A Darth Vader grotesque on a church, a giant chair, the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere, a faithful replica of the Holy Land for those who can't make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, ingenious fencing forged from War of 1812 musket barrels, a yet uncracked cryptographic sculpture, the world's oldest continuously operating airport, the only state embassy in the nation...
Far from the crowds and the usual clichés, Washington, DC is a reserve of well-concealed treasures only revealed to
those who know how to wander off the beaten track, whether residents or visitors.
An indispensable guide for those who thought they knew the city well, or who would like to discover its hidden face.
What a fascinating little book! I'm not planning a trip any time soon but I saw this at the library and decided to read through it. I learned some pretty interesting things, and now I want to go to Washington!
This is quite a nice little guidebook to some of the hidden gems in Washington DC. Visitors who want to get off the beaten path around the Mall should find it fascinating. It has some wonderful spots. The one problem I found was that I wished they had grouped the spots by areas. E.g. there are several spots around the Navy Yard that would be easy to do together. Definitely worth getting if you are planning a visit to DC
Interesting collection of little known oddities and sights in the greater DC area. Variable interest level, but I found some great nuggets for an upcoming trip. Lots of particulars within larger museums.
