Actually, I just read the Queens Fool, the single paperback novel. Not your traditional Tudor maiden and not your typical story line. I couldn't put it down.
I absolutely loved this book. I will now have to read her other books. I am not one to enjoy period novels but my goodness can she write. It was the perfect balance of history, relationships and action! A wonderful page turner that was was wonderfully written! Phillipa has a new fan!
I have learned so very much. I cried. I was moved, saddened, terrified. What a dreadful person Henry was! What a dark period of history! I especially enjoyed the audiobook of ‘The Boleyn Inheritance’ in which the voicings were spot on!
Amazing how families are ruthless and loveless to their own blood. And how the women waited and had been belittled in hopes to be chosen. Glad I live in modern times with modern inventions. Always loved the era, but had no idea. She puts in a great deal of research.
Loved it. All the books show how women were at the mercy of others, and if they had the audacity to plot their own course, they were persecuted. The books make you happy to be a woman at a time when we have been empowered to make our own destinies.
I Enjoyed the other Boleyn girl. This book started me on my current interest in English historical fiction in particular Tudor history.
I must say though her other books are ok rather than great. When you read her books too much you tend to spot certain biases she has- fir eg, she consistently portrays queen Elizabeth as vacuous and vampish. She is entitled to her view of course, just that I find it rather one dimensional .
Also I realize she seems to venerate women who prefer staying home to raise kids loyally waiting for their husbands over independent and ambitious women, again a view she is entitled to but I don't subscribe to.
Having said that, there is no denying her books and fun to read and hard to put down:)
I haven't read all the books in this set yet, but I did read 'The Other Boleyn Girl' which was really gripping (loved the movie, it was just the same as the book, to me anyhow) and 'The Bolyne Inheritance. The latter I just finished yesterday and to say I was enthralled with it is putting it mildly. A taut tale from 3 viewpoints of 3 highly different women who are caught in the web of King Henry the VIII's court and all it's machinations. To those readers who love this historical era, Philippa Gregory will never disappoint.
These were fun books to read. Although I seem to like anything about British culture. I didn't know I would like historical fiction. I can't say that I had a favorite out of all of them. I even read them out of order and it was fine; they are really stories on their own, you don't need to read one to understand the others.
Please see my reviews for 'The Constant Princess', 'The Other Boleyn Girl', 'The Boleyn Inheritance', 'The Queen's Fool', 'The Virgin's Lover', and 'The Other Queen'.
Enjoyed reading these books I couldn't stop reading I was captivated by every page I turned so many sleepless nights because I wanted to finish the full series.
