The battle of survival against the invading aliens heats up…but Hell Squad never quits.

Tech genius Noah Kim works day and night to keep the survivors at Blue Mountain Base with lights, power and hot water. He’s also working on a top secret project to help keep them safe. He’s tired, stressed and under pressure—and one woman adds to it all. An annoying, infuriating redhead he calls Captain Dragon.

Captain Laura Bladon lost everything she cared for in the alien invasion: her loving family, her Navy SEAL fiancé and her military career. Since then, she’s been numb, her feelings encased in ice, and she’s dedicated herself to her job as chief interrogator and running the base’s prison. But one person can get under her skin in an instant—arrogant, brilliant Noah. He’s the one thing that makes her feel—and that makes her very afraid.

But as Laura helps Noah on his project, the two are drawn irresistibly together. As they head into the desert with Hell Squad on a mission to a hidden alien outpost, sparks fly and a passionate desire is uncovered. Both are holding onto past hurts, scared to take the risk of loving again…but when the unthinkable happens, it changes everything…and Laura and Noah must find the power to save themselves, their friends and their love.

Just wasn't feeling it. Too much dead ex for me. I felt no chemistry. It was I hate you and then all of a sudden I want to screw you. But I could not believe they had actual feelings for each other.

Sigh, spoilers ahead

I like enemies to lovers books and at the beginning of this one I was ecstatic at the fiery relationship between Noah and Laura, that is until they actually act on the supposed chemistry between them...the constant push/pull in such a short novella is nothing more than very frustrating. Add in the exes(lying, cheating ex for Noah vs heroic love of her life for Laura) and their very frequent mentions and I was not a fan but I persevered. Then Noah is falling in love, nope he's already fallen *face palm* then expects Laura to admit she's in love too (cue the crickets) Noah spews some harsh words, they separate until the dramatic event at the end that forces them both to realize time is of the essence and to hold on to love while they can.
Noah had some childish tantrums that made me want to put this man/child in a time out. Laura ran, then she couldn't resist him, then she didn't want to care about another man again, then she couldn't stop thinking about him then.............. Aye yi yi
Anyways not a favorite but some exciting developments plot wise so moving on!

Ms Hackett has done it again and written a cracking instalment that seemlessly mixes a dramatic sci fi adventure story with a truly believable romance. She wraps it all up in one delicious package but this time ups the ante with aliens not just taking over the world but inside the walls that these survivors call home!
I'm loving these books that chart life on Earth after an alien invasion. Yes it's futuristic with technology that astounds but it's not full of gobbledygook that makes the readers eyes boggle. There's just enough to make it believable and then of course theres the wonderful addition of amazing characters .
The plot usually revolves around the Squads who regularly put their lives on the line but this time geek lovers rejoice! Noah the resident tech genius steps into the spotlight and boy does he do it in style. Constantly under pressure and yet always fighting to save those around him. It's a shame that not everyone sees how hard he tries and there's a certain Captain Dragon who really pushes Noah's buttons! Oh yes Laura might be in charge when it comes to prisoners but when it comes to her libido it's clear that all bets are well and truly off! Expect fireworks, passion and more than a little angst as this couple start to really let themselves go!
A teensy bit of a cliffhanger ending but I'm fine with that because I can't wait to find out what happens next

3 stars.

The tech guru Noah and the prisoner interrogator Laura made an interesting pairing. This is the first book that doesn't have a fighter as a hero but Noah is still quite fit for a geek and there was still lots of action involving the Hell Squad.

There is a bit of a jarring note for me

Series: Hell Squad #6
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Tech genius Noah Kim works nonstop to keep the Blue Mountain Base operational. He is also working on the secret evacuation plan that he hopes won’t be necessary. He is tired, stressed, and irritated and having Captain Laura Bladon constantly on his case makes everything worse.

Noah and Laura have been butting heads since they were introduced. It was nice to get a story featuring a couple that wasn’t a part of the team. Laura is a relatively new character so we didn’t know much about her. We learn that she lost not only her family, but her Navy SEAL fiance as well during the invasion. She spends her days focusing on her job and nothing else, except when dealing with Noah. He makes her feel things again which scares her because she doesn’t want to lose anyone else. Noah refuses to let her run from her feelings though and eventually breaks her walls down.

“We’ve all lost, Noah. But now, it’s about how we pick ourselves up and move forward. Wallowing in the past doesn’t help. The past will always be remembered, and the people we loved will always be special.” - Elle

Noah is a genus but also has a terrible temper and is very blunt. While he is pushing Laura to admit her feelings it makes him admit his own issues and fears from his past. Noah was surprisingly sweet once he stopped fighting with Laura and admitted his attraction. Their switch from hate to attraction was very abrupt though. One of the things that I really loved about these two was their commitment to their jobs. They both have very intense and consuming jobs but they each accepted that and supported each other.

“This was the man who’d brought her back to life, dug under her skin, and changed her completely.”

The last 20% of this book was intense! The confrontation at the base has happened and they have to start over. I cannot wait to jump into the next one and see how the survivors deal with all of these changes.

Trigger Warnings: death of fiancé discussed; death of family mentioned;

Because I read these in one lovely distracting bunch, I’m going to review them the same way. If you like either science fiction romance or post-apocalyptic romance (or both), Anna Hackett’s Hell Squad series is a wonderful way to spend some time in a setting where you absolutely would not want to live. No matter how much fun it is to peek over the characters’ shoulders and see their lives!

One of the fun things about this series is that the ending of each story gives readers a sneak preview of who the main couple will be in the next book. So at the end of GabeGabe we all knew Reed was next. Likewise, Reed foreshadows Roth a bit, and Roth foreshadows Noah. And for those of us who are awaiting the next book with the proverbial bated breath, events at the end of Noah tell us that the next hero is Shaw, who looks like he is finally about to get his head out of his ass – if it doesn’t get handed to him first.

Back to our current three installments, Reed, Roth and Noah. This series so far has shown us two different romantic patterns. In Reed and Noah, just like in Gabe and Marcus we have a couple where the romantic leads are in an opposites attract mode – or at least surface opposites. In these stories, one party is a soldier, and the other is what passes for a civilian in this brave new world. Marcus’ Elle is a former society child turned communications officer, Gabe’s Emerson is the Base’s Chief Medical Officer. With Reed, the woman of his dreams is a scientist and former POW – one that he rescued from the alien’s experimental labs. The couple in Noah still maintains the pattern, but refreshingly reversed. Noah is Blue Mountain Base’s Chief Technologist, and his would-be lady is the Head of Security.

In all of these stories, we have two people who are absolutely certain that they must be wrong for each other, only to discover that they are absolutely right. Who they would have been before the invasion no longer matters. With the remnants of humanity barely holding their own against the reptilian Gizzida, the strength to survive and the need to find joy in the midst of insanity pretty much conquer all superficial differences. Eventually.

Watching these couples who would probably never even have met before the world ended find out they belong together is marvelous.

The story in Roth is similar to the romance in Cruz. Both of the people in the couple are warriors of one stripe or another. In Cruz, Santha is a warrior and a scout. In the case of Roth, the woman who haunts his dreams (in more ways than one) is Avery, who is not just a soldier but was also a member of the team that first negotiated with the Gizzida. As Avery finally recovers from her time as an alien test subject, her newly awakened memories reveal that it wasn’t just the Gizzida who were negotiating in bad faith – the humans were too. Or at least one human – the head honcho of the Human Coalition. The pressure is on Avery to remember everything she can about the traitor and his plans, because Blue Mountain Base is closely threatened by the aliens, and they need a Plan B – a safe place to retreat with all their people, both military and civilian. When Roth and Avery investigate potential bolt holes, they find one hell of a surprise, and a whole lot of hope.

Escape Rating A-: The deeper I get into this series, the more I see it as a science fiction romance/post-apocalyptic crossover. This is a near future Earth, but it is definitely a future. Before everything went to hell in the alien invasion handbasket, this was an Earth where we had finally created a peaceful world Coalition government. That’s an achievement that seems pretty far from where we sit today, on the heels of the terrorist attacks on Paris, Baghdad and Beirut last week.

Hell Squad is also post-apocalyptic without being ‘prepper’ fiction. No one expected an alien invasion. This isn’t about some group that finally had their paranoia justified. Blue Mountain Base was a military base that a lot of Coalition military knew existed. Once the squads start getting together, they go out to rescue other survivors. And of course there is a lot of word of mouth about a safe place that spreads virally among the remaining human population. People still trickle in, and survivors still get found, but fewer and fewer all the time. While I don’t generally like prepper fiction, I like Hell Squad because it focuses on the survival and not the paranoia.

The romances in this series drive the characters, and yet they don’t drive the story. The story is the different things that individuals do (and don’t do) in order to keep humanity alive. We keep learning more and more about the alien invasion, the aliens’ motivations, and finally, what went wrong. The chief characters in each book, the ones who find love amidst the chaos, do some things differently because they have found their own personal reason to live life to the fullest, but the story is about them all fighting the good and necessary fight against terrible odds.

One of the things in this part of the series that is now driving the action forward is that Plan B and the reason it exists in the first place. There has not been much in the series until now of humans acting evilly for evil’s sake or for self-aggrandizing, or even self-preservation, purposes. We finally get a glimpse of the dark side of humanity in Roth, as the Blue Mountain Base discovers that humanity was betrayed in return for a safe haven for a select few. Unlike the betrayal of the human race to the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, our evildoer in the Hell Squad series knows exactly what he’s doing when he sells out 99% of the human race to save himself and his selected elite.

We’ve seen the remnant of humanity at Blue Mountain Base survive. Now that they know what they are doing and why they are doing it, they know they have to do more to throw the Gizzida off our planet. As Emily St. John Mandel repeated in the awesome Station Eleven, quoting the Star Trek Voyager episode Survival Instinct, “Because survival is insufficient.”

It looks like that sentiment is going to drive the rest of the series. And I can’t wait.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrators did a good job. The continuation story arc is heating up and the author did a good job balancing the H/h's storyline with the other things going on.

This may be the weakest of the entire series so far. The relationship between H and h is almost identical to the previous book. Noah is supposed to be a nerdy guy, but he's just another closed-off alpha dolt.

However, the set-up for the next one is really strong, as the sniper is going to rescue the Valkyrie!

The aliens are encroaching on the Blue Mountain Base and Noah is feeling the pressure to get the survivors to safety. If he could only get the technology he needs to play along! To get to the underground encampment, found by Roth in a previous adventure, he needs to be able to cloak the vehicles but so far...no success. Everything he does blasts the power source!

Laura is the chief interrogator on site. She questions/tortures any captured aliens for intel which the survivors can use. But she is dog tired of her technology failing her and her cells losing power. She lays the blame squarely at the feet of Noah, the frustrating, annoying, intensely attractive Noah. However, she lost everything in the invasion and she's not ready to love and lose again. This pair bicker at an Olympic level!!!

With his team mates finding love Noah is felling isolated but why oh why does the feisty, finicky captain get his juices flowing? Will he ever find a way to mesh the cloaking device to the vehicles they need to flee the base when the aliens get too close?

Another fab instalment in the Aussie Sci Fi/Fantasy/romantic suspense series. I love the Australian setting and the characters, who are all bad*%& in their own ways but oh so vulnerable in others. Laura is a tough cookie with a well hidden gooey centre! Wonderful witty match which reminds me of David and Maddie from Moonlighting from the 80's!! Can't wait for more!

Helloooo, Noah!
I wasn't sure Hackett could beat the hectic, feisty pace of Cruz and Gabe, but she nails it here in Noah.

The genius and the snarly captain. Man, those two have been poking at one another for a while now. Not in a sexy way, either. Although, their sparring has been a form of foreplay, so maybe it was a little sexy.

Anyway. Noah and Laura. They're both emotionally closed off. They both *think* they're irritated by the other. They both seem to go out of their way to provoke a response from one another. As it turns out, it was a SERIOUS amount of foreplay the two were actually engaging in.

It's always so cute when smart people are willfully blind to things like that.

Seeing as both Noah and Laura are pretty darn smart (Noah will be sure to tell you what he's capable of if you give him a minute), watching them fall was pretty darn satisfying.

The aliens are continuing their plan to conquer. The human survivors are determined to thwart them. Somehow in the midst of all the crazy carnage, people are falling in love. YES! THAT'S what I'm here for. (And the set up for book 7 has me making big eyes. O.O)

Tech Genius goes toe to toe with Interrogation Guru and loses his heart in the process

I'll confess I was looking forward to Noah and Captain Dragon's (aka Laura) story. I met them in Roth and there was just something there, in their interactions, that had me thinking they deserved their moment to shine, or perhaps spark might be more accurate. This Hell Squad book did not disappoint, though the major players in the story are not the Squads, but the folks back on base who are interrogating prisoners, getting information, and keeping the base, and housing functional for everyone -- as well as prepping for evacuation when the need arises, keeping equipment functional, and generally feeling all the same stress of the war even though they are not out on the front lines.

I was given a review copy in exchange for an honest review, though mostly for me that was just the equivalent of going to the midnight showing Thursday because I couldn't wait until Friday to start reading it on Kindle Unlimited.

Noah & Laura find peace & love
Genius Noah Kim knew where to go when the Aliens invaded Earth. He took off for the Blue Ridge Mountain base. It’s been over a year since the invasion and Noah works day and night to keep things running and safe for the survivors calling this place home. Noah is kind of lonely after being burned by his ex-wife, he thinks love is a joke…but lately, Captain Laura Bladon, aka Captain Dragon, who oversees the prison area and interrogation team, has Noan thinking sexy thoughts, as he snarls about her constant repair requests. Laura lost Jake, the love of her life on day one of the invasion and she thinks love has passed her by.
Working together, under such pressure, one glance leads to a touch, and the next thing they know they’re wrapped in each other’s arms. “Noah” is a wonderful romance in the middle of such tragedy. The Gizzida are super advanced and vicious in their quest to conquer the survivors of Earth. HELL SQUAD is an awesome series I highly recommend. This is a reread for me, on to book 7. Linda

Fiery, red-haired Security Captain Laura Blandon irritated tech genius Noah Kim so much he dubbed her Captain Dragon and the feeling was mutual. Until one day they didn’t and couldn’t stop imagining themselves together. Watching each other work gives Noah and Laura a new appreciation for each other and their jobs. Deciding most of their sniping was emotion from their pre-raptor relationships and Laura accepts Noah’s invitation to the team’s weekly get together.

Noah’s work has been preparing for evacuation since raptors were seen circling the base, Laura’s work gives her an idea for a mission that could help Noah’s work on the power cubes but she doesn’t want him to go. Hell Squad takes them both and the team barely escapes but a team member is hurt! Days later the raptors invade the base, not everyone comes out safely on the other side, including a captured squad member but it’s a hella battle.

I didn't love the vague equivalence between the wounded heroine and the wounded hero; they've both been Wounded By Love, the heroine because she watched her beloved fiance get blown up on a TV screen as part of the alien invasion and the hero because he married a gold-digger this one time. Um. Okay. I also am having more difficulty with the background plot of this series as it progresses - like, no one's grappling with major moral issues at any point. When one of the leads is in charge of interrogation for a secret human base struggling to maintain humanity's very existence, and they're taking alien prisoners, uh... yeah. I have difficulty swallowing the Disney view displayed here. Humanity isn't that nice, frankly. I'm going to continue with the series until my library runs out of the books, but once that happens I doubt I'll go out of my way to finish.

Another thrilling read!!

Noah and Lauren's story. Who says opposites don't attract. These two fiery protagonists did everything to prove t hey were not-definitely not attracted to each other. But lady Luck had other plans. So much happens in this episode including their mountain base is overrun with aliens. But thankfully, they were just about ready to evacuate. Sadly not all escaped. But the convoy- operation Darkwing- is now on its way to another safe haven - Enclave. But it is a dangerous journey. Noah's illusion technology will provide the co Dr to keep the convoy safe. This love story between the tech genius and the prisoner interrogator was emotional, sexy and at times, poignant. Another great read!!

Noah, the tech genius at the Blue Mountain base is trying desperately to figure out how to disguise the entire evacuation convoy. The survivors must leave their base because it has been discovered that the raptors know about it. Fortunately, there is another community of survivors discovered by Avery and Roth in the previous book. However, that many humans traveling are a perfect target for attack. We learn more about his background and that of Captain Laura Bladon who runs the prison on base. This book covers their relationship and the work leading up to and resulting in the evacuation of the Blue Mountain base.

Passionate

Noah is a fun character, he has the whole sexy geeky vibe but in this book we get to see his alpha side shine through. He leads a high stress life trying to keep the secret base running and trying to divise an escape plan for when the aliens decide its time to attack. In the mist of all this he has the overbearing Captain Bladin on his case 24/7. These two show so much passion and conflict its hard to see them ever coming together.

This book was full of action, adrenaline and heart ache. Now I need to dive into the next book.

was confused

Why didn’t they take the humans via the planes. They could fly little by little and would not need to have issues. Since the other place was fitted out, would have needed so much.
At min they should have transported the families, seniors and sick, etc.
some other issues, the other prisoners? Why the heck would they bring more? They were evacuating.
Let’s say I almost gave it a three stars because I was disappointed by Noah and the Dragon story.
Hope the other couple is not disappointing.

Had me swooning and biting my nails! This is certainly one of my most favorite series! Mrs. Hackett never disappoints with her steamy romance, strong characters, action packed suspense, & thrilling adventure! Noah had all of that & more! The characters always seem to end up in situations where I think 'Oh no, how will they ever get out of this????'! Mrs. Hackett has it all taken care of but boy, oh, boy does she ever make it a fun ride!!!!

Fast paced and enthralling

Noah’s story is so hard to read. Both he and Laura have such difficult baggage to overcome, it seems an impossible task. They push and pull at each other, all the while fighting the Aliens and other obstacles in their way. Well written, entertaining, and fast paced; I cannot get enough of this series!

*4.5* I really am a sucker for a sexy computer geek! My husband would agree. Noah is definitely that and he and Laura and so damn hot together. The action and sexiness of thos book are amped up. This was the best in the series this far. I have also noticed as this series progresses, Hackett's writing is improving immensely. It should be expected, but I always find it refreshing when I see it happening. Definitely check out this book.

Noah and Laura!
The base is conducting practice exact runs. They want to be prepared for the highly possible raid on their base from the raptors. Noah is a tech genius and is working in overdrive to make sure their illusion system is working so that they can safely and stealthily escape if it comes to it.
And Laura is the bases interrogation captain. Working on getting information from the raptors captives.

Great book

I’m thoroughly hooked on these books. This story of Noah and Laura was a fiery and intense story of love and recovery. Loved it. Their lives were so different but they found each other amidst the chaos and stress of the invasion of the Gazida attacks. Great suspense and drama. Can’t wait for Shaws book now.

Given I started this book assuming it was just a barrier to knock down before getting to Shaw and Claudia, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Noah and Laura sparked together beautifully, and the urgency of Operation Swift Wind provided a very compelling backdrop. Excellent finale and it's FINALLY TIME.
