Το βιβλίο αναφέρεται στη Γερμανία το 1937 στην οποία η Clara δουλεύει ως ηθοποιός και συναναστρέφεται με την ελίτ του ανερχόμενου τότε Τρίτου Ράιχ. Η Clara είναι Βρετανίδα με γερμανικές ρίζες και κρύβει ένα μικρό αλλά θανάσιμο μυστικό το οποίο πασχίζει να διαφυλάξει. Η δολοφονία όμως μιας νεαρής κοπέλας που γνώρισε κάνει τη ζωή της ακόμη πιο περίπλοκη από ότι ήδη είναι.

Παρόλο που δεν έχω διαβάσει το πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς, δεν νομίζω ότι δυσκολεύτηκα κάπου και να αναφέρω ότι η συγραφέας έχει κάνει πολύ καλή έρευνα ώστε να μπορέσει ναυποστηρίξει το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο της ιστορίας της.

Αν σας αρέσουν τα ιστορικά μυθιστορήματα  με στοιχεία δολοπλοκίας και κατασκοπείας, τότε δώστε του μια ευκαιρία.

Η εποχή που καταπιάνεται το βιβλίο αλλά και όλη η σειρά με ηρωίδα την Κλάρα Βάιν, είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα από μόνη της. Τα χρόνια πριν το ξέσπασμα του δευτέρου παγκοσμίου πολέμου είναι αρκετά ταραγμένα. Οι φασίστες κυριαρχούν σε αρκετά σημεία της Ευρώπης και προσπαθούν να πάρουν κι άλλους με το μέρος τους. Ο Χίτλερ στη Γερμανία, ο Μουσολίνι στην Ιταλία, ο Φράνκο στην Ισπανία. Είναι όλοι τους καλά δικτυωμένοι, συνεργάζονται και δοκιμάζουν τις δυνάμεις τους όσο μπορούν. Η εξέλιξη της τεχνολογίας που έχουν να επιδείξουν είναι δραματική και το άσχημο της υπόθεσης είναι ότι αυτό που τους παρακινεί είναι ένας κακός και δυσάρεστος σκοπός.

Η ατμόσφαιρα της εποχής είναι κυρίαρχη σε όλο το βιβλίο. Με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο ο αναγνώστης γνωρίζει πως κινούνται οι ναζί, οι υπόλοιποι Γερμανοί αλλά και οι ξένοι που βρίσκονται στο Βερολίνο αυτά τα ταραγμένα χρόνια. Οι ισορροπίες είναι επισφαλείς. Ποιος θα είναι πιο αρεστός στο φύρερ; Ποιος θα έχει μεγαλύτερη εξουσία και επιρροή μετά από εκείνον; Όμως τι σημαίνει αυτό για τους κατοίκους της χώρας και τους υπόλοιπους στρατιωτικούς; Πόσοι άνθρωποι έχουν αρχίσει ήδη να εξαφανίζονται; Πόση είναι η δύναμη που έχει ήδη η Γκεστάπο; Που μπορούν να φτάσουν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι;

Τα αποτελέσματα και το μακρύ χέρι της Γκεστάπο έχουν γίνει δυστυχώς ήδη γνωστά σε όλη την Ευρώπη σχεδόν και ιδιαίτερα στους λαούς που κατακτήθηκαν από τους ναζί. Υπήρχαν πολλοί που δεν πίστευαν ότι βρισκόταν προ των πυλών ενός άγριου και απάνθρωπου πολέμου, που εθελοτυφλούσαν, που δεν ήθελαν να πιστέψουν πως υπήρχε ποτέ περίπτωση οι ναζί να θέλουν να κατακτήσουν ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Κι αυτό το πληρώσαμε ακριβά.

This is the second novel featuring actress/spy Clara Vine, who first appeared in “Black Roses.” The first novel was set in 1933, but it is now 1937 and Clara, daughter of British politician and Nazi sympathiser, Sir Ronald Vine, whose mother was German and whose grandmother was Jewish, has now made a life for herself in Berlin. Clara’s Jewish ancestry is almost a great a secret as her work for British Intelligence and both must be guarded closely, for Berlin has changed for the worse since our heroine first arrived and Clara walks a delicate tightrope. She not only passes information about the Nazi elite to Archie Dyson, attaché at the British Embassy, but she also informs Joseph Goebbels of gossip which might be useful to him.

The book begins with the murder of Anna Hansen, who Clara knew previously as a dancer and an artist’s model, but who was about to marry an SS officer and was attending one of the government’s Reich Bride Schools. When Clara’s friend, journalist Mary Harker, returns from covering the Spanish Civil War, she is interested in the crime. At first, it seems the regime is covering it up as an embarrassment, but then the Gestapo become involved. What did Anna know, or do, that got her killed and why is Clara suddenly under suspicion?

This is an exciting and, I found, a much more enjoyable read than the first book – with Clara a much more rounded character. Again, the author has used so many real life people in this novel; not only the intensely creepy Goebbels and his wife, Magda, but all of the Nazi elite (there is a fascinating trip to Goering’s vast hunting lodge, Carinall), a brief cameo appearance by Charles Lindbergh, as well as visiting British dignitaries, the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson, on a honeymoon to Nazi Germany, and two of the Mitford sisters – Unity (wonderfully eccentric and deranged) and the cool and capable Diana. There are also two more men in Clara’s life; Englishman Ralph Sommers and Oberst Arno Strauss, friend of her new co-star the WWI flying hero, Ernst Udet. It is clear that war is expected and that Germany are preparing for a totally different kind of conflict than any seen before. The bombing of civilians in Spain suggests that air attacks will be used and the British want to find out what Germany has planned.

I really think that Jane Thynne has the makings of a wonderful series here. This, second book, is much more assured and interesting than the first – fast paced and well plotted, with good characters and fascinating historical cameo appearances. It is certainly a series I will follow and, hopefully, Clara will have many more adventures. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.

I requested this book from NetGalley thinking it might be rather like a Susan Elia MacNeal book. Unfortunately, it was rather more of a trudge (a combination of clunky writing and bad editing as well as a plot moppet whose charms I couldn't quite see). It may have helped to have read the first book (I did not). There was some recapping but I felt like there was some character exposition that I missed. I did like the character portraits (especially that of Magda Goebells, pointing out the drawbacks of the Nazi system) and the historical aspects, but parts of the plot stretched the suspension of disbelief rather to the stretching point.
Clara Vine is a famous actress who is trying desperately to hide the fact that she hates the current regime, especially since her father is a Nazi sympathizer. He is also English (she is only half German) which is why Clara is invited to the Goebells house to help entertain the Mitford sisters. See, originally they were supposed to tour a nearby bride school but a girl has been murdered and the school has been put on lock down. Then another girl is murdered and Clara is hot on the trail, all while starring in films, being part of the Nazi publicity machine, and being a spy for England.

Με τα «Άνθη του χειμώνα», το δεύτερο μυθιστόρημά της με ηρωίδα την Κλάρα Βάιν, μας προσκαλεί σε ένα ακόμα ταξίδι στο παρελθόν, λίγο πριν το ξέσπασμα του Πολέμου.

Είμαστε στο 1937. Η προπολεμική Γερμανία ζει τους ρυθμούς του ναζιστικού πυρετού, που προϊδεάζει για τα όσα φριχτά θα ακολουθήσουν τα επόμενα χρόνια. Όπως σε όλες τις μεγάλες πόλεις, έτσι και στο Βερολίνο επικρατεί μια ατμόσφαιρα βαριά, όσο και αν οι Ναζί επιχειρούν να διατηρήσουν τα προσχήματα: ο διωγμός των Εβραίων έχει ξεκινήσει, η λογοκρισία και η αυθαιρεσία κυριαρχούν, η καχυποψία κι ο φόβος επισκιάζουν κάθε κοινωνική επαφή.
Στη Σχολή για Υποψήφιες Νύφες των Ες Ες μια νεαρή γυναίκα δολοφονείται. Το γεγονός θεωρείται ατύχημα και αποσιωπάται από τη διεύθυνση της Σχολής. Η πλοκή είναι καλοδουλεμένη, πιστή στο ιστορικό της πλαίσιο και αρκούντως ατμοσφαιρική. Η συγγραφέας μας μεταφέρει στο Βερολίνο της εποχής εκείνης, όπου επιφανειακά η λαμπρότητα του ναζιστικού κινήματος επισκίαζε όλα τα προηγούμενα καθεστώτα, όμως από κάτω κρύβονταν ο φόβος, η τρομοκρατία κι η παραδειγματική τιμωρία για την οποιαδήποτε πράξη απέκλινε από τη θεωρία των Ναζί για το σωστό και το πρέπον. Μια περίοδο ταραγμένη, γεμάτη αβεβαιότητα για το αύριο, με όλα τα σημάδια να δείχνουν πως τα χειρότερα δεν έχουν έρθει ακόμη.
Μέσα σε μια τέτοια ταραγμένη εποχή, η περσόνα της Κλάρα Βάιν αποκτά πιο ιδιαίτερη σημασία. Μιλάμε για μια γυναίκα που απεχθάνεται τους Ναζί, παρόλο που είναι κατά το ήμισυ Γερμανίδα, αλλά είναι αναγκασμένη να υποκρίνεται, να κινείται στους ίδιους κύκλους με εκείνους και να φροντίζει όχι μόνο να ειδοποιεί τη Βρετανία για τις κινήσεις τους, αλλά και να προστατεύει επαρκώς τον εαυτό της και τα μυστικά της. Ξέρει ποια μοίρα περιμένει τους προδότες του καθεστώτος και είναι το τελευταίο πράγμα που θέλει για τον εαυτό της. Στον χώρο που κινείται γνωρίζει καθημερινά πολλές σημαντικές προσωπικότητες της εποχής – άλλοι από αυτούς είναι φανατικοί υπέρμαχοι του Χίτλερ, ενώ άλλοι διαφωνούν, διακριτικά ή κάπως πιο φανερά, με την τακτική του.
Τα ψυχογραφήματα των ηρώων είναι άκρως ενδιαφέροντα. Τόσο οι βασικοί ήρωες της πλοκής, όσο κι εκείνοι που έχουν έναν μικρότερο ρόλο, έχουν τη δική τους προσωπική ιστορία να αφηγηθούν, τον δικό τους ξεχωριστό ρόλο να διαδραματίσουν στα τεκταινόμενα. Είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον για τον αναγνώστη να ανακαλύψει, καθώς η αφήγηση προχωρά, το πώς η συγγραφέας έχει αποδώσει τον καθένα τους, έτσι ώστε να παραμένει πιστός στην περσόνα του. Ας μην ξεχνάμε πως, ορισμένοι από αυτούς, ήταν υπαρκτά πρόσωπα. Ακόμα και άτομα που εμφανίζονται ως φανατικοί οπαδοί του Χίτλερ –γιατί αυτό ήταν– δικαιολογούν την ιδεολογία τους με λόγια και πράξεις, γιατί πίστευαν πως ήταν το σωστό. Η συγγραφέας δεν κρίνει κανέναν από τους ήρωές της· παραθέτει τα πιστεύω, τις ιδέες και τις πράξεις τους, αφήνοντας την τελική κρίση στον αναγνώστη και την Ιστορία.
Τα «Άνθη του χειμώνα» είναι ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα νουάρ, μια συναρπαστική ιστορία με φόντο μία από τις πιο σκοτεινές περιόδους του 20ου αιώνα και, χάρη στην ταλαντούχα πένα της Thynne, καταφέρνει να καθηλώσει με την ξεχωριστή του αίγλη ακόμα και τον απαιτητικότερο αναγνώστη του είδους, κι όχι μόνο.

Third time lucky? Nope.

I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself – I’ve already established that I don’t particularly enjoy this series, and yet I am always enticed by their stunning covers and interesting synopses. I picked this one up purely to satisfy my own curiosity but I’m sad to say was disappointed again.

What is perhaps the most gutting aspect is that Jane Thynne is clearly intelligent. Her prose, at times too on-the-nose, exhibits an excellent attention to detail. But my god is it research-heavy, almost to the point of being unreadable. (I skim-read this one from about a third of the way in, only really tuning back in for the more interesting aspects.)

Clara herself is an infuriating creature who never gathers a personality or goals of her own beyond defining herself (and other women) against men. There’s a huge amount of internalised misogyny in her outlook, demeaning other women in their ‘battle of the bulge’ (real quotation) and using weight as a characterisation for many of the antagonists, such as Unity Mitford, described happily ‘demolishing a large piece of chocolate cake’ before leaving to worship Hitler. Clara lacks agency – which is a fundamental paradox for an agent - so her plight is never emotionally compelling. She is also a bloody awful agent at that. She is always attracting attention (oh dear, says Thynne, the agonies of being ‘attractive’), at least two men in each book confront her with accusations of espionage (but she’s sexy, hey, so they let her off) and she contributes a grand total of nothing to the Secret Intelligence Service. Urgh, die already.

The conversations are beyond conceivable and laden with historical exposition. But then, perhaps the historical exposition is the only interesting thing about these novels. After reading the train wreck of Black Roses (what was that?) and the slight improvement on Faith and Beauty, it’s clear that these novels follow a rigid formula, starting with a woman murdered. I tried this one on account of the cover the scene set in Munich (one of my favourite cities) but was underwhelmed.

Okay, I’ve given this series three chances – it should in theory be something I’d love – but have not been rewarded for my efforts. It doesn't help that each is supposed to be feasibly read as a stand-alone so I'm constantly having to digest uninspiring recaps of dull events in Clara's sex life. Bye, Clara, it’s not me, it’s you.

Complex mystery in dangerous times.

A gripping and edgy story of intelligence gathering right under the noses of elite of the Third Reich. Born in Britain, half-German actress and movie star Clara Vine, is a British contact in the dangerous days of pre war Berlin of 1937, gathering relevant information on the movements and interests of the major German players. The names mentioned, the circles Clara has access to are the who's who of the upper echelons in the Nazi party.
Two incidences appear to cross each other, the murder of a young woman at one of Hitler's Bride Schools where young women train to be wives of SS personnel, and the gathering of information about the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe developments in aeronautics, in particular cameras being used on planes.
Clara realizes she knows the murdered woman from the past, Anna Hansen. Her death is hushed up. Clara's friend Mary, an American journalist, has just returned from the war in Spain and been allowed to re-enter Germany, despite being previously expelled. Clara turns Mary's attention towards the murdered woman.
Clara is about to star in a movie alongside a famous German pilot. This opens up possibilities for Clara to gather further information. Her handler at the British Embassy has warned her to lie low. Her name has been mentioned in Gestapo circles.
Two men claim Clara's attention, the mysterious Ralph Sommers and Arno Strauss, a top German test pilot.
Aa a movie star Clara attends events and parties, alongside British supporters of fascism and Hitler in particular. Making their appearance are Diana and Unity Mitford, Edward, now the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson.
These days, as the British parliament and people were undecided about Hitler, as Lord Halifax continued to court Germany, were dangerous times for Britain. The sense of all of this, the power of the Gestapo, the winning over of children in the Hitler Youth Movement, the treatment of the Jewish population, the rise of power of fascism and extremism , the excesses of Hitler's elite senior personnel such as the Goebbels are seamlessly woven into the story; stark reminders of the horrors that would intensify as the thirties come to a close.
An excellent read. Thynne's research is to be commended.

Thank you Goodreads for the advance copy! This is the first Jane Thynne novel I've read, so I hadn't read the first book in this series, but I don't think I missed anything essential. I've had the Clara Vine series on my To-Read list for quite sometime because I love a good WWII spy novel, so I was excited to give this a try. As many other reviewers point out, this novel is full of interesting information about bride schools, Goering, Goebbels, and other key figures in Nazi Germany, but it was a bit of a slow mover. The author is a great writer and does a wonderful job of setting a scene. You feel like you are there in Berlin. But the details took away much of the suspense for me. I'm a quick reader, and typically finish a book within a matter of days. It took me nearly a month to finish this one, because the plot moved so slowly. If you enjoy a well-written WWII novel, full of facts and details, and interesting characters, you'll enjoy the book. If you are looking for a fast paced spy novel, you may be a bit disappointed.

Δεύτερο βιβλίο με την Κλάρα Βαιν, η οποία συνεχίζει να είναι ηθοποιός στην Γερμανία στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1930 και ταυτόχρονα κατάσκοπος των Άγγλων.
Η καριέρα της εχει εξελιχθεί, είναι πια σχετικά διάσημη αφού έχει την υποστήριξη κορυφαίων Ναζί, ενώ η προσωπική της ζωή είναι ελαφρώς βαλτωμένη.
Ως ιστορική αναδρομή στα χρόνια λίγο πριν την έναρξη του δευτέρου παγκοσμίου πολέμου το βιβλίο είναι καλό. Δεν έχει τη μαγεία του πρώτου βιβλίου, όμως συνεχίζει να μας διηγείται τις αλλαγές και τον τρόπο ζωής στη Γερμανία της εποχής, η οποία στην ουσία προετοιμάζεται για πόλεμο κυριαρχίας. Αυτή τη φορά μαθαίνουμε για τη Λουφτβάφε, αφού η Κλάρα γνωρίζει κάποιους από τους κορυφαίους αεροπόρους της Γερμανίας, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αρχίζει να συνειδητοποιεί ότι υπάρχει στ' αλήθεια το ενδεχόμενο ενός πολέμου. Παρουσιάζονται και κάποια στοιχεία για την Αγγλία της εποχής, ενώ ρόλο στο βιβλίο αποκτούν και άλλοι Άγγλοι.
Η αλήθεια είναι ότι δυστυχώς δεν μου άρεσε. Το βρήκα αργό, η πλοκή σερνόταν, πολλοί διάλογοι και λίγη δράση. Επίσης μου φάνηκε αδιανόητο το πώς Γερμανός πιλότος στην ουσία έδωσε κρατικά μυστικά στην Κλάρα χωρίς κανέναν ενδοιασμό και χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη, ειδικά στα χρόνια που περιγράφονται στο βιβλίο, όπου όλοι φοβόταν ακόμη και τη σκιά τους. Με ποια λογική την πήρε μαζί του και γιατί της είπε όσα της είπε- δεν θα το καταλάβω, το θεωρώ μεγάλο λάθος πλοκής που δεν με πείθει.
Ακόμη ένα πρόβλημα που έχω με το βιβλίο: για κάποιο λόγο όταν διάβασα το οπισθόφυλλο κατάλαβα ότι η Κλάρα θα έμπαινε μέσα στη σχολή για νύφες, ότι θα εκπαιδευόταν εκεί. Μάλλον φταίει το ότι είχα διαβάσει το οπισθόφυλλο της Αγγλ��κής έκδοσης όπου και υπονοείται κάτι τέτοιο και αποφάσισα να το διαβάσω όταν μεταφραστεί, οπότε και αμέλησα να διαβάσω το οπισθόφυλλο της ελληνικής έκδοσης που είναι πιο ξεκάθαρο. Δε φταίει βέβαια το βιβλίο σε αυτό, αλλά και πάλι το αποτέλεσμα είναι ότι εγώ μέχρι λίγο πριν το τέλος περίμενα να μπει στη σχολή ως υποψήφια νύφη.
Τέλος πάντων, αν σας αρέσει η Ευρωπαϊκή ιστορία διαβάστε το, έχει ωραία στοιχεία μέσα. Αν θέλετε ένα κοινωνικό ή ένα βιβλίο κατασκοπείας καλύτερα διαλέξετε κάτι άλλο.

I was a bit disappointed with this after enjoying Black Roses. The plot seemed thin, and Clara’s escapes from suspicion beggared belief on several occasions. She made some really silly mistakes which should have seen her in the clutches of the Gestapo. Hope Jane T regains her storytelling ability by the next one in the series.

Βερολίνο 1937. Στη Σχολή για Υποψήφιες Νύφες μια γυναίκα δολοφονείται και στην υπόθεση αναμιγνύεται η Γκεστάπο. Το θύμα είναι προσωπική φίλη της Κλάρα Βάιν, η οποία βλέπει το παρελθόν από τα πρώτα της βήματα στη Γερμανία να επιστρέφει. Πώς θα συνδεθεί με την υπόθεση; Τι σχέση έχουν όλα αυτά με την ανερχόμενη δύναμη της γερμανικής αεροπορίας, τα πρώτα βήματα της αεροφωτογραφίας, την καταστροφή της Γκερνίκα και τον καινούργιο έρωτα στη ζωή της Κλάρα Βάιν;

Αφήνοντας στην άκρη τη γυναίκα και τον ρόλο της σε μια διαρκώς μεταβαλλόμενη κοινωνία, χωρίς όμως και να την παραμελεί, η Jane Thynne μάς χαρίζει ένα δυνατό, ανθρώπινο, σκληρό κατασκοπικό μυθιστόρημα με απανωτές ανατροπές, ρεαλιστικούς χαρακτήρες και έξυπνη μίξη πραγματικών προσώπων με πλασματικούς ήρωες. Είμαστε έναν χρόνο πιο κοντά στον πόλεμο, με τον ναζισμό να ανεβαίνει κατακόρυφα, την προπαγάνδα να κάνει πολύ καλή δουλειά και τον εξοπλισμό της Γερμανίας σε μαχητικά αεροπλάνα να εμπλουτίζεται αδιάκοπα. Η επίσκεψη του Δούκα του Ουίνδσορ, η καταστροφή της Γκερνίκα, τα θεμέλια πάνω στα οποία θα χτιστεί το όραμά του ο Χίτλερ είναι μερικά μόνο από τα κομμάτια του καλοδουλεμένου ιστορικού φόντου στο οποίο διαδραματίζεται το μυθιστόρημα. Ο τίτλος του βιβλίου προέρχεται εκ της αγγλικής μετάφρασης του βιβλίου «The winter garden», που κι αυτό είναι βασισμένο στο γνωστό καμπαρέ του Βερολίνου Wintergarten, όπου εργαζόταν η Άννα ως χορεύτρια. Η Άννα Χάνσεν λοιπόν ήταν μαθήτρια της Σχολής για Υποψήφιες Νύφες του Ράιχ στο Σβανενβέρντερ, όπου πάνε όσες πρόκειται να παντρευτούν αξιωματικούς των Ες Ες. Σύμφωνα με τον Αδόλφο Χίτλερ: «…οι γυναίκες που επρόκειτο να παντρευτούν την αφρόκρεμα των Γερμανών έπρεπε να είναι ξεχωριστές». Τα μαθήματα έγιναν υποχρεωτικά από το 1935 και το πιστοποιητικό υποβαλλόταν στην Υπηρεσία Φυλής και Εγκατάστασης των Ες Ες για να προχωρήσει ο γάμος. Παρά το όνομά της, πιο πολύ σα στρατιωτική ακαδημία έμοιαζε, με εξουθενωτικό πρόγραμμα. Το Προεδρείο Γυναικών, με επικεφαλής την Γκέρτρουντ Σολτς-Κλιν έχει αποστολή να προωθεί την ιδέα της ανωτερότητας του άντρα και να πείθει τις γυναίκες να δουλεύουν για το καλό του ναζιστικού καθεστώτος αλλά όλα αυτά αμαυρώνονται με το πτώμα της κοπέλας στον κήπο της Σχολής.

Η συγγραφέας μελέτησε καλά και σωστά την εποχή, την πόλη και τον τρόπο σκέψης των κατοίκων μιας χώρας που ετοιμάζεται να παίξει πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο και πάλι στην ευρωπαϊκή κονίστρα. Υπάρχουν πάρα πολλές λεπτομέρειες από την καθημερινότητα ενός Βερολινέζου ειδικότερα και Γερμανού γενικότερα: τίτλοι εφημερίδων, προϊόντα ομορφιάς, κινηματογραφικές ταινίες, ξενοδοχεία, καμπαρέ και ζαχαροπλαστεία, μνημεία και τοπόσημα, οδοί και δημόσια κτήρια. Είναι όλα όμως τόσο αρμονικά εντεταγμένα στη ροή της πλοκής και περιγράφονται τόσο όμορφα και στρωτά, χωρίς υπερβολές και μακρηγορίες, που δε με κούρασαν ούτε στιγμή. Αντιθέτως, μου χάρισαν εκείνη ακριβώς τη ζωντάνια που απαιτεί ένα καλό μυθιστόρημα του είδους για να ζωντανέψω στο μυαλό μου το πώς ήταν τα πράγματα εκεί τότε και να βρεθώ στο πλάι των πρωταγωνιστών και των δεύτερων ρόλων που τους πλαισίωναν. Μάλιστα, αναφορές σε τοποθεσίες που μέχρι και σήμερα βρίσκονται εκεί, παρά τις χιλιάδες αλλαγές και καταστροφές που υπέστησαν με το πέρασμα της Ιστορίας, και τα οποία είχα επισκεφθεί σε πρόσφατο ταξίδι μου στην πόλη, όπως ο Ζωολογικός Κήπος, η Ούντερ ντεν Λίντεν, το Νησί των Μουσείων, το KaDeWe κ. ά. προσθέτανε ειδικό βάρος στη δική μου απόλαυση.

Η Μάγκντα Γκέμπελς, σύζυγος του δεξιού χεριού του Αδόλφου Χίτλερ, γνωστή ως Πρώτη Κυρία του Ράιχ, καλεί την Κλάρα Βάιν στην έπαυλή της στο Σβανενβέρντερ και της ζητάει να εμφανιστεί στο πάρτι του άντρα της για να συνομιλήσει με τις αδελφές Μίτφορντ, Νταϊάνα και Γιούνιτι, Αγγλίδες καλεσμένες που δε γνωρίζουν καλά γερμανικά, οπότε ίσως η Κλάρα, με Άγγλο πατέρα, θα τις βοηθήσει να περάσουν όμορφα. Οι Μίτφορντ είναι υπέρ του φασισμού, δε διστάζουν να προκαλέσουν σκάνδαλα, αγαπούν τα εξεζητημένα πάρτι, είναι φίλες της αδελφής της Κλάρα, Άντζελα, με την οποία μοιράζονται κοινά χαρακτηριστικά στις πολιτικές τους πεποιθήσεις. Μετά από τόσα χρόνια και τόσα μυστικά, η Μάγκντα παραμένει απρόσιτη, ψυχρή και τυπική απέναντι στην ηθοποιό, ακριβώς δηλαδή όπως τη γνωρίσαμε στο πρώτο βιβλίο.

Από τη Μάγκντα μαθαίνει η Κλάρα για τη δολοφονία της Άννα Χάνσεν, μιας κοπέλας που όταν τη γνώρισε πόζαρε γυμνή για τον Μπρούνο Βάις, έναν καλό της φίλο. Η Κλάρα συμμετέχει σε μια ρομαντική κομεντί των στούντιο Ufa κι έχει συνηθίσει πια σε μια ζωή εξαπάτησης. Η πρόσκληση της φαίνεται απλή και αναλογίζεται τα όσα έζησε όταν πρωτοέφτασε στο Βερολίνο, γεγονότα που μαθαίνουμε και άνθρωποι που συναντάμε στο πρώτο βιβλίο, τα «Μαύρα Ρόδα», με τον Λίο Κουίν όμως να έχει εγκαταλείψει τη χώρα. Ο Λίο της λείπει απίστευτα κι ας έχουν χωρίσει ειρηνικά, έχει ανάγκη από ένα ζεστό σώμα πλάι της ενώ ταυτόχρονα συνεχίζει να ενισχύει οικονομικά τον δεκατετράχρονο πλέον Έριχ Σμιτ, ένα σοβαρό και έξυπνο παιδί, μέλος της Χιτλερικής Νεολαίας («Η ιδέα ήταν ότι τα αγόρια δεν έπρεπε να μένουν ήρεμα και ήσυχα. Να μην έχουν χρόνο να ξεφύγουν από την προπαγάνδα και να σκεφτούν», σελ. 169), γιο της φίλης της που έχασε τη ζωή της στο προηγούμενο βιβλίο. Αναπτύσσει έντονα αισθήματα μητρότητας όλα αυτά τα χρόνια που τον βλέπει να μεγαλώνει με τη γιαγιά και τον αδελφό του και τον αγαπά σα να ήταν πραγματικό της παιδί. Τα οικογενειακά λάθη του πατέρα και της αδελφής της και ο φόβος της για την πραγματική ταυτότητα της γιαγιάς της, εξακολουθούν να την ταλανίζουν: «Όταν εργάζομαι ως ηθοποιός είναι η μόνη ώρα που δεν υποκρίνομαι» (σελ. 46).

Στο μυθιστόρημα γνωρίζουμε ακόμη περισσότερο την Κλάρα, η οποία αναπτύσσει συναισθηματικούς δεσμούς που δε θα έπρεπε με άντρες που νιώθει ότι τους εξαπατά κι αυτό αρχίζει να τη δυσαρεστεί και να το νιώθει πιο πρόστυχο από το να τους έγδυνε, χάνοντας έτσι τη συναισθηματική πειθαρχία που απαιτείται. Θα τα παρατήσει άραγε αν τελειώσει αυτή η περιπέτεια; Τα πράγματα γίνονται χειρότερα όταν μαθαίνει ότι το όνομά της άρχισε να συζητιέται στην Γκεστάπο χάρη σ’ έναν πληροφοριοδότη, προκαλώντας υποψίες στη βρετανική αντικατασκοπεία. Ποιος έστρεψε την προσοχή της Γκεστάπο πάνω της και γιατί; Γιατί ανησυχεί το βρετανικό δίκτυο κατασκοπείας; Υπάρχει περίπτωση να έχει ανάμιξη ο Εβραίος και κομμουνιστής Μπρούνο Βάις, με τους έκφυλους για το Ράιχ πίνακές του, που η Κλάρα έχει χάσει τα ίχνη του και ίσως ζει στους δρόμους ή, ακόμη χειρότερα, έχει φυλακιστεί κι είναι ο μόνος που ξέρει για την πραγματική της ταυτότητα; Αρχίζει να μπαίνει σε δεύτερες σκέψεις για την όλη πορεία που ακολουθεί: «Τι ζωή ήταν αυτή, να συναναστρέφεται ανθρώπους που σιχαινόταν τις απόψεις τους, να σχετίζεται με ένα καθεστώς που αντιπροσώπευε όλα όσα μισούσε: εκφοβισμό, βία, κτηνωδία. Να γίνεται φίλη με ανθρώπους που εκπροσωπούν μια εκδοχή της Αγγλίας που δεν αναγνωρίζει» (σελ. 91). Μέσα στη δίνη όλων αυτών των γεγονότων μπλέκεται και με τη δολοφονία της Άννα, γεγονός που τη φέρνει ενώπιον της Γκεστάπο, παρά τις οδηγίες να παραμένει αθέατη και να μην τραβάει την προσοχή ώστε να φέρνει σε πέρας την αποστολή της.

Ο Άρτσι Ντάσιον, ακόλουθος της Βρετανικής Πρεσβείας και πράκτορας της Βρετανικής Υπηρεσίας Πληροφοριών, ο Άλμπερτ Λίντεμαν, διευθυντής παραγωγής, ό,τι πιο κοντινό είχε σε φίλο η Κλάρα στο Βερολίνο, του οποίου η καριέρα άκμασε μετά την αριοποίηση των πάντων και προσπαθεί να εξισορροπεί τη δίψα του για κουτσομπολιό με τη διακριτικότητα που απαιτεί η πολιτική, ο Έρνστ Ούντετ, διάσημος ηθοποιός του Χόλιγουντ, γοητευτικός και περιζήτητος, πλέον σημαντικός για τη Λουφτβάφε λόγω των δεξιοτήτων του στην αεροπλοΐα, επικεφαλής του Τεχνικού της Τμήματος, κάτι που ο πρώην ηθοποιός μισεί, ο Ραλφ Σόμερς, Άγγλος σμηναγός, κοσμοπολίτης, γοητευμένος από το νέο καθεστώς της Γερμανίας, αποφασισμένος να γίνει φίλος του Χίτλερ, που έχει σκοπό να κάνει την Αγγλία σύμμαχο της Γερμανίας και άλλοι ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες είναι προσεκτικά επιλεγμένοι στη στελέχωση της συναρπαστικής αυτής ιστορίας. Επίσης, συναντάμε ξανά τη δημοσιογράφο Μέρι Χάρκερ, που δεν άντεξε μακριά από τη δημοσιογραφία και την Ευρώπη κι έτσι κατέγραψε από κοντά τα δεινά του ισπανικού εμφυλίου και, χάρη σ’ ένα γύρισμα της τύχης, βρήκε δουλειά ξανά σε γερμανική εφημερίδα. Η δολοφονία της Άννα Χάνσεν είναι λαβράκι για κείνη! Μέσω της Χάρκερ μαθαίνουμε για τα σημαντικότερα γεγον��τα του ισπανικού εμφυλίου και περιδιαβαίνουμε την κατεστραμμένη Γκερνίκα («Αυτό που είχε δει η Μέρι ήταν ένας βομβαρδισμός τρομοκράτησης, ένα σφυροκόπημα από αέρος εναντίον ανθρώπων που δεν μπορούσαν να αμυνθούν, με σκοπό να φοβίσει και να τρομοκρατήσει… Ο πραγματικός στόχος στην Γκερνίκα ήταν το ηθικό των ανθρώπων» (σελ. 403) ενώ η συνέχεια είναι άκρως απρόβλεπτη! Όλοι έχουν ένα παρελθόν, το οποίο αποκαλύπτεται τμηματικά ή σε κρίσιμο σημείο, οπότε και χαρίζει μια γερή ανατροπή στην ιστορία, και όλοι αλλάζουν ύστερα από κάποια γεγονότα που ζουν, απότοκα του κοινωνικοπολιτικού και οικονομικού κλίματος που βιώνουν.

Και πάλι η Jane Thynne στο πυκνογραμμένο, πολυεπίιπεδο μυθιστόρημά της καταφέρνει να συνδυάσει αριστοτεχνικά τα πραγματικά ιστορικά γεγονότα με τις ζωές των χαρακτήρων. Εκτός από την Γκερνίκα, μαθαίνουμε για τα διπλωματικά παρασκήνια μεταξύ Γερμανίας και Αγγλίας, σε ανεπίσημο τουλάχιστον επίπεδο, μιας και μεγάλη αναστάτωση προκάλεσε η άφιξη του φιλογερμανού πρώην Άγγλου βασιλιά Εδουάρδου του 8ου που παραιτήθηκε από τον θρόνο για να παντρευτεί τη χωρισμένη Αμερικανίδα Γουόλις Σίμπσον. Το ταξίδι τους αντιστοιχεί σε μεγάλη επιτυχία για το Ράιχ, μιας και θα είναι μεγάλη προπαγάνδα και ντροπή για τη Βρετανία η κίνηση αυτή. Πόσο δύσκολο θα είναι όμως να πάνε όλα καλά όταν η σύζυγος του μέλλοντος Υπουργού Εξωτερικών Γιοάχιμ φον Ρίμπεντροπ, Ανελίς, έχει ακούσει τις φήμες πως ο άντρας της υπήρξε εραστής της Σίμπσον; Πώς θα εξελίσσονταν τα πράγματα αν υπερίσχυαν οι φιλοχιτλερικές φωνές και η Αγγλία συμμαχούσε με τη Γερμανία; Ποιος δουλεύει εντατικά γι’ αυτήν την επίτευξη και με ποιους τρόπους; Ας μην ξεχνάμε πως είμαστε έναν χρόνο μετά τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Βερολίνου, η Γερμανία έχει προελάσει στη Ρηνανία και η υποστήριξή της στην παράταξη του Ισπανού δικτάτορα Φράνκο έχει δείξει τις προθέσεις του καθεστώτος, η διεθνής κατάσταση γίνεται όλο και δυσκολότερη, ο πόλεμος είναι πια πανταχού παρών στην ατμόσφαιρα του Βερολίνου, με όλων των ειδών τις πομπές ανά καιρούς να σταματούν την κυκλοφορία στον δρόμο: «Η Κλάρα αναρωτήθηκε πού μπορεί να πήγαιναν αυτοί οι στρατιώτες. Αυτήν την εποχή όλοι σκέφτονταν το ίδιο» (σελ. 32).



Η δύναμη της προπαγάνδας και πώς κατάφερε να μεγαλουργήσει μ’ αυτήν ο Γιόζεφ Γκέμπελς δίνεται σε όλες τις διαστάσεις της: «Αυτή την εποχή στο Ράιχ υπήρχε πάντα ένας φακός έτοιμος να συλλάβει μια φευγαλέα εικόνα. Για να μαλακώσει τη σκληρή πραγματικότητα, είχε θολή εστίαση και μονόχρωμη λάμψη. Να ανακατασκευάσουν ολόκληρη τη Γερμανία με την αίγλη της λάμψης του υδραργύρου σαν να είναι μια ηθοποιός του σινεμά» (σελ. 67). Όλη αυτή η πολεμική μηχανή βασιζόταν σε αξιώματα όπως: «Προς στιγμή όλα είχαν να κάνουν με τους ύπουλους μπολσεβίκους και την ανάγκη της Γερμανίας να εξοπλιστεί για να προστατεύσει τον κόσμο από τον κομμουνισμό» (σελ. 149). Η άνοδος της Λουφτβάφε και η έμφαση της γερμανικής πολεμικής μηχανής στην αεροπορία και στις επιδρομές από αέρος δίνονται εξίσου παραστατικά και συναρπαστικά, χωρίς να κουράζουν τον αναγνώστη. Ο νέος τρόπος κατασκοπείας θα φέρει μεγάλη διαφορά στον τρόπο διεξαγωγής ενός πολέμου, κάτι που μπορεί να αλλάξει δραστικά την έκβαση οποιασδήποτε μελλοντικής σύγκρουσης. Τι είναι αυτό, ποιος το ανακάλυψε, ποιος το εκμεταλλεύεται και πώς θα το μάθει το αντίπαλο δέος; Πώς είναι δυνατό να μη βλέπει κανείς τι επιφυλάσσει ο Χίτλερ για τον κόσμο;

Παρά το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο, τις μελετημένες διπλωματικές, προσωπικές και κοινωνικές ισορροπίες, τη φρίκη του επερχόμενου πολέμου, στο κείμενο παρεισφρέουν αξιόλογες λογοτεχνικές πινελιές, πρωτότυπες παρομοιώσεις και μεταφορές («μια καλόκαρδη επαρχιωτοπούλα με στήθος που έμοιαζε με ράφι και πρόσωπο καθαρό σαν τραπέζι από ξύλο πεύκου», σελ. 15, «Το πρόσωπό της, με τα σηκωμένα, βγαλμένα φρύδια, ήταν σαν μια άδεια πισίνα, μέσα στην οποία λαχταρούσες να πετάξεις ένα βότσαλο», σελ. 77) αλλά και χιούμορ: «Υπήρχε ένα ανέκδοτο που έλεγε ότι αν ο σύζυγος ήταν στα Τάγματα Εφόδου, η σύζυγος στο Κίνημα Εθνικοσοσιαλιστριών Γυναικών, ο γιος στη Χιτλερική Νεολαία και η κόρη στον Σύνδεσμο Νεαρών Γερμανίδων, τότε το μόνο μέρος όπου μπορούσε να συναντηθεί η οικογένεια ήταν η παρέλαση της Νυρεμβέργης» (σελ. 169).

Τα «Άνθη του χειμώνα» είναι ένα δυνατό, ανατρεπτικό, ρομαντικό αλλά και σκληρό κατασκοπικό μυθιστόρημα που αναπαριστά με αρτιότητα και ενδελεχή μελέτη την ατμόσφαιρα του προπολεμικού Βερολίνου και τις εύθραυστες διεθνείς σχέσεις των ευρωπαϊκών χωρών με τον Αδόλφο Χίτλερ στην εξουσία να προσπαθεί να πραγματοποιήσει το όραμά του, παρασύροντας τον κόσμο σε στιγμές χάους, πόνου και απώλειας. Μια γυναίκα με διπλό ρόλο προσπαθεί μέσα σε αυτόν τον κυκεώνα να βρει τα προσωπικά της πατήματα, να καταλάβει τι θέλει από τη ζωή της, διχάζεται ανάμεσα στην αγάπη και το καθήκον κι όλα αυτά ενώ μια έρευνα για δολοφονία φέρνει στο φως μυστικά που θα καταστρέψουν τη φήμη και το ιδεολογικό υπόβαθρο του ναζισμού γενικότερα και του Χίτλερ ειδικότερα. Αγωνία και συγκίνηση, ρεαλισμός και τρυφερότητα, έρωτας και καθήκον, διπλές ταυτότητες, απανωτές εκπλήξεις είναι μερικά μόνο από τα θετικά χαρακτηριστικά του μυθιστορήματος. Εύχομαι ολόψυχα να μεταφραστούν και τα υπόλοιπα, μιας και η γυναικεία ματιά της Jane Thynne συμπληρώνει ό,τι ξεκίνησε ο σύζυγός της, Philip Kerr, γύρω από την προπολεμική και όχι μόνο Γερμανία, χωρίς όμως να υπολείπεται σε αρτιότητα.

This is the second book in the Clara Vine series. It takes place in 1937, when the Nazi Party has become fully entrenched in every part of German society yet still in the early days before its ultimate mission is clearly revealed to the rest of the world. Clara’s career is advancing and she is portraying her first leading lady role, opposite a WW1 Luftwaffe hero-turned-actor, Ernst Udet.

The mystery part of the story involves a former dancer named Anna Hansen who Clara met when Anna was modeling for Bruno Weiss, a Jewish artist. When this book opens, Anna has become engaged to an SS officer and is living at a Reich Bride School to learn how to be the “ideal” (i.e. Hiltler’s ideal) German wife. Anna is murdered and Clara wants to find out why and by whom.

Another fascinating character is Arno Strauss. He is a (fictional but realistic) veteran of WW1 and the bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War who is tormented by the brutality he helped inflict upon innocent Spanish civilians. Perhaps because of his own inner turmoil, he discerns Clara is a spy.

I thought the plotting in this story was much better than the first. The writing is solid most of the time, and occasionally Ms. Thynne employs a particularly vibrant and/or apt word or phrase. As in the first book, she does an excellent job of world building and the reader can immerse herself in the Berlin of the 1930s - and a terrifying place it was indeed.

The Winter Garden is a spy thriller set in 1937 Berlin. It mixes fact and fiction quite successfully with real-life people like Goebbels and the wives of various top ranking Nazis interacting with figments of the author's imagination.
Pre-war Berlin is nicely recreated and there is a good feel for the menace of the police state. A air of mystery is successfully sustained throughout and the climax well-handled. My chief concern, reflecting on the novel after I'd finished reading it, is that the main plot premise is so preposterous to make the novel belong to the realms of science fiction.
I shall read other novels by this author because she has an excellent feel for time and place but she has a long way to go before she could match the work of the kings of pre-war Berlin fiction Philip Kerr and David Downing.

I enjoyed this WWII spy book and liked that it portrays aspects of the war not normally shown.

I just have to say I find it terrible that the book changes names depending on if it was published in the US or in the UK. This is very confusing and terrible for readers.

This is indeed a mixed bag of an historical fiction series featuring Clara Vine, an Anglo-German actress living in Berlin in the ominous and violent early years of the Third Reich. Despite the fact that Clara is received warmly into the heart of Nazi Europe, as warmly as anyone could be by its vicious regime and by the various twisted characters running the show---Goebbels,his long suffering but enabling wife Magda, Goering and the Furher himself all make appearances--she takes it upon herself to act as a kind of low-range secret agent for England, spilling all the domestic tidbits about her fascist friends to the Foreign Office. What is not so well depicted here is the soap opera-ish Masterpiece Mystery plots and the Girls Own/ feminist heroics of Clara, who never seems that real or interesting; what is interesting is the amount of architectural and sociological detail about a vanished city and time in which we see , Nazism infiltrating the Weimar republic, brick by brick. How could a retelling of the Hitler's rise as seen in the changing face of of Berlin ever be dull? Very readable and almost good. An interesting take also on how Hitler saw the role of women in serving the Fatherland: barefoot, pregnant in the kitchen.

Second books in a series are difficult.. they have to live up to the first and make you want to read the next. Woman in the Shadows accomplished the latter and was pretty close to the former. There were things that happened & relationships built in between the first two books that I would liked to have known more about. Also it’s pretty obvious who and what we can expect to appear again later in the series.. which I both like and wish it was more of a mystery. All in all, good story. I like it. Time to read the next one.

Jane Thynne is seriously one of the best historical fiction authors I’ve ever encountered. A great read! Would be five stars if not for the bizarre and confusing gap between book one and book two—I felt that the storyline from book one was wrapped up just so Thynne could start a new story for Clara. Regardless, I enjoyed this read, and as always, am awed by the author’s mastery at storytelling.

This is a well researched novel. And for that I almost gave it 3 stars.
But since the author can't decide if it is a mystery or a spy novel or a wartime historical novel...she ends up writing all 3 at once in a maddening convoluted way.
Two of the 3 plots are moderately intertwined and the mystery story feels forced the entire time and it seems everyone thinks our heroine great spy is an actual spy...which not so good for a spy. The historical fiction part is the strength of this book, but also has subplots for that can really over reaching. The book's research did intrigue me enough to ho look for historical fiction of the same era in Germany during the build up of war.

3 1/2 maybe. I got this ARC from Simon and Schuster and was really looking forward to it. The plot sounded like something I'd enjoy, and all in all, I did, but for some clunky writing now and then. (Where were the editors? At one stage the same thought is paraphrased about 5 times in the space of about 5 pages.) I must admit I didn't realise Winter Garden was the second part of a trilogy, and I have to wonder if I would have enjoyed it more had I read the first book (Black Roses). Our heroine, Clara Vine, is an actress with an English Nazi sympathiser for a father and a now-deceased (I presume) German mother. She's living in Berlin in 1937, starring in films, whilst secretly working as a spy for the British. There are a slew of real life characters in the book -- Hitler, Goebells, Goering, Ernst Udet, the Mitford sisters, Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson to name a few -- and I thought this was an ambitious idea which Thynne mostly pulled off. (Some of these people I knew a little of and some I googled whilst reading and found their stories quite fascinating/horrifying.) The mystery part of the book is not very satisfying. It involves the murder of a young girl at a Nazi bride school which a friend of Clara's (Mary, an American journalist) is investigating (for her newspaper). I don't think there was enough of this investigation to make me care. It was almost a B-plot and I thought there could have been more focus on its details. Mary's character seems to just turn up and I was supposed to instantly love her. The POV even changes to hers for a few chapters, and I was mystified by this and her presence in the book at all at times. (This might be where reading the first book could have come in handy, as I assume her character was introduced in it.) Another character who just turns up and we're supposed to love is Clara's godson whom she's adopted. Clara thinks over and over how much she loves him, and I suppose we're supposed to too, just from Clara's say-so that he's a wonderful boy. I saw no evidence of his appeal, however. If the book isn't a mystery, it should then be a romance, and this is really where I have to lower the rating. I hated the 'romance' of the book. (I'll readily admit this is why I read books, the romance, so when I don't enjoy it, it's disappointing.) There are two potential suitors for Clara in the book. I enjoyed the one character very much (a scarred Lutwaffe pilot who may or may not be trustworthy). The other (a fellow Englishman), not so much. In fact, I got the sense the latter character wasn't even part of the original draft and some editor forced Thynne to add him to ensure the readers' romantic buttons were pushed. Sorry, guys, but he just left me cold. He really seemed to be tossed in haphazardly. I don't understand why Clara trusted him; I don't understand why she was attracted to him; I don't understand why I was supposed to want Clara to be with him. The entire plot with Strauss is much more thought out and interesting. Thynne should have just settled for him only. I guess it is a good book in the sense that I am now curious as to what happened in the first/will happen in the 3rd. But it's a disappointment given how spectacular it could have been with just a few minor changes.

I really expected to like this book a lot. I am very interested in historical fiction of the WWII period. A half-British, half-German actress living in Berlin in the late 30s who had a secret Jewish grandmother; what could go wrong?! I was intrigued. The writing is clear and the parts of the book that deal with little-known aspects of the pre-war era in Germany are fascinating. For example, I am certain few people know of the Bride School that existed to train fiancées of SS officers in how to be perfect SS wives. While I knew of the Duke of Windsor's friendliness with the Nazi regime, and that the Nazis wanted to return him to power if they gained control of Britain, I was not aware that an actual agreement to that effect existed (if, indeed, it did). And I was certainly unaware of Hitler's 'behaving badly' at secret parties before his rise to power (again, if he actually did). What detracts from the book are the excessively detailed descriptions of streets and landmarks in and around Berlin and Munich that break up the flow of the story, particularly since many have lengthy, almost unpronounceable names. Unless one is intimately familiar with the German language and the cities themselves this level of detail, rather than helping paint a picture of the surroundings, is just annoying. Furthermore the detailed references to the Spanish Civil War and what Clara's friends had done and seen there was another distraction. None of this was well woven into the main story, and it broke up the flow of what was going on in the here and now. Finally, there were just too many coincidences in the story. For example, Clara was exceptionally fearful for her safety and good at her spy job, so why would she allow Unity Mitford to burst in on her at the exact moment she had the crucial evidence of the story spread out in front of her? It was Also unbelievable that Mary's Spanish war friend 'Pericles' was probably Ralph's long lost best friend. I had all of the Clara Vine books on my 'want to read' list in anticipation of really loving this book. They are not there any longer.

My fascination with undercover work during WWII continues. This novel, set in Nazi Germany prior to the war, was well laced with suspense as well as reality. The sinister bride schools, brainchild of Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, were an intriguing element. And woven through the fast moving plot were other famous personages from that era – Goering, Goebbels, Hitler and their women, Charles Lindbergh, and German aviators Ernst Udet and Freiherr von Richthofen, the Red Baron of WWI. At the center of this seething hotbed of political ambition and unrest was fictitious English actress and double agent Clara Vine, heroine of Jane Thynne’s previous novel, Black Roses. ‘To seduce and betray, these were the tools of espionage and every spy learned to live with them. To deny a friendship was one thing, but to betray something precious to you, something you treasured, whether it be your country or your lover, that was a deeper fear.’ It was an intricate plot, set against an historical backdrop which had clearly been well researched. Most enjoyable! I do hope the author plans another addition to this series.

The adventures of Clara Vine, and Englishwoman and film actress in pre-World War II Germany, continue in this second volume of the series. Clara is still deeply involved in listening to the gossip of the Nazi wives and reporting what she learns back to London. But she now gets involved with Ralph Sommers who is a sort of free lance operative and through him, she is drawn ever deeper into spying on the Nazis. When a young woman she had previously known, Anna Hansen, is mysteriously killed and one of Anna's possessions makes its way to Clara, she becomes involved in even more danger than she realizes is possible.

I love these books because they are not only good history but also because they tell the story through the Nazi wives. The author has a real knack for portraying the underlying terror and tension of the times. The books are told in a film noir style and almost seem like a black and white movie in words.

I picked this up not realising that it followed on from Black Roses, oops, and for the most part that wasn't a problem, but there were occasions when I just felt like I was missing out on a little bit of her personality and background etc. And while I definitely wouldn't describe it as a fast paced read, I did still find it quite enjoyable in a subtle way. It wasn't in your face. The characters all intrigued me, particularly Strauss, and I couldn't for the life of me work out how all these seemingly unrelated events were all going to be linked somehow. Will I read more of Clara's adventures as a spy in Nazi Germany? Perhaps, but I'd have to be in the right mood.

Wish this had been better written as it disappoints as a chilled and/or mystery. I find women authors in this genre all too often feel compelled to give us long passages on how the hero or heroine feels emotionally during or after every event. Enough already. We want action, not long descriptions of the anguish, ecstasy, or heartbreak they feel at the time. I believe I speak for many in my half of the gender pool.....this is catering to only 50% of your of your readers. I did like the historical references to Germany in 1930's and the Nazi villain's she portrays (kept me as a reader after all)

I'll be honest - this book was way too easy for me to put down and took me much longer than my usual amount of time to finish. I cannot put my finger on the problem, though. Perhaps, since this is the second book in the series and I have not read the first book, I was not familiar enough with the characters. But, for the most part Thynne provides plenty of background information to keep me up to speed. Perhaps I just feel like it sometimes got bogged down in the details. I expected a historical spy thriller, but this was not thrilling enough for me. I will go back and read more in the series to give Clara another chance.

Woman in the Shadows starts off with a bang with Nazi Bride School pupil Anna murdered in the school’s gardens. Her death is covered up, but Clara, a half British half German actress, realizes that she knows the former chorus dancer and wonders what all the hush up is about. She turns to her American journalist friend to find out what she can. Meanwhile, Clara uses her position at the German film studio to rub shoulders with the elite who are close to Hitler and gather information for the British government. Hitler is touting peace, but it seems pretty clear to Clara that war is coming. She is tasked with gaining information about the blossoming aeronautics program, but she must be on her guard because rumor has it that the Gestapo has her in their sites. She finds it more difficult with each passing day to hide her true feelings about Hitler’s Germany, especially with her “godson” spouting the indoctrination of the Hitler Youth. As she puts together the pieces of Anna’s death, she faces more and more danger.

This is the first book by Jane Thynne that I have read, and I was looking forward to an exciting World War II spy thriller. However, for the most part I found the story to be anything but thrilling. It plods along at a glacial pace, making it far too easy to put down. There are elements here that could make it truly great, but it gets bogged down in the details, details often make for rather clunky writing. Thynne’s meticulous research is obvious, but instead of bringing Clara’s world to life, I felt like I was reading a very dry history lecture. I love historical fiction and mysteries and fully realize that not everything moves at a lightening twenty-first century pace, but the book’s uneven tempo is a missed opportunity. Woman in the Shadows could have been a gripping, taut nail-biter.

Where Thynne does excel is in portraying the stark contrast between the general population and Jews of Germany and the decadence of Hitler’s privileged circle of confidants. She does a good job of interweaving real historical figures with the fictional characters. There are times where she creates atmosphere, such as a foot chase on the dark streets of Berlin or the buzz of a cocktail party, and I feel transported to 1937. Part of what I enjoy about historical fiction is feeling like I learned something by the end of the book, and I did indeed pick up tidbits. The subplot involving the Spanish Civil War and the aeronautics information are particularly noteworthy.

As expected, Clara’s character is quite complex. Really, all of the characters, with the exception of Anna’s roommate Ilse, are multifaceted. The most exciting aspect of the book was trying to see beyond the surface of the characters. Isn’t that what we all love about spy novels, the cat and mouse game and feeling that nothing is really as it seems? Characters Ralph and Arno are worth mentioning. Their inner and out scars and background stories, along with their interactions with Clara, were the best parts of the book.

Woman in the Shadows was just an OK read for me. Perhaps I had too high of expectations. The shining moments really do shine, but these moments are often hard to see, hidden in the clunky details. I will give the Clara Vine series another chance though. I recommend this book to those who are more interested in World War II history than adventure and do not mind the slow pace of the novel. If you are after a heart racing spy thriller, look elsewhere.
