play out. Will Crysta discover what she needs to know in time to save the Fae? Or will she be led down the wrong path and not fulfill her destiny? This well written book is definitely one you will want to read! I highly recommend it!

This series is unique and well written. I would have given it five stars, but I didn't find the beginning part of the book to be as good as the rest of the story. I felt it was rushed and a lot of stuff was left out. I enjoyed the ending of the book. I really want more details on what is going on with the characters and what Crysta is thinking and feeling. This is a challenging time for her in many ways and she is going to change and grow a lot during this process. I hope we get to see more of it from her perspective. While this book was longer. I would've enjoyed it I more if there were more details given in it. I recommend the book series, she is a very talented writer and she has a good story line with interesting characters.

I loved this book also. All the betrayals and things being revealed about the different characters was definitely shocking and jaw dropping. My head is still spinning with everything I learned about all the secrets that were being kept. I honestly loved all the twist and turns. I was not expecting what happened to happen. What's not to love with magical dragons, mermaids, and everything else that is scary and beautiful. I honestly loved the fantasy novella aspect of this series. The author kept me on my toes and keeps this story interesting and mysterious at every turn. I wonder what will happen next.

After reading the first two books in this series, I was completely hooked. Crysta is such an amazing character with qualities that I could only dream of having. My Fair Imposter was riveting, dramatic, and it ended far too quickly. I could read about Crysta and her story forever. Waiting patiently (and so excitedly) for the next book to be released, C. J. Anaya is one of my favourite authors, all her books have an intriguing storyline and you’ll never be bored. Loved this book more than my favourite food, and that’s saying a lot.

Fair

This review includes My Fair Assassin and My Fair Traitor, as well as My Fair Imposter. These are engaging, exciting and gripping books, not to mention quite frequently funny. I enjoyed them very much. I also appreciate the not-so-subtle double message to young women - you need to find out for yourself who you are and what you can accomplish, but you don't have to do everything alone.

I loved the writing in this book. I was drawn into the story from the first page. Will she get her memory back? Is Jareth really her fated mate? What really is her role in this whole thing? I was into the story so much that I was frustrated at the cliff hanger ending. I will be impatiently waiting for the next book.

I loved this book from start to finish! So many questions were answered, yet so many left unanswered. There were multiple twists and turns and so much drama. I love Crysta and Jareth, I was rooting for them the whole way, and i will keep rooting for them! CJ Anaya did an amazing job with this book, and I can’t wait for the next one to come out!

This book was so good. I want to read it again right now. So much underling and unpacking of details and plot. I enjoyed seeing the different Dynamics between Crysta and Kheelan vs Her and Jareth. The descriptions of places was so we'll do. I felt like I was in the Mines. I felt her claustrophobia. I could visualize all the different species of Fae. What a great read.

So good and so frustrating!

I could wait to read this book, and while it was so good (I couldn’t put it down!!) it was also incredibly frustrating. Just when you thought things might finally get better, another plot twist or more drama would occur and while I couldn’t stop reading, I am craving for things to finally be right between Christa and Jareth! On to the next book…

What a ride, lost memories, new love found through a web of lies. Friendships list and found. I feel that Crysta is begining to come of age and not let others boss her around anymore, she now trusts no one fully. The web of lies continues til the end. Now waiting for book 4 in the series
