Can love be written when Tyler and Liz are on different pages?
After Liz Montgomery dumped “Mr. Perfect” four days before their wedding, she built herself a new happily ever after – A.K.A. workaholic. Between grad school, a demanding job, and helping with Happy Moments Charity events, she has determined not to let relationships stand in the way of her dreams again. But one wrong step throws her unwittingly into the arms of a stranger who could threaten her plans.
New York Times bestselling author Tyler Lakewood is in town to complete one job: interview family and friends for NFL star, Kyle Montgomery’s biography. When an opportunity to help Liz with Kyle’s charity events turns the page of his plans, he goes to great lengths to ensure Liz sees him as Mr. Right.
While fighting her mounting attraction for Tyler, Liz accepts Tyler’s help. Soon she can’t deny he has already written on the pages of her heart. When plans for the annual charity ball unravel, she must decide whether to close the book forever or let him write the happily-ever-after ending she’s always dreamed of.
Mr. Write is Book One in the sweet, contemporary romance series: Sundaes for Breakfast.
This is an enjoyable romance, though it is pretty rocky. The main draw is the central couple—as it should be. Liz and Tyler are engaging and I liked how well they fit together. A little too much of their understanding happens off-page, but since it involves writers appreciating each other's writing, I can't see how to change that.
Holding the story back, the plot is inconsistent and a lot of the conflict comes down to Liz and Tyler not talking. Yeah, they're busy and that's pretty believable, but it doesn't take much to confirm a suspicion or verify an impression or just ask a clarifying question. So much of the conflict feels unearned and their uncertainty felt artificial as a result. We know from at least halfway in that they're right for each other and we know they both feel it. So drawing that out solely on them being too busy to connect (and letting misreads persist) was painful.
And it doesn't help that many of the events felt completely random, making the story feel fractured or incomplete. A lot of that happened around Liz's roommates whose intrusions came at odd moments and diverted the story into odd paths. They're obviously set to feature in their own future stories, so I can see why Hale wanted them present. It just came across as disjointed and that made me start asking questions that brought me out of the story further (like, since Liz is obviously from a privileged background, why does she need so many roommates?).
Anyway, this is a decent freshman effort. Hale handles the basics well and I enjoyed the dialogue and characters. I hope future work does better with story cohesion and pacing. Oh, and that she doesn't lean so heavily on not communicating to draw things out.
A note about Chaste: This is super-chaste in that we only get a couple of kisses and little more.
A note about Missing-Faith: It's pretty clear by the mid point that they're beyond interested in each other and we have kissing and the beginnings of an intimate relationship. In other words, to the point where most contemporary readers will expect more physical intimacy. That things didn't progress further was jarring, and that they didn't even talk about it was odder, still. This is particularly evident when Liz heads to Tyler's home-town and living arrangements aren't even addressed. At the stage they were in, you'd expect him to at least offer to put her up and to discuss what that'd mean. Also, a lot of their dating featured scenes that are familiar to those of us who worked hard to develop intimate relationships where sex was explicitly off the table until marriage. So this is almost the definition of my missing-faith tag as you have people who are behaving as if sex doesn't exist as an option despite not having any evident reason for that to be the case. It's awkward and will make this story hard to relate to for non-faith-based romance readers—not because it's chaste, but because there's no visible reason for them to behave the way they do.
I picked this book up on recommendation from a different author whose books I enjoy. I'm glad I did. This was a sweet, clean romance. I loved the first meeting and the end the best. I wish I would have had felt more of the attraction, the butterflies of a new romance, but overall this was a good one. I'll be picking up the next book!
I've had my eye on this book and series for a while now...since the print book came out. I always wondered what the Sundaes for Breakfast referenced. And now I know! I love it! It was a tradition between the main character and her roommates. While listening to this and the scenes with her roommates, it brought back lots of fun memories and traditions that I had with my roomies. Those were great times and I'm grateful for their friendship. I'm looking forward to the other books in this series so I can see how the roommates stories unfold.
This story had a fun beginning and it just kept going from there. Liz and Tyler's meeting was cute and funny and very embarrassing. But I loved it! And I loved how the author tied it into the story later on.
Liz has a lot on her plate and she loves her family a lot that she supports them in many different ways. Even when it means putting aside a dream she's held onto and is so close to achieving.
Tyler was a great character and I loved how he was able to blend right in with Liz's family. There are some ups and downs in Tyler and Liz's story but I loved how they kept moving forward and working through those ups and downs.
Lots of fun scenes. Some scenes that were sad and had you aching for the characters. But all in all, a fun read/listen. Especially for football fans and writing fans.
This book brought me back to my younger days. The possibility of love and the thrill of finding the "one". A book for the romantic! Love that it was a clean romance, a book that teenagers can read without having to worry about the content. There were parts that felt repetitive and a bit long winded, but overall it was a good read.
I leave it to others to heap deserved praise upon Ms. Hale for “Mr. Write.” However, I feel it is beneficial to the author if I offer an unbiased point of view that may seem overly critical, yet ultimately helpful. “Mr. Write” is a fun, clean, and generally realistic story with relatable characters. I cannot say, however, that it was a captivating read for me. The plot twists that were intended to be captivating came across as far too stereotypical and predictable for my taste. I was disappointed that Tyler allowed his agent to interfere with his relationship with Liz without significant repercussions. However, the unwritten boilerplate formula for romantic stories called for conflict at that point in the story, so using the agent to trigger that conflict filled the bill. A bit more originality at this point would have been fantastic. I also found more long-winded repetition than I liked. As a result, portions of the story seemed to drag for me. A rewrite that reduced the page count by about twenty-five pages would be an improvement. That said, I am in general agreement with the vast majority of reviewers who rated this offering four or five stars. This is a fun, clean, well-written story that will keep you looking for more.
This was a really cute and sweet romance. I loved the family dynamics involved in both of the protagonists relationships. The play on words for the title fit the story well and I loved the toe-curling romantic buildup between the hero and heroine, Liz and Tyler.
Mr. Write: A Sundaes for Breakfast, Book 1 By: Chelsea Hale
This is a sweet clean romance. Liz and Tyler meet in a most unexpected way. As they navigate through family, friends, work colleges to see if there might be a
relationship between them. There are misunderstandings, as well as stumbling blocks put in their way. The listener will hang on to the end to see if they find a
happily ever after.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Stacey Glemboski.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I have just finished reading Mr. Write, and was totally impressed with the storyline and the writing. It kept intrigued the entire time. I could not put it down until I finished reading the complete book, during which I laughed and cried at times throughout. Absolutely wonderful 💜💙💜
Rating this one 3.5 stars. I had a hard time getting into it. It was a bit too wordy for me, although overall it was pretty good. I would compare the style to Taylor Hart's books but hers are a bit faster paced. It's clean.
After finding Stacey Glemboski as a wonderful narrator, I was recommended to listen to this story, and I am so glad that I did! I love this story, it gives a real look a family dynamics and love. Liz work for the Happy Moments Foundation, founded by her football player brother and his wife. She is going to school but with work and school has put her dreams and ambitions on hold to help out and cheer her other brothers on as they play the game. When Tyler comes to write her brother's autobiography, sparks are flying between them and he tells her the sacrifice she has made! I loved this story, the two are sweet together, though at times, I was frustrated with their communication. I truly felt Liz's plight. I know it's hard to say no, especially when it's family, and you want to do what's best for them. Chelsea Hale truly brought the best out of Liz as the story went on, and showed her the path to her own happiness. But will that path include Tyler? Give it a listen and you will see!
Stacey Glemboski is a wonderful storyteller! This is my third narration by her, and every time, it's an enjoyable listen. Her pace and voices are impeccable and make the story come to life. I will be looking for more books by her in the future.
I've been listening to a number of romantic suspense and historical romance audiobooks lately. I needed a break and was in the mood for something different. So, when scrolling through my collection I came across Mr. Write which, as a contemporary romance, fit the bill for 'different'. Plus it's always nice to check out a new-to-me author.
The first book in Chelsea Hale's Sundaes For Breakfast series is a truly sweet romance. With its romantic ups and downs it reminded me much of a Hallmark movie, but with a strong faith element. I liked both Liz and Tyler, though, at times I just wanted to shake them both. I don't come from a sports-minded background so I appreciated that the sports element, Liz's family is big into football etc., while present, is not the driving force of the story.
As previously mentioned, I listened to the audiobook of Mr. Write. I felt the narrator was a good match for Chelsea Hale's characters and the sound quality was good. So, if you are in the mood for a sweet contemporary romance you should check out the first Sundaes For Breakfast title...
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
This story is beautifully narrated, the character voices are clear and convincing. The pace and tone of the narration are a great match for the emotions and activities of the story.
The story is not quite what I was expecting, it's like a historical romance that's written in the modern era. The romance is very clean and chaste and there's nothing in the book that give a reason for that.
That said the romance is quite sweet, the main characters had a strong connection and the writing is well done. There were some humorous moments that made me laugh and some sad bits that made me cry, it was easy to connect with emotionally and was easy to listen to. A good book for a lazy afternoon.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
This was a cute little romance. It had its ups and downs, though I did get tired of the constant struggle of the heroine with her lack of personal confidence. I understand how her history impacted her views of herself, but it came up so frequently that it did start to get somewhat repetitive. The hero had his own issues, but he seemed nearly perfect, as he did not seem to let his get in the way of his goals the way the heroine did. He almost seemed a little too perfect.
I also found myself thinking a few times that this could have used an additional edit. Several times the word choice was poor or used an incorrect homonym. There were some poorly edited sentences as well. It was enough for me to notice, especially in a book about an English major dating a writer. It seemed too out of place to see these errors contrasted against the subject.
I’d recommend this book to someone who enjoys a good, clean romance. The story was fun, and the characters and plot were enjoyable. If you are an English grammar nerd, watch out, but you’ll probably enjoy this anyway.
What a great read! Doing for others and putting their needs above your own can sometimes be a good thing, especially if you are part of a celebrity family. But it can also keep you from reaching important goals for your own life. And hearing the things that matter directly from the owner of them is a necessity if a busy life is to stay on track. Sometimes you need to receive help rather than be the cheerleader for everyone else. All of these lessons needed to come into play for Liz. Thankfully, she has a cheerleader or two of her own.
I got tnis book through a giveaway. No connections to the author or her publisher.
Such a great book, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and falling in love along with them. Liz is the supporting sister who has held back her own dreams to help her brothers find their dreams. She might have continued sacrificing forever without the interference of Tyler. He was hired to do her brothers biography and fell for her in the process. I love how these two met and the crazy adventures it took for them to realize that they loved each other. This was a great story and I look forward to seeing each of Liz's roommates find their happy ending as well.
I fell in love with all the characters in this story and am looking forward to reading more about each one of them! I loved Montgomery family and the strong parental role her parents had in helping their children grow and survive being in the spotlight. I appreciate stories with positive parental characters as they are so rare nowadays. I also love the stories that tell both points of view. I feel like I get the whole story in those instances. I would recommend this book to anyone enjoys a well written sweet romance.
At first, I wasn't sure I would like this because it seemed the emphasis was on football. I like football, but I didn't want an entire read on the subject. Since I needed a new book to read, I ordered it on my Kindle, and feel in love. It's a multilevel subject on so many levels, I can only say you won't be disappointed. I really like this series and this author!
A fun entertaining well written clean sports romance that was a great listening adventure. The storyline has some unfortunate misunderstandings, full of humor, has witty banter, great family interaction, it is lighthearted, while being smooth flowing and addicting as sweet love grows. The characters are well developed, interesting, and realistic. The narration does an incredible job of really bringing you into the story as I lost myself in the romance.
I enjoyed this audiobook. It is a cute story about a girl who has lost her ability to trust the sincerity of people after she found out her fiancé was more interested in her family connections than her. It’s also about a guy that has been so busy with his career that he has been too busy to get serious with someone. He goes to try something new in his career and is faced with the unexpected. A female that catches his eye. This is a sweet clean romance.
Another good read by this author. I am enjoying her books more and more with every read. I loved the continuation of Kyle's story as a side story. Fun idea with the roommates and sundaes for breakfast. Interesting story line with complex characters. Pretty predictable, but it was a fun journey. Excited to read the other books in the series. Clean. Appropriate for all ages.
I loved this book. Liz is tires of her brother trying to fix her up. She is running late, on purpose to avoid getting set up. She literally runs into a man and they get root beer and nachos all over them. When she finally meets up with her brother, she finds out he wasn't trying to fix her up. Read this great story about Liz and her family.
The book will give you all the feels, it made me laugh and cry. The characters are very believable and you can picture them and their event very well in your mind as your reading. I loved how everything happened and the misunderstandings that they had to overcome to find their love story.
I like the idea of having decadent sounding Ice Cream Sundaes for breakfast while having girl talk and sharing stories with close friends, and I would have liked to hear the whole story or all the stories of the night that started it. It sounded hilarious.
For a fun & clean romance series, read this first book about 2 writers who meet by chance. As the only sister in a family of football players, she forgets to follow her own dreams, but he reminds her. Sweet read! Can't wait for the next book!
This was a fun clean Romance. Tyler & Liz were perfect for each other. Tyler is a writer that is writing Liz's brothers biography. There first meeting is so cute not realizing each other's identity. They literally run into each other. This is a light, easy & fun read. I would rate it PG.
