Audrey Faye is one of my favorite authors and this book, written together with her daughter, is the perfect example why :)
There is so much love in these characters. They let nothing stop them, not fear, not doubt.
I was asked once what I like about Audrey Faye's books and the only way to describe it was that they make me feel the same way my favorite comfort food does. When I read them I just get wrapped in love and yearning and the wonders of magic. No matter if it's witches or lesbian assassins, or, in this case, dragons and elves :) I can't wait for the rest of the books and I really hope Kellan gets her own story :) and her own dragon, one day <3
Tonight I'm gonna dream of a little peach-pink terror with a big heart and a love for barrel-rolls :)

Dragon Kin: Sapphire & Lotus

What entertaining first book in this series. Sapphire (not a good name) is an excellent character, I only wish Lotus (not a good name) had a voice.

Such a lovely and wise story. Everything that made me one of Audrey’s loyal fans is woven into this book of a “not-very-special” elf and the baby dragon she bonds with. Community, friendship, hard lessons and poignant truths couched in words that feel as soothing as a warm blanket on a cold day: Audrey’s unique style is here in full force. A story of being brave when all you feel is fear, Dragon Kin is the first in what promises to be a series as good as Audrey’s others (which you definitely should read after you’ve read this one!) I didn’t expect to love a book about dragons this much, but the lessons that Sapphire and Lotus must learn are lessons that I, too, am struggling with; I found their story so familiar it felt like my own. Audrey has found a wonderfully imaginative co-author in her daughter and I look forward very much to the next book in this series!

I am thinking 2.5 stars for this book. I want to start off by saying the covers of these Dragon Kin books are phenomenal and sucked me in right away. As for the story itself it seemed well written and deep enough to really get me involved. The only problem that I had was that nothing really happened... There really wasn't any climax or action or really anything. I mean it was set up really well I felt but it just never went anywhere.

We start off with the queen of the dragons searching for a way to save dragon kind. At this time they are at war with the elves... for reasons? I don't think it really said why. Either way a prophecy ensues for way in the future 5 dragons with 5 kin riders. Fast forward we have Sapphire, our first elven FMC, who is not a really strong character to be sure. She is meek, insecure, and fearful of a lot. While running away from her super amazing family of super talented brothers and sisters, she finds an egg. From here a destiny and a kinship ensues, though we never get anywhere near that mark. I am confused by where the book ends since the journey hasn't even began yet. This was almost like just a small short story providing the back story of how Sapphire and Lotus meet.. I am wondering where the real story comes in?

I felt the story had a ton of potential I just don't understand what its purpose is in the whole yet I guess. I would definitely like to see where its going though.

Dragons and Elves Learning To Fly Together

Sapphire is a 14 year old elf girl who feels unimportant in her large and important elf clan. When she runs away she gets lost. She is drawn to an egg, high in the trees, little knowing it belongs a dragon.

This story feels heavily influenced by Anne McCaffrey’s Dragons of Pern series, something I grew up reading. In the same way that the dragons of Pern bonded with humans, the dragons in this book bond with elves, also often when quite young.

The story is about bravery and overcoming fear. It’s about duty and love and picking yourself up one more time when you don’t believe you can, just to achieve something that needs doing.

It’s a sweet story and filled with morals and ethics and all that good stuff. It would be a great book for younger adults.

3.5/5.0

This is a sweet story that looks to be just the beginning of a longer, overarching series. This is shown in that it doesn’t really have a specific arc in the book, nor does it have a definite end - or even semi-end. It reads like a serial story that is just getting off the ground.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however. It is a lovely little tale that begins with Sapphire, the youngest child of quite a large brood, who feels left out and unneeded. So, she runs into the woods to get away from everyone for a while. As night descends and she realizes she might farther away from home than she realized, she notices a beautiful egg in the upper branches of a tree.

From that beginning we follow Sapphire as she discovers an entire world that includes and protects dragons. She also learns that she is bound to the one that resided in the egg she initially found and must now learn how to ride and protect it. It’s a delightful story but doesn’t get terribly far before the book ends. There are supposedly five young girls who will be bound to dragons and who are supposed to save the dragon race in some way. Each book will introduce one of these girls, and presumably, further the overall arc of the series.

While I was enchanted with the sweetness and themes this story carried, I haven’t decided if I want to continue through five books just to see how the initial set-up plays out… we’ll see.

Imaginative and Wonderful

This book is amazing. It is imaginative and wonderful and absolutely filled with lessons for everyone reading it. I love that: a good story on its own but a great story in its depth. Try this one, it's worth every minute.

Not a lot happened in this book, it felt more like it was working up to a plot for the next books in the series, but I still enjoyed it. I liked the bond between Sapphire and Lotus and it was easy for me to empathize and connect with the characters

Good Book

I loved the books this author wrote under another name and when I found out these are also written by Debora Geary I immediately had to have them. She writes with such feeling and very kind characters that they become someone you wish you could know.

I rated it 4 stars as it was a good book for the YA genre and a good, light read for young people beginning to read. If I had rated it under what I personally thought of the book I would have to rate it a 3. So technically, I guess this rating is a 3.5.

This book was a very light and cute read. Nothing serious ever really happened and there was a slight build up that never quite reached its crescendo but, nevertheless, I was able to read all the way through without becoming too bored of it. This book is definitely for the younger readers, and I believe they would appreciate it more than I did.

I love dragon books and the details of how the minds of dragons work. This particular story did not have a real dragon character in my opinion. The dragons seemed more human than dragon, like they were humans with dragon skin. The author seemed to try to make the dragons seem more “wild” and “animal” but it was not accomplished, in my opinion. For me, having the dragon be so immature for so long, and have a bratty human personality was not attractive. Luckily, the main character kept up the pace and made up for the inadequate dragons with her suborn personality.

There was not very much detail in this book, and the detail that was described was seemingly pointless. There was more detail in describing an apple than anything else, but, again, this book is geared towards the younger generation and not an adult. I was hoping this book would cover more information than a first flight and a senseless fear of heights, as the summary seemed very intriguing. Alas, that was not the case

Utterly delightful book! Far too short though, as I found myself thinking about it for ages after finishing it, and wishing there was more to the story. Fortunately it's the first book in a series, so I have the rest to look forward to.

I can't quite explain the charm... the plot is very quickly described - the elf, Sapphire, bonds with the dragon, Lotus, and has to teach it how to behave... and most specifically, how to fly! - but the book showcases Audrey Faye's skill with the pen (a skill, it would seem, that her daughter has inherited), and I grew to love all the characters and wanted to know more about them. I smiled my way through it, and immediately sent it off to others for them to read.

Fantastic new series

Audrey Faye has done it again. Great characters that you become emotionally invested in and a great story. This is the story of a young elf and the dragon baby she bonds with high up in a tree. First book in a series and once again I will hate waiting for the next installment. Highly recommend even if you are not a fantasy reader because the fantasy part is only a backdrop for reading about two creatures who have real emotions and doubts about their abilities and place in the universe.

Laughter, tears and cheers!!

The Elf's feelings of lacking any real sense of worth pulled me straight from page one! Saving a forlorn egg gave her a purpose and strength that never lets up! Fears shared, friends aiding, I could hardly put it down! A hero in constant denial skims memories that everyone has dealt with, young or old!! I'm so glad I bought both books at the same time and dread the rest of the story won't be ready when I finish book 2! I'm already tapping my foot in impatience!!

I really enjoyed this book.
Right from the start, I was captivated by Sapphire and Lotus. I personally do not think I would climb up a tree because I saw an egg in a tree, so I admire Sapphire's courage.

The only thing is that I wish there was some more information provided on their lives and given insights behind everything, but that is probably because this world is so interesting.

I look forward to reading the other books in this series (currently only 1 is out at the moment, but I hope that will change soonish).

Fearfully exhilarating!!!

I didn't know what to expect from this book but I can safely say now that this book was FUN!!!! I shared the fear with Sapphire and Lotus of being in the tree and then I shared their joy when they flew off the cliff!!! I wish I had a Dragon to fly with and to love and share life with!!! I have my dogs but I can't fly on them!!! Lol! I'm looking forward to the next book, the story of Lily and Oceana!

Loved it, loved it, loved it! The mother daughter duo really works and created something unique here.
You get to share in an adventure with 2 young, scared, brave, funny, stubborn and very resourceful ladies and you get to feel everything they feel right alongside them. I felt the joy of that maiden flight all the way to my toes! Thank you for this precious gift!

Magic at it's best

If you have ever loved and or longed for a dragon, you will adore this book!! The superb story with enough heart to keep you turning the pages until the end, and like me you will not want it to come to an end. The sorrow and joy written in the plot will steal your heart and make you long to be a part of their world, even if it can only be as an observer.

Loved the characters.

ALL really good fiction is primarily character driven. The premise is excellent, and the characters are well written enough that I would love to meet them! I also appreciate the time taken to polish the book. Nothing jerks me out of a good world like a badly spelled word, or a sentence that barely makes sense!

I read them out of order?

It seems I read the first two Dragon Kin books out of order. That's okay though now I have to wait for the last three in the series. So far I have really enjoyed these books. I would encourage anyone who enjoys dragon books to read Audrey's books. But read them in the right order.

I have always loved stories of dragons! I also have not enjoyed a story about dragons as much as this one, since the "White Dragon" Ruth by Anne McCaffrey. The characters were very believable and endearing, the plot easily followed and the emotions literally plucked like a very good harp player. I highly recommend this book for old and young and look forward to the rest of the series.

Best yet

This was wonderful. I loved every minute of it, from the too ordinary elf to the peach colored dragon. Challenge, sweetness and a little bit of ornery thrown in for flavor.
Can't wait for the next one.

I am hooked.

I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next one. The cover art was what attracted me to the book in the first place. However, by the end of the first page I was hooked.

Brilliant!

I have to read this (these) authors' books keeping an eye out for stray tears (no pun intended). There's always an undercurrent of family-usually chosen-and so much love. We all need to feel the way Audrey Faye (and her alter ego) makes us...

Fortunately, this book is the first in a series because otherwise it would be far too short with a lot of unanswered questions. But it is charming and delightful and makes me look very much forward to hearing more about Sapphire and her friends.
