Why would I want to be married to an alien?

I should not have applied to TerraMates. The idea was crazy. I'm a young woman, in the prime of my life.

But I was desperate.

***** 4 Stars *****

Lately I've been reading a lot of dark mafia romances. So Water World Warrior provided me with the perfect break from all that. It's a fun light read with romance and adventure.

Ashlyn takes care of three younger brothers. One of her brothers gets into a bad situation by owing a dangerous group a lot of money. To keep her family safe, Ash signs up for TerraMates. TerraMates matches human women to wealthy alien men. Ash plans on using the money paid by TerraMates to get rid of the debt.

Nat is a scientist. As water levels continue to increase, he wants to create a solution so that people do not have to leave their homes and become refugees. But because of the corruption in his world, he is a wanted man due to pirating. He's not a bad pirate. He makes sure the goods go to the refugees.

When he gets caught in hot water, he lies and tells the officials that he's taking a short cut to pick up his fiance. The officials tell him to show proof of marriage at a later time, and this leads Nat to sign up for TerraMates.

I really enjoyed the relationship between the characters. It's a fast and light read. I've also listened to parts of the audiobook, and I thought it was pretty good.

This was my first introduction to a mail order bride romance---in the stars style. And this was also my first introduction to this author and I am not going to say that this was the most impressive book that I have read all year...however, it was quite enjoyable and I got a fun kick out of it and got me out of reality for the day and I wanted to immerse myself into this read here. What I found most intriguing about this book was the set up. I have only read mail order romances that were set in the wild west in the 1800's. So this was quite different.

Our delightful story begins when our heroine, Ashlyn, is the guardian and care taker for her three younger brothers. When her mother died when she was graduating high school with dreams of becoming a scientist and going to a prestigious university....she had to give up her dreams to take care of her brothers and pay for the mortgage. She has been working as a seamstress, taking night classes slowly working on her degree. But when one of her younger brothers, gets himself in trouble in gambling and a loan shark threatening to come after him and the whole family, Ashlyn knows that she needs to come up with enough credits and there is only one way to do that....agree to be a mail order bride for a alien, live with him for a year but what she gets compensated for will be enough to cover the debt.

Our hero, is having a hard time of it on his own. He has come to some desperation. He is trying to save his world. He has three degrees in the sciences, his world is being overcome slowly by the tides and the water is slowly taking over the land masses. And there is few land properties left, and many refugees and people who are slowly dying. When he learns that someone is rerouting the ships with supplies for the refugees and feeding these supplies to the greedy he abandons his work on the oceans to help those in need and becomes a pirate with a crew he trusts and getting the supplies to those that truly need it. But when his ship crosses into a forbidden shipping lane, to get himself out of prison, he will need to find a wife in a week to get himself out of hot water. Many people are counting on him until they find out who is behind everything. But both Ashlyn and Nathaniel never planned on true love entering into the equation.

This was quite a fun diversion from reality. This is definitely not a five star read, however, it is a delightful read. And I have been wanting to add some more science fiction romance to my reading and boy this book was fun! I really enjoyed the mail order bride trope (I always get a kick out this set up) and I found it was pretty well done. We also have some dream walking that is introduced that I found fascinating. The hero here is quite unique, think merman but without the tail. He and his people are practically born in the water, so they can swim super fast and breathe under water. He is quite like a futuristic alien "Robin Hood" taking from the rich to give to the poor. I found his character quite intriguing especially when he has a nerdy side to him that we only see small parts of.

Our heroine, is strong and capable. She is hard working and loves her brothers. She is still striving to achieve her dreams even if it's a slow process. It appears that she is enabling her brother when he gets foolish, but if she doesn't do what she does, than all of them could be in danger. So I understand, and you see how much she adores her brothers and will do anything for them. But *mini spoiler* this changes her brother, when he sees what she sacrifices for him and he makes some crucial life changes. I loved how intelligent Ashlyn could be, and she goes after what she wants. She takes the initiative at times and I really found these small moments of growth and independence quite endearing.

The romance that develops between Nathaniel and Ashlyn is something I have seen before in the past and really enjoyed. This is an arranged marriage type of set up to their relationship. But there is some great chemistr between them. Nathaniel has to get back on the high seas in a few days, so they try to fit what they feel for each other in just those three days. We see them go on some adventures together, Nathaniel showing Ashlyn his world...dancing together, swimming in his oceans and he teaches her how to sail. There are some tender moments that build. I did feel like they fell into love too quickly and it felt too fabricated to be honest. It didn't feel real enough for the reader, just way too quick. I like insta love, but this one just seemed to be too "on the surface" with not much depth to their relationship. This book is shorter than those I normally read, so that could be a factor.

Another downside to the story was the world building. Now I felt REALLY lost through the first few chapters especially when we are in Nathaniel's POV. This is dual POV, but even in Ashlyn's POV, I felt like there should have been a bit more information placed in the story to help you understand the world. Its more futuristic, but you don't realize that until a few chapters in. I was very confused in some ways, and I am the type of reader that doesn't need much detail to catch on quickly....but I almost put it down because of the confusion. This is the type of story that could have used more information in the beginning to set up the world building more, so that is the one huge factor that I would change to the story.

Overall I found this story to be exciting, set in a futuristic world with aliens, a mail order bride agency, some intrigue and fun times on the high seas and an ending to make you swoon!! A GREAT DELIGHT!

Overall, I liked the premise of the book, but some changes would make this better. For example, a young woman with 3 brothers in their 20s should not be responsible for their actions or feel like she has to put her life on hold to do everything for them. This would have been more realistic had she had one brother in his early 20s and 2 that were still in their early teens (i.e. underage). I'm not saying caring for your family and not wanting them to pay for someone's mistake isn't realistic, I just think it would be more palatable if she wasn't mothering grown men. The other thing is hiding all of her stuff? Why? Then there was her response to Nathaniel telling her he loved her. I get that she wasn't all there, but she got wishy-washy. She kept saying not to fall for him, but she was...then she wasn't sure at all about her feelings.

Again, I liked the concept of aliens needing wives off world and women having the option to fulfill those roles, but with some benefits to them including no threat to them physically. I just think it could have been fleshed out some more.

Pretty good start for a new-to-me author and series.

A little bit of inst-love from Nathaniel.

I also had trouble with believing the "alieness" of this story. There were just so similar for humans in most ways.

Audiobook version

This audiobook had a male and female narrator, which is a great idea. What I didn't understand, however, was the point of having two narrators when they both did male and female parts. I would think, having a male and female narrator, would have made the most sense if the male did all the male characters and the female did all the female characters. But that wasn't the case.

Nathaniel and Ashlyn were a cute couple. And the idea of Terramates an interesting concept for a series. One drawback to the story was the sheer number of times the author repeated herself, relaying details the reader already knew. This issue was also linked to the author's penchant for telling details that would've served the story well through showing. This continued even to the end with Lace doing a year recap, which wasn't at all the most engaging or fulfilling way to end a story.

I received Water World Warrior as a free copy from the author. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. The premise of the story is Nat, who is from a far off planet, Vandwa, has purchased Ash, a mail-order bride from Earth.

*** SPOILERS *** Right off, I had major issues on several points. What kind of loan shark would let a teen (or twenty year old?) boy rack up almost a half-million in debt? After that, why threaten to kill his whole family if it's not paid off and be assured he won't see ANY return on the loan investment? A loan shark able to loan such a huge amount would make smarter investments than a kid with no job. I hate books where one person assumes the responsibility for another person's mistakes-- especially when the person who screwed up is in their late teens or 20's and should be part of the solution. That's not love, that's enabling.

In Chapter Ten, Nat mentioned he could swim better than Ash due to his adaption... that's it, no explanation for how people of Vandwa adapted to water or how they’re physically different than people from earth -- Ash accepted “adaption” as an explanation without asking for clarification. (which is somewhat rectified in Chapter Fifteen, but even then, we hear about breathing apparatus and only a vague explanation that they have a special way of swimming-- as often as Ash saw Nat without a shirt, did she honestly miss the gill slits over his ribs? I found “double kick” swim style a poor explanation for speed, as anyone with the same physiology could probably swim the same way. The reader gets no sense the Vandwans have superior strength or other adaptions such as webbing to help them displace water differently.

Nat's Earth culture slang contained no special words/names to give a reader a sense they were on a different planet, no native animal names (stingrays, and sharks instead of naturally evolving species of their own) and boat building materials used on his planet were no different from Earth- the author made no attempt to create any special items- apart from foods (no color or textures given, just that the food was different)-. The writer treated Vandwa like a water-logged Earth. I'd have liked to know how Nat got wood for his ship if his planet is mostly water (where would it have grown?), and why did his ship look like an Earth pirate ship instead of a design of native origin?

Another issue I had with the story was the author's redundant word usage, a good developmental editor should have caught this and suggested alternate words or phrasing. A disappointing read with too many plot holes, and a complete disregard of world-building—which should have been a main focus with more detail. The story would have read better if Nat was from a different continent in Earth, as it sounded more like Nat sailed the Pacific Ocean rather than a different world.

I really enjoyed WATER WORLD WARRIOR by Lisa Lace and am so glad I took a chance on a new-to-me author. What I love most about science fiction / futuristic romances is that the imagination can run wild. Love is love... but the different environments, character descriptions, societal rules and expectations have a little more liberty and are so much fun to read! Ms Lace offers plenty of details and world building, but not so much as to slow down the pace or dilute the romance in Water World Warrior.

Ashlynn and Nathaniel were both in desperate situations and both turned to TerraMates, a matchmaking service, for a way out. However, to each of their surprise they find unexpected love. Talk about taking online dating to the extreme! But they were very well suited, both with a scientific mind and an adventurous spirit. Nat, for instance, is a bit of a Robin Hood in the guise of a pirate, stealing food meant for the needy from supply ships that are supposed to be delivering it, to make sure those food supplies actually make it to those it is meant for. Ms. Lace tells their story with humor, excitement, a bit of danger, and some very steamy scenes. I listened to the audio version, which utilizes two narrators alternating as the story is being told from both Ashlynn and Nat's point of view. I will definitely be checking out other books in this series! 4 stars

It's Okay

Vague descriptions and no difference in terminology make it inadequate for "Alien Romance" classification. Vandwa has sharks, stingrays, tides, scientists, restaurants, etc. The food is described in an alien way, but they seem to eat the same as we do. They have sail boats, row boats, cargo ships as seen in our past. It made me feel it was more of a time lapse than a sci-fi.

The looks don't seem to differentiate between races, just the hidden gills on their torso. The plot was too simple, no action. There is no real resolution or form of closure, except an "I'm going to taddle on you" and a year later she ends up back at her sewing shop with nothing in between, though it recaps in the next three pages.

It wasn't executed well at all.

It was very simple with another "insta-love" and it kept my interest with a decent plot. I wish I received more than I did.

Where to begin? I'll try to keep this short and simple.
The "sci-fi" factor to this story seemed to be an after thought which was a disappoint in itself.
Not only does Nat cry freakin often, his sensitive ass falls in love with Ash in 3 days flat.
And can someone explain to me why Ash isn't aware of her own physical anatomy? I was so done hearing about her "nub" and "button". I rolled my eyes over and over in this one. Total let down.

The narrators - Oh, the narrators... neither of them hit the mark. Especially Addison. I was wondering if she would do well in any other type of narrating and the only thing I came up with was if she read for a cyborg.

I did thought it was going to be a no on mi list at the beginning but I really enjoyed it after the first chapters, the plot was interesting and intriguing, loved the characters they were so complex I really liked them, Ashlyn was funny and Nathaniel was so air headed sometimes it was cute.

the voices took me a while to accustom to but it was super enjoyable after a few chapters. Hope to hear more audio books of this series I just love it, I count myself as a huge fan of Lisa at this point

I’m on a bit of a arranged marriage/MOC kick and decided to spice it up with other-worlders. I couldn’t find my groove. There’s very little world building. I knew it was sci-fi, but the book starts with a pirate named Nathaniel taking over a boat for supplies when his captive escapes.

Is that what you're doing with your Ph.D.? Being a fucking pirate?

Then, we switch to Ashlyn (who I think is from Earth) with her adult (23yr old) brother telling her he’s in trouble. He’s 23 but is sniffing, wailing, and talking like a little kid. He’s in debt and they need a large sum of money, or the baddie will kill the entire family. Thankfully, she can be a TerraMates for almost the exact amount they owe.

Then, we’re back with Nathaniel who’s delivering supplies to a refugee camp. When he’s arrested….

So basically, a “Robin Hood” pirate who has a Ph.D. gets apprehended because a crazy scientist escaped and turned him in for stealing supplies. He gets out of this by claiming he was innocently in the area because he was taking a shortcut to pick up his fiancée.

Then, we’re back with Ashlyn on her way to meet her fiancée when a fortune teller stops her to tell her about her soulmate.

I’m so confused!! We have no insight in the world or what a Terra Mate even is. Other than mentions like… a water planet, galaxy and spaceport…I’d not even know it was sci-fi. I kept thinking I must have missed a book, but this is book 1. It sounds like Nate is a famous scientist that was tasked with saving their world but became a pirate to save the refugees. The couple doesn’t meet until 26% and I’m out.

"My name is Nathaniel Gregory Lachlan. I have a Ph.D. in environmental science from the University of Mizu O'Nomeemass. I am well known on my planet and across the galaxy for my work on our planet's problem of rising sea levels.

This was a great start of the Terramates series! I really enjoyed both Ashlyn and Nathaniel. Although it seemed a bit rushed at some points, I really liked this first book and will continue on with the series.

In order for Ash to protect her brothers she signs up for Terramates to match her with a husband. For Nat to stay out of jail he has to prove that he was sailing in a restricted zone in order to get to his wife quicker.

Although they start out as strangers they quickly fall in love and hrlp each other out. I don't think there was a single thing about Nat and Ash that i didn't like.

I really enjoyed this new to me series and author and i look forward to reading more of both!

I have never read a book by Lisa Lace before and probably would not have if it weren’t for it being suggested on Facebook. I can happily say I am excited that I did.

The whole concept behind this book is amazing. We always think of aliens as different looking than us instead looking like us with a few different qualities.

Nathaniel and Ashlyn are so perfect for each other. They are both stubborn but very passionate about helping out those they love or care about. I loved how they both were skeptical about TerraMates and could never fathom needing a service like that until they did. And it worked out beautifully. There love is fast developing in just a matter of days learning just how wrong they were about the TerraMate service. This book was amazing and i absolutely loved it.

I was going to give this a 4 until I reached the final chapter. It sorta ruined the book for me. It contradicted itself. One moment the heroine is back on Earth and missing her husband and then the next she's supposedly with him every day. The whole chapter flipped back and forth between past and present tense. It was just so weird. I kept on rewinding trying to make sense of it. I kinda know what the author was trying to get across to her readers but the whole chapter needs to be rewritten so there's better continuity to it.

The narration on this book left me feeling like I didn't listen to the whole book. Moments when the narrator's should have shown excitement or any type of emotion just left me wanting and waiting for more to happen. I feel the story could have been really great, but although it took until chapter 16 for any of the good stuff to happen, the build up wasn't exciting and once the sexiness began it all seemed rushed. I was able to finish the book, but I was once again left wondering if I even heard the entire story or just a piece of it. I may try listening to the next story to see if it gets any better, but for right now I'm left with a poor taste.

I picked this book up from a fellow blogger who wrote a review so good, I had to read it myself. You can see her review here: Book Wormie Spot.

This book was decent, will I read anymore in the series? No. Its not that the story was written bad or that it was inconsistent. I have just read so many books like this one that I don’t want to waste my time reading the same story again.

It was a bit of insta-love. And those are fine when I’m in the mood for them, which I was when I read this one. But in general I tend to read more feeling-depth books. I loved the alien aspect but the female MC was a bit naive for my tastes. Other than that the steamy scenes were blush inducing, which is what I was expecting in a book like this one.

If you like a good sexy times book, this could be for you.

Quick thinking about how to save the ones you love because of a mistake. That if you don't find a solution, you will pay.
A small solution is about to drop into his lap. Yet her never expected to find out some details that leave him in an undesirable position. A complication arises, his only solution is to find the right direction for all.
A futuristic robin hood with a heart of gold, a conscious and finding out sometimes destiny lands in your life unexpectedly.
Great read. Really enjoyed and didn't want to put it down. As the story unfolded, things got complicated with assumptions. Sometimes things are not always as they appear. Wish there was more to read, would like to have read more on these characters.

You would do anything for your family. Ashlyn can only see one way of helping her brother pay his gambling debts and that is to marry. She has never met her husband to be but she has read up on him. Nathaniel needs a bride or else he will go to prison before finishing his mission. He is many things other than a scientist, he is also a pirate that will do all most anything to help others.
He finds that Ashlyn will fit in with him and after a year they will both we free and be able to move on.
But things turn out so many differently, they both find that they like each other and that is will be really hard if that had to leave each other.
A great read. I received a copy for Lisa for my honest thoughts.

This was set in such a beautiful world. Covered in water but slowly drowning in rising waters, refugees are starving and one wiley scientist becomes a pirate. To escape capture he fabricated a fiancé, a woman he soon finds on a dating site. This woman? She's fallen on tough times but is determined that she wouldn't stoop to selling herself - life had other plans.

I wish TerraMates were real! I'd love to find a special someone, make money, and visit alien worlds with honorable, possessive, passionate, and hunky men. To go on adventures and explore a people completely foreign to my own. While this probably wouldn't happen in my lifetime I can dream.

First person 2 POV

The hero is an alien, but his differences are small and are related more to culture. The science fiction is sparse but enough is there to make it different from Earth. The fortune teller stuff seemed more paranormal to me. There are a couple typos.

I liked the slow build of the intimate part of the marriage. The dialogue was natural and engaging. It was refreshing to read a story where the characters love each other before sex. Happy ending!

Save Me From Environmentalists

I had to stop reading fairly early in. The storytelling is incoherent and ignorant of any scientific knowledge the author attempted to build a plot around. My advice to Ms Lace Iscariot what you know about. If you insist on this type of completely researched drivel you will never make it. And a course in English grammar might not hurt either.

I liked the idea of TerraMates. Can't believe Ashlyn 'babied' her brothers so much! They were in their 20's and only a few years younger than her. Anyway she lucked out with getting Nat for a husband. Smart, sexy and a stealing-for-the-poor pirate! Light & breezy read.

Didn't like this story, there were only a few references and clues that they were actually on a different planet. But to me the story just seemed like a woman being married to a scientist that is also a pirate.
