Her gifts will be her salvation… or her downfall.

No one gave Aviva a choice about becoming a monster. Since the night of her murder she’s been forced to accept a new reality—burned by sunlight, dependent on the blood of the living, searching for her place in a dark world she didn't believe existed until she awoke as a vampire.

She’s still struggling to accept her fate and master her dark powers when the news arrives: rogue vampires are torturing and killing human residents of the city, threatening the secrecy and uneasy peace of the supernatural world.

As the hunt begins, Aviva’s deliciously distracting trainer, Daniel, helps her seek out her unique strengths. The gifts she discovers are shameful in the eyes of vampire society—and they may be the only thing standing between a pack of ruthless paranormal killers and the unsuspecting humans they prey on.

To see more reviews, considering taking a peek at my first in series YA book blog here

Aviva is dead. Aviva is now back from the dead-a monster, a vampire, powerful in a way that has other vampires repulsed and she has no idea who turned her or why. She should have died that dark night, but she isn't and she must make do with the life given to her. Now the hunt begins and only the slightly cranky Daniel seems to be willing to take a chance on Aviva and train her to be the weapon that can stop destruction.

This is 100% a five-star book. I became so quickly obsessed with my book despite my slight aversion to reading vampire books nowadays. Resurrection is a whole different take on vampires. Won't say anything spoilery-but will say that Aviva's powers are pretty cool.

Can we talk for a second how lovely the name Aviva is!!? So lovely!! let's also talk about how Aviva is a great character. A bad-ass chick who has been dealt kind of a really shitty hand, and to be honest she is in no way perfect. THAT my friends is what makes her such an amazing character. She's not a goody two shoes, she doesn't toe the line, but she does have her own set of morals and doesn't cross lines she doesn't believe should be crossed. For good reasons, of course.

But Hetal, it's another romance vampire novels...YES. BUT IT IS SO MUCH MORE. Please believe me! It's mature, and sexy, and dark, and truly toes the line of YA/NA paranormal romance.
A word of caution, however, Resurrection deals with some dark themes and may not be suitable to particularly young audiences. As I said, it toes the edge between YA and NA.

I cannot WAIT till the next book comes out!!

I received an ARC copy and here's my review. This is a must read! This is not like any other vampire story I've read and I found the changes to be refreshing, intriguing, and original. In this story not everyone can become a vampire and not everyone who can become one is turned. Aviva is not your typical vampire. Actually, her being a vampire wasn't planned or even something she asked for. She wasn't supposed to be turned. Now she must learn to deal with this new existence.

Each vampire has a gift, something that sets them apart from all the others, but Aviva has no idea what her gift is. Only with the unusual advice of her trainer, Daniel, does she discover and explore her gift, a gift that proves valuable when a sting of murders take place and rogue vampires are the primary suspects.

But her gift has a cost. Will her gift bring about the end of these murders or will it cost Aviva something she's not ready to let go of yet?

This was a special offer on Amazon and as it seemed to be a slightly different take on Vampires, so I thought I’d give it a try.

The main character is Aviva and the author really likes to describe what she is seeing, thinking, feeling etc. it just feels like she trying too hard.

The story developed really slowly and about half way through I was beginning to wonder if anything was going happen and then it turned into a teen romance and I just gave up.

This is a decadently dark read. Finally, vampires done right! Gritty, dark and sexy! Aviva is a character that got in my head and I instantly became obsessed with her and her story. She is strong, complex, and dealing with the challenges both positive and negative of being made into a vampire. This story delivers on so many levels. There is mystery, intrigue, and the beginnings of a romance along with so much more but I don't want to spoil it by saying too much. It is such an original and interesting take on vampires and a incredible addition to the Urban Fantasy genre. If you like vampires you can't miss this series. You will love it! If you're like me, and they really aren't your thing don't hesitate to give this a try. You will be surprised by how compulsively addicting and amazing this book is. This little gem of a book offers something refreshing and new to a very popular genre. I can't wait for the next book in the series. So far my favorite book of 2017!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is brilliant! Tanith Frost is my new favorite author! Resurrection is raw and delicious! If you are looking for a page-turner filled with profanity and sexy-galore this is the book to read! Aviva is kick-ass! Different than the others she sets out to uncover secrets older than time itself, dabbing in business that's not hers is not a light task, she's fierce, and strong. I was surprised with every event in this book, as twists and turn of events kept me glued to pages! Hands down a 5-Star must read!

I picked up these books at NL Horror Con a few weekends ago, and I'm really glad that I did. They've really struck a chord with me for two reasons.

Firstly, because it's a genre that I enjoy but set in familiar territory. Sometimes reading things that are set in NL can feel forced or awkward to me, but here it's handled perfectly. I enjoyed following Aviva's adventures in places I could picture and have been to myself, at least some of them.

Secondly, and most importantly, the author has such a great command of writing in the first person that the reader really is transported into this dark and semi-familiar world. That sounds cliche, I know, but the writing really is that solid.

I won't spoil the story for those of you who haven't read it yet, but the ending of this made me immediately reach for Book 2 in the series. There were only 6 of them out when I picked them up, but I'm glad to hear that 7 is now out (or soon will be, my apologies if I'm wrong!) because I've got a feeling I'm going to be going through these pretty darn quick.

Interesting - 3.5 rounded up

This was an intriguing book - though not because of the plot. That was rather mundane and seems to serve more are an introduction to these characters and this world. No, it was intriguing because of the writing, or rather, the writing style. First person always offers a bit more internal conversation and revelation of the main character, but this one seemed to take it a step beyond and really dig deep into the inner workings of Aviva. Almost melodic in tone, it seems to suit a memoir more than an Urban Fantasy, and though there was action to be had, it still felt slow and unhurried. It was strange but not off putting. Unique to this genre.

Pros:
- Style of writing is almost soothing? And invitation to understand.
- New world.

Cons:
- Very plodding.
- Plot is average.
- Physical connection seemed to come out of nowhere.
- So... what ARE the rules then?

On the whole I enjoyed the read. And some parts read very well, some, not so much.
It's first person, so that's an excuse for most of coming of vampire age introspection, and in some places that works very well. I'd have preferred a simple past tense telling, but it isn't, and once you get used to that, then it kinda flows. Except that some of the introspectiveness just keeps rehashing the same things so the story goes not very far.. other than straight to NA romance.

The plot is not a surprise, but there are times when we get a glimmer of true vampire darkness. It just didn't last very long and then the romance kicks in again at the end.

So although I did enjoy most of the story, I'm not rushing to get part two. I'll possibly read it at some point, but there is no rush.

This book is a bit of a departure from your typical vampire story. No they don't glitter. Each vamp has their own gifts and how they use them is not entirely up to them. This book is well written with the author's unique flair and while it has action, suspense, romance, vampires, and mystery it is not cluttered or difficult to read. It flows beautifully and keeps you engaged throughout. I can't wait to see what the next installment in the series brings.

How wonderful it is to find a local fantasy author! I've heard other readers talk about how neat it is to read something set in your home town, but I've never had that experience before. Set in my province of Newfoundland, Canada - mainly in the capital city of St. John's - this is a solid start to an UF series and left me wanting to find out more about the main characters. I also really appreciated that, unlike most of the Newfoundland fiction I've read, the story was not set in dialect or full of local slang.

Aviva was murdered. Thanks to a special blood factor she didn't even know she possessed, she was brought back from the dead by an unknown sire. She woke up to a totally changed world in a training facility for others like her - except no one knows who authorized her making, a process that is normally strictly controlled.

Fast forward a year, and Aviva and her friend Trixie are just finishing their intensive real-world training, learning how to fit into human society while utilizing their new vampiric powers - super strength, hearing, etc. - and learning to control their ever-present bloodlust.

I really liked the unusual vampire hierarchy, with regional Clans in charge of recruiting and changing humans with the special blood factor (which vampires can smell and taste) as well as maintaining the Stock. These are humans willing to feed vampires, both for the high of the venom in their bite and the special emotion-inducing drugs that the vampires give them, to change the taste of the blood. These run the gamut between pain and pleasure.

In St. John's, the Stock gathers at a secret downtown bar called the Inferno. No one dies, everything is consensual, and the system works perfectly (except for a small number of humans who donate too often and get addicted) - but it may not be enough to satisfy those who remember older, wilder, darker days when to feed meant to kill.

A group of rogue vampires is committing very public, high profile murders which the Elders of Clan Maelstrom - to which Aviva, Trixie and their trainer Daniel belong - are hard-pressed to clean up fast enough. Every new vampire finds a role in the Clan. Daniel is an Investigator, and he takes his proteges along as a sort of test to see if either is suitable for this kind of work.

I quickly grew to like Aviva, despite her name which seemed a little too exotic at first (which was not helped by Trixie's "Viva the Vampire!" jokes). She did not chose to become a vampire, and she really misses being human (despite repeatedly being told that she has to learn to distance herself from her old life and memories, for her sanity), but she is determined to make the best of it and find a place for herself in this strange new hierarchy. Every vampire has a special gift - like reading minds - and Aviva's is slow to manifest; but when it does, it only serves to make her more different, when all she wants is to fit in and be accepted.

The pace is quick-moving and the romance is believable. The story could actually have been a little longer, and it would have been nice to delve a bit deeper into the main characters and the workings of Maelstrom. The villains were too predictable but the ending was satisfying . As Aviva learns to let go of her human empathy and embrace the dark "void" of her vampire power, it will be interesting to see where her journey takes her!

Immortal Souless: Resurrection
By Tanith Frost

I received this book via the author for review purposes

An amazing and. poetic book about a vampire, Aviva, who holds on to her piece of humanity against the rules of the Vampire Society. Reminiscent of Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire, we experience her struggles as she tries to solve a series of horrific murders committed by Rogues, vampires that have lost the right to exist in the Society.
The writing is positively sublime and Tanith Frost's talent reminds me of another Tanith – Tanith Lee with its depth and emotions. Aviva faces so many trials because she seems to have a scrap of a soul among the soulless vampires, and this leads her mentor Daniel to try to convert her to the Void owned blood suckers. Ms. Frost also has some of the most unusual and beautiful metaphors I've seen. While she uses the first person present tense to lead us on her literary journey, it is not a trick to speed up the story.
The world-building is brilliant, giving us a glance on what it would take to remain completely anonymous in the digital age, where cameras, cell phones and computer records abound.
Character's are flesh and blood (pun intended) as we see Aviva's training partner as a dark mirror to the moral Aviva. Like Rice, Yarbro and even LKH, Ms. Frost addresses everything from holy places to feeding, to sex to politics.
The sexual tension between Daniel and Aviva simmers at just the right temperature, until it boils over. And we discover that even the most controlled vampire may have emotions that run deep.
My only complaint is the villain, if not the reason for the villain's actions is pretty clear upon their introduction.
Well done Ms. Frost. This book is definitely Book Nerd approved

This was a perfect bit of reading candy; exactly what I wanted.

Tanith Frost's Resurrection is an urban fantasy vampire novel set in Newfoundland, mostly around St. John's. It offers some new ideas on vampire mythology (or at least new to me), just as vampire fangs excreting venom that acts almost like a drug to humans (I've read such things in vampire saliva, but never in the fangs themselves), and that vampires are genetically predetermined through something vampires can smell. I do enjoy the different takes on vampire lore.

Aviva has the vampire gene, but wasn't supposed to be turned into a vampire. Usually there's grooming and preparation and foreknowledge of the vampire world, but Aviva wasn't part of that when she died and was turned. So now, a fairly new vampire, she's learning about the world and having trouble pushing her humanity aside. Vampire society is highly structured, with a bar in downtown St. John's with a human clientele looking to be fed upon, so when rogue vampires kill a family, Aviva's mentor is asked to investigate, and Aviva is brought along to see if she, with her newer eyes, can see anything important.

This is a great vampire adventure, where Aviva starts to come into her own as a vampire while helping search for the killers. It is also incredibly steamy. The first feeding is hot, and then the really sexy scenes start!

This is a fun book, and a great relaxing read. I look forward to reading the next one.

I haven't read any vampire books since the Twilight Series, even though a glut of them were released during that time, most varying shades of the same story.  Tanith Frost has managed to pen an original vampire tale and a world that will suck (pun totally intended) you in.  No sparkly vamps here, folks.

Resurrection introduces us to Aviva, a complex, young vampire who had no say in the matter when she was created.  She struggles with what and who she is and what's expected of her in this new life and is only beginning to understand her power.  This is a hierarchical and organized vampire world - vamps aren't permitted to run rampant and feed on the general population, but things aren't always as they seem, and that's something I enjoyed about this book.  There's a bit of a mystery, as a rogue group of vamps have taken matters into their own hands and Aviva is among those charged with tracking them down.  The supporting characters are all well-drawn and I especially look forward to learning more about mysterious Daniel.

With mystery, suspense, and a touch of romance, Resurrection is a dark, enticing, original read I'd highly recommend to paranormal fans or readers looking for a new take on vampires.

I received a digital ARC from the author.

Resurrection by Tanith Frost was a fun foray into the world of vampires, but not your usual vampires. The author painted a unique twist on the usual vampire tale where they have long since given up on hunting down humans and instead, enjoy a somewhat symbiotic relationship with their prey. Or so it seems.

Part paranormal romance, part crime thriller, it was a fresh take on the average vampire driven story. The world-building was new and complex. The writing was clear, engaging, and easy to follow. The characters were unique and interesting.

My only complaint is that the narrative voice was very cool and thought driven – which, okay, belonged to a vampire, I get it… but for a vampire that was still very much hung up on her empathy for humans, it came across as a bit dry. The narrative voice dragged the pace of the book to a saunter and made it hard to empathize with the main character at times.

That aside, I still very much enjoyed the book, and if you like crime thrillers and paranormal stories, this may be the perfect mash-up for you.

Wow - just wow! This is an original perspective on the traditional stories of vampires and takes the reader through a journey of a new vampire's self-discovery. The common assumptions about vampires are challenged, and new light is thrown onto the lives of vampires and their inner thoughts.

The story follows Aviva, who is a new vampire only two vampire years old, and her growth as a vampire while trying to come to terms with the fact that she is a vampire, and all that it entails. A murder mystery is weaved through this story of self-discovery, as well as hints of a romance, although vampires cannot have "romances". Throughout this journey, Aviva discovers that she has a unique gift that can help her clan face difficult times but could see her shunned from the clan.

A great read that will keep you turning the pages and wanting more! (Luckily, this is the first book in the series!)

Resurrection is different to other vampire bike read before and I really enjoyed this take on the genre.

Aviva was never a candidate for vampirism despite the fact she carries the Blood Factor. However, after one tragic night, she is turned by an unknown vampire and has been struggling ever since.

When a group of rogues starts killing humans, her trainer Daniel is tasked with investigating and takes her along to test is she is ready to end her training.

It's a pretty fast paced book with plenty of action from the start and I absolutely loved Aviva. She wants so bad to be a good vampire and fit into her new life, but to do that she is supposed to have no connection to the living. However it seems that her humanity is the trigger for her abilities and possibly the one thing that could help her and Daniel catch the rogues.

I can't wait to see where this series goes.

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this book. Having given up on vampire books after the 1990s, I never expected to run across another such book I wanted to read. Should have known that if anyone could write a vampire book I would enjoy, it would be Ms. Frost. It is an interesting society she has created, which you learn through one who doesn't quite fit. No more details, except to say the writing is great, as are characters and plot development. The caveat: if you are sensitive to minor gore, sex, or the occasional curse, and that outweighs a desire for an excellent read, this may not be for you.

This was a phenomenal new take on vampires. I loved the concept, and I loved the characters. Daniel is my new book boyfriend. There. I've said it. Seriously, this book is great from cover to cover. I loved getting to know the characters and all the interesting quirks the author gave them. The journey of Aviva to learn and slowly accept her differences was really well handled. The mystery expanded with every page, the action was exciting, and the pacing was outstanding. I loved reading a book set in Newfoundland, a place I've never been. I saw it through the characters' eyes, and now I want to visit! Do yourself a favor and read this book!

I loved this book. The character Aviva is someone I liked and believed in. Often authors write characters that don’t react as you would expect people ( or vampires) to. That was not the case here. Avivas actions seemed very very real to me.
The authors storyline is a novel twist to the vampire genre and she created a super interesting new universe.
I could give or take the sex stuff but I just skim read through that bit. The romance itself was essential to the plot and characters.
Overall, very well done. I’ve already bought book two for my Kindle.

I got the wonderful opportunity to read this early and I will certainly be reading it again soon! I loved Tanith Frost's take on vampires; they feel real and believable. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in what I would label as a somewhat darker vampire romance and you don't mind some cuss words ;). I've always been iffy on vampire novels, but I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Intimate, immediate and enthralling from the first page. Lovely writing, good story and a take on vampires I've not seen before. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the rest of the series.

One major issue

Loved it! Except for the fact that the vampires are not allowed to do anything. A good chunk of the book complains about them being able to do anything, to the point where you understand and sympathize with the bad guys. The only thing the vampires seem to be allowed to do is feed, and even then with strict rules. Hope there is less complaining and more action to follow.

New vampire needs to learn the ropes. Aviva is not happy being a vampire but she already is one so she has no choice. There are also rogue vampires killing humans which is a bad thing for vampires as a whole. Aviva gets involved in solving the case. Barely escapes with her new vampire life. This is an ok book. Did not get really involved in the characters. The mystery was easily solved. View of vampires and their culture was different but not intriguing enough to carry the book.

As far as vampire fiction goes, this was actually an interesting take on the genre, but it wasn't spectacular. I'd like to have seen more of the 'investigations' and learn more about the hierarchy of the clans as opposed to the main characters lustful thoughts about her trainer. It was also nice to see more novels set in my beautiful province.

Aviva was murdered - and then woke up as a vampire.

She has spent her time learning the rules of vampire society while also learning to move past her previous humanity - humans are just stock for feeding on when they give their consent. Some vampires have gone rogue and are draining random humans.

Aviva becomes part of the team investigating the killings.

Interesting story concept.

Wasn’t bad, wasn’t good. Had potential, but didn’t quite reach it. Seemed long, but a bit too short. Dragged and raced. Was really interesting, but not interesting enough to stop me from getting distracted regularly. Leaves me interested in the series, but not enough to read it. If you can think of more opposites, it has them too.
