Ollie Wit #2

Walking in the Dark

Rate this book
Some people find power in the light. Others are meant to walk in the dark.

Ollie Wit left it all behind: a new home, friends who saw her as something more than a fragile shadow walker and a budding relationship with Kane. She did it all in an effort to shield Asher, who should’ve never been able to escape the Shadowlands.

Now her money is gone, her hopes of saving other shadow walkers has slipped through her fingers, and Kane won’t speak to her. She’s been abducted by leprechauns, who think she has committed an unspeakable crime. The vampires want her dead and there’s a crawler blowing up End of the Rainbows. Kane might not want to work with her, but he’s going to have to because all hell is breaking loose in Boston.

Loved this just as much as the first. Didn't suffer from middle book syndrome at all, which was super nice and super unexpected. Can't wait to see how book three does.

I felt like there were some major holes in this novel, things that had no explanation, and/or things that were not quite resolved in the end.

Sadly, Ollie Wit continues down the road of ineptitude, making the exact wrong decisions. There's a lack of character development here. The reader never gets a good explanation as to why Ollie buys an $8M BUILDING! Sure, it's in furtherance of her desire "to save Shadow Walkers" but that doesn't really spell out how this massive purchase is going to do that. I mean, buy an apartment or commercial building with tenants already in it to help pay the taxes. I understand that this is more money than any typical young adult has probably ever seen, but to jump from "how am I going to pay rent in my low-income apartment building without a job" to "let's buy a building"?! There needed to be a better explanation for her motivations and plan. It still doesn't make sense to me.

Also, she's still new to this world of magic, and to the reader's knowledge, she's made absolutely NO effort to learn anything. So that doesn't make sense either. What does she do with herself all day? She left Kane without a word three months ago, and yet the reader has no idea about her daily life. We're just thrust back into her world without any information. There's also no resolution regarding the missing money. She loses $1M, and.... End of topic. WHAT?! NO! There needs to be an answer to that! Did Asher take it? Did hackers steal it? Did Kane somehow gain access to the account? Did the bank embezzle it? Come on!

The novel proceeds just like this until the end, at which time my predictions are proven true. I'm always disappointed when I can guess "whodunnit" so easily. And with Asher, there's still no real resolution. I won't give any spoilers, but let's just say his issues are wrapped up so neatly and with a single sentence, it's like he was a single blip on the radar, not the complex thing he was.

There is some progress with the Kane-Ollie relationship, some revelations, but its more like a gentle flowing stream than a flash flood in its excitement. I felt disappointed, but I'll still read the next novel.

My rating is closer to a 3.5 but I'm rounding down a little because this installment is not quite worth a 4.

Ollie has left the Underground and she's taken Asher, who is suddenly able to manifest in this world with her. Four months have passed and she's burned through the millions of dollars she from Kane at some point (it wasn't specified). Now she's desperate for an anchor to take her to the Shadow World because she figures she could get spells for people and make enough money to keep the lights on while she helps Asher acclimate to the human world. Ollie feels like she owes him because he helped her keep the crawlers at a distant, when she was was on the brink of insanity, and other times she was in danger in the Shadow World.

After exhausting all her choices, she ends up going back to Kane who is super pissed that Ollie left and with another man no less. When he finds out about Asher he warns Ollie that Asher is dangerous but Ollie doesn't believe him at least until very potent magical items start going missing and explosions begin occuring again. It then becomes a race to find the evil and extinguish it and coming to terms with the fact that some people are not in Ollie's best interest.

I devoured this mainly because I wanted to see how Ollie and Kane's relationship would develop. They both had instances of jealousy throughout and having fights about anything and everything because they didn't want to admit that they liked one another. I felt like Kane made it obvious but Ollie chose to be in denial as much as she could anyway. Some of it was very childish but I ate it right up. I got to the point that I didn't even care about the main plot driver because I was determined to see what would happen with these two.

There are a lot of plot holes. For example, in the beginning it's mentioned that Ollie had a million dollars stolen from her but then it's never brought up again. And her loyalty to Asher was questionable because in the last book she was never quick to trust anyone at any time. Kane has saved her life plenty and she's still wary of him but with Asher it was blind loyalty. Things like that made me scratch my head but my investment into Kane and Ollie would not be deterred. I'm off to the finale where I hope this tension finally explodes.

I finished book 1 at 3am, and the same day I finished this book at 8:30pm. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about how much I enjoyed this book and series then you dunno me and I'm gunna have to expand.

Alright. We pick up 3 months later and apparently Ollie has blown through 10 million dollars. Seriously....how the fuck do you blow through so much money? Well apparently someone kept bidding up her offers driving up the price. Gee, I wonder who that could be.

Anyways now Ollie is desperate and Asher is living with her and sorta driving her nights. Bright side though is there aren't as many crawlers around. She decides to go back to The Underground to see if Kane is willing to help her. Instead she finds him angry with her (among other things) and he basically turns his back on her. But then he shows up again and they team up again to help with an even bigger problem. Items from every supernatural is missing.

And all fingers point to Ollie, naturally.

She's the only one who can shadow walk so it has to be her. But she has no idea what they are asking for and thus she agrees to be under Kane's protection so the other supernaturals won't harm her. Together they will try to figure out what in the hell is going on, but all signs are pointing to Asher being the cause. Something Kane doesn't know about at least not right away.

This book drives Kane's and Ollie's will they won't they relationship forward immensely. We start to realize that perhaps Ollie does have feelings for him, more than she thought.

I just loved this book, I devoured it. It was spectacular.

Not to mention slow burn romance. Book 2 and I think they are gunna be a thing but I don' t know.

I did find it interesting when Kane left to do something and almost everyone fell under Ollie and followed her directions. This surprised me, why would they defer to her? She's so new, so there has to be a reason for it. Is she Kane's mate?

I also feel like there is an undercurrent of things we aren't getting either. Like we still don't know what Kane is, but we also get side comments that Ollie knows nothing about and kinda shrugs off, but that the reader knows is important.

For a while there I thought that some how Kane was both Asher and Kane, but I don't think that's possible based on what all happened. I originally thought this because of Ahser being in the shadow lands and Kane being here but *shrugs* I still have no idea exactly what is going on beyond the story at hand. So I wish I could know what is being said below the surface. I have a feeling some of things things said have a double meaning.

Still I really really enjoyed this book and totally need book 3 at the very least up even if it's untitled so I can add it to my TBR.

GIMME!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing... WoW. Now we have wait.....
Great to see more interaction between Kane and Ollie in this new installment. I was really looking forward to read this one.

Thrilling writing from Author Donna Augustine. You can feel the tention through the pages. You know Ollie is missing something in the actions why Kane does things... Great way how she (Donna) can tell so much without to write down the actual words.

I hope for the next installment just as much fun, lots of tention and of course romance and hot KANE :) i cant wait to read some hot scenes between Ollie and Kane. And not just the next morning... But for that we just have to wait... And see :)

The beginning was weird. Everything seemed out of sync with the last book. It started 3 months later. Ollie ran away from everyone without a word to protect Asher. It didn't make sense that she'd throw her life away for him. He was a creepy monster guy from the shadow realm with unknown motives. Somehow in those 3 months she blew threw 10 million dollars. It was beyond ridiculous.

Ollie's pattern of stupid decision making got worse as the book went on. One dumb thing after another was done to antagonize Kane, not that she would even admit to herself that's why she was doing the things she did. Her blind trust in Asher was bizarre. Supposedly she did it out of loyalty, but what about her loyalty to Kane? He did far more for her than Asher did.

This felt more like PNR than UF. Without all of the relationship drama, there wasn't much of a story. The person behind the missing items was so easy to figure out. It was the most obvious choice. All of the side characters were insignificant. There was no character development for them at all. The only thing they did was provide random commentary that didn't really matter one way or the other in the grand scheme of things. I'll probably read the next one because it's the last one and these are quick easy reads.

Very fun, I actually laughed out loud at some parts, but definitely a lot of questions that need answers. I’m hoping the next one finally gives us some answers. (Hi I’m here after reading the next one & it doesn’t give you any answers. I’m pissed. I liked this serious so far, but after that finale I would not recommend.)

The opening of this book was confusing. With that ending of the previous book … I would’ve told Kane because how could you hide that? I’d freaked a bit and like I mentioned in my review for the first book the whole miscommunication/closed lips thing drove me nuts. Can’t the author pick another way to cause some conflict in the story? Maybe I’m alone in thinking that since the reviews I did read raved about the first book.
The opening of this book … seriously how can she blow threw 10 million? Is it her age group and not having the knowledge on how to manage money or something? I first am blown away at her cause she decided to take on, since far as I know picking out shadow walkers isn’t an easy thing. And why in the world did she start so big? Why did she let this person who she barely knew, met in a shadow/scary realm free reign with a credit card in the first place?
I read through the third book and another before getting back to this so I failed to get to this when it was fresh. However I remember wondering that if she cared about shadow walkers … how come no more ever showed up after Penelope?? If she was bent on learning magic and kept going on about how she was powerful or whatever … how come we didn’t see her learning about what she did have the ability to learn? The only others we meet is a crazy one, who is a former one jonezing to get more magic, and one who is as new as her that ends up dying during her first walk.
Okay, the ending … that went by too quickly. I think I just can’t process the first person, present PoV with books or something. A lot of the time it just seems like blah, blah, blah and little to no actual stuff going on.
I will say though that Butch hit it on the head when he mentioned how Kane and Ollie fight about everything but what they’re actually needing to talk about. That is just one of the things I don’t get. When I read the reviews written for these books I’m left wondering wtf did I miss because I didn’t see most of what people are going on about when it comes to character development, relationships, and namely the sexual tension between her and Kane. Didn’t see it…. Guess I am just getting old or something.
If the series wasn’t on KU, it wasn’t so easy to get the next in series, and I weren’t so lazy I don’t think I would’ve finished the series so far.

This book begins with Ollie going back to the man she walked away from three months ago. She needs money badly, and she had no idea that he was making her life more difficult, until he makes it obviously. Not only that, but it seems he has also moved on from her. But not everything is as it seems, and as Ollie's life is in danger things get more and more complicated.

This book was really good. It had a lot of drama, Ollie learning something new, and getting more powerful, and it had her also learning that maybe friends aren't always what they seem.

I can't wait for more in this series, and I love the hero and heroine together, they are great!

I am loving this writer. And to be honest, I am just not giving this book a 5 stars because the heroine made many many many messed up mistakes. I wanted to shake her sometimes. But the story is goooood. I am gonna try her other series.

Some things here were left unresolved, and I am truly hoping that every dot will be connected by the last book. Like who the spell from the last book was for, for example...

Confession time: I read this in one sitting and now I'm in a book hangover.

This book picks up a couples months after the events of the first book. Ollie has spent all of her money- yes several millions- and is back at Kane's mercy asking him for employment. Kane being well Kane turns her down. Ollie has been living with Asher, who is still unsure how he is in this world. She's trying to keep an eye on Asher and introduce him to this new life. After a chain of events and two dislocated arms, Kane rescues Ollie and they start working together to find some important missing items.

I LOVED this book- perhaps more than the first. The first book focused on the world building and Ollie's angst over her family. This book has a bunch of character development. Less angst with Ollie- except at the beginning, she did go a little boo hooey on us. Ollie wants to return to spell selling and Zee is her go to gargoyle. I love every time Zee is on the page. Just thinking of the gargoyles sends me into fits of laughter.

Kane discovers Ollie's secret- Asher. Now Ollie should have known she can't keep secrets from Kane. He will always find them out. Asher is being kept in custody under watch and Ollie feels obligated to protect Asher. He saved her sanity and protected her in the Shadowlands.

While I'm on the subject of Asher, who would have thought he'd be a fan of Grey's Anatomy and the food network? He binge watches tv series and eats pizza. Welcome to the human world Asher, you are now living like the rest of us. Even though Ollie trusts Asher, Kane isn't about to warm up to him. Kane is determined to find out how Asher broke free of the Shadowlands.

The tension between Ollie and Kane was a 5 out of 5 for me. They go head to head in this book and Kane lets Ollie know his intensions.

"What are you doing?"
"Something I've been thinking of doing for too long."

I seriously smiled like a mad woman at this scene. So perfect.

I'm ready for the next book to see where their relationship goes and what being shadow kissed means for Ollie's life now.

Spoilers

The second book was really good. I'm just such a fan of this author and her writing. The beginning of this book had me all frustrated and getting upset that our MCs were fighting and at how stupid I felt she was for doing so many things. After a few chapters it all started making sense and soon enough we got back into the teasing territory I adored from the first book. Ollie left because she felt like she had to protect Asher but she did it without a word and it caused a lot of anger on Kane's part. I thought I was going to love Asher as a character at the end of the first book but dang he ended up being so needy that I was frustrated on her behalf! The main arc is that someone or something is blowing up stores of magic. During this time everything that Ollie and Kane did, as mentioned in the beginning, was explained.
This book caused a flurry of emotions in me; I was frustrated, angry, curious, and best of all laughing during the whole of it.
It is not a romance in the strict sense which is something I love. We do have two characters who have this awesome connection and clearly they've become a couple even if they haven't quite accepted it. There isn't any lovey dovey carp which I can't stand but there also isn't any sex (although there was a steamy moment I was not for until it got cut off!). I think there might have been like 2 cuss words. Overall A!

Loved it!!!

Donna Augustine writes another awesome paranormal romance. I love this series, the lead character Ollie is strong, but still insecure, with a lot of snark and Cane is just dreamy. I was glued to my Kindle app all day and finished this in less than a day. Can’t wait to read more!!

I reeeeeeally like this world and these characters. Ollie is flawed but not in an annoying way. The supporting characters are all interesting and believable and support Ollie coming into her own. Kane is obsession worthy. My only gripe is both books have felt cut short, like they needed about five more chapters to feel complete. The next is an auto-buy for me regardless.

2 stars

A good second installment. I have it two stars because of Ollie. She is one of those characters that constantly makes dumb decisions she has to be rescued from. She talks a big game but can't out money where her mouth is. She always loses the argument to her romantic interest, which is annoying because she shouldn't be so stupid that she loses them all. This story has a heavy slant towards portraying males positively and females negatively. I hope this changes, because I don't think women are or should be weak, flighty, petty, and incapable.

Good but urgh!

This was a good one, but come on. Still no sex? She admits to having had several one night stands, so this extensive delay for no discernable reason just makes no sense. I could buy it if she were a virgin.

This is my third series by this author and they all suffer from the exact same weaknesses. This one also had had Ollie having way too many tstl moments. I wish the author would stop dragging the relationship out soooo long or just list them as YA!

This ended much better than it started. I was beginning to think that the "don't communicate unto stupidity" trope was going to kill this series for me, but the characters started coming around toward the end and the movement in the relationship was satisfying.

The mystery wasn't terribly convoluted but it was an enjoyable read never the less. I will read the next when it comes out.

I think the only reason I ever want to read the next book is because of Kane. Ollie just irritates me so much and there is so much potential. I had higher hopes for this book and it just didn’t happen. I think i am done.

Overall, I think I like this series, but it definitely needs some work. Ollie seems to have a good heart, but she is definitely immature and acts like a brat sometimes. But when we get into the second book in a series, I expect more world building, and we didn't get that here. We didn't even get any character development. The characters are obviously growing closer the more time they spend with each other, but they aren't actually changing/improving. I feel like the point of a series should be to expand on the world and characters, not give us the same thing just with a different conflict.

The issue with this series is how superficial the world building is. There is no critical thinking. No one seems to actually understand what the shadowlands or crawlers are, what their motivations are, if they are truly monsters or distinct individuals capable of good and evil just like humans, etc. Ollie never asks the right questions to really understand the evil plots going on around her. She really only knows enough to survive without actually understanding the intricacies of her new world. It made this frustrating to read because there is so much more to learn and we have an MC that doesn't care. Plus, Kane and the other side characters really aren't great people. The terrible things they were doing before book 1 were never addressed, there was never redemption, Ollie just accepted them. And I do agree that they are charming and easy to like when they're getting along, but it's so weird to me that Ollie never even thinks about the past or what awful things they were doing to the other shadow walkers. Kane is still an ass, and while I don't like him, I can understand that love isn't rational and she could still fall for him, but it would be a much better story if she actually tried to know and understand him instead of just accepting his terrible qualities.

Walking in the Dark
Donna Augustine

Augustine’s second installment in her Ollie Wit series is Urban Fantasy noir at its best. With a mix of austere and dark humor she continues her tale showing off her fantastical alternate yet recognizable world filled with fascinating characters good, bad and ugly. The tension between Ollie and Kane really ramp up in book two and readers get to see a more vulnerable side to our star. Book two picks up right where book one left off so this isn’t a series you can skip around with.
SUMMARY:
Three months ago Ollie Wit left the Underground without a word to her partner/protector/nemesis Kane. Leaving was the hardest thing she’s done since losing her family but she had no choice when Asher, an entity she befriended follows her back from the Shadowlands and she feels responsible for him. Now broke she needs to keep herself and Asher off the streets and knows that means going back to the Underground and begging Kane for her Shadow Walking job back. She knows if he decides to let her work with him again there’ll be a price to pay. She just hopes she can afford it.

Walking in the dark book 2 Ollie Wit series by Donna Augustine

I absolutely love this series and devoured this book in one sitting, trying to ease up so I could savor it, but lost that battle.

I love Ollie and Kane and the characters in this book, it made me laugh in places and sad in other and the heat between Ollie and Kane was hotter than the sun!

In this book, Ollie tries to help and protect Asher and figure out how and why he crossed over from the shadowlands and in order to do this she chose the hardest option which was to walk out on Kane.

Broke and desperate, Ollie goes back to Kane to get work, though a hurt and betrayed Kane unleashes his full force on Ollie, though not without keeping her on a mental leash.

As precious things start to go missing from the Vampires, the leprechaun's, and the werewolves, Ollie is the centre of attention and is in danger, Kane trying to protect her and find out whats going is also putting himself in danger!

This book and the series is very addictive and I cannot wait until the next installment comes out!

This is one of those series where you have to discipline yourself to not stay up all night to find out what happens. I love Augustine's characters, but especially her main female. Snarky, funny, independent (to a fault) Olivia Wit is similar to The Wilds main character. That series was a bit more complicated but both are similar in style. Ollie can see monsters around her that no one else can. It has rendered her out of a job and sinking into despair after her family dies in an explosion and fire that she survives. Only later does she find out she was the cause. Now she has learned what she is (a Shadow Walker) and finds a new home with other odd creatures. Kane is the leader and he helps Ollie know what she is. I found myself wanting to mark the funny comments so I could find them again (didn't). In this book, Ollie and Kane's relationship develops past intense dislike to, well intense like. A creature has somehow entered their world from the shadowlands and he is somewhat childlike, so Ollie feels responsible for him. Lots of trouble here.

Got about half way through the book but couldn’t make myself finish reading on. This doesn‘t happen often but there were some issues too big for me to simply overlook:

- Even in book 2 you don‘t really get to now any of the characters. Worst of all Olli. What does she do all day long except wait and (in the beginning of the book) talk to Asher? What does she like/ dislike?

- Olli is also so very naive and such a push-over.
How did she manage to spend 10 million dollar in a few months? And when she is hard up for cash, why can’t she sell the building worth a few million???

- You also never really get explanations for a lot of things that occur. Either Olli asks for an explanation, is denied one and doesn’t try again on most cases or Olli simply doesn’t even wonder.

But for me it boiled down to simply feeling no real connection to any characters and hating so many of Olli‘s decisions and her reasoning behind them that I didn’t bother finishing the book.

Love this series so far

But it also drives me crazy. We still have no answers to questions that started in the first book. Big questions. (Who/what is MC male? Etc) Usually I love the angst and suspense, but by now its almost like the author is dragging this out too long. It worries me cuz if the answers aren't awesome by the time they are answered, ill throw my kindle out of a moving vehicle. Too much time is invested in this series not to be upset if it flops. There is only one book left (so far..?) and if these main questions aren't answered by then I doubt ill recommend this series. The story is supposed to evolve and have new problems but it kinda feels like all she is doing is running around like a chicken with their head cut off only solving minor immediate problems and further digging herself into a grave with all the "favors" she'll owe later. We'll see

Ollie is a great character

Book 2 was great, intrigue, mystery. Deeper world building. I'd hoped to see her save a shadow Walker. Maybe for book 3. Ashers character confused me, he seemed so different in book 1. Kane is utterly fascinating. We are all dying to know who/what he is. It must be pretty bad. Ollie is likable in a why does she always make such bad decisions kind of way. Some of her ineptitude I excuse by saying she never had a chance to be normal or think, she spent all her time surviving. But she needs to show a little growth. I also felt like the book ended kind of abruptly without good explanations for what happened. We still have questions, I hope to see answers and more of their growing romance.
