First off I want to say how grateful I am to Adrienne Woods for writing this. I love getting the story from Blake's perspective!! I often wondered what was going on in that head of his. I fangirled a bit when I heard about this getting the story from his view.

Important to note: I HIGHLY advise reading the original novels with Elena first! Otherwise, this contains spoilers for several of those books. Sort of. Well, you can easily suspect and piece things together but still. The knowledge of this! Plus it is fun to watch certain scenes with a deeper understanding.
This is so much darker and heavier than the Dragonian novels. Lots of sex, violence and drugs which I wasn't a fan of. I expected some of it but not this much. And learning more about the viden, Irene, was the most shocking of all. Blake is mostly dark at this point. It is sad to see all he goes through to retain any good. And how others often push him further into darkness. I loved seeing how protective he was of Sammy however.
This was a bit lengthy and dragged at times. A lot of redundant thoughts. There was one line repeated used saying " I stroked my face hard" that seriously grated on me. You might rub your face hard, not stroke it! Blake might be stroking something else that I won't say here but yeah. And it was the same sentence! A stupid annoyance I know but still. Either a word or grammar change was needed badly for it. Still, I am eager to read part 2! I love these characters!

A very interesting point to be made is that in the case of POV-changes, the dialogue is the constant. It acts as a thread that connects two different minds. When you read the series from Elena's perspective you get a really different side of the coin. Even for a "Hello" the minds of the characters translate it differently. Elena would take it as greeting that should be followed by a discussion, Blake would probably see in it something sarcastic and ironic, that should be accompanied by a one-sided remark.

This novella tells the story before Elena's arrival to the Academy and what happened after she did, covering the adventures a little before the first book and until the end of it.

It is a fast paced novel, mainly built on dialogues and some side commentaries that are quite exciting if you had already read the main series.

Take care & stay safe.

To be honest this wasn't my cup of tea. There was nothing bad about it it just wasn't for me. I liked the fact that he needed a rider and the way he kept growing. The love triangle was a bit weird to get my head around but it kept parts interesting.

I loved the Dragonian series and I devoured book 1, “Moonbeam”, in the spin off series Beam. And when I found out that there would be a whole book from Blake’s POV i was so excited. Finally we where given the opportunity to learn more about the Rubicon, his feelings towards Elena and, of course, the darkness he has inside. So I couldn’t wait to start reading the book, my expectation high. And it was just as brilliant as I thought it would be. Mind, this not a YA story, there is a lot of cussing, mention of sex and Blake. Let’s just say....he is not a nice person or dragon. I wanted to slap him, throttle him, scream at him. But I also wanted to hug him, hold him, tell him to hold on. He is so dark and twisted and just not a likable person, at all. I think it is a good thing that this version, the Blake version, of the story about Pageia is published now, after we have got to know him as a loving, caring partner of Elena. And if you are reluctant to read this book because you think it’s the same old story of Elena & Blake, just seen with Blake’s eyes - be assured it’s not. Read it and you’ll see it is so much more and so special. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Fire Quill Publishing!

Love when an author gives you the backstory and the struggles of a main character. Explains more of what they have gone through to get where they are now.

I’ve had the pleasure of reading Adrienne Wood’s original adventure in Pageia—the Dragonian Series. I decided to review an advance copy of Darkbeam Part 1, to satisfy my curiosity: Would the Rubicon’s perspective meaningfully expand my experience in the world of Pageia? Yes, I have always been skeptical of retelling the same story from another point of view. Now that I have finished the book, several points of reflection stand out.

The dedication of the Rubicon’s Story is: “To everyone who wanted more”. My very first experience within this book was a smile—Adrienne Woods certainly knows her audience. Even before I began reading, I mentally noted this new installment was nearly 450 pages, which appropriately parallels the original novel “Firebolt”.

Mrs. Woods is consistent in her writing. True to expectation, this first installment of the Rubicon’s story contains occasional mistakes in grammar, syntax, and punctuation that will be familiar to anyone who has read other works of hers. These occasional infractions are, in my opinion, outweighed by the compelling, vivid nature of her characters and the big-picture vision she brings to the architecture of her narrative.

I was reminded of, and as a reader am grateful for, Mrs. Wood’s capacity for restraint in her writing. I have always been drawn in by the magic of her relationship with her characters—and she parents her characters and her readers with equal force—never letting either’s desire for gratification run ahead of the plot. Though I initially wondered if an alternate point-of-view project might be an exercise in wish-fulfillment, I was glad to be left wanting more.

I am also very glad to know that Blake’s—the Rubicon’s—point of view travels through the timeline of the story with independence from the Dragonian Series’s original perspective. I, the reader, was convinced that Mr. Blake Leaf was an individual with his own life, interests, concerns, problems, limitations, friends, and priorities: it was reassuring that Elena and her experiences did not appear on every page. Indeed, they did not appear on most pages. In fact, Mrs. Woods made Blake’s individual struggles so clear to me, I better understand why, in the timeline of the series, he is (for reasons of personal growth) the last character to “get with the program” and board the main plot thread of Elena’s destiny.

Overall, I am satisfied that reading this novel expanded my experience in the world of Pageia. I enjoyed the opportunity to consider a familiar story from a new perspective.

bring on more of the rubicon

Overall 5 out of 5 stars
Performance 5 out of 5 stars
Story 5 out of 5 stars

BRING ON PART 2. Need I say more. The dark fantasy with a dragon. The battel of Blake Leaf against the darkness that works hard to overtake him.

I have yet to read the Dragonian series, but after this one I will be heading back to read that series and book one from this series. I want to see where things began and how the progress. I am awaiting the follow up book for Darkbeam. I want to know more about Blake.

I am certain that once I have consumed the other series and the first book of this series. I will most certianly be back to listen Darkbeam Part 1 a second time.

The choice in narrator was a good one. I found that Kevin's portarila of the characters was alluring. He was dark when needed. Sick and twisted at the right times. The timing, inflections, diction, pitch and tone worked very well with the story unfolding.

Kudoos and high-fives for the writing, the depth of characters, the direction of the story, the background, the narration.

*****

He’s the Rubicon. He’s destined to either be one of light or succumb to the darkness. He needs a rider if he is to make it but the royal family was murdered. The King and Queen were murdered before they could produce an heir. Now, Blake battles every day with the darkness that grows within him. He’s fighting, but for how much longer can he hold out? This is his story.
Darkbeam Part 1: The Rubicon’s Story is a spinoff of Adrienne Wood’s Dragonian series. While I have not read the original Dragonian series, I found this book fascinating and overall easy to follow along with what was going on. The main character, Blake, is engaging throughout the entire story. He’s a strong and compelling character. The author does a fantastic job showing the reader how much Blake struggles with the darkness that is ever creeping in on him. He tries so many things to try and keep it at bay. He’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. He does what he feels he needs to do in order to stay sane. He crosses the line multiple times, but it keeps the reader engaged.
There isn’t much that I don’t like about this book. There are moments of where the author leaves things vague and doesn’t explain. While this bothers me it doesn’t detract from my enjoyment of the overall storyline.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I truly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next part of Blake’s story. If you’ve not read the original Dragonian series, I’d say that you don’t need to worry about missing something overall. I do intend to go and read the original series that ties into this spin-off. If you enjoy dark fantasy novels then I highly recommend you read this book. You won’t be disappointed.

There is darkness inside us all...but THE DARKNESS was awakening inside of Blake, consuming him, controlling him, and driving him to kill. Blake was losing control, as the beast began to take over his dragon-self, and the Rubicon grew in size, strength, and power. It was time for the claiming where Blake would discover who was strong enough and destined to become his rider. However, the beast did not want to be controlled, and was slowly taking over Blake's entire existence. A dream about a red-haired girl was the only thing that brought Blake any comfort. But who exactly was this girl?

I enjoyed the premise of the story; the play of light vs evil; love vs hate; weakness vs strength. However, I felt the story moved too slowly mostly due to the huge number of sexual scenes and encounters. Yes, teenagers are horny, and dragons are even hornier. But this was way overboard. I could have done without these gratuitous sex encounters, and wish the story had moved along a lot quicker. Almost made me feel that the author was just filling pages with the purpose of increasing the word count. And I hated feeling that way.

This was a fantastic series of dragon books. It's a lot like Harry Potter - if you love HP, you'll love this. The plot is somewhat complicated but was easy enough to follow and it was very well thought out. I loved the characters and the great blend of old world and new. I also loved that there are prequels and reverse POV books to the series as well. I have read every one of them!
I'm going to put this review on each book as I hope Ms. Woods will take notice - while I loved these books, the grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors were RIDICULOUS. I don't know who the editor is but it is unforgivable for them to not catch these errors. Maybe English is not Ms. Woods's native tongue but, regardless, a good editor should catch these errors. There is one at least every 5-6 pages and those are just the ones I saw. I thought maybe it had to do with the conversion to ebooks but I've noted other reviews on sites similar to Goodreads that say the same.
Ms. Woods - your books are fantastic. It's a shame for them to look amateurish because of the many many errors in every single book.
I gave these books a 4 star because of the many errors in every book.

🖤🖤ONE TUMULTUOUS WILD RIDE🖤🖤
Jumping jammies! Adrienne hit the ground running with this intense ground shaking rollercoaster, dishing out some horrifying facts, nerve racking choices and terrifying lessons, holding you prisoner from start to finish, skyrocketing this gem to staggering heights. Shattering the boundaries and dispensing the limits, laying out strong suits and short straws being weighed and balanced, bouncing this gem into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, slamming it into overdrive, launching it into a frenzy with a mind-blowing culmination. The characters, banter, dialogue, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, blend and flow adding depth and diversity, transforming into outstanding personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and graphic descriptions creating an elaborate backdrop that feels as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Adrienne, thanks for sharing this amazing thrill with us.

Blake is going down a dark path

Blake is destined for darkness, but maybe not all is as it seems. He's hiding things. This follows Blake’s path at Dragonia Academy.

Previous books deal with who he is and what he's going to do. This is about how he gets there, and covers some of the same storylines but from his perspective and shows what was really going on in his head.

I hadn't read any of the author's other books set in this world, so at times, I felt a little confused or like I was missing information. Overall, it didn't really matter much. It's a toss-up whether knowing the previous books' spoilers would enhance or detract.

The warning says this is a dark romance and not YA like the Dragonian Series. Other reviews complained about there being too much sex and dark tones. It didn't seem all that dark to me--more like a dark romance for YA/NA.

Getting everything from Blake’s perspective was enlightening but also frustrating. Honestly, it was quite the trial in patience. Blake is mostly dark at this point, and there is a lot of sex, violence, drugs and lying, to himself and others, which I wasn't a fan of. And truthfully, I kind of wanted him to be more… more mature, more “dragony “, more truthful with himself, more, more, more. Instead there was a lot of inner dialogue and depressive, repetitive, redundant thoughts about how big and bad he was, how evil he was, how much he didn’t care, which made the storytelling through Blake’s viewpoint frustrating and pathetic. He didn’t really have a personality and came off really flat and sad, which I guess was the intention, I mean he is dark. I also feel bad for him, since he is afraid of reaching for help and the help he is offered is pitiful.

Reader be forewarned, this is a dark and grisly story by Adrienne Woods about all the ways the Rubicon tries to avoid the darkness that is supposedly foretold to be his ordained destiny. There are many physical battles which are described in all their grisly and gory detail. There is also a lot, and I mean a lot of sex, but it is primarily described in general terms rather than detail. This book, even though it is about a rather dark existence for its main character was very enjoyable to read as the other characters' personalities came out and interacted with each other. I also liked the third person narrative, as it was a welcome change in storytelling. This is a very very late voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Booksprout.

Rated 4.5 stars due to slight grammatical errors; fortunately, they do not distract from the story.

Overall, Darkbeam, Part I was absolutely fantastic!!

Darkbeam is in Blake's POV. I absolutely loved this read. Can't wait for Part II. Adrienne Woods never disappoints. The characters are the same but the focus is on Blake and his demons. We get to see the struggles he go through pre- and post-Elena. You definitely get a more in-depth look of the Viden and Tabitha. This book should be on the top of any Fantasy reader's booklist!!

Young, self-assured, half human, half dragon, fighting the dark side.
This is a tale of a young man fighting with his inner demons of good and evil. Blake believes that his destiny of darkness is waiting for him and he tries to find ways to avoid that destiny. This fantasy is a page turner with the adventures of Blake who is so self-destructive that it appears that he will destroy himself. His mind games are amazing. He is the “bad” boy. Read to see what happens to Blake and his self-destructive ways.

So Blake wrote a song called "Never-Breath" about someone he thought he'd never have. Has anyone ever heard the song "My Never" by Blue October? This reminds me of that.
The only reason I can't give 5stars is because of the editing. Grammar and punctuation is a struggle for me in every single book, maybe it's just the Kindle editions, I don't know. I have to figure out on my own what sentences are supposed to say through each book. But the story is actually good enough to keep me going, which is not something that happens in books with many errors, and this book has way more than other books I've stopped reading because of editing.

This book was the first for me by this author and I did enjoy it though I thought it was a little slow in parts. The characters were well rounded and did keep the story going overall. The darkness of this was a bit overwhelming at times and I though I did enjoy the book being fantasy nerd I would have like some relief from it here and there especially with the pandemic going on right now. Probably not a good time to read a book like this for me. However if you like a dark book with a sexy dragon this book is for you.

Blake has only a small hope that he can bet the darkness in him, for more often than not a Rubicon dragon has the darkness over take them. He considers his dragon as more of a beast than part of him, because of how it demands dark deeds to satisfy it's growing needs. Can he one of the few Rubicon dragons to not turn dark? Will he have someone to claim him? And if he does will they just make it worse? I loved tormented Blake, who almost seems to jump out from the pages, and I look forward to the next book in this dark, but gripping tale.

First stating. I have read the entire series. I received the first book free for my honest review. It's an okay book with a great world that was created bu the delivery could be be so much better. I felt many heartbreaks with this series with the amount of deaths taken place. The storyline is fine. Has mystery. Adventure. Love. It's just that Blake is an annoying character for me. I just think the way he is portrayed is mechanical. The book itself is good I just don't personally like Blake and the way he is written. Would recommend the book itself.

I devoured the Dragonian series and so excited to finally get a chance to understand Blake’s side of the story. There are many layers to this Rubicon, Blake Leaf and relieved to know his conscience was still there…buried deep down. Makes my heart go pitter patter all over again.
Can’t wait to learn more about this misunderstood creature and fall in love all over again.
Although reading the Dragonian series is helpful, it is not necessary to dive into this new series.

Dark Beam. Definitely a dark fantasy.

This is an exciting start to the series. I've come late to it.
Blake Leaf is not just a student he's also a dragon. Not just any dragon but a very special dragon with a Destiny, which if he doesn't fulfill it, he will turn evil.

Lots of unexpected twists to this one , and I don't suppose it's anything like that which you would be expecting.

If you must read reviews read other people's, I'm just going to say go buy the book it's worth it.

I have been waiting to see things through Blake's eyes for so long, and was not disappointed! It was an eye opener to see his internal struggle, and at times really felt his pain and conflict. It gave me a new respect for him and I cannot wait for part 2. This book made me laugh and cry, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Ms. Woods writing.

With the rest of the Dragonian Series under my belt, it was awesome to read this from Blake's perspective and to live the story through him. It really adds to what I already knew and loved from the overall series! What's even better is that if you haven't read the Dragonian Series yet, you can still read this and not be lost.

On to DarkBeam Part 2!!

This is a very intense and dark book. If you are looking for romance you won’t find it in this one, but I have a feeling some extremely intense changes will take place in the next book. The story is written exclusively through the view of Blake. He is a dragon shifter that has a darkness in him. The darkness is taking him over and he finds several ways to tame it for a moment. He uses killing, sex and drugs but even those aren’t enough. Definitely no happily ever after sin his near future.

P.O.V from Blake is very insightful.

I have always loved series that have the P.O.V from other characters. Reading Darkbeam allowed me to understand Blake a bit more but I still think he is a ass. Can't wait to read part 2 and see how he keeps fighting both Elena and his dark side.
