Diane Capri has returned to add to her Hunt for Reacher series, taking a slightly different approach to events. After an explosion in a home, everyone is presumed dead, including the elusive Jack Reacher. FBI Agents Otto and Gaspar have been two steps behind him for so long and now, it would seem, things have gone frigid. However, after the controversial document dump, TrueLeaks, transcripts of a telephone call speaking of Reacher being alive and well, which means Otto and Gaspar must rush to New York to continue their investigation. All the while, General MacKenzie ‘Nitro Mack’ Parnell has come to learn of a sizeable amount of money being hidden away in an New York apartment, money that was tied to an operation he sanctioned years ago. Now, Parnell wants what he feels is his and will stop at nothing to retrieve it. Nitro Mack has a history with Reacher as well, someone who had little love loss for his superior while still serving in the military. As Agents Otto and Gaspar piece together a better understanding of what is going on with Reacher, they are soon following the track of Parnell’s mess as he hunts down the money. As more bodies pile up and the money is nowhere to be found, everyone begins to wonder if, like Reacher, it’s disappeared in plain sight. Capri does well to stand alone while keeping Reacher true to his nature. A decent effort that Reacher fans may like, though the series grows and stands on its own merits.

As she tends to do with each novel’s introduction, Capri pays homage to Lee Child and his creation of the Jack (none) Reacher character. She speaks of how each novel she writes parallels with one that Child has created, which allows the reader to read them one after the other and notice the chronological ties. I have never done so and feel that Capri’s work can stand alone, though the elusive nature of Reacher from Child’s novels is just as strong in this series. Otto and Gaspar remain central characters here and pose no threat to overpowering one another. Many of the past novels have developed their characters, but here, it would seem as though they are in neutral and the focus is strictly Reacher and Parnell. Capri’s glimpse into Otto’s personal thoughts and a run-in within her apartment is about as in-depth a character reveal as the story offers. The secondary characters, as with the mainstream Reacher stories, change each time, though they are well placed here to deliver a strong story. While the story was good and paced itself well, I found it difficult to affix myself to everything that was going on. I wanted to, as I love Reacher, but this piece seemed less focussed on Reacher and more on how the agents would eventually fall in line with Parnell’s antics. It could be an anomaly of the series and I will not rake Capri over the coals for my own sense of confusion. Overall, a decent effort and I am eager to see if she can redeem herself with the next book, highlighted at the end of the narrative.

Kudos, Madam Capri, for keeping Jack (none) Reacher alive between Lee Child novels. You do well on your own and it shines through with each novel you produce in this series.

Searching for an enigma....

Having been a Jack Reacher fan for years and hungrily devouring all books featuring him, I love this author's series in which the FBI has agents looking for him. Any normal living person will live life so different from Reacher, who has no ties and no home.
Agent Otto and her partner,Agent Gaspar, are sent by their Boss out seeking him for a classified assignment. Otto watched a house blow up that Reacher supposedly was in, yet she swears he is alive, actually sensing him in her apartment one night. This story contains great characters that you will love, in a fast-paced tale that pulls you along and keeps you guessing through the end.
The author, Diane Capri, does a tremendous job to keep Reacher the lone man he is, while weaving an incredible story that will delight and entertain you.

Well written story with well developed characters
involved in a fast moving, riveting storyline.
FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar
are not the only ones searching for Jack Reacher.
The agents find themselves involved with a
unsavory general looking for something valuable.
He will kill to retrieve it.
Murder, disorder, trouble seen to follow the agents
from Detroit to New York City then onto upper New
York State followed by West Palm Beach.
The author weaves the past and present together
without difficulty. You will feel as if you are part of
the story.
Diane Capri’s Reacher is seen by the agents with
a different opinion than Lee Child’s Reacher. This
makes the continuing Saga of the Hunt for Jack
Reacher a intriguing and interesting series to read.
This is book # 8 in The Hunt for Reacher Series
but can be read as a stand alone.
I volunteered to read Jack the Reaper. Thanks to the
author for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.

I have now read 8 of the 12 Hunt for Reacher books, trying to stick to the pace of a book a week. For the first time in the series there is a gap in time. This story picks up three weeks after the previous. And once again Agents Otto and Gaspar are put on the trail of Reacher by the elusive Cooper. But many things in this story are different than others in the series, and not just the gap in time.

The story begins with Otto waking up and being certain that Reacher was in her apartment. Then within minutes Cooper arrives on her doorstep to reactivate the search, but this time in person. This story looks at events and people from the novel The Hard Way. It is interesting in my review of that novel I stated it felt different than all the other Reacher stories. And this one feels different than all the other Hunt for Reacher Stories. For one Otto is becoming bolder and more brazen especially in her communications with Cooper. This time not only are Gaspar and Otto trying to track down Reacher, but also retired Army General ‘Nitro’ Mack Parnell is after him and millions of dollars. And he is leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

The main cast of characters in this story are:

Kim L. Otto
Carlos M. Gaspar
Charles Cooper
Lamont Finlay
Nitro Mack Parnell
Lauren Pauling
Greg Brewer
Nick Scavo
John Lawton

and of course
Jack Reacher

This novel hints at some interesting things to come. And reveals some pieces from the past. It also has Otto thinking about Reacher in a very different light. With murders in multiple locations, an attack on Lauren Pauling. A plane crash and explosion, and more. This story reads more like an action adventure than mystery or crime literature. And yet it maintains that Crime lit feel and vibe.

I am very intrigued to see where the story will go next. And how the investigation will proceed. In the six months before reading this series I read 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child. And somehow, I stumbled upon these books while preparing one of my reviews and recalled my dad having mentioned them. So, I decided to give one a try. And I am very thankful that I did. I typically read a couple hundred books a year, and the last few years have been over 300 a year. And at the pace I am going I will finish off this series un under a year from my first Reacher read. These stories are great reads for Reacher fans. But they are written well enough that they could be read on their own. But they really ought to be read in order, something I must admit that is something that I often do not do, but in this case am sticking to the order. Lee Child himself has even plugged these books in the Reacher Report. And they deserve the applause.

A very intriguing story in an excellent series. And as always leaves us wondering where the Hunt for Reacher will take us next!

Get Ready, the Chase is On!

All of your senses tell you he’s near, ready to inject himself into whatever rescue is necessary... except Visio of course. Otto wakes up to a sense that Jack Reacher is sitting in a corner chair in her bedroom. She can smell his presence. Then she hears the sounds of heavy boots in the hallway of her very-secure Detroit condo. Her phone rings. It’s her boss, telling her to open up, he’s there to see her.
And thus starts another chase of one dead end after another. Or perhaps, we should say one body after another. Otto is sure her perception of Reacher as a very violent person is right on. The journey takes her from Detroit to New York City to upper New York State to West Palm Beach.
Diane Capri has raised this Jack Reacher chase to a new and higher level than ever before. My pulse rate just settled back down. Her character development of Otto and Gaspar is deeper and much more detailed than before, much more believable! And the villain is so despicable you want to reach in and stop him yourself. This is a good Saturday read for those who want to go straight through without interruption. If Amazon allowed for six stars (******) I definitely would grant Jack the Reaper and Diane Capri the maximum plus one!

Jack the Reaper, book 8 in Diane Capri's The Hunt for Jack Reacher series...My Favorite, so far in this series. Most important, this is DC's creative weave and spin on Lee Child's series and main character, Jack Reacher. Diane Capri's main characters are FBI Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar. Originally sent out to collect background info on a possible hire, Jack Reacher. From book 1 quickly became much more. Now chasing the man as much as his background info. Is their boss, Mr. Copper directing or miss-directing them?!? Murder, mayhem, destruction, as well as someone helping victims keep occurring on their hunt. Is Reacher the hero or the villain?!? Kim Otto unsure if she is changing or loosing her mind. “It’s not likely you have the full picture of the man since you get your information from Cooper.”...a belief by more than one of Reacher's former friends. Mine too!!! I received this book as an ARC. I am voluntarily posting this review. A Must Read book and series. Each book can be read as a standalone but Oh, So Much more as a series!!!

Great new book in the Hunt for Jack Reacher Series with two of my favorite characters, Otto and Gaspar. I love the camaraderie between these two characters. Reacher is presumed dead, but Otto suspects this isn’t true. He is also being hunted by an army general who is very violent and corrupt, along with a couple of Reacher’s friends. All of these characters are very well developed and I couldn’t put it down. This is the best in the series so far!!

The well written characters draw you deeper into the story and makes it hard to put down. It's a fast paced tale that keeps you guessing as you try and figure out what will happens next. As always, I found the race against the odds very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to more adventures of Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar.

It's a fast and easy read. Otto and Gaspar are fully themselves in a period of days where they fly to NYC and then Palm Beach (island) FL. They do so on assignment without being given the full knowledge of why.

The plot revolves around 9 millions dollars taken from an apartment in the Dakota. (West Central Park Manhattan iconic building that is in too many different fiction tales for my druthers.) We Reacher readers know who took it. And what happened to it. Sunshine and Chico don't. Neither does the principle prime bad guy who was part of the graft ring of which those funds are a part.

It's a novel that has too much non-sleep running and eating and missing luggage in the first 1/2. The second half after Pauling is fixed in the mix- it is a full 4 star read. Nearly all the critical action happens within the last 75 pages. Although there is body count (too much of it) before that point.

We know Reacher is there in at least 4 points throughout the book. You never see him. Although Otto feels his underwater touch during the crisis.

All around an enjoyable candy read for this genre. FBI and DOJ in general is as duplicitous as usual. More within the boss hierarchy. Also corruption of upper-ups is the core of the tale. Military, politicians, unelected big-wig governmental elites. What's new?

finished 3rd november 2022 good read three stars i liked it kindle library loaner first from capri and apparently there is a "whole cottage industry"...as those in the know are fond of writing...with jack reacher. heh! came across this one and another, same vein...capri has quite a list of titles all apparently to do with the hunt for jack reacher. in this one an upper echolocation uckie-uck military general corrupt as the day is long...another fondue saying...is looking for his loot. knocking people off in the process. a couple effa bee eye agents have been tasked with...finding jack reacher...though their cover story is their doing background for a class fed job reacher will be tasked. didn't quite get the two forces they seek assistance from one their boss in the fabled sense and another...whatever. i've already started reading the other i checked out...library had two from capri that i found while sniffing books in the shelves and away i go. fast and furious. frumious even.

Jack Reacher is dead and Kim Otto saw him die! Or did she? She is at loose ends and wonders if it's true. Then she has a visitor who wonders the same thing. Thus begins the journey that covers several states and major metropolitan areas. All along the way, hunting Reacher and his ties to the FBI, military and local police. Throw in a general who's lost something valuable and will kill to get it back and you've got one of the best books in the Hunt for Reacher series.

Diane's books are always well researched and well written. This book goes to new levels and shows her dedication to keeping fans excited and on the edge of their seat.

I was on pins and needles a lot of this book…it looked like Agents Otto and Gaspar might actually find Reacher. (No spoilers here, although I desperately want to.) I knew they couldn’t…wouldn’t…but anything can happen. This is the 8th book in this series. I don’t believe they really need to be read in any order, but it would be nice to read the accompanying Lee Child Jack Reacher book beforehand, but absolutely not a necessity. I’ve read all of Child’s Jack Reacher books and look forward to reading more about him in Capri’s Hunt for Reacher series. Never a dull moment.

I liked this one better than the prior Diane Capri book. A quick read. The connection to the Lee Child material and characters were strong and the characters vibrant. After having met Hobart in The Hard Way, I felt awful for Nick here. A good read.

I suppose they're getting a little better... I read the audio version, and the reader is way better than the woman on the first few. But I think Capri is improving over time as well -- though one of the central premises (that Reacher has his "ear to the ground" and comes running to help all his friends when they get into trouble) is just silly. (One could argue that it's left ambiguous, but whatever....)

Also, Amazon calls this #8, not #5. I'm not sure why there's that difference. Perhaps Audible counts shorter works?

Another of Diane Capri's novelties playing off of the Lee Child Jack Reacher series...In this one, our intrepid FBI agents, Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar, in their efforts to build a background file on Reacher, are pulled into a race to recover $ millions scammed from contracts...the story arises from the novel "The Hard Way"...As soon as I was able place the Child novels that were the jumping off points for the story, the more I appreciated them...decent reads...NOW

Jack the Reaper. Diane Capri

FBI agents Kim and Gaspar are again on the hunt for the elusive Jack Reacher. An Army Colonel and General have pilfered a lot of money into a very large retirement fund. The Colonel is dead and his partner in crime wants his share. Bodies are piling up. Again, Diane Capri has written and excellent Reacher adventure!! Enjoyed immensely!!

Okay, this one had more purely evil villains than the other books, which was a turn off, but then the worst of them got his comeuppance in a spectacular manner. Yay. Not enamored with so much killing but do like seeing the primary characters being forced to reassess their original, faulty reasoning. Gaspar is a great character!

A little disappointed

If you're going to write a series such as this, you have to keep stuff straight. How do you write a whole book that takes place in "Abbott Maine" mostly on some property called "Abbott Cape" and then refer to it as "Rocky Point" in the very next book... multiple times!
That's the kind of stuff that turns me off and if it continues, I'll quit reading.

Fair reading

Unfortunately, this book contains too much repetitive descriptive dialogue for my taste. Not a bad read, interesting characters but Getting to the point became somewhat of an arduous effort. Could have been better if a bit shorter.

Capri is really teasin' the reader about when Otto is going to meet Reacher.

Her antagonists are getting murkier and darker, too. Reacher has GOT to make an appearance to do a Reacher take-down.

He has to!!
