Frieda Klein #8

The Day of the Dead

Rate this book
Now the final book in this extraordinary series is here. And it's an ending you'll never forget.

A decade ago, psychologist Frieda Klein was sucked into the orbit of Dean Reeve -- a killer able to impersonate almost anyone, a man who can disappear without a trace, a psychopath obsessed with Frieda herself.

In the years since, Frieda has worked with -- and sometimes against -- the London police in solving their most baffling cases. But now she's in hiding, driven to isolation by Reeve. When a series of murders announces his return, Frieda must emerge from the shadows to confront her nemesis. And it's a showdown she might not survive.

This gripping cat-and-mouse thriller pits one of the most fascinating characters in contemporary fiction against an enemy like none other. Smart, sophisticated, and spellbinding, it's a novel to leave you breathless.

Note: (Nicci Gerrard and Sean French also write separately.)

Nicci Gerrard was born in June 1958 in Worcestershire. After graduating with a first class honours degree in English Literature from Oxford University, she began her first job, working with emotionally disturbed children in Sheffield. In that same year she married journalist Colin Hughes.

In the early eighties she taught English Literature in Sheffield, London and Los Angeles, but moved into publishing in 1985 with the launch of Women's Review, a magazine for women on art, literature and female issues.

In 1987 Nicci had a son, Edgar, followed by a daughter, Anna, in 1988, but a year later her marriage to Colin Hughes broke down.

In 1989 she became acting literary editor at the New Statesman, before moving to the Observer, where she was deputy literary editor for five years, and then a feature writer and executive editor.

It was while she was at the New Statesman that she met Sean French.

Sean French was born in May 1959 in Bristol, to a British father and Swedish mother. He too studied English Literature at Oxford University at the same time as Nicci, also graduating with a first class degree, but their paths didn't cross until 1990. In 1981 he won Vogue magazine's Writing Talent Contest, and from 1981 to 1986 he was their theatre critic. During that time he also worked at the Sunday Times as deputy literary editor and television critic, and was the film critic for Marie Claire and deputy editor of New Society.

Sean and Nicci were married in Hackney in October 1990. Their daughters, Hadley and Molly, were born in 1991 and 1993.

By the mid-nineties Sean had had two novels published, The Imaginary Monkey and The Dreamer of Dreams, as well as numerous non-fiction books, including biographies of Jane Fonda and Brigitte Bardot.

In 1995 Nicci and Sean began work on their first joint novel and adopted the pseudonym of Nicci French. The Memory Game was published to great acclaim in 1997 followed by The Safe House (1998), Killing Me Softly (1999), Beneath the Skin (2000), The Red Room (2001), Land of the Living (2002), Secret Smile (2003), Catch Me When I Fall (2005), Losing You (2006) and Until It's Over (2008). Their latest novel together is What To Do When Someone Dies (2009).

Nicci and Sean also continue to write separately. Nicci still works as a journalist for the Observer, covering high-profile trials including those of Fred and Rose West, and Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr. Novels include Things We Knew Were True (2003), Solace (2005) and The Moment You Were Gone (2007). Sean's last novel is Start From Here (2004).

This is the eighth, and much anticipated final book in the Frieda Klein series.

It begins with a car running out of control down a north London high street. The man at the wheel is found to be dead - but sensationally, he’s actually been dead for a week!

On Hampstead Heath, a seemingly unremarkable bonfire is found to contain the body of another victim - and as we are about to discover, both these deaths are the work of a serial killer who has a message for psychologist Frieda Klein, and the message is this - that he intends to include her in his list of victims, but there are to be many more before he exacts his revenge on Frieda!

Frieda’s insight into when and where her arch nemesis will strike again, proves surprisingly prescient, but unfortunately she doesn’t have the monopoly here, as the killer seems to be particularly well informed as to her whereabouts too,( even though she’s in hiding ). But can she outwit him in his game of cat and mouse? To add to her distress, she also feels responsible for the safety of Lola, a law student who is writing a dissertation on Frieda, and who has been dragged unwittingly into this maelstrom.

This is a deftly constructed narrative that will be much appreciated by avid fans of this popular series. The air is suffused with menace throughout, the pace and tension assured. The characters are well depicted, and it’s impossible for the reader not to become absorbed in the plot, which included a neat little twist that this reader never saw coming.

Day Of The Dead is a compelling book with all the elements you would expect from the successful writing partnership of Nicci Gerard and Sean French, and unsurprisingly, I highly recommend it.

The Day of the Dead by Nicci French is a 2018 William Morrow Paperbacks publication.

This is the last book in the Frieda Klein series, so I’ve been hoarding it, putting off what I was sure would be a sad goodbye. However, I have it on good authority that ‘Nicci French’ has a new book coming out soon, so I suppose it’s time to bid Freida and this awesome series farewell.

We’ve all been awaiting the final and ultimate showdown between Freida and her arch enemy Dean Reeve. The question is how many more people will Dean kill and will Freida be one of them?

As the story begins, Freida has extricated herself from her friends and family to keep them safe.

But, in a bizarre twist of fate, a young woman named Lola gets tossed into Freida’s path when it is suggested she write her dissertation on Freida, delving into her penchant for putting herself in dangerous situations. Unfortunately, Lola is now on Dean’s radar, and Freida must keep a close eye on her, lest she too becomes one of Dean’s victims.

Meanwhile, Dean is most assuredly escalating and Freida’s time is growing short. How, when and where Dean will choose their final face to face confrontation will keep readers on edge from beginning to end.

I could not have asked for a better end to such a stellar series. Tripping down memory lane a little, I recall my first impressions of Freida were a bit mixed. But, with each subsequent installment, I grew to like her more and more. This last installment is very, very atmospheric and intense. The conclusion did not let me down, after a build up that increased over seven previous installments- something I was a bit worried about.

That said, I will certainly miss Freida, and I am grateful to have made her acquaintance, as well as all the other recurring characters in the series.

If you haven’t read this series, I highly recommend it! Now that it has concluded, with only eight installments, it would be a good series, to ‘binge’ read.

Now that is how you complete a series of eight books - with style and cunning and an unexpected turn of events right at the very end. No disappointment in the finale at all! In fact it is probably one of the best books in the series.

Frieda has withdrawn from her friends and gone underground as she attempts to draw out Dean Reeve who has been her constant nemesis throughout the series. It appears she is ready to sacrifice herself in order to end his trail of murders. There are many complications to this plan, including her friends who are not prepared to let her go.

I read this in one day and enjoyed every word. Sad now it is all over but gosh it was good while it lasted:)

I have to say, I was nervous about this book, the last in the series, because I wasn't sure I wanted it to end, or was wary how it would end. I won't summarize the plot, because it is difficult without revealing anything that would spoil the story, and I want other readers to experience the same rapt tension I did. A gripping thriller and a satisfying ending to a series I have enjoyed. I'm already looking forward to see what Nicci French comes up with next!

After faithfully following the Frieda Klein series for years and becoming rather fond of this cool and composed fictional psychotherapist who has left a trail of bodies behind her over the course of the previous seven books, The Day of the Dead was one of my most anticipated new releases this year. Now that I have read it, I feel that certain sense of sadness that comes with farewelling a good friend.

Lovers of the series will know that all previous books are overshadowed by a cat-and-mouse game with the dark spectre of Dean Reeve, a psychopathic killer obsessed with Frieda, who has ratcheted up a bigger body count than Ted Bundy in his efforts to get Frieda’s attention. Initially thought to be a figment of Frieda’s imagination, the police have finally come to believe her claims that Reeve is at the centre of a murder spree targeting seemingly random victims around London, but so far no one has been able to outwit him and he has been staying one step ahead of all efforts to catch him. He has not shied away from targeting those nearest and dearest to Frieda, making her so afraid for the safety of her family and friends that she knows she must disappear out of their lives in an effort to keep them safe. So it is a very different Frieda we meet in this latest instalment, a Frieda who has left her old life behind and gone underground to divert Reeve's attention away from her loved ones. But of course, best laid plans and all that ... her old life is about to catch up with her!

Frieda has really grown on me over the years and developed into a true-to-life character I have loved to see back in every new book in the series. With Frieda, the French duo have managed to create both a mysterious, aloof and yet enigmatic protagonist as the centre of their mysteries. Frieda, who wanders the streets of London, following the courses of ancient forgotten rivers in order to clear her head, or plays solitary games of chess in her house with only the cat for company. I loved joining Frieda on her rambles through the city and know that I will have to look up some of those waterways if I ever make it to London! But the books would be nothing without the rich cast of Frieda’s friends and family, who have stayed loyal to her with a true love that overcomes even the threat of death from a psychopathic murderer like Reeve. I will dearly miss Josef’s soulful dark eyes, Yvette’s prickliness, Olivia’s drunken hysterics and Karlsson’s calm reflections. What a great bunch of people!

Each book in the series introduces a new interesting character, and this time it is the bubbly criminology student Lola Hayes who accidentally stumbles into Frieda’s path when her lecturer suggest that she write a dissertation about Frieda’s life. With Frieda on the run for her life, this will not be an easy task, and one that Lola may live to regret.

Enough said. To sum it up briefly, The Day of the Dead is a worthy finale to a series that has given me years of enjoyment, and I will miss the anticipation of a new book. It has all the hallmarks of previous books in the series: it is dark, and gritty and utterly compelling. If you haven’t discovered this series yet, I strongly suggest you pick up the first book in the series and read them all in order – and be assured that Frieda’s character may appear prickly and distant in the first book, but will grow on you until she feels like a well-worn coat you can’t wait to put on to head out into the dark windy night for a walk. I loved also how this skilled author duo know exactly when to pull the plug on the final resolution, so it is not wrapped and bow-tied too neatly. *applause* A five star read for me, all done and dusted in one long all-nighter because I couldn’t put it down!

Thank you to Edelweiss and William Morrow for the free electronic copy of this novel and for giving me the opportunity to provide an honest review.

This book is a Mystery Crime Thriller, and it is the 8th book in the Frieda Klein series. I have not read or review any of other book in this series. This book is about a psychologist Frieda Klein that has gone underground because a serial killer is killing people to leave her messages and the killer wants to kill her. A student (Lola) finds her and then she goes underground with Frieda. Frieda feels that Lola safety is in her hands. This is a gripping thriller that keeps you on your toes and a satisfying ending to a series. I won a copy of this book from a goodreads giveaway, but this review is 100% my own opinion.

I was looking forward to reading the final book in the Frieda Klein series by Nicci Gerrard and Sean French who write under the banner Nicci French. After enjoying the previous seven books in the series I was hoping that this instalment would bring it to a satisfying finale. Well I need't have been concerned. In Day of the Dead, the consultant psychologist Frieda Klein finds herself in a difficult situation when a criminology student writes a paper about her. Frieda has been in hiding from the serial killer Dean Reeve, who is killing individuals in an attempt to uncover her whereabouts.
This final book has all the qualities of the previous ones but gives a satisfying conclusion to a story that many of us have followed from book to book. The book is dark, mysterious and addictive and this series is well worth reading from the start to get the full Frieda Klein experience. Frieda is not a character that you will instantly like but gradually she will grow on you and become very real.
Excellent series, very satisfied.

I'm hosting a GIVEAWAY on my Facebook page. U.S. only. Entries close 8/17/18 11:59pm EST.

Day of the Dead is the eighth and final book in the Freida Klein series. Though I've seen these books everywhere, I must confess that this is the first one I've read. Though it worked well as a stand-alone, I found myself hungry for more details about the beginning of Frieda's journey with Dean Reeve. It's a bit of a Catch-22: Do I go back to the beginning of the series even though I know how it will all play out? Or do I wait in anticipation of their next book or series? I think if I can work it in, I'll read the first, Blue Monday, and then decide if I need read them all.

I very much enjoyed Nicci French's writing style. It was straightforward and easy to read while maintaining the perfect level of "smart". The characters are well-developed and flawed in relatable and realistic ways. I liked that the authors didn't feel the need to make everything and everyone fit neatly into boxes. When writing about murderers, police, and psychologists, I think it's sometimes easy to default to stereotyping. I'm so glad this wasn't the case here. My sympathies waxed and waned for certain characters. I found myself asking: Should I be feeling bad for this person? Does this justify that? Nothin' like a little moral dilemma added to the mix!

I found the ending to be quite satisfying and I think I'd have perhaps found it even more so if I'd read all of the books in the series as so many of French's fans have. I'd definitely be interested in reading more Nicci French.

4.25/5 stars

Not interesting enough for me to be rated beyond three stars.

I’m familiar with Dr. Freida Klein, and her odd, clipped, but efficient personality. Her obsessive way of walking around outdoors is to be able to think deeply and blow off steam. Someone please, give this woman a pedometer and a new pair of walking shoes!

The serial killer, Dean Reeves, who is after Freida, lives on in this story. He is good at avoiding being caught for all this time, after many deceased victims. He kills people, and sets up “clues” that only Dr. Klein can discern. They are odd, unbelievable clues that the police disregard because they make no sense to them. But, they make sense to her and to Dean. It’s a weird thing these two have going on.

Enter into the story, Lola, a young, flighty student, who is struggling with what topic to write her dissertation on. She ends up being referred to writing of Dr. Freida Klein with disastrous results and being sucked into the ongoing cat and mouse game between Freida and Dean, the killer.

Lola was a completely unlikeable character. She was flighty, weak, easily manipulated, had an inability to listen to directions and a poor liar. Lola experienced the physical brutality of her flatmate at the hands of Dean Reeves and she was shell shocked. She continued to decline in mind and behavior, entering a deep-depressive state - leave it to Freida to look after Lola and try to get her to get moving, out and about and to eat, for had these two never come together, Lola would have stayed untainted. Quite honestly, I wanted to slap Lola for her immature silliness and cowardice. She could have been an accomplice to crimes when all was said and done. She had put not only herself at risk of being killed, but Freida and others, too. Such a silly, stupid girl. No sympathy from me for her. She’s one of the reasons this story only got rated a 3 star. I got very-tired of Lola and her constant neediness.

I want to cry my head off. I have been putting off reading this book, this last book of the stellar Frieda Klein series. But I put on my big girl panties, took a deep breath, and did it. And it was wonderful, just as the books before it. The authors (a husband/wife team) did a wonderful job with this series, developing the characters and the storylines, and now we, the readers, have come to the end of the line. I will miss this series, and all of the characters, but especially dauntless Frieda.

I so urge readers who are not familiar with these books, to start now. It is so important to begin at the beginning. That sounds like something Frieda would say!

My favorite book of my favorite series EVER!! I am so sad it's over! A genuine tension-filled, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller... But with the best characters. My eyes were actually filling up towards the end! (& it's really not that kind of book!🤣🤣) Just so good.. ❤️❤️

What an extraordinary 'week' it has been for Frieda Klein - finally brought to an end in this episode. And I'm torn over this finale: on one hand, we have far too much of whiny, needy Lola and her coincidental meeting which draws her someplace dark; but on the other, I gulped this down in pretty much one session so the French grip is tight.

After the journey we have been on through these eight books, I'd have liked a more incisive encounter between Frieda and Dean Reeve, yet it's undoubtedly powerful to leave him enigmatic to the end - he continues to haunt precisely because his malice (is it?) and violence are so extreme and inexorable, and the connection between him and Frieda so nebulous and yet tangible. There's more than a hint of gothic doppelganger about the relationship, he the Hyde to her Dr Jekyll.

And Frieda? Surely one of the most complete, complex, uncompromising women in crime fiction. Strong without being 'feisty', deeply intelligent, wounded but without the need to share her inner world with anyone, compassionate while rejecting all the trappings of niceness and helpfulness that are so attached to social constructions of femininity - she's a landmark character whose identity is free from the more usual shapings of maternity, of a romantic relationship. The imagery of her house, the independence of cats, the underground rivers which are invisible but which leave their indelible trace on London and to which Frieda has an almost psychic connection all play a sophisticated role in both the psychogeography of these books (and the term gets an amusing name check in this episode) and in delineating Frieda's character with subtlety and nuance.

The more I think about it, the cleverer I find this story: in giving us an ending that is perhaps deliberately anti-climactic, French shifts the conflict from the external 'monster' to something more internal. And now that Frieda's closed-in house is open to the exterior with Josef's innovation, what will happen next?

Yes, an extraordinary series that transcends the borders of the crime genre - it's a journey that I'll be taking again.

Earlier this year, I read Sunday Silence by Nicci French as part of a TLC Book Tour. Although I was jumping into the series with the penultimate book, I thoroughly enjoyed the read and was looking forward to seeing how the series ended. The promise of a showdown between heroine Frieda Klein and notorious serial killer Dean Reeve was almost too much to pass up. When I was offered to review the final novel and kick of TLC's latest tour, I jumped at the opportunity.

Lola is in a panic. Her dissertation is due soon, and she hasn't even begun to come up with a topic for it. She isn't the most academically motivated student, but she never imagined she would be at this point. Desperately, she seeks the guidance of her professor. The professor has seen this type of unengaged student before. He offers the half-hearted suggestion that Lola find someone to shadow who works in her field of interest. He suggests the budding criminologist find infamous psychologist Frieda Klein. There's only one problem. No one knows where Frieda Klein is.

This moment has been a long time coming. What started as a perfectly normal consulting relationship between a psychologist and the police has turned into something horrible. Dr. Frieda Klein has watched as her world has been turned upside down. Her life has become intertwined with the obsessive delusions of murderer Dean Reeve. He's latched onto her for some reason, leaving a path of bodies and heartache in his wake. Now Frieda has cut herself off from the rest of the world. She's moved from her home, changed her appearance, and broken communication with her friends and family. Now she waits. Dean Reeve is out there, and she's the only one who can stop him.

In The Day of the Dead, the authorial duo Nicci French bring their long-running series to a satisfying conclusion. Eight novels in, they have built an extremely engaging cast of characters and an ever-intriguing cat and mouse scenario between Klein and Reeve. As the final novel in the series, The Day of the Dead works just fine as a standalone read, but I definitely think the ending will be more satisfying for those who have experienced the other books. More than the previous book, this novel sees the author delve deeper into Klein's mental state, an experience that is made even more poignant by the fact that Klein is a psychologist. The Day of the Dead has everything readers will want from a final novel and ends with a near perfect scenario that succeeds on multiple levels.

Frieda Kline is missing because she wants to be missing, and now Lola who is writing her dissertation has gone out of touch.

Lola is writing a dissertation for her criminology class and wanted to write about Frieda and her involvement in police cases and her connection to Dean Reeve.

Lola’s mentor suggested walking in Frieda’s shoes to get an idea about her. Lola did just that, but it didn’t turn out too well. Lola mistakenly and unknowingly came across Dean Reeve, a serial killer who kills anyone who has contact with Frieda, and who still has it out for Frieda. Dean kills others to get to her.

No one has been able to track Dean down. Dean has been a character along with Frieda in previous books.

Was Dean Reeve back? Frieda definitely thought so, and Dean made sure she knew. And...Frieda knew he wouldn’t stop until he killed her.

The book begins as we find that a killer is on the loose. The murders started with a dead man in a stolen car barreling down a steep hill, and another one was a dead man being burned in a bonfire. But that wasn’t the end of the bodies. The count kept getting higher, and the bodies followed a pattern.

This is only the second book I have read in this series, and I actually didn’t know it was a series when I read the first one. I was not lost while reading so it seems as if you can start in the middle...things went smoothly.

I can see why the series is so well liked. Frieda Kline is a very popular character, but this will be the last book in this series. Frieda is a bit rough outwardly, but she is actually a good Samaritan that the police always call in for assistance on their cases. Frieda is also a psycho analyst.

DAY OF THE DEAD is suspenseful, and you will want to tell Frieda to stop being so stubborn about not allowing the police to take total control of this new Dean Reeve’s madness instead of trying to solve it on her own.

Readers who enjoy suspense, twists and turns, stubborn characters, and a killer who knows how to allude everyone will enjoy this book.

My only complaint is that it was a bit long. 4/5

This book was given to me as an ARC. All opinions are my own.

I wish I could give a higher rating since it's the last book of the Frieda Klein series but exactly because of it I can't!
I wanted to see more of the characters I got to know and love from the first books like Karlsson, Chloe, Joseph etc but instead I got to read about Lola that I didn't get to like during my reading the book. I liked reading about Frieda since it was the last mystery with her and I got to like her a bit more in this instalment. I found the way her story concluded very fitting to her character!
The plot was interesting, had some twists and turns but not interesting enough like in the first books of the series but I did enjoy it reading.
In my opinion even though the authors aren't that great in the romance area they should give their readers a little bit more about Frieda's future in this matter since they where expecting such a development after reading all the books but leaving it open to interpretation works for me.
I felt kind of sad after closing the book since I know that was the last time I was reading an adventure with Frieda and all her friends but I'm also happy because in my opinion it's better to close a story than to drag it on forever!

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S OVER! It was one hell of a ride and I'm definitely going to miss my yearly Frieda Klein fix. For the last eight years there has always been a new Frieda book in March/April, but this was the final installment. It's over, I know it is, everything came to a close in the last 60 pages or so. It was great, just the way it had to end and so typically Frieda. But at the same time I can't help but wish for more. I need at least 10 more chapters about how things'll go from now on. Tell me more please.

@ Sean & Nicci just give me a 500 page book about Frieda & Karlsson & Josef & Reuben & Chloë & Jack & Olivia & Alexei & Sasha & Yvette

The problem about the Frieda Klein series is that the characters are never very believable (including Frieda). Their actions and reactions are never fully understandable in the rational world we live in. I tend to 'suspend my disbelief' when it comes to thrillers, but this series really stretched my patience.
This last instalment was definitely not the worst of the lot, but equally nowhere near the best.
The 'grand finale' was simply underwhelming and the whole book felt perfunctionary. The newly introduced character was so annoying and acted in such a silly way that your attention was detracted from whom should have been the real focus: Frieda and Dean.
In particular the pair's very unhealthy obsession with each other is severely downplayed here. It felt like a very rushed and half-baked book.
In a way I'm glad the series came to its conclusion, but it's a real shame about the way it ended, because it did have a lot of potential.
I hope Nicci French will now feel free to write a 'non-series' book which hopefully will rate up there with their best.

The Frieda Klein series was written in collaboration by authors Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. Day of the Dead is the eighth and final installment. I fell in love with the character of Frieda Klein when I read Blue Monday for the 2017 Pop Sugar Challenge (A Book with a day of the week in the title). I found it to be a quick and absorbing read so when I saw this title on Edelweiss I pleaded my case for a free copy. Although I have not read the entire series YET, I found that Day of the Dead could easily be read as a stand alone novel. I was happy to see some of the characters that I was introduced to in Blue Monday and got the sense that if I had read the series in order I would have gotten much more out of this book. I will certainly be returning to read the other 6 books in this series and will keep books by "Nicci French" on my radar.

“It started with Monday.
But it doesn’t end with Sunday.”
🔹

“I like to fish. I sit by the water and I wait. I can wait all day. I wait until the line twitches. Even the smallest tug and I feel it. I’m a patient man.”
- Dean Reeve

“I had to disappear, not because I was in danger from Dean Reeve but because everyone I was close to was in danger. I was cursed, like a plague carrier, and I needed to remove myself.”
- Frieda Klein

——

“Is dumping a body in a canal really staging? Isn’t that just one of the things that people do with dead bodies? Bury them. Burn them. Throw them in canals. Sorry. Am I sounding a bit negative? I don’t mean to be.”
- Lola Hayes

——

“There has been too much damage, too much loss. I have no intention of dying, but I’m not scared of it. I am scared of being the cause of other people’s deaths.”

The protagonist Frieda Klein is missing for the first half of the book. Like Sherlock Holmes (and Moriarty), she has a nemesis, Dean Reeve, who is determined to kill her, and he has already murdered many in his determination to get to her. This plot device is one of my least favorite in a crime novel, which is my reason for 4 stars. When she enters the story, things become more interesting. I will confess by the last 100 pages, it was hard to put down. This may be the last Frieda Klein book. The series may have run its course. I will miss her friend Josef, the Ukrainian builder, and some of her friends. However, I may have had my fill of Frieda Klein.
