Look, there was no meaningful plot here and no characterization to speak of. But consider: mushroom lesbian lore. Big spiders. Mushroom cows. Honestly, it’s worth a read, even though it’s basically the book equivalent of a bag of potato chips. Mostly salt and air but incredibly addictive!

Can I just tell you, I started this GL manga aptly titled “Mushroom Girls in Love” when I bought a bunch of manga used on fb marketplace years ago.
And the first couple chapters is the two mushroom girls (in love) having a wedding and hanging out and then at the end of the 2nd chapter, one of them grew gnarly black pubes that are apparently rot killing them???
An elder whips out a huge carpentry saw to cut out her mushroom vajayjay??? Is this mushroom medical care?? And now she can’t have kids or walk?
Then they get attacked by a giant spider and there’s a kidnapping and a rescue and joining a nomadic tribe of hunters to hide for the rest of their lives??? With a big gaping thigh gap where her mushroossy used to be??

And the author is most known for a centaur high school manga and anime that is full of fanservice with a schoolgirl centaur with huge tits that also has a holocaust episode about frog people putting animal children in death camps!?! WHAT ON EARTH?????

When you turn to the very first page of Mushroom Girls in Love, you immediately see a LGBT wedding and two girls kissing, which is pretty much the greatest thing ever for a yuri fan. However, Kei Murayama’s one-shot is nothing like your typical yuri story; there are no high school girls struggling with their sexuality. Instead, it’s about a planet full of intelligent, human-like mushrooms and fungi, where every single one of them is female.

It sounds odd at first, but it’s actually fascinating. The story follows two mushroom girls who get married. Arriala is a herder who lives in the forest and tends to cattle, whereas Erriela is a scribe who works for the royal family. Through certain circumstances, they stumbled upon each other and fell in love. But their marriage isn’t without problems. It turns out that the royal princess is infatuated with Erriela (the scribe) since they grew up together. So, the princess devises a scheme to kidnap her, and Arriala (the herder) needs to get Erriela back.

Because of this, there is a fair amount of action in the book, which is refreshing – it’s not something you usually see in most girls love series. And you also don’t usually see political themes either, but Mushroom Girls in Love is chock full of them. However, this isn’t too surprising considering Kei Murayama is also the creator of A Centaur’s Life.

The political themes are actually one of the most unique aspects of the manga. For example, strict roles exist in the mushroom society; normally a scribe (like Erriela) is higher in the social hierarchy and wouldn’t marry a herder (like Arriala), who is lower on the scale. As the story progresses, we learn about the history of their world and how the mushroom society operates. For such a short series, Murayama put a lot of thought into the story’s world. There is also a fair amount about how mushrooms and fungi function as organisms, which I found really interesting, despite the fact that I think fungus is… like really gross.

Overall, the story is about 50% political and 40% yuri. And the last 10% is… mushrooms. It makes for a very different type of girls love story. Although yuri isn’t the main focus (it’s more of an added bonus), this manga has some very interesting views on lesbian relationships. Since everyone on the planet is female, it’s normal for women to have romantic relationships. It was wonderful to see women having such relationships without them being constantly questioned by others or by the characters themselves. Another cool element was how they had children. Because mushrooms reproduce asexually, women couples can have their own kids! Well, at least most of the time. Although this fungi world may seem like a yuri paradise, it is far from perfect, and some parts of Mushroom Girls in Love feel like a social commentary about our own human society.

My only complaints about the book are the ending, the characterization of Erriela, and the romantic development. Things just wrap up too quickly at the end. This is probably because the series is short, but it still felt rushed. The ending would have been much more satisfying if the conclusion had a couple more pages; the last chapter was much shorter than all of the other ones — probably only a quarter of their length. It also would have been nice to see Erriela fleshed out a bit more; she is portrayed as smart yet clumsy, but in the end, she just kind of falls into the role of damsel in distress. We see a lot more of Arriala since she is the heroine.

And finally, I would have like to have seen their romantic relationship developed more. It’s obvious they really care about each other, but some more background information or even more flirting would have been a nice touch.

Despite its English title, this manga has a lot more going on in its story – like the troubles of a conflict-ridden society – than just, well, mushroom girls in love. If you want to see more in-your-face yuri, it would be better to read something like Citrus or Bloom Into You. But if you want a different, thought-provoking, and all-around unique story with some yuri (and mushrooms) thrown in, Mushroom Girls in Love may be worth picking up.

Yeah I have no idea how to rate this, so I just won't. It was a really weird story. I got the gist of what was happening, its a pretty basic story when you take out the fact that these are mushroom people. I don't know what I was expecting from this. It wasn't horrible and it wasn't great either it was just...yeah the gif really says it all.

I will say that I hated the tarantula so if you are an arachnophobe like me just be wary.

Would recommend if you are looking for something out of the ordinary and your sick of all the regular f/f romances or maybe you really really love mushrooms I would recommend it to you too.

one in a handful of books i read and then immediately forgot about. certainly cute and better worldbuilding than expected but i never got over that they all look the same and the main couple essentially have the same name except for one letter lmao. that is peak lesbianism let’s be honest but i don’t remember anything about either of them except the names oops sorry

whoa okay i thought i was going to get a cute sapphic story about mushroom girls in a beautiful, whimsical world devoid of men.

i got that... partly. but instead of a cute story i got a really confusing, half-baked fantasy plot with way too many encyclopaedia-style info-dumps.
(to be fair, this is tagged fantasy and not GL so my bad for expecting cute shit maybe- but for a fantasy, this was also just lacking.)
and even for something to not take seriously, it was really not all that enjoyable.
i hate stuff that overexplains simple concepts but then still manages to be all over the place in a way that makes it difficult to follow.
like, MISTER YOU JUST TOLD ME SOMETHING EXTREMELY OBVIOUS, yet you are NOT concerned about me getting all that ACTUALLY confusing stuff???

i wanted to love it. maybe it would have been better if it had a few more volumes so all these concepts thrown at the reader could've been explored a bit more in-depth.

the manga was also quite confusing visually. while i got the gist of what happened, especially the fight scenes left a lot to be desired and all the characters kinda looked alike. same-face syndrome going strong here.
The artstyle was beautiful though, i'll give it that. and i kinda liked the epilogue for whatever reason.

all in all... not what i expected, not the worst i ever read, not something i'll ever pick up again.
Three stars for effort and cute cover i guess, two seems a bit harsh.

...i'll never get over the fact that i still don't know for sure whether or not mushroom-girl boobs serve any actual purpose besides aesthetics, and i fear thinking about that broke my brain.

I mean with a title like "Mushroom Girls in Love" and a cute cover like this I obviously had to get this. I love the premise of this, but the execution was lackluster. I think there were just too many things the author wanted to explore but couldn't get into because it's a one-shot. I do like the direction most of the ideas were going in, but in the end it felt like I was left with more questions than answers. But one thing I know for certain, those mushroom girls sure do be in love.

Beh, non so mica cos'è ho letto qua.

Da un lato c'è un mondo vagamente distopico perché gli uomini si sono estinti e solo i miceti sono in grado di sopravvivere. Insieme a qualche raro animale.

I love the concept of this very much. There is an interesting world but we never get to see it in depth. It zooms by the end the story. There is a play with gender and norms, social class and culture but it never gets fleshed out. Unfortunately in this one shot. I feel volumes would have helped with this. I was excited and unfortunately let down due to not getting to learn about the entire world. There is a "shroom-pedia" that explains its elements, however, I would have Loved to have seen it lived out in the plot.

This had the potential to be better than it ended up being. The story's cute, the environment and lore's neat, but the art felt a little...inconsistent in its detail quality. (Sometimes the backgrounds were beautiful, other times I felt there was more negative space than there should've been, especially in a microverse like this.)

I feel like this would make for a better animated movie, it'd at least give the story the color I feel it deserves.

Very sapphic and very pretty.

Standalone manga about mushroom world, a newly married couple and young shepherd fighting for her wife.
I love the art and the worldbuilding, the plot is rather simplistic but it works for this story.
Also everybody is a lesbian and I love it.

The premise sounded so fun: court intrigue and enduring love in a world of sentient hermaphroditic mushroom people. Yes please. Unfortunately, not so fun in practice. Chapters are interrupted by pages of dry exposition on the history and culture of the fungus folk, the characters are just a handful of tropes, and the story plays out exactly as expected. I mean I'll give it an extra star for being about mushrooms but I never thought I'd say a fungal yuri was boring. Happy Earth Day I guess.

Cute one-volume love story of two young women in a world where fungi are dominant species. There are different kinds of fungi, some are similar to humans, others are more like cattle and so on. The society is ruled by queens in their territories and there are mushroomfolk specialized in different kinds of jobs the society needs (herders, scribes etc.).

The world-building is impressive for this short a story and it's a bit shame it wasn't longer because majority of the background info isn't told through the story but in a shroompedia articles between the chapters. On the other hand, you don't really need to know every detail Murayama has thought for the fungi world because in the core it's a love story and rescue mission which are fairly straightforward. So if you are happy with the information given in the story itself, you don't need to read the shroompedia bits to understand what's happening.

In the world of mushroomfolk, everybody is a female although they do use terms like husband and groom. There's fluidity to this too though, as told through a scene with a family where the siblings share parents but one is mother for elder sister and father to the younger. I think it would've been better to just use "mother" or neutral "parent" for everybody but it's still intriguing concept how families can be fluid like this.

Like said, the story is quite simple but it's sweet and I enjoyed this a lot. The art is nice. The scenes with forest landscape and fungi are very detailed but there's a lot of empty space in panels where the focus is on the characters talking, so it's quite a contrast. It didn't bother me but you notice it. Characters look nice and are fairly varied.

I love extensive world-building for fantasy worlds and I'm happy to read them even only as extra bits in-between the actual story, so I liked this a lot. And girl love is a bonus of course.

Man, I was really disappointed in this one. A whole world based on fungi? It had such potential, the art is nice and the world could’ve been so cool! But the storytelling is very weak, it’s very rushed, and parts are touched on but never fully fleshed out. This probably could’ve been fixed if it was a multi volume series instead of a one shot comic. But it’s a cute easy read, I would still probably skip it though.

Quick cute read, maybe half an hour. Adorable concept + illustrations! What you see on the cover is exactly what you get:) I wish there was more on the relationships backstory, and more interactions between the main characters, but since it's not a series it seems like it'd be hard to fit more into just one book. It definitely should've been a series imo-- there's a lot of inserts with explanations of different aspects of the way this mushroom world works, which was super helpful and interesting, but I think it's too complicated to fit the worldbuilding along with the story into just one book. I'd love it if it were a series with the first volume focusing on the character's relationship and more of a background on the mushroom world, and then it would have more time for us to get to know the characters and make sense of how the world works before getting into the plot. Then again, I have a super short attention span and wouldn't have picked it up if it was a series, so I'm kinda glad it's just the one book!! Even though the plot's a little rushed and hard to make sense of, it's still a very cute story with very cute illustrations, and it was nice to see lesbian relationships so normalized. Having all the characters be female makes it easier to see this as just a "normal" relationship, with the only adversity being the differing social statuses-- as a lesbian who loves to see lesbian representation, it's pretty refreshing to not have to read about the homophobia and real-world struggles involved with LGBT relationships. Other media with LGBT representation would seem kind of unrealistic if there was no adversity surrounding it, but the way this one is written (mushroom girls are the only humanoids to exist in this universe, so lesbian relationships are the only relationship option) takes that out of the equation entirely. It's just nice to see imo!! Long story short, if you're looking for something that "makes sense" and "is cohesive," look somewhere else, but if you're looking for mushroom girls being in love, this book's perfect for you:) (also, like I said, I have a very short attention span, so take this all with a grain of salt-- I'm pretty notorious for skipping dialogue and forgetting plot points, so it may just not make sense to me and my ADHD)

We thought this was going to be a lesbian love story based on the title, but they get married on page 1! They are husband and wife but both girls. Which is awesome. Everyone is a girl in this world, even the boys are also girls. But this is not a love story, it’s about geopolitical intrigue and conspiracies and plots and you have to read long text blocks of worldbuilding information. You would think a mushroom world where everything is a fungus and everyone is a lesbian would be a utopia given how much ink is spilled about Fungal Lifeways and Rhizomatic Modes Of Kinship or whatever Anna Tsing is going on about. Instead, this world is run by a bureaucratic monarchy, has a rigid caste system, people must wear ID stating their caste when leaving their tribal lands, there’s corruption and bribery afoot, oh and the central couple is looked down upon for being an inter-caste marriage. The plot is difficult to follow because most of the time is spent on explaining the world, there’s not much time for a story or for any character to have any personality traits. It reminded me of snugglepot and cuddlepie’s world a little, but while those two didn’t have differentiation between the two of them, they still had Traits. We read this out loud which we have never done with a manga before and it was funny to try and do the sound effects. The Shroom-pedia sections were so extensive that at a certain point we just had to hand each other the book to read individually in our heads because it was too tedious to read what sounds like a textbook out loud. We had fun, but I think this lovingly crafted world would have been better served by a multi volume format so the author could have the space for characters and plot that make us care to learn the lore of the world. It’s like if you read the Silmarillion without reading the Lord of the Rings.

Fungi girls, political intrigue, and action, all in a love story.

Two mushroom girls, Arriala the herder and Erriela the scribe, get married. What starts out as a marriage to tie tribes together in times of dwindling supplies turns into true love, but when a member of the Royal family of this all-woman planet is also in love with Erriela, she kidnaps her to become her wife! Arriala will use all of her skills and stop at nothing to get her loved one back in this single volume story.

This is a monster girl lover nerds dream! While the actual panels may not be too text heavy, between chapters there is "Shroom~pedia" that explains the different ways of the world and different techniques of how these girls/women live, along with the other fungi that inhabits the world. In the middle of the volume there is also a bonus Shroom~pedia special that describes the organisms and ecosystems of the world, the hierarchy of the planet and countries, currency, and how crimes are dealt with.

The art is absolutely stunning! The amount of detail in everything is amazing, right down to the different characters, who may look very similar to one another, but in this artist hands they are easily identifiable as long as you pay attention to details.

This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I loved the worldbuilding and sweet wholesomeness of this book. I really wish they'd make a second story set in this world.

This was really cute! I’m glad I picked it up on a whim in the clearance section at Barnes&Noble.:) ESPECIALLY considering how short this one-shot is, the worldbuilding is great. I honestly wasn’t expecting much seeing how low the average rating is here on GR. I do not understand why the average rating is so low at all, lol. The setting/premise of a world of all-female mushroom people is kind of weird, but in context, it’s fine and not illogical.

A very cute yuri manga that I think is quite underrated. I’ll give 4 stars because I do not think the details in all the artwork is very consistent. It doesn’t ruin the story by any means, but it could be better. I kinda felt that there was too much...negative space in some panels considering how tiny this microverse is? I don’t know how to explain it. Still, I really enjoyed it.

I am not sure how to rate this. I had wanted to read this for so long and after borrowing it from a friend (I finally gave it back to them today after having it for months), I am a bit disappointment.

With the premise being what it was, I was expecting a world and characters more fleshed out with a plot that was intriguing and engaging to follow.

I loved that it starting with a wedding and a kiss but after that that plot was confusing. I understood that someone of the Royal family wanted one of the girls for herself. but I was not quite sure what happened with that plot point.

The art was cute and I loved the cover, I just wish there was more. It had so much potential, but to be something quickly written, I would recommend it to people.
