To save himself from another cycle of death and rebirth, Subaru must confront the beast in the forest. But what will happen to him there when his dear friend Rem snaps?
3.5/5 In this volume we see the backstory of Ram and Rem, the twin demons whose complex for each other exists since they were kids.
Ram was the best at pretty much everything, so adults around her praised her and talked non-stop about her abilities –in a few words, she was a valuable asset. On the contraire, little Rem was not as good as her older sister, and so she developed a self-pity personality from a very young age. Despite this, Ram always saw Rem as her precious sister, and even when she lost her horn, she tried to protect her.
Now, back in the present timeline, Subaru finally knows who’s the one cursing him and along with Rem, they fight those big hounds that were threating the village. At the end, Roswaal takes care of the problem and Subaru talks with Rem, telling her that she should smile more often, for the future is uncertain, but the present is a precious thing they all should share.
With this, the 2nd chapter is completed. The 5th volume is only a mix of short stories like the last two that come in here, but they don’t actually interfere with the original timeline, so you can skip them without any problem.
We finally get some answers to the curse and conclude the story arc in the mansion. As a bonus, we get some of the backstory of Rem and Ram, connecting it back to the Crying Red Demon story from Volume 2.
(Then, it ends with two stupid comic stories, one that is kind of a harem manga knock-off where all the female characters from the mansion take a bath and one about mayonnaise. That's right. Mayonnaise. If you mostly care about the actual story, I advise skipping those.)
With the source of the curse revealed in the last volume Subaru and Rem find themselves looking for the children who were playing with an unexpectedly cute hellbeast looking like a puppy (you can't always trust cute.) Also in this book we get more insight into the past of the twins Rem and Ram, some insight to demon culture in the world Subaru has found himself dying to help (bad pun based on his power), and if that is not enough instead of a short story at the end of this book we get a manga version of "The Roswaal Manor Girls' Meet (Hot Bath Edition) which was a short story in an earlier version, and another short manga about creating mayo in a world devoid of such condiments. :)
