The Mysterious Island. Part 2 - The Abandoned: "We may brave human laws, but we cannot resist natural ones."
Jules Gabriel Verne was born on February 8th, 1828 on Île Feydeau, a small artificial island on the Loire River in Nantes. His father wanted his son to take over the family law practice. Jules started along this course and despite graduating with a licence en droit in January 1851 was soon diverted by the lure of literature and by his own ambitious talents in this direction. He wrote for the theatre and for magazines and soon with the publication of his first novel; Five Weeks in a Balloon on January 31st, 1863 he had begun his career as an admired and popular author. For many, many years the works flowed, usually no less than and often more than two volumes per year. His meticulous research and imaginative setting and narratives soon established him as a top selling author and he became both famous and wealthy. By publishing firstly as a serialised book and then as a complete book sales swelled as did his reputation. His earnings increased further due to the runaway success from the stage adaptations of Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (1874) and Michel Strogoff (1876), Strangely he was overlooked for honours. He was not even nominated for membership of the Académie Française. After the death of both his mother and Hetzel, Jules began to publish darker works but still at a prodigious rate. In 1888, Jules entered politics and was elected town councillor of Amiens, and then served for fifteen years. Jules was now entering the last period of his life. His works continued to flow albeit at a slower pace. His reconciled with his son, Michel who now became an active contributor to his father’s works and, when the senior Verne died, would continue to contribute and publish his father’s works, ensuring that the work was kept in the public eye and the legacy preserved. On March 24th, 1905, while ill with diabetes, Jules Verne died at his home at 44 Boulevard Longueville, Amiens. As a legacy Jules Verne is forever remembered as ‘The Father of Science Fiction’. With his rigorous research Jules was not only able to make his works realistic but also to project forward and predict many new things that would eventually come to pass – either in real life or as the basis for others to use in their own science fiction. Extraordinary indeed.

La seconda parte delle avventure sulla misteriosa isola di Lincoln ci mostrano i nostri naufraghi sempre più a loro agio su questa isola sperduta e disabitata, alle prese con la prospettiva di non essere da soli sull'Isola.
Mentre le prove di interventi "esterni" si sommano fino a diventare inoppugnabili, la possibilità di un nuovo naufragio in zona si fa pressante spingendo i nostri a esplorare meglio l'isola alla ricerca dei resti di un relitto e magari di qualche altro loro simile.
Smith risulta meno fastidioso che in passato, con la sua manifesta onnipotenza, mentre a lasciare parecchio interdetti è mastro Jep, l'orango che diviene loro servitore.
Un elemento completamente fantastico, parrebbe, non fosse che all'epoca questa idea non sarebbe parsa troppo ridicola...
Il punto di forza del libro è però il collegamento a sorpresa con un altro tomo Verniano, I figli del capitano Grant.
Ero rimasto oltremodo perplesso, leggendo questa storia, di vedere che era indicata come collegata a quella del Capitano Nemo e a questa (che ancora non avevo letto).
La nebbia si dipana in questo volume centrale, che ci fornisce l'ingresso in scena di un personaggio a noi già noto (e a questo punto ci si aspetta nella parte finale la comparsa di un altro personaggio, che spieghi i misteri che circondano l'isola).

Es una lectura ligera, pero muy entretenida, destacó a los personajes y por sobre todo, la escritura y la forma que tiene Jules de atraerte a la historia como si se tratara de la represión primaria (chiste freudiano).
Maravillada y encantada de haber conocido a Jules este año.
Te voy a volver a leer capo.

Neste segundo volume, as mesmas personagens: engenheiro Cyrus Smith, jornalista Gedeão Spilett, Preto Nab, marinheiro Pencroff, seu protegido o jovem Harbert Brown, e o cão Top.
A que se acrescentam duas: Jup (abreviatura de Júpiter), que é uma espécie de orangotango que se "civiliza" (a certa altura até fuma cachimbo) e depois de meio do livro, vão resgatar um "abandonado" à ilha próxima com o nome de Tabor e que afinal é um velho conhecido dos livros de Júlio Verne uma vez que se trata de uma personagem odiosa que entrou no livro "os filhos do capitão Grant" e que tinha sido deixado nessa ilha pra expiar os seus pecados, de nome ayrton.
É claro que a esperança é recuperar moralmente esta personagem e, de facto, ele mostra-se arrependidissimo e será natural a sua reinserção entre a sociedade humana com tão nobres companheiros a ajudá-lo.
o afcto mais importante do livro talvez seja a construção de um pequeno navio a que chamam Bonadventure que perimitiu por exemplo a navegação à ilha próxima.
Este segundo volume continua a exploração da ilha, bastante descritivo e por isso um pouco aborrecido. Acontecem situações inexplicáveis (tartaruga que se vira sózinha; Canoa que aparece; baú com coisas no meio de uma praia; mensagem em garrafa a indicar a existência do abandonado em Tabor; Fogueira na ilha acendida por estranhos a indicar aos que foram a tabor a situação da ilha) que adensam o mitério da ilha e preparam o desenlace final reservado para o volume 3.
Passaram 2 anos desde que os náufragos do ar chegaram à ilha.

This book was very interesting. I love the way they formed a new society but never stopped missing home. They did the best they could of a rotten situation. I am incredibly intrigued to read more. It was my first attempt at reading Jules Verne and I understand that this is somehow related to The Mysterious Island. It would have been a better read for me if I had truly understood what was going on. It was obvious that this book was in the middle of others.
My only negative point was that I felt that the book wasn’t very relatable. The characters didn’t have much personal connection with me. That might be due to the fact that it is a different time and setting.
My recommendation: Maybe read this if you have read the other Jules Verne novels.

2nd part of the story of the five survivors on the island of Lincoln. The small group gets a new member Ayrton, who was left to survive on his own on a neighbouring island of Tabor, and who's fate is bound with another trilogy of Jules Verne "The children of Captain Grant". The climax of the story is the discovery of the island's benefactor: captain Nemo. His story is told in 2 parts in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
So 7 famous stories comes together in this book, which almost end catastrophic, but gets a good end in the final pages.

You've got to love books written "way back then" to be interested.
The best thing about this book is there are so many descriptions of life on the island and what the castaways did to create a society that you could read it in bits and pieces and not miss much.
The worst thing about the book is it left too many open questions. I'm guessing it's part of a series? It doesn't say so at the end so it's something I'll have to look up on the Internet.
Then again, I don't think I care enough about the characters to bother.

I love the style of Verne's novels and although this one was written with boys in mind, the adventures of the castaways is still fun and exciting to read. I will enjoy the next one just as much, I'm sure.

Clearly an inferior draft of the much superior Mysterious Island. In this one the castaways live in perfect harmony and everything they touch is successful. Such perfect people are not quite so interesting, M. Verne, no?

No se dejen engañar por la calificación, este se ha convertido en una de mis obras favoritas del autor. Después de 10 años ha servido, también, para cerrar trilogias y tener un final a "Los hijos del Capitán Grant" y "20.000 leguas de viaje submarino".
Seis hombres, prisioneros en un sitio durante la Guerra Civil en Estados Unidos, huyen y terminan en una isla desconocida en el pacífico donde fundan una colonia desde la mismísima nada. Es fascinante como desde la tierra van sacando todos los metales y materiales que necesitan, y empiezan desde algo tan básico como arcilla para un horno hasta algo tan complejo como un barco.
Es Verne, así que tiene su buenas dosis de descripción minuciosa y científica, pero combinado con su buena dosis de misterio y aventura, lo logran hacer muy adictivo.

Los componentes de nuestro "Equipo-A" de robinsones han pasado rápidamente de la edad de piedra a la agricultura, la ganadería y, casi, la revolución industrial. Bajo el mando y conocimiento de Ciro "Hannibal" Smith la bautizada como "Isla Lincoln" ya es un hábitat que puede ofrecer manutención y comodidades a sus pobladores. También les sigue acompañando esa misteriosa suerte que les ayudó en el primer tomo de la serie: han encontrado restos de un naufragio, de actividad humana, que les ha proporcionado varias herramientas y armas con las que progresar más rápidamente. Con un bienestar más o menos estable, los cinco miembros (que ahora son siete, al perro "Top" se unió el orangután "Jup") inician la exploración completa de la isla. Gracias también a las nuevas herramientas, y con su conocimiento y habilidad técnica, se predisponen a construir un medio que les permita salir de la isla... idea que en un principio no es bien acogida, pero que cambia con la inesperada llegada de un mensaje de socorro: se ven obligados a intentar ayudar al que parece un "cercano" vecino...
Verne nos propone en este segundo tomo las posibilidades de redención del ser humano. Personas que reconocen lo injusto y execrable de su comportamiento, y por ello, lo justo del castigo que han de cumplir, y como la misericordia es el mejor trato que se puede ofrecer a quien ha pagado y se arrepintió de sus errores. El protagonista de este capítulo de perdón aparece en otra novela de Verne, pero no os preocupéis, no os voy a desvelar nada. Tendréis que verlo por vosotros mismos. También el perdón se contempla como una herramienta en casos desesperados. Cuando la situación aprieta, es mejor contar con la ayuda de todas la manos posibles. Y de esto se deben dar cuenta tanto quien perdona como quien es perdonado. Sobresaliente otra vez para el maestro, que cambia de registro en esta trilogía y, en lugar de recurrir a tecnologías que sobrepasan las posibilidades de un momento histórico concreto, nos recuerda la importancia vital de, por ejemplo, encontrar un grano de trigo.

Esrarlı Ada oldukça didaktik ve bilgiyle dolu bir roman. Zaman zaman gerçekçilikten uzaklaşsa da, bilimsel merakla kurgusal kahramanlığın kesiştiği bir anlatı olarak etkileyici.
Ana kahraman Cyrus neredeyse bir Prometheus gibi işlenmiş. Verne'in pozitivist bakış açısının ve 19. yüzyıl bilim tapınmasının bir ürünü gibi adeta. Cyrus’un "her şeyi bilen adam" oluşu gerçek dışı. Bu gerçeküstülük Verne’in idealleştirilmiş bilimsel ütopyasını temsil ediyor, böyle düşünmek lazım. Gerçek hayatta bir mühendis ne kadar bilgili olursa olsun, sodyum sülfat yapıp barut üretmek, volkanik adada telgraf hattı çekmek gibi şeyleri yalnız başına organize etmesi pek mümkün değil kanımca. Bu anlamda bilimin mucizevi gücünü hikâyeye çok iyi yedirmiş Verne.
Verne ırkçı biri olmamasına rağmen sadık siyahi hizmetkâr figürü bu romanda da karşımıza çıkıyor. Hatta biraz daha süslenerek adada bulunan bir orangutanın bu hizmetkarın kontrolüne verilmesi ve “ehlileştirme” görevinin ona yüklenmesi, açıkça ırksal bir alt metne sahip. Am citit această carte ca urmare a unei provocări dintr-un grup de lectură. Trebuie să recunosc că aveam reticențe să ajung la Jules Verne la 30+. Ați înțeles corect, este prima lectură marca Jules Verne. Și-mi pare rău că nu am avut ocazia să-l descopăr în copilărie. Romanele sale sunt cu siguranță mai captivante pentru vârsta școlară. Biblioteca școlară la care aveam acces în viața de elev, nu mi-a oferit aceasta posibilitate, de aceea recomand părinților să le procure măcar o carte Jules Verne copiilor lor. S-ar putea ca acesta să le trezească dragostea incurabilă pentru lectură.
Ne aflăm în perioada Războiului Civil American pentru Independență. Cinci prizonieri de război reușesc să evadeze din Richmond cu ajutorul unui balon. Grupul este format din inginerul Cyrus Smith, servitorul său, negrul Nab, ziaristul Gedeon Spilett, marinarul Pencroff și tânărul Harbert. Dat fiind furtuna instalată pe coasta americană, ei reușesc să evadeze, însă după cinci zile sunt aruncați pe o insulă nelocuită. Ulterior ei vor numi această insulă - Insula Lincoln în onoarea președintelui Abraham Lincoln.
Văzându-se pe insulă, cei cinci bărbați nu au decât să se adapteze la noul mediu și să încerce să-și ușureze traiul. Toate acestea îmbinând cunoștințele moderne ale inginerului cu îndeletnicirile primitive de meșteșugărit și supraviețuire. Astfel, evadații devin coloniști. Multiple lucruri misterioase se întâmplă de-a lungul șederii lor pe insulă, fapt care îi duce cu gândul la o prezență umană pe-alocuri. Să fie oare așa sau este mâna providenței care aduce pe insulă lucruri trebuincioase?

Nu pot zice că mi-a plăcut enorm cartea și că m-a ținut lipită. Adevarul e că a mers cam greu. Dar cu puțină încăpățânare se ajunge și la final. Probabil îmi plăcea mai mult dacă o citeam acum vreo 20 de ani în urmă.

Jules Verne nin neredeyse tüm romanlarını çocuk klasikleri serisinden ilk ve orta okul sıralarında okumuştum.
Celal Şengör ün katıldığı bir programda Jules Verne den bahsettiğini duyunca acaba tam sürüm nasıl diye merak ettim ve en uzunlarından biri olan bu eseri okumaya karar verdim.
Jules Verne romanlarında çağının ötesindeki hayal dünyası ve bilimin gerçekliği ile çok başarılı bir yazar.
Esrarlı ada romanında da özellikle mühendis Cyrus Smith ve gazeteci aracılığıyla adanın faunası florası ve sorunların çözülmesi için kimya biyoloji mekanik vs.. kullanımıyla gerçek ve pratik bilgiler veriyor.
Sadece onlar için mucize olacak bazı olayların birden bire olması ve yeterince detaylandırılmaması sebebiyle bir yıldız kırıyorum.

Sadece onlar için mucize olacak bazı olayların birden bire olması ve yeterince detaylandırılmaması sebebiyle bir yıldız kırıyorum.

Surprised!
A great book that I was surprised to find so much liking. At first I couldn't determine if this was going to be the inspiration for Planet of the Apes or Gilligan's Island. Neither for the record. Themes include supernatural protection, friendship, redemption of a man's soul, ingenuity, determination, production, survival, companionship (without sexualization), ... and while loath a historical counting of supplies, crops, etc... this was written in a way that these facts didn't bore me. The constant edge of mystery made this an excellent recommendation for young men!

Una historia enfocada en los años 1875, época en la cual inició el mito del triángulo de las bermudas y este es el único punto de entrada de la isla. Este libro es uno de mis favoritos de esta serie de julio Verne, por la gran cantidad de ciencia ficción. Desde que los animales grande se encogieran y los pequeños se volvieran más grandes hasta la forma de llegar a esta isla, buscando emocionar al lector provocando fascinación. Inspirada en relatos de marineros que habían naufragado o que contaban sus aventuras y hallazgos.

Ik vond het 2e deel van het geheimzinnige eiland vele malen beter dan het eerste deel. Er gingen daadwerkelijk soms dingen fout en voelde meer als een verhaal van overwinning dan dat alles gewoon goed komt. Ik was aangenaam verrast met hoe interessant Artyon als karakter was en wat hij toevoegde aan het verhaal.
Ben nu zeker wel geïnteresseerd in Jules Verne en wil graag wat van zijn bekendere boeken lezen.

Segunda parte terminada!
Al igual que la primera parte estuvo cargado de aventuras así como su respectiva dosis de datos científicos. Me gusto tanto que solo me duró cuatro días. En esta segunda parte debo resaltar como los personajes han evolucionado en su convivencia en la isla y como han transformado su entorno para proveerse de lo necesario y sobrevivir.
Saber como termina esta historia se ha vuelto una necesidad.

Recuerdo este libro en mi adolescencia como una especie de Robinson Crusoe pero con un grupo de soldados de la guerra de secesión de los Estados Unidos, que llegan en un globo aerostático después de una tormenta a una isla y que viven una serie de aventuras en la que ocurren cosas rarísimas; con un final inesperado...

Es impresionante lo detallado que está este libro en cuanto a conocimientos de química, biología y geografía; relacionados a todo lo que hacían los colonos para sobrevivir en la isla.
Me gusta cómo el compañerismo es parte de la historia, así como el crecimiento de cada uno de los personajes. Me gustó también cómo todo esto se mezcló con el misterio de la isla.

Buena historia, solo en algunos momentos, casi toda la parte inicial es casi súper poderosos un personaje al grado de hacerlo poco creíble, pero todo lo demás y los personajes que se agregan la hacen entretenida

Seems this instalment of the story is only 159 pages long, so I have reached its end... I like some parts but I find that I don't like the tone of this story overall, so it is not a 3... just a 2.5 star

En general le gusta mucho la literatura de Verne y más estás historias algo fantásticas pero dentro de algo posible por así decir, y lo que le encanto descubrir o al menos a mi parecer fue ver en Ciro Smith a Senku Ishigami de Dr. Stone
