The illustrations are not exactly my taste, but the story itself is very energetic and captures the emotional state of kindergartners well. I first encountered the book during a public reading in front of almost 100 3-to-6-year-olds, and they were very engaged and interested the entire time.

There is great silliness in this 2012 book originally published in Swedish and now available in English. Poor Pig. He's lonely in his pen. He gazes with longing at the children at school. How he wishes he could go, too. When Pig makes his escape the children abet him in his dream and soon he is living the life he always desired. Despite distractions, however, the teachers eventually catch on and Pig is relegated to his former home again. Still, the friends he has made do not forsake him. While he cannot visit them, they can visit him. This is a lighthearted romp with bright and expressive watercolor and ink illustrations.

Weiß nicht so richtig, warum ich dieses Buch so liebe, aber vielleicht, weil es einfach mal ein bisschen anders ist. Die Geschichte eines einsamen Schweins, was von Kindern in der Kita versteckt wird, hat etwas Freches und überhaupt nicht Moralisches, aber ohne in Beliebigkeit abzudriften. Das wird am Ende dadurch gekrönt, dass die Erzieherinnen die Kinder zum Schwein bringen, damit sie "was lernen über Natur und so" aber lieber erstmal Spaß haben. Große Empfehlung!

This is my 16th book of the pandemic. I enjoyed the book, which I found true to its Swedish roots. However, I'm not sure my current batch of 1st graders will enjoy it overall. It's not a bad book, just not the right book for this current class. I'm keeping it in my read-aloud shelf for the right class.

Супер добър пример за забавна детска книжка, на която много дечица биха се смели, смели... Прасенцето се чувства само в своята кочинка, затова иска да иде при децата в детската градина. В началото всичко върви добре и учителките не го забелязват, но после той започва да прави своите прасешки неща... :-) Открита в Прага.

A lonely pig longs for company, and his loneliness is made even more difficult because he lives not far from the school and sees all the children playing outside. When he breaks free, the children hide him and help him spend the day with them. When Pig is finally found out and banished, he feels even worse since now he knows just what he has been missing. Ultimately, things turn out just fine with the teachers bringing the children outside and apologizing for sending him away. The illustrations capture the pure delight with which Pig participates in the students' activities. This one was originally published in Sweden and is just as delightful here. This one was fun to read and fun to share.

When the loneliest pig in the world sneaks into a classroom with the help of the students, lives are changed forever. This sweet story of unlikely friendships and learning experiences will capture the interest of animal lovers. The colored pencil illustrations do a great job of capturing the energy of a classroom and provide plenty of details to keep young kids engaged as they are listening to the story.
