Parenting “demystified” by three guys who have no kids.
Finally, a definitive and reliable manual that demystifies the complicated world of parenting while delivering crucial tips and sage advice—all from three guys who make comics instead of children. This informative guide for breeders tackles all the big parenting issues: Finding messages in your alphabet soup, drawing the perfect hand turkey, getting away with kidnapping, telling your kids you don't love them anymore, and making out with your kid's best friend's dad.
Cartoonists Kris Wilson, Rob DenBleyker, and Dave McElfatrick combine all of their knowledge and experience, or lack thereof, for a laugh-out-loud, labor-inducing look into the world of parenthood through the sick and twisted lens of Cyanide & Happiness comics.
I love the Cyanide & Happiness webcomic, it is almost always funny. The collection made me realize that I love the version of this webcomic curated by the internet and my friends. So I only actually see the good comics they produce. Sadly while a great topic as they have made some good family / child centric comics none of those were included here. The "advice" part on the opposite page from the comic is not funny.
Did not like, do not recommend. The art gets the book one star.
This book is a short collection of Cyanide and Happiness strips related to parenting which can be found for free on explosm.net, each of which is preceded with 'advice' on raising children by the three of the authors, none of whom have children and rightfully warn their readers not to take seriously. Like many of their strips, the ones here were, for me, outrageously hysterical. However, if you are a prudish bluenose, I would advise you to stay away from these cartoons as they are very heavy in black in blue humor. Hopefully, if you're not, go right ahead and give it a shot since it's a quick read which can be easily finished within less than an hour.
The guys who are behind what is probably the funniest comic series currently on Earth decide to offer their wisdom on parenting. Hilarity ensues.
PS. There is a disclaimer at the end of the book warning the reader against trying anything that is suggested within the book. I say forget the disclaimer and do try everything. Keep a log of the results and then publish it. I'd read it for sure!
I have enjoyed Cyanide & Happiness cartoons here and there, enough to try out this book when I found it on sale. Despite only casually consuming Cyanide & Happiness comic strips as I encounter them, I had seen several of the strips in this book before, and this book appears to be a cash grab involving reusing old strips with additional narration pages in between. The book fails to form a real narrative, and the additional writing is way over the top and not nearly as funny as the comic strips, just entirely over the top, with little comedic value. Getting though this book was unpleasant and tedious. I think in the future, I will skip further Cyanide & Happiness books, and just enjoy the occasional strip, since this is the second book I didn't enjoy, so it clearly wasn't a fluke.
Cyanide & Happiness, I quite enjoy their comics even if a lot of them are on the border of : Should I laugh at this, or is that not OK to do? :P My boyfriend also loves their comics, and we decided we both wanted this book by them. About parenting, well, "parenting" as neither of the group have any kids. The book is split up in comics and then text talking about the subject of the comic. From adoption to sending fishes to heaven by flushing them through the toilet, to kidnapping. All sorts of topics will pass by and will make you laugh, frown, wonder if you should laugh, and more. And remember: Don't try any of this book at home. :P Definitely would recommend this one.
This book is on par for the guys who write C&H. I love that they picked out all the comics relevant to having a child and put it together in one book. As a former child myself, and hopefully a future mother, I know I'll be turning to this book for good advice on what not to do.
If you've read this popular web comic, you won't be surprised by the strips in this book. They are dark, disturbing, and a little twisted, but still funny. Some of these were new to me, but most I'd seen floating around online. This collection also included satirical parenting advice, which I honestly could have done without. It was a bit long-winded, and didn't add much to the book (even though it was a solid half of the book).
The Cyanide and Happiness brand of humor isn't for everyone, to be sure, so I'd suggest reading a few strips online before committing to a whole collection of them.
I just love Cyanide and Happiness. There are so many one-liners to love in this, but, honestly, the thesis quote seems the best fitting as I write this review for no one. The art and humor of this series isn't for everyone. Not all panels are winners. They still tickle my funny bone and I still laugh at this. Especially the quick setup guide that this begins with.
Not the best book, a few comics had me laughing pretty hard, but overall I found this book kinda lacklustre. Don't bother reading the actual writing in this book, it comes off very douchey and dudebro humour, which takes away from the charm of the actual comics. I admit that after a few pages I just stopped reading it altogether and just read the comics. The comics are enjoyable and I like reading their comics online, so the book was rather disappointing. I expected more comics strips tbh.
I am the audience this was marketed for, and they missed their mark. I have seen a comic paired with an paragraph/story done really well. That was not the case here. The side stories made everything even worse than if they didn't try to elaborate on their original joke. If this was the first piece of work I picked up by Cyanide & Happiness, I wouldn't be coming back.
This book is hilarious. If you know cyanide and happiness you know you are in for some good laughs. Not only is it filled with different cartoon strips that we all know and love, it is also filled with “advice” for raising your kid. Whether you have kids or work with kids or don’t ever plan on having kids you can still appreciate the jokes in here.
Enjoyed the comic part but not much the “advice” page that goes with it. As usual with cyanide and happiness it is a black humour that it’s quite extreme (which is ok) but this time the story tries to be funnier than it actually is.
Signature humor that cracks you up and be shocked that it cracks you up at at the same time. As a parent, this will hit home hard. If it's too late for contraception, this book will do to make you feel better :p
A bunch of Cyanide and Happiness comics that can be found in other collections, interspersed with horrible advice on parenting. The "advice" got real old and too long real quick. I guess I'm just here for the funny cartoons, most of which were not new.
From the brilliant and twisted minds behind Cyanide and Happiness, this book is sure to get a laugh out of fans. Hopefully looking forward to similar works such as this.
Bad content and very inappropriate, sadly poisonous in most pictures and dialogues, truly a humiliating unhappy reading experience for anyone who has consciousness.
