I love this series - and Nina and Eddie - and so I fell on this the moment I could! Such an enjoyable read (and, thankfully, now that the daughter is a little older she's far less irritating). I read this on holiday and it was perfect for it. Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights.

I read the King Solomon’s Curse, 2 years ago and was so impressed with the story and action involved. This book follows onto that. After being invited onto a ship, Eddie Chase and Nina Wilde soon noticed they were in danger, shame as they could have retired by now. Another full on action story, taken place in all sorts of different countries with plenty of twists and turns. Really enjoyed this once more 🙂

The electric hypercar chase through a solar farm in the desert while a space laser chased them was the pinnacle of literature.

Last year's Nina and Eddie book was among the best the series had to offer. This year's offering is among the worst. Lacking any interesting action aside from one scene toward the end, having a dry and tired story, and containing a villain so bland you'd be forgiven for not remembering a thing about the character an hour after reading, Andy McDermott's fourteenth novel in this series is not so much a rollercoaster as an elevated train ride. There are a couple points where you go "wow" but for the most part, it's entirely mundane; especially for this author. I had it shipped in from England since I am such a fan of the series but this one just did not do it for me. It didn't have the archeological stuff happening and relied more on a hamfisted Mcguffin to carry things through to the end.

I've come to the conclusion that every even numbered book in the series tends to be the weaker, meaning next year will probably present a better book. But after King Solomon, a book I felt was really taking things in the right direction, this is a total disappointment.

Nina and Eddie had gone through a bit of rough patch recently and I did find myself struggling to like Nina. She is slowly coming back to being the character that pulled me in in the original books. Now its her grandmother who grates on my nerves!

The crew are headed back into previously trod waters in Atlantis. Nina has accepted a lecturing position on a very opulent cruise ship. But before we know it she and Eddie are knee deep in trouble again. Nina is accused of theft of an artefact and goes off the reservation again! Who knew that Eddie would be the voice of reason!

Macy is wee bit less annoying this time around and even her little "kleptomaniac" moment managed to help save the day and Nina's gran...well she is annoying and grating on the nerves but she does come up trumps in the "contacts" department. The fact that she doesn't love Eddie really annoys me. Eddie has always been my favourite character, even though I'm a history/archaeology nut myself. His very Yorkshire sense of humour (and obscenities I admit) just get me smiling.

Hoping against hope that Nina is finally over the woe is me I've made all the big discoveries I'll ever make attitude and get back to being the lovable character I used to love!

I love everything about this universe McDermott has created, the characters are everything you'd want from a rip roaring, archaeological action/adventure thriller, the locations are beautifully described and the action can be a little over the top but fun. After reading this latest instalment though, I felt the series begin to slip. For me this book was pretty mundane, I felt numb whilst reading it, nothing felt fresh and it was predictable in parts. Yes it has it usual fill of action, probably a little too much, almost every page there was an action scene. I was seriously let down by the lack of page turning suspense when it came to the discovery side of things. It lacked a plot, it lacked direction. Towards the end it felt very much copy and paste of earlier tales told by McDermott.

I understand it must be difficult to write a good story for a yearly release but I felt after this book, the series could do with a break maybe allowing Andy to go away and come back with fresh ideas and an actual direction he wants to take the story in. I hope the next book puts the series back on track, if not then I think thats curtains.

Sadly the Wilde/Chase series is dead, it should have stopped at book 12, since then the books have concentrated far to much on their married life, book 13 was filled with regrets about abandoning Macy, they stumbled onto secrets hidden for centuries without any real journey and unfortunately book 14 is more of the same. Its time for some new characters now, as soon as Wilde and Chase became a family the adventures should have stopped, after all I want my adventure stories to provide an escape from reality not a confirmation of my own life. Sorry Andy.

Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase are back in a rollicking adventure, doing what they do best: saving the world, or a part of it.
Andy McDermott keeps raising the stakes when it comes to elaborate action sequences. These are the pillars of the tales he weaves and anybody can appreciate that there's a plan for each sequence and the story works to stitch them together. I'm not complaining. Following on what I feel was Andy's best (King Solomon's Curse), Spear of Atlantis is a worthy follow up.

I've read all the books on the series and noted the decline in quality. This book was undoubtedly the worst with an below average plot, total reliance on jumping from action scene to action scene but most unbelievable was the the inability for anyone to die from injuries. Seriously, this read like it was targeted for an under 10 year old market. Very disappointing.

Still a fun ride, but starting to feel familiar

As a longtime fan of the Wilde & Chase series (yep, I’ve read every book and loved it), diving into The Spear of Atlantis felt like catching up with old friends. Eddie’s still sarcastic and unkillable, Nina’s still brilliant and grounded, and the action? Still explosive and relentless, in true Andy McDermott fashion.

This time it’s all about Atlantis (again!) and a legendary spear tied to ancient secrets and world-ending stakes aka a very typical day for these two. The mythology was actually one of my favourite parts, with some fun twists on the usual Atlantis lore. And I’ll never complain about booby-trapped ruins and globe-trotting chaos it’s why I read these books.

That said, I did find myself wishing for something… different. Or deeper. The plot structure feels pretty by the numbers at this point, and while that can be comforting, it also made some of the twists feel a bit predictable. I was also hoping for more development in Eddie and Nina’s relationship it's been 14 books, and while their chemistry is still solid, their emotional arc feels like it’s stuck in place.

Still, if you’ve made it this far into the series, you know what you’re here for: fast-paced action, ancient mysteries, and a whole lot of snark. The Spear of Atlantis delivers that in full. Just don’t expect it to reinvent the formula.

Hoping Book 15 shakes things up a bit!

Andy McDermott once again brings a fast pace action packed story. We follow Nina Wilde and her husband Eddie Chase as they go from honored guests of a Middle Eastern Emir on the maiden voyage of his cruise liner to speak on the discovery of Atlantis, hoping for a relaxing vacation. From there Nina is set up as the fall guy for the theft of an Atlantean artifact on display aboard the ship and escapes to the shores of Spain as a wanted fugitive. Eddie is forced to chase after a lead to help clear her name. Adventure and double crosses abound as they both race, first apart and then together to stop an ancient weapon from being discovered and then used. A weapon that would make most modern nuclear bombs look like firecrackers.

Absolutely love this series and this book is no exception. Eddie Chase and Nina Wilde are on their 14th adventure with this story although they are reluctantly drawn into the whirlwind of saving the world once again from an Atlantean artefact and a mad person intent on using it.
Andy McDermott has again taken me on a ride of almost non stop action and humour reminiscent of Clive Cussler at his best with his Dirk Pitt series.
I have truly enjoyed each and every one of the books in this series and upon finishing this one I have literally put this book down and picked up the next to start reading and keep the rollercoaster rolling.

Very good entry in the series. Lots (and lots) of action, mayhem and surprises. Nina is a lot less bitchy than in the last book but the snark remains and gets old quickly. Tell me again why Eddie puts up with her? Daughter Macy is more of a presence but is in less direct danger which is good in my opinion. I worry that the Wilde/Chase duo may be getting a bit long in the tooth for their own personal brand of chaos but it doesn't diminish the fun for me. As always, I'm looking forward to the next book. Just hope there's minimal kid and snark.

First, I read about a luxury ocean-cruiser and thought, they will destroy it, and the second ship too! Then I read about an electric supercar and a gigantic solar-powered facility, and thought, both will be destroyed! Then I read about yet another atlantean thingy, lost for about 11000 years, and thought, they will find and destroy it! The amount of megadestruction described in this book is just unbelievable!

I liked it VERY MUCH!

If you want serious literature, go read Brecht or Tolstoi, but if you want FUN, read Wilde and Chase!

Nina and Eddie try for a quite life but get roped into adventure again. This time the family gets involved. The group races to keep an ancient super force from the hands of those who want to use its destructive power for their own political advancement. They fight for their lives while trying to beat the clock on an explosion as powerful as a nuke. Story had all the solidarity and humor I have come to expect from the couple and adds some foreshadowing about potential Macy stories in the future. Fast paced attention keeper.

Eddie Chase and Nina Wilde get dragged back in to save the world from an ancient Atlantis artefact that has power like a nuclear bomb. Set mainly aboard a cruise liner a rich Emir has built action and chaos abound when the Emir’s crazy sister decides she wants to start a coup and rule the country of Dhajan. Alula steals the spearhead herself for the purpose of detonating the bomb to wipe out her enemies. Another classic story plot from Andy McDermott.

I noticed there was only 1 death in this entire book. It was really bizarre and jarring reading sentences attached to the end of paragraphs saying things like "luckily, they survived with only minor injuries" and stuff like that. It felt like I was watching a 90s cartoon, back when they couldn't show implied deaths on screen and so every time a missile hit a tank the entire crew would magically fly out of the explosion and roll to safety.

This book is definitely a decline in quality from previous books, but I still enjoyed it overall.

We’ll actually, technically, I didn’t read the book having just willingly sent it back to the library whence I got it.
Why? We’ll I got to about page 50 and it was rubbish. The book had the feeling of being the 48th edition in a long running franchise; author having long given up any idea of bringing any innovation to the party: merely content to serve up the most pretentious claptrap that doesn’t actually require any thought or effort.
Suffice it to say I was not impressed.

Back on form

I'm a huge fan of the Chase and Wilde novels but the last couple seemed to have lost their spark, although enjoyable to read they just weren't as good as others in the series. I happy to say that this one is back on track with a fast paced, action packed plot and all the over the top sciences you expect from this series.

Every book a winner, 14 strong and continuing. This time, Chase and Wilde encounter an Atlantian antimatter containment device that was used as a doomsday device to hold ultimate leverage over their enemies. Now, others want this power to advance their own ends and Chase and Wilde go into action to thwart them.

Andy McDermott is one of my favorite writers and I read all the books of Nina Wilde and Eddy Chase so far.
This one was a bit disappointing and not the witty fast pace as usual.
I found it boring, and it felt without any storyline.
Hope next one will be better again.

Another fast romp that stretches the imagination how these people are still alive beggars belief yet the books are always action packed, with some historical fact and a great way to forget grey days and ordinary woes.

Another wild(no pun intended) one from Andy McDermott. If you like excavators destroying things and dueling ocean liners, this is for you. A fast paced chase to find the missing spearheads of Atlantis. Good guys, bad guys, double crossing, hair cutting and of course, buggeration.

Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase, tracking down an archaeological mystery, again become involved in a demolition derby, this time involving cruise ships off the coast of Bahrain. At the rate they are going, there will be no 21st century artifacts for future archaeologists.

There is one chase scene in particular which I loved!

Despite falling a bit into the formula mode (which most series by any author tend to do) this book ended up being pretty exciting. This story has an all star cast which I would have like to seen more of.

The Spear of Atlantis

Another great read from the cinematic mind of Andy McDermott. No one does excitement better, and Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase are the perfect pair of adventurers ( even if that is not their intention).
