The first book in Michelle McLean’s The MacGregor Lairds series; How to Lose a Highlander, was a joy to read from start to finish.
I was grabbed from the first chapter of this story and pretty much read Malcolm and Sorcha’s story in one sitting. There were laughs, as few tears and pretty much every emotion in between for this pairing, from the two weeks they spend on the road together travelling back to Scotland to Sorcha then integrating with the rest of the Glenlyon residents. Especially after basically being forced to marry Malcolm by King Charles II, in an attempt to reduce the ill-will and blood shed between the Campbell and MacGregor clans.
"I have no intention of making your life convenient…
"Nay worries, my wife. Convenient ye are not."
Sorcha isn’t your usual simpering, coquettish lady of the court, and she gives as much as she takes in the way of verbal sparring with the rough and ready Laird of Glenlyon, but the sexual tension and attraction that simmers between them right from their first meeting gives everything a sensual undertone, and the escapades they get up to in the telling of the story deepens the bond forming between them.
"Someday you’ll have to explain to me how trying to drive you away won your love."
I cannot recommend this book highly enough, I don’t read a huge amount of Historical Fiction, but Michelle has added herself to my auto-read list with the first book in this series, I hope that there are many more books to come, and we don’t have to wait too long, as I cannot wait to read more from these characters.
ARC generously provided via Netgalley, and it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review.
The story was good and I did read it quick. It didn't bog down, but their plotting against each other got a tad dumb.
I like that he was for the most part pretty nice to her and really didn't get mean unless she was over the top. She was a definite pain and I would have choked the life out of her. I do have to give it to her though she accepted her plight and did make the best of it. The underlying plot though got pushed under the rug and we skipped over what happened when her father got there. We just went straight to epilogue. Didn't like that.
This is rated pretty much PG-13. So if you are looking for some hot highlander loving, it is not here.

Book Review For: How to Lose a Highlander by Michelle McLean 'How to Lose a Highlander' by Michelle McLean is book One in "The MacGregor Lairds" series. Sorcha and Malcolm first meet at a masquerade ball where Sorcha father is trying to get the King's attention with the feud that has been going on with the Campbell's and the MacGregor's. Malcolm to is at the ball to talk to the King also about the feud. When Sorcha and Malcolm first meet under their disguises they find they are both attracted to the other. King Charles settles the matter of the feud by Marrying Sorcha and Malcolm. Both now are very upset by this and fight their attraction that they started when they didn't know the other. So they both go into trying to get out of this marriage. I so loved how they bantered between each other, it made for a lot of funny spots. I could not put this book down! I have to have more books by Ms. McLean!"My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."https://www.amazon.com/gp/profile/A2H...http://sissymaereads.blogspot.com/https://romancebookreviewforyou.wordp...https://www.tumblr.com/blog/romancebo...
What a wonderful, fun read this was. I’ve gotten away from historical romances somewhat but the blurb on this one just called to me and I’m so glad I responded.
Sorcha and Malcolm’s clans have been waging attacks against each other for quite a while now. They are definitely each other’s enemy. When the king demands the clan unite by joining them in marriage neither one of them wants to accept the decree. What follows is a tale of two people who try to chase the other off by their unfavorable behavior. I found this to be filled with humor at their actions and quite entertaining.
I have not read anything by this author before but I will most definitely be looking for more from her. I suspect some of the characters from this book will be receiving their own stories soon. If so, I can’t wait!

4.5 Stars It's too funny, Sorcha and Malcolm are both quite entertaining, and their banters made me laugh so much. They're obviously attracted to each other but they simply cannot forget animosity between their clans. So, even though King himself decreed their wedding, they must find a way out of this mess. They can't stay married for long. And hence the war began.... Sorcha tried her best to be the worst wife possible, she acts like a shrew, and drives Malcolm crazy. Malcolm on the other hand tries his best to ignore her, their is no way he will be the one to cry off their union. Then his clan will suffer King's disfavour. He will have to wait. He is sure that his wife won't be able to stay with him for long and soon all his problems will be resolved... But soon they are going to find out that things aren't always what they seem. May be then they will give their marriage a chance... who knows it may end in a happily ever after.
Generations of clan raids, political intrigue, and a marriage ordered by the king...what could possibly go right??
The story is one that we have all read before: feuding clans are brought together by a forced marriage that is supposed to bring peace. However, this isn't the typical telling of the story. He doesn't sleep around with all the women except his wife, and she isn't naturally a virginal churlish shrew in the face of her new life. Malcolm and Sorcha are both intelligent, fiery, and real...you can imagine yourself easily being friends with both of them. Surrounding the budding romance the story explores the ideas of loyalty, friendship, home, and family. All of this is woven together in a well-written, thoroughly enjoyable read.
Malcolm and Sorcha are the central characters in the story. You wonder if the attraction of their initial chance encounter will survive the uniting of their feuding clans that had been forced upon them by the king. Malcolm has proven himself a warrior as he has led his clan, protecting them as much as possible against Sorcha's clan. But he is different from the typical "warrior" characters...his fierce strength and honor isn't only seen in battle. He is also a caregiver to his people and keeps his word with his new wife, despite her best efforts to drive him mad. And Sorcha is a spit-fire, not a mewling whiny weakling as you would expect in this type of story. She is smart, sassy, and not wanting this marriage any more than her new husband. But once she arrives at her new "home" you see a different side to her. She is resourceful, kind, and not one to stand idly by the wayside. Both Malcolm and Sorcha are characters that you can admire.
There are also distinct differences in the two locations that the story takes place. At court you get the impression of many people being there for the show, each out for their own gain. Everything is superficial and it is not a place where close relationships are valued beyond what a person can get out of it. In contrast, the keep at Glenlyon is warm and inviting. Even the words used to describe it are earthy and bring to mind life, growth, and comfort. The people there are wholly different from the attitudes that abound at court. You can truly understand how that atmosphere fosters the new romance between Malcolm and Sorcha.
I don't want to spoil anything so I won't give you a synopsis and key plot details...but it's definitely worth the read. You will shake your head at their individual scheming to get the marriage annulled and laugh out loud at the witty banter between the two. So grab a drink and get comfortable because you won't want to put it down until you find out how it ends!
This one was an easy read. Light on sexy-times, but still fun. I love Highlander books, so you know I was ready for this one.
The Story- The Campbells and the MacGregors have hated each other for a long time. Both happen to be visiting the King to ask him to help with the feud, and his solution is for the Campbell daughter to marry the MacGregor laird. Of course it is. Even though these two had a meet-cute at the ball the night before in which they could barely keep their hands off each other, now that they know who the other is, they hate each other and want to drive the other to annul the marriage. Which leads to a fairly quick and predictable plot about how they eventually come together.
My Thoughts- I liked the hero better than the heroine, but neither character was super developed. Luckily, the plot clicked right along and I was never bored even though I knew where this story was headed. I wish there had been more sexual tension because there was so much that could have been built upon from the initial meeting. That sort of thing doesn't just disappear overnight, and I think the love/hate would have been more interesting. When the sexy times did come, I felt like they were slightly brief considering how long we had to wait to get there.
Bottom Line- If you like Highlander books, this one will not disappoint. It is a fun, quick romp that will keep your interest. 3 1/2 stars
A unique take on the movie How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days, this lighthearted romance will entertain and engage readers with all the ways Sorcha and Malcolm try to have their marriage annulled without causing a war. It's funny and definitely sexy. It's a short, witty and engaging story that is a definite page turner.
Malcolm has had enough of the reckless Campbell’s stealing his property and terrifying his tenants. Adamant that the attacks are not provoked by him or his people, he goes to a masquerade ball to speak with the King. Sorcha has had more than her share of admirers, but she would not settle for just anyone. And she wouldn’t dream of marrying a McGregor, whose been their rival clam since her birth. When the two encounter each other without knowing each other’s identity, things get even more interesting.
In order to settle the feud, the king demands them to wed. Neither wants to lose their head (literally) by refusing, so they each – separately- come up with a plan. To get the other one to request annulment, blaming the spouse for the dissolution of the marriage.
I understood Sorcha’s plan and ambition to carry it out; but the fact is, after a while she came across as just plain childish. She worked my nerves as much as she did Malcolm’s, to the point that I almost closed the book. However, I’m glad I didn’t. One paragraph reminded me of why I initially liked her, and my tolerance level increased.
I love me a Scot, and Malcolm is no exception. His jovial, but alpha personality had me hooked. He was a saint when it came to dealing with Sorcha, but he didn’t let her run all over him. Once they reached his home, things improved greatly. The staff had my attention, and Sorcha gained even more favor. I enjoyed the comradery between Malcolm and John. There’s a bit of suspense. I was sure at had some things figured out; and when I realized all wasn’t what it seemed, I couldn’t help but to smile. I love me some twists. Kudos to McLean.
Despite my temporary eye-rolling-ready-to-put-the-book-down moment, I really enjoyed this story. I recommend it.

Taming of the Shrew
Malcolm MacGregor has petitioned the king to put an end to the burning and plundering of his villages from his rival and feuding clan Campbell. The eve before his audience with the king he meets the most intriguing vixen that has him rethinking about taking a wife such was the spell she'd cast upon him. That being said his meeting with the king didn't go as planned, instead the king saddled him with a wife......none other than the Campbell lass!
Sorcha Campbell is at court to help persuade the king towards her father's petition, to rid them of the ever thieving clan MacGregor. What she gets instead is marriage to the feared laird of the MacGregor's! But how to go against what the King has decreed? There is no way out for her but to make her new husband as miserable as possible maybe then he'd be the one to bring disfavour and shame to his clan. Only if his kisses didn't make her melt and leave her senseless.
What an entertaining story, this was a cross between Taming of the Shrew and War of the Roses. I loved it, Malcolm and Sorcha both strong and stubborn characters that really were the perfect match for each other. Each thinking the worst of each other but yet there's the undeniable attraction and that works in their favour. Sorcha takes control of the keep making changes and improvements, visiting the tenants and seeing to their every need has Malcolm questioning his feelings for her. Just when it looks like their marriage has a chance betrayal will come and they'll both question their loyalty to each other.
Michelle McLean has a winner in this enjoyable witty romance, a swoon worthy highlander a stubborn and feisty heroine and of course a villain in their midst. Highly recommend!
I received a complementary copy from the author for my honest opinion.
Jesus, Sorcha and Malcolm's relationship is quite intertaining, “well, I didna know ye were trying to kill me. If ye’d warned me that you had laced the wine with something, I’d ha’ listened better.” Even of not intentional Sorcha drives her man batty, "...only instead of hopping to the ground , she slid off in a boneless heap and landed square on her bum in the dirt. Which set off the tears again. Malcolm rubbed his hand over his eyes. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, save me from this woman,” he muttered." Malcolm is always giving his wife invitations to join him, “verra much.” His voice was deep and husky and made her toes curl in her boots. “Any time ye want to join me in the bath, or anywhere else in this chamber, ye are more than welcome.” I loved this book, I loved the arguments Sorcha and Malcolm would have.
This one was a fun read! It was my first Highlander romance, and it definitely won't be my last. I will say that I was expecting way more spice based off the cover, but this one was still cute.
I really enjoyed the cultural elements in this one. It was so fun to read about all the festivals and traditions, especially because they were real occurrences. They made our main romance even more fun than it would've been.
As for the main romance, it was sweet. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, so of course I enjoyed the enemity and banter. Their gradual connection was cute, and had my attention caught.
I'm super tired right now, so I'm done with this review, but I'd recommend this one! It's not super smutty, but it is a sweet historical romance.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was book one in a new series by Michelle McLean. I loved this. It was a fun romantic tale and I just couldn't put it down. The only thing that gave me pause was the ending. We spend the whole book with many raids occurring and the only explaination is an half brother that we never knew about? Yeah, I wanted more from that but the romance was well done.
Plot: 3/5 Characterisation: 4/5 Prose: 4/5 How much I enjoyed it: 3/5
Maybe I got my hopes up too high. Being billed as Taming of the Shrew meets How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, I was expecting a more humorous story. But the execution of the plot was surprisingly average.
This book was okay. It wasn't the most fantastic thing I've ever read but it's a very simple, sweet story that I thought was cute and made me laugh more than a handful of times so I was not disappointed. It was a fun and easy read albeit not the most intellectually stimulating!

It is filled with all the elements Scottish historical romance readers love. This novel will leave you breathless, with a storyline that has so many twists and turns - not knowing what could happen could possibly happen next.
“How To Lose A Highlander” by Michelle McLean is absolutely brilliant! I can’t recommend this book enough! I can hardly wait for the next book in “The MacGregor Lairds” series!

With a B.S. in History, M.A. in English, a sense of humor by a woman who loves a happy ever after, Author Michelle McLean pens an entertaining tale.
Taking a feud of long-standing between the Campbells and the MacGregors, she weaves a tale which will keep you laughing, if for nothing more than the heated banter between Sorcha Campbell and Malcolm MacGregor.
King Charles II is tired of this feud. He wants it to end, therefore commands this marriage to take place. Malcolm doesn’t want to displease the king, for he is a friend and he’s been good with the MacGregor clan. He cares not to have the king’s wrath and lose his standing. However, it isn’t below him to think of ways to get this marriage annulled, particularly since his new wife makes him wish he didn’t have ears. His plan is to have her proclaimed insane. He feels a bit guilty about it, but values his freedom above all.
As Malcolm wants his freedom, so does Sorcha Campbell. To be wedded to the enemy? Never!! She and her maid, Berta, work up a scheme which backfires a wee bit. Well, maybe a lot! Her plan is to ask for an annulment on the grounds of her new husband unable to consummate the union.
When I wasn’t laughing, I was rolling my eyes--scenes very cleverly written. These two totally deserve each other! Malcolm just wants to go back to the Highlands – alone. But it doesn’t work out that way. Sorcha’s duplicity very nearly gets herself imprisoned. Malcolm saves Sorcha from herself thereby sealing his fate -- at least for the near future.
Malcolm is honorable to the end, although it may just kill him. Sorcha has a change of heart. Maybe she could live with Malcolm, but her maid has a poor influence on her, making her doubt Malcolm’s intentions. Malcolm has little faith in his new bride and easily thinks the worst of her. Can these two ever move forward, already? Outside forces create more havoc. This adds up to one fast-paced battle between Sorcha and Malcolm. Eventually, both hearts are ensnared, giving the reader a most satisfying happy ever after.

Review:
Forced marriages never start out well...
This holds true for Sorcha and Malcolm. They meet not knowing who the other is at a masquerade ball and the attraction is quickly acted upon by each. That attraction is put to the test when forced to marry by King Charles to stop feuding between rival clans, theirs is not an easy start to marriage. Both try to manipulate the other into getting an annulment to the marriage with some fun and disastrous effects. Once they reach Malcolm's castle they both come to respect the other and the distrust and dislike starts to crumble. That is until trouble comes calling.
I loved this fun story! Both characters made me laugh and love them. I know it is a romance and we are almost always guaranteed a HEA, but I was still rooting for them because they were so perfect for each other. The book was engaging and had a little bit of action, romance, history, drama and sexiness to appeal to all. I have read this Author before, but it was a 1920's historical romance. I think she did an excellent job of switching time periods, everything made sense for the place and time of this book. This is the first in a new series, so I am very excited to see what comes next.

I love a good Highlander romance story. Guys in kilts are my weakness. You've seen the pics, you get what I'm talking about ;) So, when I saw this up for review I knew I had to grab it.
The Campbell and MacGregor clans have been enemies for centuries and now that the MacGregors are back in favor with the King, he's tired of the Campbells raiding their lands. Malcolm MacGregor, Laird of Glenlyon, goes to King Charles to have him put a stop to it. But the Laird of the Campbells is there too to try to do the same thing. King Charles orders Malcolm to marry Sorcha Campbell, figuring their marriage would put a stop to the feud. However, neither Malcolm nor Sorcha are happy about having to marry the other and vow to make each others lives as miserable as possible in an effort to put an end to the marriage.
Thankfully Sorcha was really a kind-hearted caring heroine or I wouldn't have liked her at all LOL She was attracted to Malcolm but was a raving witch in hopes that he'd leave her. Then when he ignored her or left her at the keep to tend to his tenants, she was mad that he was doing exactly what she set out to do. It got on my nerves a bit. But she really was kind and good and her interactions with the people of Glenlyon was awesome! Watching her soften towards Malcolm and come to care for him was perfect.
Malcolm was kind and gruff and everything you'd expect from a Highland warrior. He had a bit of a sense of humor and was quick and easy to show his affection.
This was my first by Michelle McLean and won't be my last :)
*thanks to Tasty Book Tours for sharing a copy of this with me*
All my favorite tropes are exquisitely combined in this delightful romance.
Scottish Highlanders? Check. Forced Marriage? Check. Enemies to Lovers? Check and double check!
Sorcha and Malcolm are forced by King Charles to marry with only two hours' notice, in order to put an end to the generations-long fighting between their two clans. Despite being instantly attracted to each other when they'd met the day before without ever knowing each other's names, neither wants to marry their sworn enemy. They've got to go through with the wedding - but nothing was said about them STAYING married!
Like the Kate Hudson movie, both Malcolm and Sorcha have their own agenda and reasons for wanting the other to seek an annulment. This part is brilliantly executed, with neither one wanting to trust the other, yet in the social setting of a Highland castle there's a lot that brings them closer together and forces them each to reconsider their futures. There's plenty of steam between these two, and many laugh-out-loud moments as they each try to derail the other. Ultimately, it turns out that not all is what it seems, and there's a common enemy that's at the root of all the hostilities.
The author does a fantastic job of creating characters that are relatable and authentic, especially the main characters, while also giving us secondary characters who are well-developed and contribute significantly to the overall story progression. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this book and devoured it in one sitting. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves Highlander romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
i always love a scottish highland novel, even though i'm kind of iffy on men in kilts. regardless, malcolm macgregor from how to lose a highlander is super dreamy. even though he is trying his best to be an irritating tyrannical husband in order to drive the wife he didn't ask for away. he wants to make her so crazy that she'll demand an annulment.
unfortunately, sorcha campbell is made of stronger stuff. this marriage was demanded by the king to cease the constant complaints and border raids between their two families. she might have spent more time in the royal courts at edinburgh, but it doesn't mean she can't hold her own in a highlander holding. besides, she also plans to make life miserable for malcolm, by being a shrew of a wife.
except he keeps charming her and proving that maybe the hatred for the macgregors instilled in her at birth might be misguided. and as the macgregor clan accepts her as their laird's wife, she begins to feel like she's finally found the home she never knew she was looking for with the most unexpected man.
as sorcha and malcolm let down their guards and reveal their true selves to one another, the bonds between them grow stronger. and when things between their two clans come to a head, the true test of their marriage will be whether or not that bond is unbreakable. they have a lot of reasons not to trust each other, but maybe what they have is something real and true and lasting.

Aye, I enjoyed this Highlander Romance verra verra much.
Sorcha Campbell and Malcolm MacGregor are the protagonist in this very lovely historical romance. Their families have been sworn enemies for who knows how long so the new King arranges a marriage between the two of them in hopes of putting an end to the feud. Sorcha and Malcolm had briefly met at court and been drawn to each other but that was before they knew they were flirting with the enemy. They both try to trick each other into asking for an annulment. Plenty of sparks and other objects were flying between them. It wasn't long until they realize that they both may have been wrong about a few things. It took a while for them to give in to their feelings. There was some tension when someone from Sorcha's clan showed up to stir up trouble and sow the inevitable seeds of dissent.
I loved this great book from Michelle McLean. ! It is a series starter for The MacGregor Lairds Series. Readers are introduced to the hero who will be in the next book so I can't wait for that one. I recommend this book to everyone. Happy Reading !
I received a complimentary Netgalley copy from the publisher and voluntarily reviewed this book.
I love a story that has the two, main characters at odds with each other as they unwittingly fall in love, all the while digging in their heels and trying to resist their pull towards each other. This delightful theme always provides lots of laughs and plenty of sparks, and this book and its characters were no exception.
The chemistry between Sorcha and Malcolm was palpable and simply electric. The banter between them kept me laughing out loud. It was endlessly entertaining "watching" the two of them antagonize and try to repel each other so as to cause one of them to ask for an annulment. The harder they fought to put a wedge between themselves the more they seemed to be drawn together, which was maddeningly frustrating for both of them. But, once they capitulate and surrender to their burgeoning feelings all bets are off!
I think this is the start to a very intriguing and promising series, and I am very eager to read more in this line.

"How to Lose a Highlander" by Michelle McLean tells the story of Malcolm and Sorcha, forced to wed to alleviate tensions between two families. While not overly happy with this scenario, the two fight their attraction for each other and try to one up the other throughout. It does make for some fun times but I did think it went on a little too long. Sorcha is a feisty one, not the typical timid lady often found in historical tales. While I liked her feistiness and sass, I did feel it went a bit overboard at times. Malcolm, our sexy Scottish Hero, is just that - sexy! I liked him a lot and his treatment of Sorcha impressed me, even when she might not have deserved his kindness and patience. Throughout the tale, there are some tears shed and some chuckles here and there. This is an enjoyable read that, while maybe not over the top exciting with adventure and not overly HOT, it was still fun to watch Sorcha and Malcolm maneuver their way on their journey. Ms. McLean, a new author for me, did impress me and I look forward to reading future (and past) works by her. (received copy for honest review)
