Lieutenant Sam Holland and her team of detectives are up against a cold blooded killer this time who is indiscriminately selecting victims for deadly drive-by shootings. It's a tough and heartbreaking case given the absence of connections between the murder victims and their innocence.
the heart of the story…
I really enjoyed this story as there is a perfect balance between the case procedurals, issues relating to other secondary characters, family drama, romance and Sam's duties as the Second Lady. Absent is the normal tug-of-war between Sam and security that I've found troubling in past stories (thank goodness!). The story is well paced and moves seamlessly from scene to scene. And, there were many light-hearted moments amidst the death and chaos.

Eva Kaminsky nails each character (I actually love her interpretation of Freddie) and delivers an outstanding performance.
the bottom line…
I'm still loving this series and like how some of the outstanding issues were advanced in this story. There are still challenges to face going forward, especially as it relates to Nick’s political career.

How can a series get better with each book????
Marie Force’s Fatal series has been a highlight of my reading experience. There are only a few authors that can manage such a feat – like JD Robb and Ilona Andrews. With each book my love for this series grows exponentially. If you love romantic suspense you NEED to read this series. It’s a MUST for every fan of JD ROBB, and for everyone that loves a strong romantic couple that is beyond fabulous and kicks ass.
This series features one of the BEST kickass heroine that is not afraid to go the extra mile. Sam is in a class on her own. She is the BOMB. Dedicated, loyal, with a bone deep integrity that shines through everything she does.
Besides writing superbly, Marie Force manages to write police procedure and cases that are raw, emotional and chilling. She puts her cast through the wringer, just for them to come out at the other side tougher, more dedicated and committed than ever before. Her characters are relatable, genuine, and easily one of the best groups of people I had the pleasure of reading about.
Sam is a heroine that strikes a perfect balance between a kickass police lieutenant who also is a wife and mother, sister, daughter, partner, boss and friend. Sam is my kind of heroine. I adore her, love her and just admire her. Her relationship with her team at the Metro Police is a highlight of each book. Her team is beyond loyal, devoted and committed to their lieutenant. And their friendships are what makes each case so extremely addicting. There is nothing these group of police officers would not do for each other.
And then there is Sam and Nick – the ultimate couple. There is so much teasing, love, and attraction between them. Their love for each other ignites the pages. And best of all, their marriage is based on unwavering loyalty and trust – something that I adore immensely. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of those two. They are incomparable. A couple for the ages. I believe with all my heart that this cast and these characters are the BEST Marie Force has ever written. Sam and Nick grew into a couple that becomes stronger with each book. I’m impressed by the author’s skill.
I also admire that the author does not pull any punches, she writes addicting storylines, superbly executed, with twists and turns around every corner. I’m beyond amazed by her plotting skills.
I could go on and on. There is NOTHING I don’t love about this series. I just hope the author will continue writing, because this series is far from over. Every single book is amazing, gripping, and captivating. Marie Force created a series that stands out, and many romantic suspense series pale in comparison.

My Review:
Fatal Chaos was my perfect read with a good cross-section of suspense, sizzle, clever humor, a sexy and supportive loving couple, compelling and likable characters, a well-crafted and unpredictable storyline, and excellent writing. It was superb from start to finish, even if one of the main characters was a politician – but this is how you know you are reading fiction since he wasn’t a self-serving and egotistical weasel. I adored the snappy dialogue, and highly amusing verbal sparring and irreverent bickering Sam engaged in with her husband, partner, son, and father. They each held their own and gave as good as they got. There were multiple storylines going at once, all were actively engaging, busy, and highly interesting. The random and vexing crime spree was heartbreaking yet realistic, relevant, and one I could not have solved. I love when that happens!

I don't know what happened, but this was really weak!
The crime was really heart wrenching because all those people's lives ruined, but to me it wasn't the focal point of the book, but just an afterthought! And the villain and the solution was fortuitous and not the result of an investigation.
During the whole book we get snippets of various moments that have nothing to do with the investigation. The whole team runs from one crime scene to the other doing the same: consoling the victim's family, asking the same questions, visiting the morgue on return to the HQ... and what was the result? Nothing whatsoever!
Sam and Nick are still in love (and lust) as the first time and it's nice to know, I won't deny it, but I was rolling my eyes at the umpteenth time the jump each other's bones! Yes, I'm shocked too!
Also all the other couples are incredibly perfect, even with their problems that have always a very predictable solution. If only things could be solved so simply also in real life!!!
I think that politics is a very dirty game, but here they are all saints! They're all just too perfect!
The only parts I've enjoyed it the banter between Sam and Freddie!
I'm going to read the next and see if something different happens and if not I'll stop reading this series!

After a relaxing weekend at the beach with family, Lt. Sam Holland gets called back to work. A teenager was shot and killed on the street. Witnesses claim that a dark SUV turned the corner, and someone shot Jamal Jackson in the head. As Sam and her team investigate, they are told about a second drive-by shooting of a woman across town. When a third seemingly random shooting happens later that night, Sam knows they got their work cut out for them to find a killer.
This was a tough one. How do you find a killer when physical evidence is scarce, and the victims have nothing to do with one another? The cops were busy going from one crime scene to another, questioning witnesses who really have nothing to tell. I didn't know how they would solve this one.
Along with the police investigation, we had Vice President Nick Cuppuano wondering if he would have to testify in the Senate hearing concerning what the President knew about his son's crimes. Nick doesn't want to become President under these circumstances and knows that Sam doesn't either. On other fronts, Sam is harassing Freddie about his bachelor party, and Avery is talking to a therapist about his problems at home. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

Solid writing and good plots are what I have come to expect from the books in this series. I am still not a Sam fan, but I love Nick, and he loves her, so I can tolerate her. This time, she does get banged up and only causes Nick more than a couple hours of anxiety. I am amazed that the plots seem to be ripped from the headlines, but with their own special twist.
Nick, Sam and the family escapes to the shore for a week of down time, but all good things must come to an end and Sam catches the case of a drive by shooting that turns into six dead and the city on lockdown. With the fall out of the actions President's son comes some hard decisions for Nick and Sam, decisions neither of them wants to face.

Over the top but fascinating storyline and good enough to mostly overlook the coincidences and improbabilities. Emotional, hard-hitting, and oddly realistic despite being over the top. Good to see Sam having consequences for her actions and her finally maturing. Also, I *loved* Freddie and Elin's bachelor party. Perfect. I love the secondary characters but I wish we saw Jeannie do more than just comfort rape survivors. Force has turned her into a one trick pony. Despite the rape and abuse Force put her through, Jeannie is bland. Which isn't to say that trauma should make you interesting
Rather, Force is using it as a short cut for character development. If she isn't willing to put in the work to add depth to Jeannie's character, then write the character out but keep her alive and unharmed. Force has abused and neglected her quite enough.

This was an out-of-the-ballpark winner, imo.
I've read this series from the first release, so it feels like I'm getting together with good friends.
I love Sam when she's with Nick.
I equally love her when she's in police mode with her homicide squad, and particularly her banter with Cruz.
The story had me laughing out loud in some places and tears streaming in others.
The myster in this story was tricky to solve, and I really enjoyed reading about the progress, inch-by-inch, that the homicide square took to find the killers.
If you haven't read any of the Fatal Series, then start with Book 1, Fatal Attraction.
If you like romantic suspense/police procedurals, then this series is definitely for you.

It's good to see some resolution with Nick's situation. Sam's new case is a bad one though and the way she's accumulating enemies within the police department...not good.
I'm still worried about Gonzo but did enjoy seeing the other couples progressing. This was an action-packed addition to the series and thoroughly enjoyable.

Number 12 is pure genius! I could not stop reading and never figured out the ending until the author chose the time to reveal. Jam-packed with ALL the best of feel-goods and thrills and chills. Sam and Nick at their best! FATAL CHAOS has closed in on the top slot in this favorite series for me.
Bad news -- Won't be released until 2018. But believe me, it will be worth the wait!

4 political rock stars for FATAL CHAOS!
What did President David Nelson know, and when did he know it? After his son's scheme against VP Nick Cappuano and his family, there's a damn good chance that Nick could be taking up residence in the Oval sooner rather than later. His wife, Metro PD Lieutenant Sam Holland, helped end the chaos of the scandal, but now that impeachment or resignation seems like a real possibility, Nick and his family are gearing up for some rocky days ahead. Making things 10,000 times worse, DC is in the midst of a serial killer picking off random residents one by one. It's summer in DC, but Sam will need to stay cool and keep her head if she's going to catch the killers before more people wind up dead.
FATAL CHAOS is book 12 in the Fatal series by Ms. Force, but it's the first I've had the pleasure of reading. I felt like I was coming in blind for a good portion of the book, not knowing the characters or the setting of the book, and while eventually I got a feel for the major players, I'd recommend maybe picking up a few of the other books to get a head start. Sam…damn I love Sam. What a badass chick! Not only is she the second lady, she's a police Lieutenant, a survivor and someone who can take (and give) a punch like Mike Tyson. And VP hubby Nick..I can only hope that some day we'll have a young, good looking and progressive VP who can inspire the country. I liked all of the characters, I liked the storyline and I even liked the secondary stories that shot off from the primary one. I'll definitely pick up more books in this fast-paced series!

FATAL CHAOS is a really fitting title for this installment of the series because, except for a brief respite at the beginning, the entire story is one of fast moving, thrilling action and drama. The fallout from the events of the previous book continues unabated, with things heating up on Capitol Hill and the President mired in scandal, Sam facing potential legal jeopardy but even worse are the drive-by shootings which have left D.C. paralyzed with terror.
Sam does what she's best at: protecting her city, but she also has to deal with the potential changes that could happen in her personal and family life at the same time. Will Nick be ready and willing to step to the task of leading the country, if needed? Will Sam have to leave her job because of the changes that could happen in her life?
This book is as exciting as the previous ones in the series and Sam and Nick are still in love and as adorable as ever. Sam's harder edges have mellowed out and her personal circle is growing as her team becomes more like family, but she's still herself when it comes to the job, kicking ass and taking names.
I also enjoyed that many of the secondary characters got more page time, keeping us up to date on the happenings in their life and I look forward to more in this series.

Will Nick be ready and willing to step to the task of leading the country, if needed? Will Sam have to leave her job because of the changes that could happen in her life?
This book is as exciting as the previous ones in the series and Sam and Nick are still in love and as adorable as ever. By far my favorite book of the series.

I read the first two books in this series (Fatal Affair and Fatal Justice) a couple of years ago. I always intended to go back, but couldn’t seem to get a round tuit. So when Fatal Chaos came up on my radar, in spite of it coming ten books after my first foray in this series, I decided to see if I could pick this Washington DC power couple back up where I left off, without reading the intervening books in the series.
And it turns out that I could. And that they remind me even more of an early 21st century Dallas and Roarke than they did upon earlier reading. And that’s still marvelous company to be solving crimes in.
(And yes, I realize that’s an awful lot of ANDS.)
There’s enough backstory to get new or new-ish readers right into the action. Sam Hollands is a Detective Lieutenant with the slightly fictional DC Metro Police Department. Her husband, Nick Cappuano, who was a senator’s chief of staff when first we met our heroes, has moved up in the world, mostly reluctantly. Nick is now Vice-President, after a series of deaths and scandals not dissimilar to the way he became Senator in the first place.
Nick is VP the same way that Gerald Ford was, or perhaps the way that Nelson Rockefeller was, albeit a whole lot better looking than either. He was appointed by the President after the office was vacated mid-term. I think I remember that the President who appointed Nick was also appointed rather than elected, hence the reference to Nelson Rockefeller, the appointed VP of an appointed P.
Come to think of it, this series also begins with a scandalous crime at the Watergate. Hmmm.
But as seems to always be the case with this series, Nick and Sam are under a lot of pressure, both separately and together. The President is in big trouble over the events in Fatal Threat. His son was on a murderous campaign to get Nick and Sam out of the way. Even though said son was well into adulthood, the press and the Democratic Party are having a difficult time believing that he knew nothing of what his son was up to. Impeachment is on the horizon, something that Nick and Sam dread possibly even more than the President does.
Nick isn’t sure he wants to ever be President, and he’s dead certain he doesn’t want to be President right now. Sam is absolutely sure that she doesn’t want to be First Lady, which will require her to have a Secret Service detail and force her to give up her career as a homicide detective.
Speaking of homicide, the case that Sam and her department are desperate to solve involves what initially appear to be a series of random drive-by shootings. However, those shootings are so accurate that the squad can only locate one person capable of committing the crime – a retired Metro PD sharpshooter who has been missing during the entire crime spree.
So Sam has to do what Sam does best – see just how many of her brothers and sisters in blue she can royally piss off before she catches the killers. All while burying her head in the sand over all the other threats to her life and happiness that loom on the horizon.
Escape Rating B+: When I read the first two books in this series, I said then that they were reading crack, and I’ll stand by that description. They are excellent reading crack. I finished this one in an evening, because I couldn’t put it down.
Sam and Nick are marvelous protagonists. They have found true love in the midst of extreme chaos, are not the least bit shy about showing it, and absolutely refuse to let it go, no matter what.
But there are an awful lot of those “whats” in their life together.
The big elephant in the room is the possibility that Nick might become President, with all of the changes that will cause in their life. Sam, like Eve Dallas in the In Death series, was made to be a cop. While there is a possibility that some day she might be willing to give up being a homicide detective, she is relatively young and that day is definitely not yet. It’s pretty obvious that it will kill an important part of her if she has to stop. So the threat to their happiness is very real, and hangs over most of the story.
The immediate problem is Sam’s case. Someone is killing at random, including children. Nothing seems to link the victims. But the method of the crime begins to narrow down the possibilities, and that’s where Sam gets herself in trouble. Again.
There’s a long history of some of Sam’s colleagues resenting her for her relatively quick rise through the ranks. And an unfortunate history of those same resentful colleagues exhibiting the kind of behavior that gets them thrown off them force, usually after Sam discovers what they’ve been up to. She’s already dealing with two different past incidents during this book, and at least two more crop up. Sam’s a busy woman, and does not let anything stand in her way when she’s on a case, not even the demands of her own body to get some rest after more than 24 hours on duty.
She’s certainly not about to let a philandering detective or an overly cautious commander protecting an old friend get in her way – not that she won’t pay for both of those incidents later, in another book.
And a big part of what makes this book and series so good, and also deepens the resemblance to the In Death series, is the way that Sam’s squad has developed into a terrific unit of friends as well as colleagues, and the way that they always have each other’s backs, especially hers.
While Sam may be the star, in the end it’s the team and their teamwork that solve the case. And that’s awesome.
I suspect that for readers who have kept up with the entire series, there is a lot more depth in the scenes that focus on the team and their friends and loved ones, as there are clearly lots of looks back at previous books and previous couples who have found their HEAs within Sam and Nick’s orbit. But even without having that deep background, and in spite of all the curveballs and crises that life keeps throwing Sam and Nick’s way, this is still a terrific piece of romantic suspense.
I’m looking forward to going back for more.

In this installment, Sam and Nick are being hounded by the fallout from the President's son trying to force the Cappuano's out of his political way while at the same time Sam tries to save her beloved city from a drive-by murderer. Sam is up to her eyeballs in dead bodies, suspects and jealous, angry men in her own department. But as always, Sam handles everything with her own version of grace and charm. Her snark, temper, and loyalty make it impossible to not wanting Sam to catch her man, woman or whoever happens to be the bad guy in this particular book.
In typical Fatal fashion, the book is full of sexy times between Sam and Nick but equally packed with the suspense I've come to love with this series. Marie Force always seems to keep this series on the pulse of the current political and social climate. Her writing and these characters make it impossible to put the book down until the very end.

I've read most of this series, and often times I wind up comparing it to the In Death series, and not in a good way. However, this story was actually very interesting! It was good to see the progression on with the cast of characters, and the emotional upheavals that they endured. The case was interesting, but seemed very implausible when the ending was revealed. Overall, I found this to be a quick and easy read and hope that the next book is just as interesting as this one was!

Not my favorite in the series, still, there is nothing wrong with this book at all. I still love the characters and I'm completely drawn into their struggles of dealing all the trauma in the past few books. I love the new detective. I'm hoping there will be more there. My biggest complaint is that perhaps there could have been more to the actual mystery. It felt a little light.

Fatal Threat

A series of random drive-by shootings has Lieutenant Sam Holland and her team racing against the clock to locate the perpetrators before they strike again.
Series note: Due to the ongoing character arcs, the books in this series should be read in order.
The investigation into the snipers is compelling and is reminiscent of the DC Sniper case. Unfortunately, it is undermined by several obvious plot holes. To begin with, the alleged motive is weak - . Second, the idea that a is completely nonsensical. Finally, the behavior of the various police officers in this series is getting worse. Aside from Sam and her unprofessional conduct, there is . The Chief has obviously lost control of his people, and someone needs to come in to clean the house ASAP!
In terms of the characters, the Avery, Shelby, Sam triangle is finally being put to rest. However, the revelation that Avery's obsession is because Sam lacks foundation and is more than a little strange. There are also updates on Freddie and Elin, and of course, Nick and Sam deal with the dilemma of the President's knowledge of his son's actions. The addition of Cameron Green to the homicide division is no surprise. It looks like he will be a good fit.
All in all, this is an improvement on some of the more recent books in the series. Hopefully, the trend will continue.

The Fatal series is one of the best in this genre and rather unique. Most romantic suspense series are based around something like a police force, security company, military team or something similar with each book featuring a different couple. This series is all about the same couple as they progress in their relationship and careers. I like it.
Sam is a homicide lieutenant now, and Nick is vice president of the United States. I enjoyed Fatal Chaos much more than the previous one. Sam's attitude and actions seemed much more realistic. Nick seemed less present, as did their families. Since Fatal Threat had lots of family time this isn't surprising. I love Sam's dad, Skip, and also her interactions with her team.
I did not enjoy the side stories with Avery and Shelby in Fatal Threat. I wasn't completely interested in their story in Fatal Chaos, but this time made more sense. Personally, I would have liked more Skip, Nick and Scotty and less page time with them.
I liked the police procedures in solving their cases, the connection and dialogue with the team, and the political issues which Nick faced. Both Sam and Nick had some choices to make and things to learn. I continue to want more of this couple and their family and friends. I'm excited about Fatal Invasion to be released in November 2018!

Phew!
As usual, there's all kinds of excitement going on in Sam and Nick's personal and professional lives--400+ pages of high-drama, high-intensity excitement. It hardly feels like it's that long, though, because with all that's going on--along with some very sweet and sexy times between Sam and Nick, and some touching ones with Scotty and their extended friend and family groups--it's near impossible to put this book down until you're done. Nick's literally unable to relax into his job as VPOTUS (not that it's relaxing at the best of times, but there's a few extra layers of stress in Nick's case), the bodies that Sam has to deal with are literally starting to pile up, and that's just the beginning...
(We were warned several times not to give spoilers--let me apologize right now for the vagueness!)
Though you could probably read this as a standalone, readers who've read the other books in the series will have a better sense of shared history and the book will have more impact if you've read the rest of the series--past events, especially those in the book immediately prior ( Fatal Threat ), effect things that happen here. If it's been a while (or like me, you've somehow missed the last one) you do find out the basics of what you need to going forward, but there's a good chance that just finding out the minimum will make you all that more anxious to read the previous book(s) yourself and witness it all first hand.
But at least it will give me something to do while I was for #13! ;)

Fatal Chaos has all the elements that have made the other books in the series keepers—a central romantic relationship that continues to be dynamic and meaningful, intriguing bits of national politics and power struggles, a mystery that keeps me turning pages, and a complex of secondary characters whose stories, personal and professional, are interwoven with the main plot. If you enjoy contemporary romance with a high sensuality level, if you like romance mixed with action, or if you are a fan of mysteries in which continuing relationships are as important as the plot, I recommend Fatal Chaos. It can be read as a standalone, but readers who are familiar with the series will more fully appreciate all the familial, collegial, and friendship ties that are part of the book’s appeal. I suggest reading at least Fatal Threat, the book that immediately preceded this one, if the political threat interests you. I’m already looking forward to Fatal Invasion, a November 27 release.

Markedly better than the previous book. I actually enjoyed the police procedural parts this time around, but the resolution was a little too neatly wrapped up for my taste. I still believe Sam's investigative skills are totally overrated, but with her not waging war with the Secret Service and balking about her 2nd Lady duties, she was more tolerable this time around....and a lot funnier!!!
As usual the best part of this series is all of the personal relationships, and they were front and center. Sam & Nick couldn't keep their hands off each other (I was actually surprised by all of the sexy times), Scotty is growing up, Avery & Shelby are finally back on track, and Freddy & Elin are gearing up for their wedding. There is a new couple and a new detective in Sam's squad adding even more wonderful possibilities that I'm looking forward to see play out.

3.5 stars. Why? I really enjoy this romantic suspense series of Nick and Sam. I've read them all and this is #12. They are addictive.
Plot. In this one there are a number of drive by shootings and Sam and her team are out to find out who it is before more people are mowed down. Nick is dealing with the possibility of seeing the President stepping down and Nick being asked to step up. As well a few side stories of developments for ongoing characters.
What Appeals to Me? I enjoyed the fun winding up by Sam with her partner - Cruz, as she prepares his night out before his wedding. I liked the ongoing story of Nick and his job and Sam's desire to become pregnant. But I'd like to see developments! Evidently I won't get them because it wouldn't suit the possible plots!
And so... I'll certainly look forward to #13 coming out later in 2018 and will definitely read it, although for me this one just didn't give the buzz I have come to expect from this series. Then again, could just have been my reading mood at the time.
Plot. In this one there are a number of drive by shootings and Sam and her team are out to find out who it is before more people are mowed down. Nick is dealing with the possibility of seeing the President stepping down and Nick being asked to step up. As well a few side stories of developments for ongoing characters.
What Appeals to Me? I enjoyed the fun winding up by Sam with her partner - Cruz, as she prepares his night out before his wedding. I liked the ongoing story of Nick and his job and Sam's desire to become pregnant. But I'd like to see developments! Evidently I won't get them because it wouldn't suit the possible plots!

I burned through this one in less than a day. A tense mystery that had me snifflng several times along with a political subplot with high personal stakes. As always the relationship between Sam and Nick is a highlight. The dialogue is wonderful. The scene with Sam, Nick and Scotty in the ER was hysterical.
Quibble: The resolution of the mystery bothered me a bit. SO SERIOUS SPOILERS FOLLOW PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK (Also if someone could tell me how to hide a portion of the review, that would be great.)
I just don't buy the forced-to-kill (and forced to other crimes) scenario. IMO some of the guilt (not all, but some) still falls on the forcees. They still chose to do what they did. Especially the killing of the child. I would rather die myself, and the threat to the forcees loved one wasn't strong enough to justify it.

5 Star Review of Fatal Chaos (Fatal # 12) by Marie Force
Since this is book 12 in the series, there is always the concern that the books could get repetitive, however in my opinion this is not the case.
Although this is book 12 in the series, I do not believe that anyone new to these books would have trouble following the story, however I would encourage you to go back and read the previous books as and when you have time.
This was one of those books I was riveted to from start to finish, I didn't want to put it down as I found myself saying just one more chapter, Nick and Sam are so well suited to each other and their love continues to grow whilst living complicated and at times dangerous lives.
This book did not touch on their family and friends as much as previous books, however Ms.Force still manages to give you not only a book full of twists and turns but the heat and sizzle between Nick and Sam was scorching.
You will be drawn into not only their story, but those of their family and friends, as such is the skill of Ms.Force you cannot help but become invested in all of the characters. I always love catching up with Sam, Nick and Scotty and their extended family.
Fatal Chaos is full of romance, danger, suspense, humour and plenty of complications to keep you guessing to the end. In fact Scotty is one of my favourite characters in this series as he grapples to deal with being Nick and Sam’s son and the headaches of being a teenager surrounded by the secret service.
Fatal Chaos is another great addition to one of my favourite series from Marie Force. I cannot wait to read the next in the series which I believe is Fatal Invasion which releases late 2018
