And this is where it all starts to go downhill as Bec loses himself. At least that is the impression after reading this issue. Sudden time leap into the future, then flashbacks to the past events. It could've been dealt better, as some other things. But I guess that's how Bec works. Starts good and then he drowns himself in his own ambition trying to extend the lifespan of his series.

I got this comic via a Humble Bundle and as I am a bit lazy when it comes to writing reviews this year, I am going to write one review for the entire series.

These comics remind me - the story, the storytelling and the artwork (the characters move a bit stiffly) - of the adventure comics I read during the seventies and eighties (Bob Morane for example). They also have a European feel: the locations, the artwork, no superheroes, and occasionally a bit of nudity.

They feel a bit dated, but as adventure comics go, I enjoyed them. The stories revolve around the Centenarian of the Carpathians and his aides, mainly London Donovan, who search/hunt the world for weird and often very dangerous creatures.

“Спадкоємиця Карпат” - це таймскіп в серії “Карфаген”, де про саму компанію “Carthago” майже не згадується, напади мегафауни стали буденністю, зміни клімату вже грюкають у двері, а головною героїнею стає дівчинка-іхтіандр. Довга експозиція через флешбеки пояснює, як усе майже розвалилося, єдиним потенційним лиходієм залишився брат багатія, сам багатій впав в депресію через нордичний секс з дочкою нациста зразка Другої Світової і помер. А помер - то треба комусь оддать його лахи. Заходь, дівча із зябрами! Розширення лору тут тільки зі сторони Атлантиди, на мегалодонів дали подивитись лиша в першій половині цього тому, конфлікти між персонажами наче є, але якось не відчуваються. Шо там далі, русалок будуть ловити чи шукати способи оживити багатого діда?

А давайте ще й поекспериментуємо - я прогнав свій огляд через ШІ, бо чому б ні, з промптом додати літер та іронії, і от що вийшло:

«Спадкоємиця Карпат»: Коли лор тріщить по швах, а мегалодони пішли у відпустку

«Спадкоємиця Карпат» — це не просто черговий том, це радикальний таймскіп у всесвіті «Карфагена», який вибиває ґрунт з-під ніг. Про колишню могутність корпорації Carthago тут згадують хіба що пошепки: світ змінився. Напади мегафауни перетворилися на нудну рутину, а кліматичний колапс уже не просто натякає про себе — він вибиває двері носаком.
Сюжетний вінегрет та депресивні мільйонери

Замість чіткого поступу вперед, автор занурює нас у нескінченні флешбеки. Ця розлога експозиція намагається пояснити, як людство примудрилося все розвалити, але фокус постійно зміщується на дивні особисті драми:

Головний багатій: Замість того, щоб рятувати імперію, пішов на дно власної депресії. Причина? Наслідки специфічного «нордичного зв'язку» з донькою нациста часів Другої світової. Зрештою, він просто вирішує померти, залишаючи по собі купу питань і вакантне місце лідера.

Нова героїня: Оскільки майно покійного треба кудись діти, на сцену виходить дівчинка-іхтіандр. «Заходь, рибко, тепер це все твоє!» — приблизно так виглядає передача спадку.

Антагоніст: Єдиний, хто ще намагається «лиходіяти» на цьому святі життя — брат того самого депресивного багатія. Але чи вистачить йому харизми витягнути весь сюжет?

Що з лором та екшном?

Якщо ви чекали на епічні битви з монстрами глибин, то приготуйтеся до розчарування.

Де мегалодони? Величезні акули, які були фішкою серії, з’являються лише у першій половині тому. Далі вони, схоже, просто пливуть у справах, лишаючи нас наодинці з політикою.

Вектор Атлантиди: Розширення всесвіту тепер йде виключно в бік міфічної Атлантиди. Більше зябер, менше логіки.

Конфлікти-привиди: Між персонажами постійно іскрить, вони сперечаються і ворогують, але глядачу (чи читачу) на це байдуже. Емоційної ваги в цих розбірках — як у пінопласту.

Підсумок: Ми маємо дивну суміш постапокаліпсису, генетичних мутацій та сімейних драм у стилі «Багаті теж плачуть, особливо якщо вони зв’язалися з нацистами».

Що чекає на нас у наступних частинах? Чи почнеться масштабне полювання на русалок у затоплених містах, чи автори вигадають черговий "рояль у кущах", щоб воскресити мертвого діда-мільйонера через атлантійські технології?

The series now jumps forward in time (over a decade although the storyline does still forward and back making keeping tabs on dates a fun challenge) - much has changed but some of the old mysteries remain.

This is the second half of the series - ironically referred to as origins - where I suspect some of the mysteries and motivations will be revealed. There are multiple characters who stories need to be resolved and few mysteries explained along the way - I will admit that the shift form one book to the next was a little jarring and I am not too sure about how some of the characters have developed - Lou being one of them.

I am sure all will be revealed - but like all good comic books all in good time

Jumping ahead over a decade, things really kick up into high gear as a lot of things are explained and more mysteries are brought up.

This series definitely keeps your interest peaked. Especially fascinating is seeing the family broken up - wasn't expecting it to go quite in that direction but the logic behind it is solid and explains one thing that annoyed me about the first arc regarding one decision. So kudos for that stupid decision actually having ramifications, which is rare to see.

Jump ten years in future, after a couple random flashbacks to 19th century. Apparently the girl with gills has been on ships & Romania in the last decade but not using her fantastic skills to, I don’t know, tell all the giant sharks to stop eating people? What’s the point? Did the author forget he gave her gills & telepathy with sea creatures? Six volumes & she’s yet to do anything with them... WTF.

Indecipherable relationship between Lou & Tommy; Lou is the sole heir to Mr. F’s creepy castle & fabulous wealth; Lou & Kim on the outs for some vague reason; oh, and what about those gill slits?? Nobody seems to be curious, including the author.

(for vol. #6-#10, forming the second and last story arc) We now move from the Megalodon mockumentary into the Mermaids mockumentary combined with Ancient Aliens and a lot of nonsense regarding the motives of the characters and the story itself.
