THE MAN SHE HATES TO LOVE

Beckett King just inherited his father's fortune, his company-and all his enemies. If he's going to stay on top, he needs someone he can trust beside him. And though they've been rivals for years, there's no one he trusts more than Samara Mallick.

The rebel. That's how Samara has always thought of Beckett. And he's absolutely living up to his unpredictable ways when he strides into her office and asks for help. She can't help wondering if it's a legit request or just a ploy to get her into bed. Not that she'd mind either one. After all, she likes to live on the edge too.

But soon the threats to the King empire are mounting, and the two find family secrets darker than they ever imagined and dangerous enough to get them both killed.

You know that feeling, when you open a book by an author you've never read before and the first couple of sentences give you that security that the writing style is exactly down your alley. This is what happenend when I started The Last King by Katee Robert. She has an effortless flow in her writing that makes it a pleasure to read.

Beckett King is heir to the Morningstar empire. His father just passed away and something about the way he died just doesn't sit right with him. The future of the empire he inherited is now in his hands, a job he has been preparing for all his life. The company competing with Morningstar Enterprise for supremacy is Kingdom Corp, run by his aunt and while Beckett might be connected by blood to her blood doesn't make a family.

Samara Mallick works for Kingdom Corp and short of being top management she has come a long way. She frequently comes head to head with Morningstar's prince when both compete for bids but that rivalry only enhances their explosive sexual chemistry. And after getting a taste of the delicious man she never can quite forget him.

All her competition and desire was mirrored back at her in that kiss, his tongue sliding against hers as they both fought for dominance. Each move had a corresponding response as if they were dancing— or fighting.

While Samara comes across prickly, often times downright bitchy, give her a chance. There is a huge learning curve and growth coming her way and while she struggles with all the knowledge she gains; when Samara and Beckett become close she starts trusting the man she's falling in love with fast.

She has never had it easy - her father was a weak man and left her mother when she was pregnant with Samara. She doesn't want to repeat her mother's past so more than a little tumble in the sheets doesn't even cross her mind. It would be disastrous to hope for more when there is such an imbalance of power between them. I understood where Samara was coming from although her tenacity sometimes made me grind my teeth. And this is what Katee Robert did right and where many authors fail: She showed me Samara's change from a snappy, distant character to a lovely, devoted young woman. In the end I loved Samara so much.

God, her heart ached for him. He’d lost so much, and he just kept moving forward, barely missing a step.

Daddy issues is what Samara and Beckett have in common. After his mother passed away Beckett never saw eye to eye with his old man but now he realizes that he completely alone for the first time in his life. My heart broke a little for him. He is cocky, strong-willed, responsible with a fiercely protective streak. He takes Samara's worries and her career seriously and always acts in her best interest. Beckett is a charismatic, endearing and wonderful male character I couldn't help but fall in love with along with Samara. I loved his heart.

“I don’t give a fuck what the world throws at us. I’m keeping you, Samara.”

I love when authors educate their readers in an entertaining manner and Katee Robert won my ever-lasting devotion with this little dialogue between Samara and Beckett.

“What I wanted most in the world when I was in kindergarten was to be a trainer at SeaWorld.”
“Orcas or dolphins?”
He loved that she asked it with a straight face. Beckett answered just as seriously. “Orcas, of course. My mother took me there one weekend and I was convinced that the trainers were magic. It seemed like the most amazing thing in the world for them to work with such massive, majestic creatures.” He made a face. “That was before I grew up enough to realize what a tragedy it is to keep those animals in captivity.”
Samara pressed her lips together. “You donate to PETA, don’t you?”
“I can’t abide by some of their policies.” When she just stared, he huffed out a breath. “I donate to a small group of scientists that are funding research to prove how harmful captivity is for orcas.”

Those who know me, know that this is an issue close to my heart and I really loved that the author touched on the subject of harmful effects of orcas in captivity.

The story has suspense elements which I enjoyed a great deal. Although you know from the start who the villain is you never get bored. I wanted to see it all play out in the end and let me tell you, Beckett is also a little badass. There are secondary characters in this book I'm pretty sure we'll get stories about and I'm very much looking forward to them all. Next up is Frank, who is an enigmatic real estate mogul with a secret side career that has me intrigued. I loved Frank's and Beck's bromance in The Last King! From what I've seen of Journey, Beck's cousin, will give Frank a run for his money. Too bad I'll have to wait until 2019 to get these two in my hands!

➳Intense, dramatic, passionate, and most importantly, sexy. This is what makes this romance novel so unique and desirable to the reader, making you also crave more of this upcoming series...

➳When I finish a book in one sitting, that's how you know that it's just meant to be read for sure. I was not expecting to turn the way it did, and thank God it did because that's what made this novel worth reading and take up my sweet time away from SUPERNATURAL. Thankfully I was able to finish this beauty in record time!

➳This is a quick review in which requires not a lot of information about the novel because every detail counts when it comes down to this romance addiction, and if provided it's basically a big spoiler. The romance between the characters is one that I found rather interesting to read... It had its ups and downs that made me throw the book ONCE across the bed because I wanted to just strangle Beckett and Samara! Their passion for each other definitely made me calm myself because of their anti-opinions about things that made me just strangle them both. Thankfully all my hairs are intact and I am glad I got to finish this puppy because now I cannot wait to get my hands on the next novel for sure!

➳Overall this is a novel that revolves itself around the ideal problems of family issues, more specifically, daddy/father issues that both Samara and Beckett share in common. I enjoyed this romance far more than what I was anticipating. Since I am a very picky person when it comes down to third perspective point of views in the writing style of romance, I am not the biggest fan but this one of course I had to make it an exception at how well and formal it was written. Thank you to Forever Romance for providing a copy in which I truly did adore through every page...

Title: The Last King
Series: The Kings #1
Author: Katee Robert
Release date: April 3, 2018
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

This is my fifth book by Katee Robert, and my favorite by far. I'm really glad that I got in on this series from book one, because she has sufficiently teased the next book enough to make me eager to continue on. The plot was set up with some real meat to it, enough to warrant a long overarching storyline in the following installments. Ms. Robert has proven at this point that she can write in any genre. Whether it's mafia, thriller, or straight contemporary, she always creates living, breathing, three-dimensional characters that effortlessly hook us.

If you like the enemies to lovers trope, this is the book for you. Samara and Beckett are adversaries in the oil industry they both work in, and there's certainly no love lost between them. Beckett King is the head of his family's dynasty, Morningstar Enterprises. Samara works for Kingdom corp, and reports directly to Beckett's estranged aunt, Lydia King.

From chapter one, when these two were in the same room together, sparks would fly with a vengeance. More often than not, Beckett was the victor in their bidding wars, and that caused considerable aggression and resentment from Samara. She's a fiercely competitive woman, and not especially fond of losing. I didn't really see any animosity coming from Beckett, he just looked at her as someone that he not only shouldn't, but couldn't associate with. Her loyalty to his viper of an aunt told him that getting mixed up with her could prove to be a grievous mistake. That didn't stop his attraction from blazing out of control and tempting him to cross lines that shouldn't be crossed.

Samara is equally attracted, but her will to become a success and further her career is a force to be reckoned with. Her ambition and drive was probably her best and worst feature all at the same time. While I thought it admirable that she wanted to honor her mother's sacrifices and avoid repeating her mistakes...she took things way too far. In fact, this was the one aspect of the story that didn't fully work for me, and it affected my final rating.

Let me start out by saying that I completely understood where she was coming from to put her career first, and her inability to trust Beckett. She had daddy issues a mile wide, and self-esteem issues because of her poor upbringing. Her goal to reach the highest rung in the corporate ladder meant safety and security-so putting her faith in a rich and powerful man like her father would be foolhardy. However, she stubbornly clung to this mindset, even when logically the truth should have slapped her in the face.

Samara didn’t make choices with her heart. She couldn’t afford to. She might not have achieved the level of ice-queen persona that Lydia cultivated, but what she had was better than nothing. In this industry, a thin skin might as well be an invitation for a knife in the back.

Beckett King was a wonderful hero. I never once questioned his motives or actions in the grand scheme of things. He may have played a little dirty at one point, but his conscience caused some unrest when the situation forced his hand. This is a guy who genuinely cares for those around him, most especially the well being of the employees in his company. After just losing his father, loneliness hits him hard, and he yearns for someone he can trust and depend on. She may not have been that for him in the beginning, but he was determined to find a crack in Samara's armor and get through her defenses. Samara's attempts to keep him at arms length is no match for his dogged persistence.

He’d blasted through every boundary she’d thrown in place between them, and now she felt like she was wandering in an endless fog without a signpost in sight.

As Beckett insinuated himself into her heart, danger escalated as they worked to uncover the truth behind his father's death, and the mysterious change to his will. There was never really any doubt as to who masterminded things, but there was a question of who would be hurt in the crossfire when weapons were drawn.

I absolutely loved Beckett from beginning to end, but Samara was an acquired taste. She started out with a lot of sharp edges, but eventually softened and achieved the character growth that she needed.
If you're looking for a new series to follow, this could be a good bet for you. I'm really looking forward to Journey and Frank's book, The Fearless King, which is due to be released next February. Frank is one of those mysterious and powerful characters that you want to know more about. It promises to be an exciting addition to the series.

❝Mixing business with pleasure is a bad idea.❞

Truer words have never been spoken. But it can be sinfully delish as well.
Where that I might be true things have been set in motion that will save them if they stick together.

The Characters.

Beckett King is the last King on his father’s side after a terrible accident it is time for the will to be read. Nathanial King was loathed by everyone but he was the only family Beckett had left and now he is alone. Coming from one of the biggest oil magnate’s Morningstar Enterprises his now his. His rival? His Kingdom Corp, Aunt Lydia is one of the coldest subzero ladies out there.

Beckett King is lush. I rarely fall in love with a fictional character but he was snagged by his gruffness, his rough edges, his confidence yet also his ability to feel vulnerable. He is a total alpha male but he leans on Samara which I haven’t seen a long time in a book. He has integrity and plays by a different set of rules.

Samara Mallick has worked hard to be the second in command for Kingdom Corp. She has sacrificed to be where she is today. Her rival has always been Beckett King though.

Samara Mallick is a strong heroine, she is ballbuster and doesn’t put up with peoples bullshit mostly Beckett’s though. She is kind and although she doesn’t want to get involved in the end she can’t but not get involved. She was closer to turning into her father than she knew. But her sense of justice and moral kept her on the right path.

The Chemistry.

They should be off limits to one another but the tension has been rising with them for years.
I liked the rivalry they had with one another more than I thought I would. It added depth to them as characters especially when they were trying to adjust to be more than what happened in Norway.
The chemistry is in the small things that they share, their childhoods, secrets they can tell no one else. But not only that their sexual chemistry was off the charts but they also had emotional chemistry that grew more and more throughout the book.

The Writing & Plot.

The writing is solid it flows well and the pace of the book is never boring moment. I enjoyed every moment of it.

There is some fantastic family history created here. It is dark, it is borderline sick and it comes across as normal within the King family. They have their pride which can also be their downfall.

It was all cutthroat but that is what made it fun for me. The games they played the manoeuvring an intricate chess game hoping that Beckett & Samara would come out on top.

The Verdict.

Thirty years of spite makes for one hell of a story. I didn’t think I’d like it but I love being proved wrong. The Last King has everything I love in a book suspense, angst, romance all in a neat package with all loose ends tied up that I cannot see one thing didn’t work in this book.

New relationships will be created in the King family from now. Journey King and Frank Evans are up next. On a side note here who calls their daughter bloody Journey I mean WTH were they thinking?

Ms. Robert hit a winner with this one in my opinion.

Last but not least - No other woman drama there was just no time.

There’s nothing better then an enemies-to-lovers romance. The fire, the angst, the PASSION. The Last King has all that and so, so much more. Really though, I just want MORE of this story!

I can’t get over how much I loved Samara and Beckett. I love when two feisty people bicker and put up a good fight and that’s exactly what they did. Rivals at everything business related but when it came to their own personal feelings, well let’s just say they had a harder time fighting how they truly felt.

And really I can’t blame them. For one, Samara is extremely strong and smart and can hold her own like no other. For two, it’s Beckett freaking King and any woman who would be immune to this man is just crazy because he is WOW.

"God, her heart ached for him. He’d lost so much, and he just kept moving forward, barely missing a step. "

What a truly addicting romance. Not only was there lust, angst and all the romance you could want but there was also greed, jealously, hatred and danger. Where has Katee Robert been all my life!? Because she writes every single thing I love to read about and she writes it perfectly.

I found myself getting more and more sucked into this story. There was so much going on but it just made me want to flip through the pages even more to find out what the outcome would be. I needed Samara and Beckett to be together. I needed to figure out what fueled all the greed and jealously and pure rage that was happening in this story and that’s most likely why I devoured this in two days.

The Last King is intense, sexy, ruthless and a guilty pleasure read that all my romance lover’s who like a little dangerous side would absolutely love. It’s the first in a new series by Katee Robert that I will defiantly be following along with because I am now hooked on this author’s writing and I guarantee you will be too!

I love this cover! This is not an MC read but our main character does ride a Harley. In fact, Bennett's character was a good mix of motorcycle bad boy and rich corporate suit. They are my favorite types of Hero's.

Bennett just inherited his family company after his father dies in a car accident. There is not a lot of love lost between him and his father, but the accident sounds suspicious. When a series of events start happening soon after, Bennett knows he needs to investigate before he ends up like his father.

Samara is the right hand woman to Lydia King. She's hard working and loyal. She should not give into her attraction to Lydia's nephew, Bennett. He's the son of the enemy and competition to Lydia's company. When Lydia keeps throwing her in the path of Bennett to attain information, she knows she has to be careful or she will be collateral damage between the two powerful family members.

Bennett and Samara have been fighting their mutual attraction from the beginning. Bennett should be concentrating on the suspicious nature of his father's death and the recent change to his will. He should not be caring more about getting Samara to fall for him.

This is a great start to what looks like a new family drama series by Katee Robert. We got introduced to several side characters that will make for a great main character in future books. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes this. ARC provided by NetGalley.

The Last King was a really fun and enjoyable book. Hate love?? Sign me up.

Beckett King was something something. He is the heir to the Morningstar empire - which the name makes me think of the show Lucifer for some reason. His dad just had an unexpected death which obviously doesn't sit well with him. Unfortunately that's not all. His competition is actually his aunt's company, Kingdom Corp. Blood may be thicker than water in some families.. but it sure as hell isn't in this one.

Then there's Samara Mallick, she actually works for Beckett's aunt. Talk about awkward people. HOWEVER, their chemistry gave me life. They were on fire and the sexual tension was probably my favorite thing to read ever. Once they get a taste of each other I just knew I had to keep shipping them.

Who cares that they are each other's competition within the work force? I don't. I just know that it will somehow come up. Now even though I loved their chemistry.. well, I loved Beckett a hell of a lot more. Samara came off downright bitchy at times. I seriously have no idea why he even gave her a chance but in the end I did end up loving her.. because she was with him.

They both have one thing in common: daddy issues. However, they both dealt with different issues while growing up. I think because of that reason, that bonding over how to deal with it and move on, was why I ended up loving them together.

Overall, I loved this book. I feel like I zoomed through it and I don't regret a thing. I kind of want to reread it - especially when the second book comes out. Which I obviously need when it immediately comes out!

Katee Robert is easily an auto-read author for me. I was so excited to hear about The Kings series. I'm a sucker for all things complicated families and the Kings sounded like that kind of family. I can always count on this author to deliver achingly swoony romances and she certainly delivered that here with The Last King.

I always have zero trouble falling for Katee Robert's heroes. Beckett was no different. He had a quiet intensity to him that I found very intriguing. I just wanted to peel all the layers of mystery surrounding his character. He was thrust into this position of high responsibility after his father's suspicious passing, but the guy was confident and pretty brilliant at his job. Beckett was a man who went after what he wanted and didn't bow down to others, a quality he most certainly needed to face his manipulative aunt. The only person he couldn't seem to woo was Samara. Samara was a fantastic heroine herself. She was very goal-oriented, confident and could absolutely crush you with her heels. I loved how ambitious and affirmative Samara was. Samara was also an Indian America and I appreciated the diversity. That being said, I do wish Samara's Indian representation had been a stronger element here than just mentions of "samosa" and "biryani". There were also some Hindi words here that were not used properly. I'm hoping that this has changed in the final copy.

The romance between Beckett and Samara was really one of the highlights of The Last King. Their chemistry together was smoking and as always, the steamy scenes were out of the world. I love how Katee Robert's sexy-times scenes aren't just about the physical aspects of sex. She always manages to intertwine the emotional connection between the couple. Beckett and Samara had a "rivals to lovers" romance, a trope that I don't think we see enough of in romance, and it was done really well here. The tension between the two because of their positions was A+. I also could not get enough of the side characters here. I thought Beckett's whole family was just fascinating. I was especially intrigued by his aunt, Lydia King, who made for a pretty freaking awesome villain. Also, I'm already here for Journey, Beckett's cousin, and Frank, Beckett's best friend's, book. They are next so I don't have much of wait, thankfully!

The Last King was a great start to The Kings series. If you like your romances steamy with some hate-to-love dynamics, scandalous family feuds and headstrong characters, this is a book for you.

Katee Robert is an automatic one-click author for me. Her stories are always sexy, intense and filled to the tee with emotions and drama. I loved The Last King. Beckett and Samara were so hot and their banter was engaging and sexy. I also loved the underlying suspenseful theme and the turbulent family drama. This novel was fantastic!!

Faced with the untimely death of his father and now at the helm of his father's fortune and company, Beckett King decides he needs someone to trust on his side. Enter Samara Mallick - she is his competition and kryptonite and the only woman who sets his world on fire!! But Samara had trust issues and an extreme aversion to the wealthy and powerful after her own painful experiences. For this reason Beckett King represented everything she hated in life. But her body was not on the same wavelength as her mind. The results: pure and utter FIREWORKS!!

Gahh I loved this story. I thought it was fantastic and compelling and I was hooked from the get go. I loved all of the characters and loved that despite being at odds professionally, personally Samara and Beckett were the perfect people for one another. They both saw through each other's hard exteriors and knew their inner vulnerabilities and insecurities.

All in all this was fantastic and I can not wait for Frank and Journey's book. OMG it is going to be spectacular!! I would like to thank Netgalley and Forever Romance for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. Bravo!! 4.5 stars!! ~Ratula

Note - this is not a motorcycle club romance

If you like contemporary romance you do not want to miss out on The Last King!

Beckett and Samara are perfect for each other. Beckett is alpha male without being an alpha-hole, he’s sexy, caring, fierce and a dirty, dirty talker. Did I say Beckett is a dirty talker? Samara is a strong heroine, a successful business woman, a dirty talker and a woman who is just as confident in the bedroom as the hero. I absolutely love Beckett and Samara! Samara is one of the best heroine's I've read.

The Last King is an exceptionally well paced romance full of passion, intrigue, drama and a page turning plot that kept me reading into the very early hours of the morning.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series, lucky for me Ms. Robert has a back list that I can explore while I wait.

Katee Robert became a go-to author for me when she released The Marriage Contract in 2015. The Last King is the start of Katee's newest romantic suspense and she is starting it off well.

The Last King surrounds the King family. Wealth, power and prestige is what has torn this family in two over the years. Beckett has inherited his father's company and fortune after his unexpected death. However, things are far some settled. His Aunt Lydia has always been a huge thorn in Beckett's father side and now she is driving that thorn into Beckett. But Lydia doesn't play by the rules and uses everyone around her to play her games for her.

Samara has worked for Kingdom Corp for quite some time and has worked her way up just short of top management. She is practically Lydia's right hand and also Beckett's biggest rival. These two are always in a bidding war for contracts but it's when they can no longer deny the sexual chemistry that things really get heated behind closed doors.

The Last King is a bit of slow burn read. Katee does a phenomenal job of giving us a lot of background detail on these characters and their families. I think this is where I felt things slow down a bit for me but it's needed in order to build the drama and suspense that will carry on for the rest of the series. You get an understanding of how things came to be and how it's affected each character in different ways.

This mixture of the romance and suspense was a perfect balance and blend. Samara kept her guard up when need be but also allowed herself to feel without the barrier of her job getting in the way. Beckett refused to allow his father or the animosity between the companies be a wedge between he and Samara. I love that he never once gave up his pursuit of her. There is no real mystery as to who's behind everything that keeps the excitement going - it's just seeing what happens next and how everyone fairs in the end that keeps the book moving along.

I am excited to see where Katee takes us in the next book. I can sense that Journey is going to be a very dramatic woman with her daddy issues. Daddy isssues seems to be driving force in this series.....I like it.

Filthy rich family drama—tuned up several notches—lies at the heart of ‘The Last King’ as children pay for the bad blood that started decades before their time and work painfully through schisms because of one woman’s longstanding, poisonous resentment left to fester.

It isn’t often that I read such books (the constant bitching and underhanded manoeuvring can get headache-inducing), but Katee Robert’s writing is compelling enough to give stories like this a shot. As I suspected, it is easy to get engrossed in the tale of bad blood, bitchy office politics and corporate espionage that sort of runs the boundary into the murderous, though it feels a little like an oncoming train wreck I can’t take my eyes off.

Vile aunt vs. struggling nephew, the former of whom gets her comeuppance and the latter of whom finally gets what he deserves? How sweet the sound. But unlike the kind of fairy-tale where the prince and princess ride off blissfully into their HEA oblivious to the smoking ruins around them, built into this first establishing story of the series is also a very difficult generation transition with several burn marks to pay for getting rid of a vile villain you’d love to hate, and a rival-to-lovers tale that thankfully, doesn’t involve too many TSTL moments.

Robert does write Beckett King as a protagonist I could sympathise with, and Samara Mallick as a worthy other half for him. Apart from their chemistry scorching the sheets, I didn’t have problems seeing both of them as equals both in and out of bed and I actually liked how Robert wrote Samara’s eventual shift in loyalty towards Beckett instead of blindly following his vile aunt the whole way.

In fact, I expected to be exhausted by the end of ‘The Last King’. Instead, I was drawn in—admittedly a little slowly and reluctantly at first—, surprised at how Beckett and Samara stole the show for me, as did Robert’s secondary characters, making me anxious to get onto the other Kings’ stories, though a long, long wait is in order.

Having read and enjoyed the last three books in Katee Robert’s O’Malleys series, I found myself more than willing to pick up more of the author’s work. I keep meaning to go back to the start of the O’Malleys series, to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, but I’ve been sucked in by her new releases instead. First there was Make Me Want, the first book in the Make Me series. I wasn’t crazy about this one, but it was an okay enough read. Then there was The Last King, the first book in The Kings series, and I found I enjoyed this one even less. I’m thinking it may well be a case that the O’Malleys series was for me, but as a whole Katee Robert is not. I’m willing to give some of her other books a read, but I’m no longer the eager person I was prior to diving into The Last King.

You see, I was really excited for The Last King. It sounded exactly like the kind of book I would love, with all the elements of a good romance that sucks me in. Then, when I started reading, I found it was extremely difficult to get through. I kept starting and stopping this one, and it took me far too long to work my way through this book.

My issue is that I did not care. I did not care for the characters, as I could not connect with them at all. I did not care for the story, as it did not grip me in the way I had hoped. I just didn’t care much at all. I kept turning the pages, waiting for the moment where I would be sucked in, but it did not happen. I spent the entire book feeling indifferent to the events and the characters, and I was so disappointed as I had such high hopes this would be a new Katee Robert series I could enjoy from the start.

Sure it was steamy, I cannot fault Katee Robert for that, but without chemistry I cannot connect with such an element of the storyline – and I am not going to work my way through a series simply because the steam is good, when I am not enjoying anything else.

I’m sure many will enjoy this – I know there are many Katee Robert fans out there who will be more than ready to dive into the future books in this series – but it was not for me. As I said, I will give some of the author’s other work a read, but I doubt I’ll be diving into each new release as I have over the last couple.

Spoilers ahead

I really tried to hold off on reading this book until more of the series were released but obviously I failed.

Samara( I adore that name) works for Beckett's aunt who has been an enemy of his father for over 30 years, because of this enmity between the older siblings Beckett is not close with his family and their businesses are in frequent competition. Samara and Beckett have been rivals for years until at an away trip they have one night together.
Six months later, Beckett returns to Houston as his father dies and he inherits the company. He and Samara are once again in close proximity as events start happening at Beckett's company that causes Samara to question where her loyalty should lie and brings danger to Beckett.

I enjoyed this story, Beckett was strong, powerful and just vulnerable enough at the right moments. T didn't appear that he'd been with anyone else during the six months they were apart and from the moment Samara gave him the opportunity,he was invested in trying to make something work between them.

Samara's mother had a hard life because she fell in love with a rich man and ended up pregnant and alone. This suffering by her mother had a big impact on Samara and guided a lot of the choices she made. She pushed Beckett away a lot because she was afraid of following in her mother's footsteps. I didn't like that she took so long to see her boss was up to no good but she was loyal to a fault and struggled to believe that the woman she'd worked for for over 10 years could be so evil.

I did think the enemy aspect of their relationship went on a tad too long, making the ily seem hasty even though they had a great connection throughout.

Good secondary characters who seem to be getting their own book, interesting plot, likeable mcs, a bit of steamy sexy times and an interracial couple made this one of my mother enjoyed reads in a while.

Enemies to lovers normally isn’t my thing, but Katee knows how to write a romance novel that isn’t all hearts and Cupid’s and icky stuff. Samara and Beckett work in rival companies and cannot stand each other. 6 months after a one night stand Beckett finds him self needing Samara’s help. This book not only gives us enemies to lovers but offers us feuding families. Looking forward to the second in the series. Only wish I had discovered them sooner.

The Last King by Katee Roberts an intense, thrilling and passionate read.
From the first few pages I was hooked. I couldn't get enough of Beckett and Samara!
I loved watching them together, they were strong passionate characters that knew what they wanted and went after it. The road to being together was full of road blocks but with honest communication, trust and a little help from a few trusted friends they were able to find a way to make it happen.
This was such a good read, it's well written, the characters are likable, relatable and the storyline will keep you turning the pages late into the night as you won't want to put it down.

Another awesome read by the talented author Katee Robert.

The Last King is a fab start to the The Kings series, looking forward to the next book coming in early 2019. Journey and Frank's sexual tension in The Last King has set the next book up to be a must read, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it! lol

THE LAST KING by Katee Robert is the First book in The Kings Series. This is the story of Beckett King and Samara Mallick.
Beckett just inherited his fathers Morningstar empire which has left him wealthy but he feels that something else is going on with his father's death.
Samara works for Kingdom Corp which Beckett's Aunt runs. There is no love lost between the Aunt and Beckett. This has caused Samara and Beckett to but heads when going toe to toe for the same contract. But when Beckett needs someone by his side that he can trust, he knows that Samara is that person.
This was a exciting enemies to lovers story. Ms. Robert is a author I know will bring me a great story...one of my 'go to' authors.

The Last King was an addictive and sexy new romance novel. This book started with a steamy and passionate start and it never lost that momentum! This story was a fast read that kept me very entertained!

The two main characters, Beckett and Samara, were interesting and well-developed characters. Samara was a bit abrasive at first, but I could tell that Samara was using that as a front to hide something. As Samara revealed more about herself and her past, it was easy to see why she had walls up. I liked that she was never afraid to speak up and express herself, but I was glad that she learned to open up and be more understanding. She was a devoted and smart woman that I really grew to love! Beckett was a charming, determined, and suave man. He definitely oozed sex appeal, but I wasn't sure if I was going to like him due too how cocky he was. However, he turned out to be an endearing, protective, and understanding man. It took some time for me to warm up to him, but I ended up liking him a lot by the end of the book.

One thing that bothered me about Beckett was that there were a few times that he said some things that came off as sexist. However, Samara called him out on it EVERY TIME, which made my heart explode with joy. I was glad that Samara helped him eventually become a more accepting person.

The romance between Beckett and Samara was full of passion and steam. Right from the beginning, it was easy to see that the physical chemistry between Beckett and Samara was explosive, but they had a lot to work through. There were a lot of obstacles that they had to overcome, which usually made me want to pull my hair out due to stress and frustration! I was never sure if they would truly be able to make their relationship work, but they were able to prove me wrong.

Overall, this book was a fun escape that I would recommend to anyone looking for a sexy romance book!

Katee Robert is one of my favorite authors. And it saddens me to say that The last king wasn't one of her best works. It wasn't as good as the other books she has gotten me used to. It felt a little too rushed and not as well constructed as the other books. I didn't feel the rush I should have felt when the bad guy went down. I am excited about the upcoming books in the series though. The two people of the couple from the next book are already known to the reader and I want to read their story. They seemed interested.

The transition from enemies to lovers was smooth and I found myself rooting for them. I liked that the author didn't waste too much time on drama and instead had Samara and Beckett work together instead of fighting each other. Samara was a great heroine and I approved most of her actions. She is a good person and her gut was telling her to do the right thing. I wanted to see her stand up to her boss who wasn't respecting her and was acting like she was just the person who brings the coffees. Beckett is also a good hero, but Samara stole the spotlight.

I might have thought that this book wasn't as good as some others by this author, but I would still recommend it.

Overall: 4/5
Naughty Factor: 3/5
POV: Dual/3rd person

I became a HUGE fan of Katee Roberts after being introduced to her O’Malleys series. Aside from her incredible writing, she has an amazing knack of bringing family discord to life. That is exactly what she did in the start of her new series.

The Last King was filled with suspense and mystery. It was raw and gritty and felt a bit reminiscent of when I watched that show Dallas as a young girl. The hostility between two branches of the King family was awesome to see.

Beckett was an incredible man from a powerful family, but he just wanted to live up to his family’s expectations and be a great employer as well as do his family name proud. But the family history he was born into has him working harder than expected.

With Samara on his mind and in his bed, she makes it much easier for him and with her by his side, he’s not alone anymore.

The characters shared an incredible chemistry and intense physical attraction. Their sexual tension was molten level HOT, the suspense and mystery was nail-biting and I want more. I can’t wait to read more from this series!

Samara Mallick and Beckett King both know that they last thing that they should be doing is getting any more involved with each other than their positions as adversaries in the boardrooms of the world will allow.

But...
Thanks to an ill advised rendezvous in Norway. The two also know that they share a passion that render one or both of them unable to resist a touch, a glance, or even a hushed whisper from the other.

So...
When Beckett's father, Nathaniel, dies under mysterious circumstances. Just after a meeting meeting with his sister, and fiercest competitor Lydia. Beckett is left reeling, and growing less certain by the day; about just who he can trust.

Until Samara...

The woman that he can't seem to get out of his system. Even though he knows that as the seeming right-hand to his aunt. The founding member of Kingdom Corp. Beckett knows that getting too close to her puts him in just the right position to lose considerably more than his heart. But the more that he comes to know of Samara. The surer he becomes that she may be the one person that he can trust with everything.
If he lives long enough, that is.

Beckett and Samara's relationship is not exactly one that would be considered a "hate relate" in the purest sense. What we really seem to have here are two people who are basically cut from the same cloth as far as ambition, daddy issues, morals, etc.
With the main differences between the two being that he was born into money.
And they play for opposing companies.
His being Morning Star.
Hers being Kingdom Corp.

The problem...
Their magnetic attraction to each other.
And in this case "magnetic" is meant in the literal sense of the word.
When they are not battling over contracts in the boardroom. They are battling for control in the bedroom. So much so in fact, that their sexcapades bracket every major occurrence in the book.
Though one does come to understand somewhat later in the read that said "sexcapades" serve both as a balm to hurting souls and a bond that brings the two ever closer. The "bunnies on fire overload" can be a bit distracting at the outset.
The more that the reader comes to understand about Beckett and Samara. And the more that they come to understand about themselves. The more comfortable all parties become with the "magnets".

In fact...
The closer that the two get to finding out the who's and why's of his father's death. And the very suspicious, not to mention life threatening things that are becoming more commonplace.
That magnetism is often what stands between them and certain death.

This is a very well written Contemporary Romantic Suspense novel. With a very tight central cast. Which works wonders when it comes to maintaining the lightening speed pace that this read is blessed with.

Another plus to this story is the fact that it boasts of not one but two characters of color. The first of whom being Samara. Who is Indian. The second, Frank Evans, real estate tycoon, man of mystery, a man with more tricks up his sleeve than David Copperfield, Beckett's best friend, and the perfect portion of Afro-American sexual chocolate.
O.K. Enough drooling! Back to the review.

In short.
This is a great book. It has everything that those who love to fall in love will love.
This is a true twin flame romance!
Alpha for alpha.
The perfect "type A happily..."

***5 ‘Long Live the Kings’ Stars***

I loved The O’Malley’s and was quite sad that there would be no more books coming from the dysfuctional yet fascinating world and family, and then The King’s series was announced and the sadness started to dissipate and I made it a point to keep an eye out for The Last King and I was not disappointed! It was a fun, smexy, intense and kind of crazy read that was filled with characters I really want to know more about (like Frank...js) and kept me turning the pages to see not only what would happen next in Beckett and Samara’s dance, but also what crazy thing the baddie would do next.

I Adored Beckett! Adored. Yes, he’s grown up with a silver spoon and can be quite the shark when it comes to how he handles things when it comes to his company, but there is also this streak of...I hate to use the word, but goodness that is an inherent part of who he is. He definitely has his Alpha AF moments and, as I’ve said, can play dirty, but he’s a good man down to his very soul.

Samara. I loved her, I did, but she frustrated the hell out of me She’s determined, hard working and gives as good as she gets ~ if not more when the situation calls for and I absolutely loved all of that. But she needed to stop having conversations with herself in her head. Seriously, she was driving me batshit crazy with it. I understood why she felt the way she did, I did, but girlfriend needed to have a come to Jesus talk with herself a lot sooner than she did because I was ready to reach out and Gibbs smack her. I am thankful I didn’t have to, but it was close.

Beckett and Samara’s enemies(ish) to lovers journey was a fun one. The chemistry between them was intense, but what made it even more was the simple fact that despite everything they actually respected the hell out of each other. They’d never admit it, at least in the beginning, but it was there. Their bantering was sharp, but fun and the smexy was all kinds of panty melting goodness. Their road is a bumpy one and the push/pull is real, but in the end they end up exactly where they were supposed to be.
So, as you can tell, I’m totally excited about this series ~ and really, really happy that Frank’s book is up next (even if the is significant ~ it’s up next) ~ but that isn’t to say the rest of the King’s didn’t intrigue me, because they did, but it’s Frank. *BSEG* As for the storyline and the baddie ~ cray, cray but fun and when everything came together it all made sense to me. I loved the 3rd person dual POV’s with a smattering of other POV’s added in, which only helped to give the world more depth ~ at least as far as I am concerned. In the end, this was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what the next book brings!
