This volume is mostly dedicated to the introduction of Yoh's father, Mikihisa Asakura, as he wishes to train Ren's team to a secret art that will help them catch up to Yoh's training. Unfortunately, things get out of hand and a battle follows with more of Hao's pawns. Brutal and action-packed, this story-arc could've been formidable if it weren't for the deus ex machina at the end that sort of kills the momentum, unless seen as an epic entrance...

Yours truly,

Now the tournament is in full swing and our heroes have to power up and learn new skills to be able to match and beat Hao and his henchmen. Let's go buddies it's interesting so let's keep on reading.

I have always loved comics, and I have I can. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and hope always to love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.

Yoh Asakura not only sees dead people, he talks and fights with them, too. That’s because Yoh is a shaman, a traditional holy man able to interact with the spirit world. Yoh is now a competitor in the Shaman Fight, a tournament held every 500 years to decide who will become the Shaman King and shape humanity’s future. Having arrived on the island of Tokyo, Yoh and his friends break into teams of three for the first round of the Shaman Fight. But as the tournament progresses, Hao’s power and cruelty terrify and enrage the other competitors. Then comes a shocking revelation-

Yoh and Hao are twin brothers!

Ever since Amazon linked up with comiXology, so that readers could get comics, graphic novels and manga on their kindles, I have been meaning to check out what they had. Under Amazon Prime Reading you get a number of titles for free and this comiXology original is one such series.

The epic saga continue with Yoh having told the gang that Hao is his twin brother who escaped being killed at birth. As they come to terms with this new truth, Ren, Horohoro and Joco are confronted by a mysterious figure who wants to teach Ren the secrets of the Ultra Senji Ryakketsu. When they realise who this mysterious stranger is it comes as a shock. There are also other forces observing the meeting; which could spell disaster for them all.

Easy to read and engaging, I enjoyed this and it felt just like reading a paperback manga, even on Kindle, as you have to click through the book backwards. A nice little touch. A solid 4 stars again as the story ramps up the action!

I particularly liked this one.
There's something about Ren that really resonates with me.
Even tho I aspire to be like Yoh (really understanding and relaxed) I'm more of a Ren: stubborn, emotional and a bit of an ego.
His downfall here marks an amazing point, like when Vegeta shows up married to Bulma.
He became great after this.
And it's always nice to see Yoh pissed off.
Also... The numerical speech. Yeah... So true.

Ren and his team see few ways of defeating Hao in the Shaman Fight, but perhaps some advice and training from Mikihisa could change their tune... Takei wrings out the most of his character with this enjoyably energetic entry in the "Shaman King" series. If Ren can only let his pride go, his team may have a chance of surviving.

Looks like the numeric power level shit is not only here to stay, but also firmly established as significant to Hao, his plan, and the Shaman Fight in general.

Aside from that somewhat-negative element, the volume is quite nice. Yoh's dad fights Ren to the point of prompting Ren to learn Yoh's dad's moves on the fly, which sets him up to kinda-sorta stand his ground against a revived Peyote, as well as the turban guy and fat Chinese guy. But he gets his ass kicked.

Peyote's giant Oversoul is pretty cool. The Chinese guy's panda O.S. in its splitting gong blade is just ridiculous, in a good way (that fucking cartoony angry panda face!).

The volume ends with a series of two-page spreads of Yoh using Spirit of Sword to one-shot Hao's men, which is pretty cool as well.

In the style that Hiroyuki Takei presents these battles and stronger opponents, we see a new range of strength. This volume is a weird (or maybe better word is “tough”) book to evaluate. For me it is different as I have seen both tamer and more violent manga, but this volume seemed to be a bit crueler in its violence. Was I bothered? No, but I read this series with a different mindset because I know my daughter is reading it as well. I am not trying to say it has extreme violence, but this volume seems a bit higher than most of the previous ones. Okay…well maybe in the end it’s not the violence itself but who it’s done too. With that, I will exclaim everyone who has been reading the series should be itching to get to the next volume.

This volume initially focuses on Yoh's father, as he looks to train Ren and his team with his methods, to aid them in the fight against Hao. This makes for a thrilling battle, before Hao's team enters to battle Ren, Joco and Horohoro, leaving us in suspense as to how it will all turn out.

Mikihisa did what he had to do

The stakes are getting higher and although the odds aren't in our MCs favour, they won't give up. I'm in awe of this series and excited to see where it leads.

This made me like Ren a bit more, it’s a very Ren focused volume so I wonder why Yoh was on the cover cause he’s only spliced in a couple chapters and the end. We meet some characters I was interested about and get more info and mystery of Hao.

AAAAHHHHHH

Okay, so learning more about Yoh's dad was cool. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his story. I'm frustrated with where I'm at in the story.

3/5: idk why the adults are so badass but we don't see a lot of them? like I get the story is about the kids but they already seem stronger than some of the main cast

It seems everything before from the start of volume 10 to the one before this one has been loosely included in the anime.

Excited to find out how the story plays out in the manga!

I've been sort of on the fence about how much I like this series, because I find it difficult to connect with any of the characters so far. Then in this book someone received a wound that should have been almost immediately fatal, but is still hanging on. If the blow had hit a little lower I could understand hanging on like this, but where it hit, it makes no sense that the person is still alive. And continues to be alive for way longer than is feasibly possible given the severity of the wound, while others are battling and talking in the vicinity about how they don't have time and they need to get this person healed ASAP.

Despite this flaw (as I perceive it), on top of not being able to connect with the characters, I'm going to keep reading it because I want to see it through. And see how the heck they manage to explain away and fix this one.

Where as, vol 16 had all the drama, this volume feels like it's saying "we are now returning to our regularly scheduled battles".
