They are called kareshta, the silent ones.
But the silent are waking.

Kyra has lived her life in the shadow of a powerful Grigori brother. She’s ignored her own desires for the good of her family, but an unexpected request from Thailand sends her on a mission that could change her life and alter the fate of free Grigori all over the world. Sons of the Fallen hidden in the mountains of Thailand have adapted an ancient human magic for their own purposes. Will this practice bring peace or lead to even greater danger for the Irin race?

A simple diplomatic mission sends Leo to Bangkok, but he didn’t expect to see a familiar face in surveillance photographs. He’s tried everything to drive Kyra from his mind, since he was convinced the gentle kareshta wanted to hide from the world. How did she turn up halfway across the globe, living with Grigori who may or may not be Irin allies?

Leo has bided his time. He’s given Kyra her space.

But this scribe is ready to hear a kareshta sing.

THE SILENT is a romantic fantasy, and the fifth book in the Irin Chronicles series.

Still the mind. Still the soul. Still the heart.

Kyra, one of the oldest Kareshta is in a gilded cage and the time has come for her to spread her wings and fly. Sent to Thailand on a mission to help others in her situation in return the they will help their fellow Grigori.

Kyra might seem demure but she is far from it. She has an inner strength that would rival any Irina. As the daughter of a cardinal angel she has her own powers but The Silent are still trying to find their voices. The Irina are skeptical to pass on the knowledge they have. The Rending broke a lot and it will take time to heal.

I had my difficulties with Kyra but through her development throughout the book she really started to stand out. I liked her and then I loved her but torn at the same time. She wanted to live the life she has to the fullest but she is on borrowed time.

Leo is sent to Thailand to open up communications between the Thailand Scribe house and the honorable Grigori. Finally, to his surprise he can get closer to Kyra.

Now Leo on the other hand I love Leo. He knows exactly what he wants. Kyra. And no one can stop him. He is badass with a soft and gooey center. He is absolutely adorable. I want my own Leo.

“I’m very large,” he said. “Damian says if I’m not thinking about it, I can mow through a room like an enthusiastic tank.” Kyra smiled. “I’ve never felt mowed down.” “I’m glad.”

Be still my beating heart. I wanted to wrap him up in a big bow and take him with me.

Leo & Kyra have been on a collision course for years now and the inevitable is finally happening. Each love that is created by Ms. Hunter between the main characters of the book is beautiful, unique and wonderful to experience.

Kyra is other. Leo’s heart ached for her. They try a relationship and although they are different it works. They are both vulnerable and inexperienced. Although though they are so different. Leo comes across as naïve but he is just very optimistic.

Throughout most of the books we made to believe that the Grigori are evil very few manage to lead an honorable life. But here a balance has been achieved. And I sympathize with Kostas, Sirius and the other honorable Grigori.

Beautifully written. Flawless writing and absolutely stunning. With each new book Ms. Hunter expands the Irin/Grigori world that flows well and isn't stilted. That the possibilities here are endless. What I love about these books is that there is no other man/woman drama there is no room for as they are either mated or Reshon.

One of my favorite side characters? Vasu. There is something quite childlike about him but also mature if that makes sense. He talks in riddles and is hilarious.

“I’ll let Kyra know you’re thinking about helping her brother,” Leo said. “I’m sure she’d be grateful.” Vasu disappeared and reappeared as a cat that jumped on Leo’s lap. “You try to create obligation in me. It’s an interesting theory. I told them you were smarter than you appeared,” the cat said, curling up on Leo’s lap. “Now pet me.” “Are you serious?” Narrow claws dug into Leo’s leg.

What is to come next? What I would like to see? A Grigori male and an Irina. But I'm positive no matter what Ms. Hunter will knock me off my feet.

I do have one small thing to complain about. I hope that the plot will not be a constant throughout other books that are too come. Not that I don’t love her plots I just don’t want the author to get stuck in a rut.

Oh, and another thing when we introduced to Kenneth I swear that I heard his British accent in my head. Exactly what a Brit should sound like.

Snippets from The Staff and The Blade:

“Karen is a jewel among singers,” Leo said. “I knew she’d take care of me when I arrived.” He scowled at Mala when she came through the door and sat at the table. “Unlike this one.”

Leo and Kyra stood across from one another, nervous as sheep. Mala’s eyebrows rose, and she shot Sari a barely contained smile. They’re adorable. Sari signed back, they’re clueless. Doesn’t mean they’re not adorable.

So excited.

ARC Review

The world of the Irin is so enticing.  It is epic - it crosses cultures, continents and generations. It is also tragic. The original trilogy involves a primal battle between good and evil represented by the children of fallen angels, those that are the children of Forgiven Angels (the Irin and Irina) and the Fallen Angels (the Gregori and the Kareshta).  Instead of the dichotomy of good and evil, Ms. Hunter makes the story more complex by showing us that this division is not exactly black and white. The Gregori are not purely instinctual, they can sublimate their instinct and protect their own. They are more like the Irin than originally believed.

Unknown to most and against popular belief, the Gregori have living sisters, the kareshta. Most daughters of the Fallen do not survive, but few exist and they are kept secret by their brothers from both other Gregori and Irin. Furthermore, in both societies, the female daughters of the angels are emerging.  For the Irina, they are coming forth from hiding after a tragic rendering by the Gregori decimates their population.  The Irina are re-engaging with the world, slowly but surely employing their singer’s voice along with the Irin.  The Silent focuses on the story of a kareshta following the defeat of the Gregori. The kareshta are the silent population. Until now, they have been in hiding. They are a lost generation of women with magic and power, but do not know how to access and control it.  The Irina do, but they are cautious about giving away their secrets to their former enemies.  In some ways, The Silent is the story of post-war refugees. How do you integrate them into your society? Do you grant your former adversaries full status? The kareshta are in danger of being a commodity to Irin society, where the birthrate is exceedingly low and the ratio of Irin to Irina is completely unbalanced. They represent a solution, but will they be welcomed as full citizens or something less? Kyra, our heroine says it best: “I’m asking you to treat children as if they’re not marked by evil. That’s all I’m asking. If you’re going to take those girls, don’t foster them. Adopt them. Your people want for children, and we are offering you our own.” Will the “good” (lack of a better term) Gregori, those who practice strict control over their killing instincts, and the kareshta be welcomed fully? Or will they be relegated to something less than, more like second class citizens? But as Kira reminds the Irin, “’…You are the children of the Forgiven….Congratulations on winning the blood lottery. Because that is the only difference between us.”

The gift of The Silent is Elizabeth Hunter ability to weave these deeper themes seamlessly into both a romantic and suspenseful love story. Leo is one of the younger Irin Scribes (as in, only a century or two old). Leo and Kyra meet previously and have an immediate attraction for one another. They are both sent separately to check out stories of unusual Gregori activity in Northern Thailand. Kyra is sent to help the kareshta learn to control the voices from humanity that batter inside their heads. Leo is an envoy of the Irin to help facilitate relationships between the Irin and Gregori. Because of their previous engagement, there is already an established relationship. One the hand, it negates insta-love, but it also feels a little like being dropped into the middle of Leo and Kyra’s story. Certainly, there are many obstacles for this couple to overcome to be together, both from a physical and psychological perspective, but I miss a little of the build-up and anticipation that comes from a new relationship.

Maybe because I’m an action-adventure kind of gal, I enjoy the suspense in the storyline. One of the sisters of the Gregori in northern Thailand is kidnapped and a team of Gregori and Irin go to rescue her. This escalates into a battle against a Fallen angel. Who does not love a good rescue story? Throw in a bad angel and I am hooked.

All in all, I am both surprised and pleased at where the author is taking this series. She asks difficult questions that we all can consider.

Elizabeth Hunter is a master at creating an IMAX type experience in each of her books. The sights, sounds, feels, and smells of each setting/region are brought to life by her beautiful writing, surrounding the reader and transporting them into the heart of her story, characters, and world through scenes vibrating with life.  I find myself completely immersed in her stories, surrounded by characters that entice me to laugh, cry, love, explore, and battle by their side.  And after finishing each book, just like leaving a movie theatre after a great movie, I relish the satisfaction of having just finished another spellbinding read that leaves me begging for the next one.

The Silent is a story of hope, a story of a future ripe with possibilities for so many - the Irin, the Kareshta, and yes, even the Grigori.  Their past is intertwined and laden with betrayal and mistrust, but if they are to prosper and grow, they must learn to co-exist peacefully - to trust, to accept, to have the courage to let the past go and move forward together to defeat their common enemy.  Is it possible?

At long last, readers get Leo and Kyra's story.  A relationship that seems impossible - a kareshta and an Irin warrior?  No way it will ever be accepted.  But sometimes, fate steps in to lend a helping hand.  Once again, this couple finds themselves in the same place at the same time - each on a mission for their people, each surprised to see the other.  There's no denying the attraction sizzling between them, even as danger and evil rears its ugly head.  Leo is an Irin warrior in every sense of the word, and yet there is an air of innocence about him that I adore.  He radiates goodness even as he steams full speed ahead to claim the woman who stars in his erotic dreams.  Kyra emerges from her cocoon much like a butterfly, spreading her wings to fly solo for the first time - laying claim to her independence as she accepts and embraces the full extent of her magic.  In the beginning, they reminded me of awkward, inexperienced, lovesick teenagers but awkwardness soon disappears as passion takes over.  Whew!  Suffice it to say, this may be the most erotic Irin Chronicles book yet!

The Silent is an intriguing, heart-felt story that focuses a great deal on character/relationship development, in turn enhancing an intense plot line that carries the series story arc ahead by leaps and bounds.  A strong, unique support cast introduces some new, promising characters along with a few from the past.  An epic story, The Silent would play out in an explosion of color across an IMAX screen complete with surround sound.  One can only hope!  Another great addition to the series!  A must read!

*Many thanks to the author for an arc of this book.

I feel like I have broken a trust or something, I have been reading Elizabeth Hunter's books since A Hidden Fire and have pretty much given each and every one of them a well deserved 5 Star review but this one while done as well as any of her other books just seemed to be missing the small elusive "something" that separates those exceptional "can't put them down" novels from those who are still superior reading but not quite measuring up to those other books.

The story of Leo and Kyra is an addicting slow burn romance but in this book it seemed to move at a pace that allowed me to put it aside with no "I gotta get back to that book" kind of motivation that her other books have done for me.

The is an extremely multifaceted plot and maybe that is why I felt bogged down at many places trying to see where this story was going. The adventure parts (which are really a part of every book she has written) were done very well but it seemed like they made up a much smaller part of the book and trying to cover a multitude of issue between the Irin and the free children of the Fallen just got too much into the minutia to be crammed into one book (and some of them I felt were not solved at the end)

Bottom Line: This was a great book, the romance was good and the overarching story was excellent but I think it was the pace and too many pages of nothing really happening that make it less stellar than her previous efforts. Her books usually start slow and build into a crescendo for this reader but this one never got to that exceptional height I have become accustomed to from her. So while this might have been an exceptional book for some other less talented writer it was a bit of a disappointment from someone so talented that has set the bar for her own works so high. 4 Stars and wish I could give it 5 just for all those exceptional books before it.

If ever there was a paranormal or supernatural world that I could immerse myself in and experience, the Irin world would be my only pick. Hunter is a brilliant writer, someone who can take something supernatural and blend it smoothly with the world we live in. Her stories take the reader to exciting places around the globe, giving us a glimpse into something new and exciting, all the while taking us on an adventure that keeps you turning the pages as fast as you can.
In this installment of the Irin Chronicles, there is even more of a blurring of the historical boundary lines, one that has so strictly been black and white. I loved that the reader gets to relearn the new reality of the Irin and Grigori worlds right alongside those in the thick of it. New truths are discovered and lines are crossed to protect the innocent and bring balance to chaos. If that wasn't enough, we finally have the epic love story I had been hoping for, for two very deserving characters. Kyra and Leo have been in the story for a while and watching them grow and fall hard for each other is beautiful. This book is about their love story, but it feels like it encompasses more. Their story blurs the lines drawn by history right in the presence of so many life long enemies. They create an alliance with their love that burns bright, one that leaves your breathless and satisfied in the end.
The love story is perfect. The characters are flawed, yet relatable. The alliances are brilliant, and the world Hunter has created becomes more complex and exciting. Add in a good dose of wanderlust and you have yet another winner to add to the Irin Chronicles. So much has been answered in this story but the endless mysteries still linger. I am hoping for MANY more books in this series and even more glimpses into Leo and Kyra's happily ever after.

Hunter does it again! By this point in the series, the world building is more or less established, meaning we get to focus more on the characters and their relationships. This book was definitely a little spicier than most of the previous installments in this series, but it's a well balanced spice. It was a delight to read about a kareshta as a heroine. Who would have thought, after reading the first book in the series, that readers would be championing grigori? It just goes to show what a talented writer can do with a well-wrought world. As the hero of this book, the Irin Leo, states: there is not a one of use who is all good or all bad. We are all a mix of the two extremes, even those we would call enemy.

WOW! *wipes away a sappy tear* Just, WOW!

I just finished the book and I already want more. EH does it again, with a beautiful setting, witty dialogue, and TASTEFUL, steamy bedroom scenes. Who wouldn't want to be a Reshon after reading those moments?!?

We learn a lot more about the Kareshta, the challenges they have faced, as well as a glimpse or two into their power. And we also learn about two more of the Fallen, and their dastardly deeds.

Leo & Kyra are beautiful together. Leo is everything a girl could want in a boyfriend/mate, and Kyra's selflessness and strength are frustrating yet commendable. I can not wait to read more about them, and learn how the Kareshta will continue to grow.

Oh and did I mention Vasu? ... no? Well, we get to see his trickster feline self as well ;)

4.5/5

The Silent is an intriguing read as it expands the Irin mythology considerably.

I love how things stopped being black and white. Not all Grigori are evil, some choose to fight their nature and protect their sisters, kareshta.

Not all kareshta are meek and helpless. Some fought the tide of madness and won, others succumbed to it and went dark.

Kyra has been a bit of a mystery to me. She is one of the most powerful and oldest kareshta living, but knowing all that she accepts that at any moment she can die and turn to dust. And she is tired of her overprotective brother smothering her and ready to take risks.

So, when there is a chance to teach kareshta in Thailand how to protect their minds in exchange for a technique of a sacred tattoo which would increase her brothers' control over their nature she is more than ready to take it.

Leo, whom we got to know a little bit from the previous books in the series, is the sweetest teddy bear. Honestly, there is not a mean bone in his body. He is big, beautiful and kind, and I could think of no one else more perfect for Kyra, who needed a bit of coaxing out of her shell.

Not only these two meet in Thailand, they do it in one of my favorite places ever, Chiang Mai. Having lived there, I know that this place is pure magic, and Miss Hunter managed to capture its unique atmosphere and vibrancy really well. I certainly squealed in few places of the narrative, I just couldn't contain my excitement.

Leo and Kyra are absolutely lovely together. They are sweet, considerate and just the right bit heartbroken, sexy, passionate and single-minded when needs be.

In fact, I haven't met a couple I haven't liked yet in Miss Hunter's novels, and hope I never will.

There is a healthy balance between romance and an overall story arc in this book, which is why it's a paranormal fantasy rather than paranormal romance. The pace is brisk, the world-building is excellent and the characters both main and secondary are very charismatic and memorable.

As usual, pure magic. Recommended.

The Irin Chronicles is a fascinating, imaginative series that hooked me from the start. It deserves to be on bestseller lists. Leo and Kyra are characters who have appeared in previous books in the series, and we have seen glimpses of their fascination with each other as the chronicles have unfolded. Leo is the strong, silent type, an Irin warrior descended from the Forgiven Angels. Kyra is Kareshta, or one of the Silent Ones, a daughter of a Fallen Angel.
The Kareshta are plagued by the voices of Souls and have had no skills to block them until recently. Kyra has long been sequestered by her twin brother, Kosta, to protect her from these voices. Now she has the skills to manage the constant hounding of these voices, Kyra has been able to go out more into the world and to become the woman she was meant to be. She is asked by one of her brothers, Sirius, to go to Thailand to liaise with other Kareshta in order to teach them what she has learned.
Leo, a scribe from Istanbul, has been helping other Scribe houses to liaise with Kareshta and their brothers, the Grigori. He has also gone to Thailand and is shocked to see Kyra on security footage. He follows Kyra to Chang Mai and the story unfolds from there.
Leo and Kyra are gentle, beautiful characters who deserve a chance to be together. Now that Kyra is away from her over-protective twin, Leo might have a chance to find out if she is his Reshon or soulmate.
This book is set in one of my favourite places in the world, Thailand. Elizabeth Hunter writes books that tell amazing stories and have engaging well-developed characters. As I read 'The Silent', I felt I was back in Thailand whilst I was brought back to the memories of the landscapes, the temples, markets, food and the welcoming Thai people and their culture.
I have enjoyed all the books I have read by this author and can't recommend her highly enough. She deserves more accolades, but like the characters in this book, is unsung.

Dive into the marvelous and exotic world of Elizabeth Hunter’s latest Iron Chronicle, The Silent, a terrific novel led by a swoon-worthy couple.

They go about their days silent. The Grigori kareshta women speak little and offer little, as their primary task is fending off trillions of voices from drowning their minds. Kareshta Kyra, too, was once utterly silent herself. Since she’s learned to cage the voices, her aim is to teach her sisters to do the same, a beautiful, yet challenging task. Kyra’s journey to Thailand brings her to a Grigori compound aiming to do good and reunites her with the Scribe warrior, Leo, who’s passion for Kyra only increases when they again meet.

Hunter’s The Silent is both multi-layered and fascinating, simultaneously an exquisite love story and a fierce mission to save a kidnapped Gregori sister.

Leo is divine. A man of great optimism, humor, and determination, I could spend days with him. He’s a fitting match for the equally determined, elegant, and brilliant Kyra. The Thai setting, both exotic and fascinating, makes the perfect background for Kyra’s and Leo’s love story.

A masterful writer, Hunter never fails to please. Her books are an automatic one-click for me. The Silent is easily one of my favorite books of the year, in part because it's the first conscious tale (Hunter’s readers will understand) of a Grigori and Scribe’s union, and because I fell in love with Leo and Kyra. Their journey of self discovery and of love will keep you up way past your bedtime.

Beautiful

Just like every other piece Elizabeth Hunter has written. Beautiful. I already loved Leo. Now I have a whole new group to love. Kyra, Sirius, Aylah, Ginny, Niran, Sura, Prija. All of them!! I was moved by this book, as I am by all for EH's. The pure love and romance portrayed. And the power of it. The fight of those discriminated against. Overcoming adversity. I love it all. I feel like a new person every time. Easily one of my top 5 books read his year. I can't wait for more!!!

Elizabeth Hunter has some of the best dialogue rhythm ever! This is another example. The story was lovely and she gave readers a deeper look into the Irin world that she created. The love story was sweet, but I found myself more interested in the other characters. I'm looking forward to more in this world. Keep writing, Elizabeth!

I got lucky and was allowed an early view of this story. In honest truth I have always favoured one of the author's other series, and have not read every one of the preceding novels in the Irin Chronicles. However I have to say that this has been one of my favourites of ALL of the books that Elizabeth has written. The fact that I have missed a previous book did not detract from my enjoyment at all.

I've never been one for music with reading, and yet throughout this story I continuously found myself humming the chorus to ' Young Love' by Connie Francis, which then morphed into 'Love is a Many Splendid Thing' from the beginning of Grease, with full orchestral accompaniment and crashing ocean waves.

Leo and Kyra are established characters from previous books and it was a case of when not if, with these two. We are also introduced to a whole raft of new characters, and some of these definitely fell into my "would like to know better" list.

I am a member of the grammar and continuation police, and there were a couple of points that I would have preferred not to see, but it's not going to put me off from saying that I loved this book and now want to read it again, perhaps with the music playing for real.

Captivating and brilliant this story transports you to not only a vibrant destination, but immerses you into the budding new relationship between Irin scribe and kareshta that had me turning the pages eager with anticipation and filled with butterflies as if experiencing the dance of new love myself. While the story felt different in part from Hunter's other books, it fit so perfectly with the characters of Leo and Kyra making every page just so right for the narrative being told and was delivered in the amazingly transcendent world that Hunter built within our own. Hunter's world building skills have always been one of the big draws for me with her books and that skill seems to forever grow as everything is blended so seamlessly it is hard to believe this world does not actually exist within our own.

Since the moment Leo and Kyra met I've been itching for their story. Elizabeth Hunter did not disappoint with the one that flowed from her mind to the page.

A must read for lovers of paranormal/urban fantasy and romance.

4.5 Stars... Kyra has lived a life of isolation, fear, and oppression hiding away from the pain of thoughts and touch... Leo is known for his charm, charisma, and wit not to mention his strength and passion; always searching for his Reshon and holding true to the plan fate has in store for him... Two people searching for peace, happiness, and a home may find it all in one another, but at what cost... A journey of forgiveness, understanding, acceptance, and love; to find a new normal in a world that is forever changed... The line between good and evil is blurred and prejudices must be challenged if peace is ever to be achieved:)

Man it seems like these books get better and better!
Leo is my favorite so far. And Kyra was a great lovable heroine. I am abscessed w/ this series and this book was amazing. I literally did not move all day unless I had to and just read. Until I finished it.
I listened to the audios of the other books but read this one and I was a little worried it wouldn’t be as good but it absolutely was just as amazing!
I’m sure I’ll start the next one soon.

Elizabeth Hunter has created yet another fascinating chapter in the Irin world. With complex characters facing supernatural challenges (in my mind, analogous to our human ones) and dealing with heart-pounding emotional journeys, this book is nearly impossible to put down. We learn more about characters we already love as well as meet new ones we will grow to cherish. I was deliciously surprised at how this much-anticipated romance unfolded and drawn much more deeply into the intriguing and increasingly nuanced Irin world.

Beautiful story for a long awaited couple Leo and Kyra. Some fantastic new characters and lots of my favourite fallen angel. Can't wait for the next one!

This book is the most epic romance I've read all year. Leo & Kyra's love for each other can be felt through the pages. As much as I loved learning about the Grigori and the Kareshta the love between them held me enthrall throughout. I felt as though I was in Thailand and apart of the romance which is one of the many reasons Elizabeth Hunter will always be one my favorite go-to and re-read authors!!!

So I haven't read an Elizabeth Hunter book that I didn't absolutely love and "The Silent" is no exception. I love where she's taken this story. I love the new settings of Thailand and Myanmar. I love how she deepens her exploration of previously introduced characters. I love how these characters and their interactions continue to explore the evolving society of the Irin. And I love the romance. This is not a romance of children or teenagers, but a romance of adults who know what they want, but who also carry very real baggage into their relationship. Very nicely done (again). I can't wait for the next book, story or novella.

Epic!!!!!

That's enough for a review, right? In all seriousness I'm in love with the Irin series and I honesty hope she never stops writing them (well, except to write the Benzin full length....).

Another Irin masterpiece

Elizabeth Hunter is one of my favourite authors and I love the Irin World, quite a different world from many other fantasy worlds. This is a lovely love story, with an undercurrent of evil from the Grigori and Fallen.

This is some of this author's best world building to date, and that is really saying something. She deftly explores the idea of "other" and discrimination without breaking the fantasy genre. I really can't wait for the next one.

Another fantastic addition to the Iron Chronicles

Loved the expansion of this series exploring the lives of the Kareshta and Free Grigori that we learned about in the previous books. Leo and Kyra were both fantastic characters to root for. The humour, intelligence, and depth of all the characters, both main and peripheral, are as brilliant as every creation of Elizabeth Hunters. The ending of this one was particularly Joyfull. Can't wait for the next in this series.

Oh Leo

I loved Leo since the first book. And how can you not feel for Kyra. The two of them are perfect for each other.

Story - 4 1/2 stars
Narration - 5 stars

The Silent is another wonderful addition to the Irin Chronicles. Main characters this time around are Leo (my favourite scribe after Malachi), and Kyra, who is Kareshta. I adored these 2 already from their appearances in the previous books, so I was excited to see what challenges they would face coming together......especially from Kyra's overprotective twin brother.

Narration by Aaron Shedlock was fabulous, happy to see that he narrates the next 2 books in the series which I have ready and waiting to go in my audible library.
