Thirty-five years later, I can recall how much I enjoyed reading the Berenstain Bears to my children.
In this book, children are urged to buckle down and focus on the core subjects in school and to focus on their studies. The fun will come later.
Parents are urged to be supportive and creative in their discipline of their children.

I grew up with these books all the time! (please note that I am only reading children's books these days because of may younger cousins' recommendations)

This was so much fun to go through and experience, I felt like I was experiencing what Brother Bear was going through while he had gotten back his sad report card.

It was really inspirational and helpful, especially for kids who need that encouragement to keep going and to keep on trying harder!!!

Brother Bear brings home a GROTESQUE report card. Papa Bear becomes apoplectic. Thus, the gloom of punishment conveys the mood of the story. Brother Bear wises up and resumes studying to rejoin his extracurriculars. Plus, the entire family unites to help him study.

I would love to read about more families banding together for scholastic achievement in real life.

A good lesson to go over with the kids. Especially as school is getting ready to start.

Not enough schema for this one but good theme of family working together to help each other. The 80s version is still better IMO-"Trouble at Schol"

A rehash of the plot in The Berenstain Bears' Trouble at School with diminished returns. Not once do finding a better balance between Brother's schoolwork and extracurricular activities or Brother scaling back on the sports he participates in enter the discussion as possible solutions to remedying his poor grades. At the end of the book, Brother earning a couple of improved marks as a result of the entire family pitching in to help suggest that the problem is completely solved, which is not a feasible long-term solution in the real world.

Brother gets a crappy report card and gets grounded, which makes everyone miserable, including his family who grounded him. I feel "meh" toward this one, as I'm sure I will toward most of the ones I didn't grow up reading. I have mixed feelings on how the family helped Brother with his schoolwork. Was Brother really struggling with school? I thought he got his bad grades from slacking off and loving sports.

Good lesson taught well by the Berenstain Bears. I like that we not only learn about consequences, but we also see how hard you can work to raise your grades. And how rewarding that work is.

Brother Bear gets grounded for bringing home D's on his report card and the whole family suffers - no video games, no TV, no movies. Good thing they all know how to study together!
