Christophe Bec is the writer of over fifty graphic novels. His flagship series as a writer, Shrine, has sold several hundred thousand copies worldwide. He is also the author of the comics Prometheus, Carthago, Darkness, Bunker, and Aéropostale.
We've morphed away from the search for prehistoric sharks to the search for Atlantis. There's still the occasional giant shark attack but they seem to serve no purpose than an excuse so they can put a shark on the cover. For what's billed as a complete story in 5 parts, this has a very unsatisfactory ending. The whole story to this point feels like prologue.
A bit of an unsatisfying ending, but it looks as though the story will continue, or at least there plans for that at one time.
This was a good series with good art, and something different than traditional American comics. What started out as a Jaws type horror story with a giant shark morphed into a search for Atlantis and an entire race of aquatic humans. I really would have preferred more of a horror story, but it was still entertaining.
If you enjoy underwater sci fi and horror along the lines of The Abyss, this is probably something you'll like.
So we ARE now half way through the series and as such there are some answers to be made (I would not expect them all since there are 5 more books to go). However just as you thought that the story was peaking (as is sometimes the case in long running story arc based series) we find new characters being introduced - or at the very least their importance being revealed.
Again the Meg and the deep oceans steal the show but then again I think that should be the case after all there are a lot of plot devices that could (and I suspect have been) applied in different locations and scenarios - so what makes this work so very well - yes its those very things.
So any fan of the mysteries of the deep will feel drawn to this book and I cannot blame them its great fun even if at such a short book its all over far too soon/
It's clear from the beginning that Bec is going places with this story. What started as a chase for extinct species, turned into a quest for the lost civilization of Atlantis. The little girl with the gills gave it away earlier. I'm just wondering how he will connect cryptozoology and Atlantis. Have to admit that this reminds of adventures of Martin Mystère which I read as I child. Did Bec was inspired by them?
I think my mistake with this series was assuming that it was building up to a climax, like a blockbuster movie, when really it's more like the waves, rolling back and forth, a slow motion shark opera. In this one they find a new city. Animals and objects are depicted beautifully.
It’s inexplicable how you have a girl with gills in this story & she’s never in the water. She’s in Antarctica now. But she does get dunked in a pool which saves her. Why’d it take so long to figure out putting the girl with gills would heal her? Dumb. What a waste...
