Min is a microbe. She is small. Very small. In fact so small that you'd need to look through a microscope to see her. Or you can simply open this book and take Min on an adventure to amazing places she's never seen before—like the icy glaciers of your tooth or the twisted, tangled jungle that is your shirt. The perfect book for anyone who wants to take a closer look at the world.
I write science books, usually for children; they've been translated into about twenty languages and won some awards. I live in Melbourne, Australia with my family. Sometimes, after they go to bed, I play my guitar a little. I have degrees in microbiology and in the history and philosophy of science, a diploma in library studies, and a day job that has very little to do with any of the above. You can also find me on Facebook (too often for my own good), my blog (occasionally) and Twitter (rarely).
Neo and I learned so much about microbes in this book, particularly where they are located and how easily they can be transferred from place to place. With some fascinating extreme close-ups, we were able to see the surface of teeth, fabric, skin, and book pages, all of which contain millions of microbes. Neo was especially interested (and grossed out) to see his teeth and skin up close. As the title of the book suggests, it is likely not a good idea to lick the book, or any surface, for you never know what lurks there. Now then, where is that lollipop I have been waiting for all day?!
Great first book on microbes! I would categorize this book as a STEM read for small children. I think that it is important for young readers to get interested in reading about STEM subjects at an early age. This book was just the right combination of information and humor, presented in a way that is captivating to young readers.

While studying to become a Librarian I met a lovely man with dreams of working in libraries who, unknown to me, had been working away as an author for years, filling the shelves of the institutions he hoped to work for.
That man (and author) is Idan Ben-Barak, writer of The Invisible Kingdom and Why Aren't Are dead Yet? two very interesting and funny pop-science books on microbes and the immune system respectively. While these titles are for adults Ben-Berak has recently turned his substantial skills towards children's books, to great success.
Working with the artist behind the internationally renowned 'Dumb Ways to Die' campaign (Julian Frost), Ben-Barak has written a real winner of a children's book that will delight any child, while showing them how the world of microbes around them works.
Do Not Lick this Book is a fantastic children's introduction to the world of microbiology, full of creative, funny and gross things for children to enjoy while they learn. Like most kids I was fascinated by gross stuff so this exploration of the germs all around us (and in us) would have really appealed to me.
I don't have children myself, but I've given this book as a gift and my friends kids love it. If you have, or know, children this is a great book to read with them - it's very popular in the public library I work in!
Disclaimer: I know the author, and he's a great guy. Judging from the other reviews here though, my five star rating is pretty much in line with community perceptions of his book, despite my bias :)
Ok, I was going to do 4 stars because I usually reserve my 5 stars on picture books for the ones both I and the children would want to reread, I don't necessarily think this one is a rereader...could be wrong I could see kids sitting and looking through it again, but as I sat down to write the review, the little thing they added on the back just made me shake my head and say, nope, it deserves 5 stars for cleverness. We even read the author/illustrators bios....I guess that means a book's excellent when you just keep reading those too and not just close the book. Anyway, it was a clever mix of an interactive story, science, humor, and microphotography. The interactive part is perfect for the prek-k set, but my 12 year old even snorted a laugh a couple of times and all the kids were intrigued. When I picked this one up, the cover made me figure it was going to be a version of Press Here or This is a Ball since that was the cover design sort of draw--which my 5 year old enjoys the books you touch and shake to "make" things happen, and it did have that aspect, but I was super elated to find it taught science too with cool science photos and my own enjoyment rose up several notches.
This is a horrible book to read during the COVID-19 pandemic! My wife and daughter were totally cringing as the book instructed you to touch the page then your teeth, your clothes, your belly button, and the book again with nary a mention of handwashing! Aside from the title, there is no discussion how the germs starring in the book -- E. coli and streptococcus -- can cause you to get sick.
Really strong explanation of microbes for very young audience. Funny and engaging text with enjoyable illustrations, it helps to demystify science in a fun and engaging way.
Informative but revolting. I can see kids--especially those with an early interest in science--digging this book but as a germophobe myself I just want to go wash my hands and everything I own. Interesting structure though--sort of an older interpretation of Herve Tullet's interactive books.
My 4yo last night, picking this up and holding it out to me: I hate this book. Me: Okay, we don’t have to read it again. 4yo (still holding it out): Ohhhhh all right. Me: All right what? You want to read it? 4yo: No, “Ohhhhh all right.” Me: What does that mean? Read it or not read it? 4yo: “Ohhhhh all right” is what you say when you don’t want to do something but the other person says “Pretty please?” I said I hate this book. Me (finally getting my line): Pretty please can we read it? 4yo: Ohhhhh all right. (Hands me the book and climbs into my lap)
She won’t touch the “germs” as the book directs (I have to do it) but she is DEFINITELY fascinated. (Me? I love it, of course!)
Really fun. I can see Pre-3rd liking this book. The older kids will love the close up pictures and the younger kids will enjoy the interactive parts. Interactive Microbes

WARNING...Do not lick this book: It’s full of germs. Well, the title effectively grossed me out, so I therefore know that my students will love this book. In it, they will learn about microbes. They will get to experience cavities, dead skin, a dirty shirt and the like, completely zoomed in to the tiniest fibers. It is at once incredibly cool and icky. I never really thought of myself as a germaphobe but this book certainly took me there. I have felt torn as to whether or not I should add this book to my library because I kept imagining all of the yucky things that will happen to it before it gets returned...but isn’t that the risk we run with any library book?
This nonfiction gem represents the combined work of an author who created humorous banter: Idan Ben-Barak, the illustrator of the cute little microbes: Julian Frost, and Linnea Rundgren, who took the amazing microscope photos. At the very end, the reader gets to see what the microbes really look like and their scientific names. While I had difficulty shaking the icky feelings this book gave me, it was also irresistible. I will without a doubt be adding this book to my K-5 library where we already share many a microbe-ick!
This is SUCH a clever, yet simple little book that educates children about microbes. Even from the title it has you giggling and guessing... With its fun characters (who each represent a different microbe), its colourful pages, the fascinating photographs and its quirky approach, it takes you on an interactive adventure, which I couldn't help but join in with! It's endearing and informative all at the same time and this book will definitely get children loving science and asking lots of questions. I very much look forward to using it with my class one day!
Gave me the heebie jeebies! I love the fact that it makes kids (and me) aware of germs on your teeth and things, and it's got really cute illustrations (which I learned were drawn by the Dumb Ways to Die guy. Which is still one of my favorite things. Lol) I also loved the little touch of "hey if you're gonna lick this book, lick it here!" Since I read this book back in the discharge are of my library, I uh, wiped that part down with a lysol wipe. Lol
Fun and interactive book about germs. It also includes microscope pictures of everyday objects. Great to introduce the concept of germs to younger children.
A cool new picture book that introduces children to the concept of microbes and microscopy all in one go. There's kind of an interactive element, where you touch certain parts to pick up the microbes and take them with you, but it's not quite on the same level as other interactive picture books (but it is more accurate).
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Great book introducing microbes to youngsters - amazing images and cartoons. We have read it to Mr 3 so many times, in fact the first time we read it he asked for it 5 times over. Loved it.
