Acceptance is refreshing and original. It has been a while since I've come across a storyline so unique and intriguing. I love mythology and stories of the different deities and gods. So when I came across Acceptance, I was immediately interested. I enjoyed Trish's style of writing. I think shes brilliant for blending the different gods into one book.
Jewel and Anubis are phenomenal characters. Theres not a dull moment throughout the book. Every turn of the page something is being revealed or your trying to decipher what's going to happen next.
Be prepared for a thrilling journey as Jewel navigates through years of memories and merging two lives together. Buckle up buttercups!

*The author gave me a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. THANK YOU SO MUCH TRISH BENINATO!!! I FREAKING LOVE YOU AND YOUR BOOK!!!*

OH MY GOD! This read was just so perfect, so sweet, interesting, oh, just so gooooooood!!!

FULL REVIEW

“Now every time you look in the mirror, you will remember your betrayal, your fear, and you’ll remember me.”
-Jewel

I loved this book so much, it was everything to me. UNTIL I GOT TO THE END!
I NEED MORE!!!!!

The Characters

• Jewel – I loved her. Yes, there were times that I just wanted to tell her to shut the fuck up, but mostly I enjoyed her company through my sick days. She’s a read Jewel 😀
• Anubis – *sigh*…*dreamy sigh* I adore this character. He’s so sweet and so good and I was hot through every scene with that guy. And even though I have a boyfriend, and I love him very much… But Anubis had me one of my favorite Egyptian Gods before I read Acceptance, NOW I just want to marry this character! Oh, yeah ^^ Well… A girl can dream!
I just pray that she’s happy, safe and loved, no matter what she chooses – even if it breaks me.
-Anubis

• Teddy and Robert – I loved these two, they’re such nice and neat characters. Teddy is the main supporter, the best friend, and such a cute person. Even his NAME is CUTE! Robert is very calm and protective. I loved that about him. Such a good father figure. (I think, I have been suspicious after a few scenes with the auras, but I’m not sure if that will affect my feelings for this character).
• Thoth – this one is so much fun! I love these kinds of characters that just scream “I’m sexy and I know it”, but then he’s like also “I’m a smart ass and I know it!” I love love love this character, so goooood.
• Andrew – I was really getting tired of that guy. Yeah, you’re hot, so what? Cool down. (This is such a great joke, but sadly only few who read the book would understand it)
• Beroe – I HATE that bitch. There’s nothing more to say but how much I hate her!
• Aphrodite – this is one of my most favorite minor characters. Probably because she was also one of my favorite Greek Goddesses when I was little. Like, this character has so much love in her, you actually believe that she’s the Goddess of love! I adore her for being so supportive and sweet and emotional.
• Eros – even though there was very little with this character I adored him. He’s also so sweet and cute and has this sunny energy you just can’t miss out on.
• Gale and Jeff – these two lovebirds were rarely seen in the book but I still loved them. Especially Gale. I don’t know why, but I really, really like them.
“You’re so many things. You’re the beat of my heart, the breath on my lips; you are my sun, my moon, and my soul. You are the only love I will ever know.”
-Anubis

Some Thoughts
• I hated that Zeus is such an asshole! I know the myths and all, I know that everyone hated everyone. But I love the Disney movie Hercules, and I always loved that Zeus from that movie. I have a childish connection to that Zeus. I understand that this part is actually right in Acceptance, but still. I love Zeus and I hate to see him like this in this story.
• I loved Anubis. Man did I love that guy. He’s just perfect. I am just drooling over this character and I can’t stop thinking about him and that makes me shiver! I love the book for this!
• This was written so well, the storyline, the plot, the universe, the characters. Everything was perfect in my eyes. Again, I LOVE THIS BOOK
“I am yours, and you are mine. Together we are one.” -Jewel
“One heart, one soul, one love, forever and always.” -Anubis

All in All
I LOVE THIS BOOK, TAKE IT AND NEVER LET GO BECAUSE IT’S JUST PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!! I RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!! MY MIND IS OFFICIALLY BLOWN!!!
“Whatever you remember. Whatever you learn, just remember I love you as you are now as I loved you then, and nothing will ever change that.”
-Anubis

What I Liked:

This was amazing! This is easily one of the best books I have read this year. This story is told from Jewel’s PO, and we learn that she was once a goddess and she now has to reconcile her past self with her current self living on Earth. There are still a lot of mysteries left to uncover about her past. What happened to her to get her punished back in time and who can she trust? She slowly gets her memories back as the story progresses. The writing was flawless and kept my attention completely.

This book was nothing like I was expecting and that is both a good and bad thing. I was not expecting the sci-fi element to this book. I think k because I knew there was a Greek/Egyptian gods element I was expecting more of a fantasy read and that was what I was craving so there was that. I did like the really unique take on the gods, though. I loved the originality as it made them far more interesting and original than you get in most mythology influenced books.

I struggled to connect with the characters a little. I think because there wasn't enough introduction to the story and characters for my liking. Instead, it just gets going with all these characters introduced and you're dropped into the world of the Evols. In some ways that is a good thing, I prefer a fast pace, but I would have liked to get to know Jewel a bit more first so I could have felt a bit more connected with her from the start. The same goes for Anubis who begins loving Jewel and it was obvious. I would have liked him to be a touch more reserved about it so it would have felt like they were falling for one another from the start. I do love a good romance after all.

Although I felt a distance from the characters at times I was interested in the story. I would have liked to learn more about the Egyptian gods but I hope that will come in the next book as Jewel learns more so shall we. I think this was a good start and it was interesting and fast paced with plenty more to come.

I loved the way this book has twisted the mythology to paint a vivid picture straight from the author's mind. Unlike many stories these days, I did not know what would happen next! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the second book in the series!

*this review contains spoilers*
Mythology is cool! Mythology of all sorts - Greek, Egyptian, Roman, etc. - is so fucking interesting and I totally need to look into more stories surrounding mythological lore because I almost always find the stories I do read so, so good.
This book, however... lacked in a lot of those "interesting" departments, despite the promised subject matter.
I'm really disappointed because, while this book had ALL THE POTENTIAL IN THE WORLD to be a kickass drama involving gods from all sorts of cultures, the gods in "Acceptance" read like... some annoying, below-average high school mediocrity. Literally, what the hell are these kickass gods doing worrying about fucking PROM?
Anubis, for example, is one of our main characters, and in lore he's supposed to be the Egyptian God of fucking DEATH. If anything, a human-passing Anubis should be dark and dramatic as hell, right? It's DEATH. Literally the saddest, most dramatic, most anxiety-inducing thing a person will ever experience in life.
Wrong.
The Anubis in "Acceptance" reads like a high school fuckboy who can't keep it in his pants. He pines over a teenage girl - Jewel - who is supposed to be, like, his amazing goddess wife. Except they haven't seen each other in 4,000 YEARS, Jewel literally doesn't remember him until he forces memories upon her, and he comes off as a total creep who rakes through her thoughts 24/7 like an Edward Cullen wannabe.
Except, because instalove is apparently a necessity in the young adult genre, Jewel totally accepts it. In fact, because most of the book is told in her narration, she seems even worse than Anubis by comparison because her commentary about him is so... cringey and goddamn unbearable 200% of the time. Let's pick through some actual quotes, shall we?:

"He was pure sex on a hot stick."
—Basically her first thoughts upon seeing Anubis (for the first time, to her recollection). What the fuck does that even MEAN? What the fuck is a hot stick? Who? What? What does that M E A N?

"Even with all his hotness, there was an underlying dangerous element that seemed to lie just under the surface."
—First of all, 'underlying' and 'under the surface' mean the same thing. It's redundant. Second of all, this quote is on the next page immediately after the "hot stick" quote. She spends ALL THIS TIME drooling over how apparently "sexy" he is, but spends, like, 0.2 seconds describing his actual appearance. I think I remember something about black hair, but... that's about it.

—I didn't actually write it down but there's a paragraph in there somewhere about Anubis's penis "flapping in the wind" like it has goddamn wings. Jewel calls it Anubis Jr. - I guess because the author didn't actually want to say the word dick? I...don't know, but...I didn't even have to write it down because the moment itself is so horrifying.

"Anubis was drool-worthy sexy, to the zillionth degree of sexiness."
—...There she goes, drooling about his sexiness AGAIN. Must I really explain the cringe that is this quote? I don't want to.

"I wanted to rub my body on his and purr like a cat."
—I................ I just............. goodbye.
(But, HEY! Cats were viewed as Gods in ancient Egyptian culture. ;D)

"He was looking at me like I was a big juicy steak and he was starving."
—Listen. I don't like sex. I have no desire for it. I want no part of it. But even I can explain to you how unbelievably cringey and un-sexy this quote was.

"Call Maury because you don't deserve to call me daughter."
—Why.

...Moving on.
Not only is the Anubis/Jewel romance the most painful thing that I have ever had to experience, the author also decides - for some reason that I CAN'T FIGURE OUT - to throw in the tiniest, most pathetic love triangle there ever was in the history of love triangles. Jewel expresses interest in a boy named Andrew for aboooooout three seconds because he's "normal" and "human"...but that, of course, is all thrown into the wind about two pages later because Anubis iS jUsT sO sExY!!
W h y.
Listen, I can rant about these characters for the rest of time, but they weren't the only reason I absolutely... did not like this book. The author's writing, in general, isn't that great. It's actually really weird because it constantly switches from decent (not FANTASTIC, but, y'know, semi-decent) imagery and descriptions to literally no substance in the detailing at all. It's literally the weirdest thing I've ever read because the amount of 180s the descriptives did gave me actual whiplash.
Also, the writing in general is pretty choppy. The book switches between present-time and dreams/flashbacks a LOT which, hey, normally I wouldn't mind. Except it's done so abruptly that the whole experience just feels very... chunky and weird.
Overall, I'm very disappointed. The substance and potential in this plot could have been literally AMAZING - I was, like, preparing myself for Higher Being Drama and for Zeus to, like, zap people with fucking lightning and shit. Instead, though, I got... an annoying girl whose mouth is open and drooling 24/7 and a death god whose creepy stalker boyfriend levels border that of Edward Cullen.

A combination of aliens and mythology

This to me is just a ridiculous idea to mix aliens, mythology, and past lives that suprisingly works.
Jewel and Anubis aren't all love at first sight even though they are meant to be. The slow burn and addition of memories coming slowly brings you into the story and holds on.
My only problem is dang Jewel is whinny and a bit of a mess. Hopefully in the next book we finally get answers and she gives into her love.

The story draws you in from the very beginning! I love how the writer made you feel the characters in the book are right there with while you read her book. The unique story was refreshing since I normally read historical romance. Can not wait until the next book comes out it will be on my to read list!

I'm a Percy Jackson fan, so I loved this book. I can tell that Trish Beninato put a lot of thought into the plot. There are sci-fi elements mixed into the story that work perfectly, and there were several times that I was really inspired to think about where the series is going. Looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

An epically awesome new take on mythology.

First of, let me state that I’m a huge fan of mythology and lore. I also love the exploration of what if.

Now, I saw Ms. Beninato’s books floating around. The colorful colors caught my eye, & I eventually bought a book without reading the description (friends who’s opinions I trust read and loved Ms. Beninato’s work). And then I read the description. Greek and Egyptian mythology in one book? Yes please!

This science-fantasy blew me away! Oh, and a peek at Atlantis!

I loved the main character, Jewel, and how she grows in this book as she discovers the truth about her genealogy/history (No, this is nothing like Percy Jackson, Jewel is on a whole other level).

I have suspicions about her adoptive father that hope get explored during the rest of the trilogy.

And Anubis— what can I say but what a beautiful, good, man! He just jumps off the page, taking Jewel by the hand through one of his portals, and pulls you along with them.

There are a lot of side characters that are well explored & I can’t wait to see how the evolve (heh) from here!

Now excuse me while I dive in to book 2!

4.5 stars- The story hooks you immediately going in. It’s definitely unique and different from anything else I’ve read. I was a bit skeptical about the sci-fi aspect as I’m not really into that, but it added more intrigue. The characters are very well written. I love Anubis and am excited to read more of his story. I’ll admit that I was put off by the age difference between the mc and her love interest. It was a bit hard to get past at times. The plot got a little slow in the middle but got really exciting toward the end. It leaves you eager to pick up book 2 for sure. My only other complaint would be that there seemed to be some repetition of certain facts. Almost like the author may have forgotten that they’d already explained that. Ultimately I would highly recommend reading it.

**I received this as an ARC and am voluntarily reviewing**

I'm in love with this story, and I'm looking forward to book 2! Trish has the craziest, yet most brilliant imagination! I couldn't believe how well she was able to mix up mythology, aliens, past lives, the future in the present, make it funny, sweet, endearing, bold, altogether outstanding!

Jewel isn't your typical teenage girl, no matter how much she wishes it! Her past is about to take the driver's seat, when the Egyptian God of death, Anubis walks into her life and makes it harder to deny that she's really different from the other different kid's!

Jewel is the daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, who was hurried through time and space when her grandfather Zues tries to kill her. She is growing up again millennia later, and her past and present selves must come together to fulfill the prophecy. Anubis was her husband and went into stasis until her powers started emanating. Jewel feels love for Anubis and she is slowly getting her memories together with the help of Thoth and his machines. She must stay in hiding while she becomes whole, both Ares and Zues want her dead. She is the only God born in earth, and she will be the only salvation, if she and Anubus can protect themselves.

I loved this book! The opening was hat pulled me in, Jewel lives on a compound of sorts where people have enhanced abilities, she's after a normal life and so struggles to stay in school like a normal teen even though her powers have started to manifest. She's thrown in at the deep end when things start to unravel and the truth about her, her past and her life come to the forefront of her world. It is engaging, exciting and thrilling to read. I loved Jewel and Teddy and loved the pace of the story. It was amazing and I loved it!

Jewel is fast approaching her 18th birthday and longs for a normal life. But she quickly discovers that is not going to be possible, no matter how hard she wishes for it. Struggling with finding out who she really is/was and trying to piece together her missing memories is not easy.
I love this story so far. Jewel is trying really hard to make sense of everything with out losing who she currently is. Anubis is giving her space even though it's killing him to do so. They are both amazing characters and I can't wait to see what happens next.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and wow I love the combination of mythology and aliens. I am a mythology nut and love any fantasy books written with a mythology flair. So many different twist and turns that I never knew what was going to happen next and I can not wait to read the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book

Really enjoyed it.
I love the mythology vs sci-fi feel. The story was fast paced with characters I could easily connect with.
I felt Jewel’s frustration at the vague answers and wanting to know details of her past. The storyline kept me guessing and hanging to know the secrets...glad I have book 2 to jump straight into ;-)

This was a nice, easy read with a great concept and stand out characters. The writing was a bit too simplistic for my taste but it's worth the .99¢ I paid for it. Probably isn't something I would read again but if you need something light after a heavy read this will be perfect.
