A change of subject matter for this Jack Turner series. This is less about Jack and Rachel, and not the mystery suspense in prior books, but more about Jack's Grandfather, also named Jack Turner, as told by his beloved wife (Jack's grandmother).
Jack's grandfather was a fighter pilot for the British RAF, even though he was an American. But the reason he was really in England was to find someone he had just learned about, which was his identical twin brother. Why he was not told about his brother nor his own mother was a mystery he had to find out on his own.
Very good book. Very different from the previous two books, but since I’m attracted to WWII storylines and mild clean love stories, this was a winner.
Absolutely loved this book, it hit all my favorite genres, particularly WW II time frame. There was no awkward time frame changes & you are immediately captivated by the characters! All of them!! You worry about them, feel joy when they’re happy..... Eliot, Jack, Joe & Rachel all become your best friends! Especially when Jack & Joe are flying in dog fights! Each trying to best each other in #s of Nazi planes shot down...... many Thanks to the publisher & the author in allowing me to read & I freely write this review of the book!
I have never been disappointed in anything Dan Walsh has written. Though my favorite genre' to read is suspense, I still like his non-suspense novels better than his suspense, though he does a fine job of writing suspense.
This book was a bit different than the other two. Though this is labeled a Jack Turner Suspense novel, Jack Turner was not in the book much. The majority of the book is about his grandfather of the same name and his time in World War 2. The way the book was set up, Jack's grandmother was telling Jack's wife the story, and I wasn't sure I was going to like how the book went. I pictured a lot of back and forth between the two women, but it wasn't that way at all. It simply launched into the story of Jack's grandfather and there was no back and forth between the two women until the story was finished.
I did enjoy the book a lot, but I missed the action of the first book with Jack solving a mystery. That is not meant to be a criticism, as Walsh has written a great story, I just didn't think it fit in with the idea of the Jack Turner Suspense Series.
An interesting story related to World War 11, with well-developed likable characters. Most of the story is told through the eyes of young Jack's grandmother to his wife, Rachel, while Jack and Rachel are on their honeymoon. The delightful grandmother, Renee, is an epic storyteller and she tells about her life in France, her meeting a British pilot, Elliot, and then later meeting Elliot's twin brother, Jack, who was an American pilot who flew to England and joined up with the Air Force to fight against the Germans. His prime intention and goal was to search for and find his twin brother after his father told him that they were separated at birth. It was a delightful story but I was somewhat disappointed in the ending. It just didn't seem like a good stopping point to me; however, I love Dan Walsh's writing and this was the 8th book I have read by him.
Great writing, Mr. Walsh. Your dog stories were my favourites so far, but you write well in all the genres.
Dan Walsh has become my favorite author. I even enjoy his Jack Turner Suspense series. This one, as do the other two, deal with events during World War II and deals with Jack's grandparents as they met and fell in love. Even though it does have some romance within it, this one will still be a good read for suspense readers.
This is a great series for fans of suspense and historical fiction. Lots of action and drama. The third installment brings readers from the present and puts them into the middle of the action in Great Britain during WWII. Definitely a novel I recommend!
Even though Unintended Consequences is part of the Jack Spencer series (book 3) this book is a great stand-alone read. And that's how I will review it. I like both Jack and Rachel. They're smart and kind. When they stop by Jack's grandmother's home on their honeymoon, I find them even more endearing. After Jack heads home for a quick few days, Rachel settles in to visit with Grandma Renee. That's when the real tale is told. During WW2 Jack heads to England to find a long lost relative. At the same time, Renee flees there to avoid the attacks on France. The story is a little slow to start but once it does, it's filled with action, romance, and the realities of war. I found the perspective of fighter pilot's interesting. My dad was in the Army during WW2 and didn't talk much about it. He's was proud of his service, but I think the terrors of it all were too difficult to discuss. Although this is fiction, it's an interesting and fact filled story. If you've read the other Jack Spencer books, you'll find the history in Jack's family interesting. If you haven't read them, this book stands alone just fine. On this Memorial Day weekend as we remembered those who gave their lives for our freedom, I find this an appropriate and entertaining read. I received a free copy of Unintended Consequences from the author.
This was fantastic romance spanning parts of two centuries. I love how Dan Walsh weaves words, drawing us into the story. The following excerpt reminds me of the author. Rachel talks about Jack" Reviewers says this about his books, his story telling ability. When he tells a story, he makes history come alive." Keep up the good work, Dan Walsh. Your stories brighten my day.
Jack Turner and his wife, Rachel, are visiting his grandmother on Cape Cod when their honeymoon is interrupted. Jack must return to the college where he is a professor. His bride stays behind with his grandmother, Renee Turner,—and the story begins. As you might expect from her name, Renee is from France. How she met Jack’s grandfather is the opening of an amazing plot. Prior to the United States’ entry into World War II, Jack’s grandfather had a compelling reason to travel to England. As Renee shares her story with Rachel, the suspense of the pre-war Nazi movement kept me glued to the pages. When event after event occurs, plot twists grow ever more startling. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next. The majority of Unintended Consequences takes place in the World War II era, which should be great news for history fans. True to Walsh’s earlier novels, however, a heart-warming romance is woven throughout the book. Unintended Consequences is an absorbing read. Though this is the third book in the Jack Turner series, it’s not necessary to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. Suspense and romance fans will love it.
I HAVE YET TO READ A DAN WALSH BOOM I DIDN'T LOVE!!!!
And this is another hit!!!! I love series because you really get to know the people and feel as if they are your friends! This is an excellent example of this. In book 1 we meet Jack Turner and during his adventures he meets Rachel. In book 2 we watch their relationship grow into marriage. Book 3 finds them on their honeymoon and together with Rachel, his grandmother tells us the exciting story of Jacks war hero grandfather!! He was truly exciting, as was his grandmother!! You will set breathless as it teaches us world history. It truly comes alive and you feel as though you were going thru the war with Jack (the grandfather) and Renee as their relationship grows, as Jack finds a brother he didn't know he had, and as the win against the Nazis!! You won't want to put it down!!!! You will throughly enjoy this one if you haven't read books 1 & 2, however, you will enjoy it more if you read those first!!! What a great excuse to buy more books!!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!! C:o) MCELWOLF
Unintended Consequences wil make you a POW of fabulous WWII fiction.
No, really. When I got the opportunity to read Dan Walsh’s new book, Unintended Consequences, I had no idea what to expect. I’d never read anything by him before—no clue even to the genre. But I accepted the offer of a complimentary copy, dove into the book, and began reading.
This WWII suspense-slash-romance-drama? Fabulous. I really did love the book. Loved it so much that I bought a copy despite having been given one.
Though the third in a series, Unintended Consequences stands alone quite well. I didn’t get too much “rehash” of prior books—no info-dumps that really overdid it or anything.
The primary story, set in WWII includes all the best parts of stories that we love from that era—brave American soldiers/pilots, English settings, intrigue, good vs. evil. Oh, and of course, romance. Walsh weaves them all into the tale without overdoing any of it. Rich, well-rounded characters, believable and interesting scenes combine with a story that captivated me from the moment we met Jack Turner on the ship on the way to England.
Oh, and one of my favorite parts—history so seamlessly woven into the story that it never feels forced. That's one of my pet peeves—almost as bad as preachiness in Christian Fiction
With all this praise, I should throw out a few caveats.
For those who are sticklers for historical tone, this book will jar you out of the story now and then. The modern use of “totally” and similar things did definitely jerk me out of the reading experience. Frankly, most of the time I would have been bothered enough by it that I would not have been able to truthfully say, “I loved it.”
But I did. I loved it.
For those who dislike when stories lapse into “telling,” well, now and then it happens here. But honestly, that’s a part of historical fiction. He doesn’t overdo it, and except for a couple of repetitive places, it wasn’t excessive or annoying at all. But there you have it. If it bothers you—it is in there a time or three. Just saying.
Oh, and the original copy I received had several typos that will bother some readers, but they might have been corrected by the final copy.
Did I mention I loved it? The family history, the difference and similarities in characters, the difficult times and the joys? I loved it all. I loved how he made implausible parts, well, plausible. And that’s my favorite part of fiction—when the implausible becomes so real it is plausible.
And yes, Unintended Consequences held me as a POW for the duration of the book—or at least the majority of it. I think anyone would be captivated by a tale often told but never too often. Something about this book makes you more than happy to be a prisoner of this retelling of one tiny sliver of the war.
I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good WWII story, a genuine romance, and enough suspense to keep you turning pages but not so much you won't stay awake all night.
Reviewer note: The publisher's synopsis would never have enticed me to read the book, so don't be dissuaded by it.
The Jack Turner Suspense series by Dan Walsh is a great choice for those who love suspense with a little history thrown in. The third book in the series, Unintended Consequences, is almost all WWII action and intrigue. The love story of Jack’s grandparents is introduced as newlyweds Jack and Rachel make a stop at Jack’s grandmother Renee’s home during their honeymoon tour. When Jack is called away on some university business, Rachel settles in for the exiting tale Renee spins. The story revolves around American-born Jack Turner as he sets off to join the RAF before America enters the war. He is also on a quest to discover the truth behind his mother’s death and the chance to find his twin brother. While that intriguing story is enough to make this book, Walsh adds the thrill of dogfights during the Battle of Britain, a wartime romance, and a daring escape. My husband and I listened to the audiobook which was again expertly read. We both loved this book — action combined with great storytelling make this one a recommended read from both of us.
Recommended.
Audience: adults.
(I purchased the audiobook from Audible. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)
Jack and Rachel Turner are finally on their honeymoon, and they decide to pay a visit to his grandmother Renée. Jack wants Rachel to hear his grandparents’ story and how they met prior to the United States entering into World War II. Renée’s tale has it all: family secrets, romance, and danger.
This is the third installment in the “Jack Turner suspense series,” which all have a focus on WWII, but it can be read as a standalone. The scales tip in favor of suspense vs. romance, which I loved. This book focuses on American soldiers and pilots during the war. The characters are well rounded, and the historical details are smoothly woven in as Rachel learns Renée’s story. As in past books, Walsh’s storytelling ability is top-notch, and he crafts characters which bring history to life. The fear and tension are palpable in the vivid detailing. Readers will likely be excited to know that book four is in the works!
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.
If you love World War II stories, you will love this one. The third in the Jack Turner Suspense series, this story takes a different twist from the others. Jack and Rachel visit his grandmother on their honeymoon. His grandmother tells Rachel the story of how she and Jack’s grandfather met during the early stages of the war. The story is intriguing and suspenseful, as she tells about his grandfather flying fighter planes for the British Royal Air Force. The action in the air as he fought the Germans was only a part of the excitement. His grandmother experienced some exciting and stressful events, including being arrested by the Germans. If I say any more, it might spoil the story for others. Their dependence on their faith in God had a significant impact on their story. I look forward to more stories about Jack.
I seldom find a book that combines my great loves, Christian-based, historical, stories of love and suspense that will keep you on your toes while it plucks your heart strings. That they turn to The Lord in prayer, for guidance in their times of need, is a much sought-after response that we seldom find in really good literature these days. I could not be more pleased. I felt I had been dropped right into the middle of World War II with folk much like myself that loved God, cared about others, and would even risk their very lives to make that loved one safe and secure. The suspense sections and descriptions of the wartime world were incredibly well-written. You simply cannot miss this book!! Acolaids to Dan Walsh, and know that Nicholas Sparks' books pale by comparison!! Seriously!!
Dan Walsh NEVER disappoints. Though not deep and dense reading, it was a wonderful story with some returning characters and a step back in to history. I love WWII themes as my dad was a fighter pilot too. This was a story that drew me in and allowed me to go back in time and live thru the perils with the characters. What I most love about Dan Walsh is his books are clean and always have a redeeming though realistic message. I passed on one of his books to a friend who doesn't like to read. She enjoyed it so much she is reading his other books, AND joined a book club entering one of his great reads! Thanks for always giving me a book I know I will love. This was no exception.
Professor Jack Turner and his girlfriend Rachael get married. They go on their honeymoon and stop at his 87 year old Grandmother's so she can meet Rachael. She lives on Cape Cod. Jack gets am emergency call from the University that is needed back for two days. The guest speaker he arranged for was injured. The taxi he riding in on the way to the airport was t-boned. Jacks asks his Grandmother to tell Rachael how she met her husband and what transpired. She was French and it's when the British were fighting Hitler WWII. Before the U. S. got involved. There so much more to this story and many characters. There's danger, action, love and faith. I I also read Remembering Dresden another book in this series. That was also good.
Well, it’s official Jack and Rachel got married and are on their honeymoon. Meet Jack’s Grandma. Rachel gets to hear, first hand, Jack’s grandparent’s story. It’s a story set in war torn France and England as Hitler’s Nazi troops are ravaging Europe. You can definitely see where Jack Turner gets his love for history and storytelling. As with Dan Walsh’s other books it is great to have a story that meshes current times with history. Walsh does another great job of putting detail in this story that shows the research he has done to make a great historical novel. Being a person that loves to Google to “read up” about details throughout these books, I was not disappointed. While being different than the previous Jack Turner books, this one will keep you riveted from cover to cover.
Wow! That was an incredible story! Jack and Rachel are on their honeymoon when Jack is suddenly is called home on an emergency. Rachel stays at his grandmother's home where Renae tells Rachel the amazing story of how she and husband met.
The original Jack Turner had just recently learned a shocking family secret that he had twin brother in England. The only way he could learn more about him and to meet Elliott was for Jack to illegally join the Royal Air Force.
I'll try not to give away anyway spoilers but Jack was successful in finding his brother. Best of all he met the woman of his dreams, Renae who was part of the French Resistance. War is always dangerous and it was no exception for Jack and Renae. There was some spine-tingling moments that brought this book to a closure.
This is a compelling story within a story. Jack and Rachel finally got married and are on their honeymoon. Unfortunately, Jack was called back to the university to handle an emergency.
Rachel stayed behind with Jack’s grandmother. That’s when the second story starts. And it’s full of action. I didn’t want to quit reading. Forget about meals and bedtime. This book had to be finished first.
There are some surprises in both stories. I never want to leave Jack and Rachel behind.
Thank you, Mr Walsh. I’m looking forward to reading more about Jack, Rachel and their adventure.
Jack & his new wife Rachel are traveling through New England when they make a stop at his Grandmother's house in Cape Cod. Once there Jack receives an emergency call from his university saying he is needed for one day to fill in for a speaker who is ill. While Jack is gone his Grandmother tells Rachel the story of how she and her deceased husband met during WWII and all that they went through to be together.
This was a wonderful story of love that shows that sometimes things do not turn out the way you expect them too. I loved the story of Rachel's grandparents and enjoyed Jack and Rachel too. I am presently reading the first book in this series.
Unintended Consequences (Jack Turner Suspense Series, Book 3) by Dan Walsh
This book was a good read.. We first met the main character, the grandmother Renee, when Jack and Rachel Turner went to visit her while on their honeymoon. She is the one who tells this story over a period of a couple of days to Rachel. We get hooked right off the bat when we travel with Jack across the Atlantic going to join the British RAF. He is on a personal mission and the mission is the basis of the story. I couldn't wait to see what would happen to Jack and eventually to his twin brother, Elliott. I was not disappointed. There was just enough suspense to make this a page turner.
I see that this is part of a suspense series, but I wouldn't call this book particularly suspenseful. It did have a good romantic story set in WWII era though.
Jack and Rachel Turner have planned to stop at his grandmother's while on their honeymoon. Jack particularly wants Rachel to hear the story of how his grandmother and grandfather met. But shortly after they arrive, Jack gets a call that sends him back to where he works to cover a conference. Jack insists that Rachel stay and hear the story--so most of the storyline/plot takes place during WWII years and in France and England--with a different Jack Turner as the main character.
I absolutely loved this book, with most of it being set during WWII! It had a different premise than the other books in this series, but I thought it was a great change of pace from dead bodies. My only complaint is, like other books in this series, it has several sentence structure or punctuation errors, especially beginning a sentence with the word Although and erroneously placing a comma directly afterwards when it isn’t necessary. Come on, editor! And I’ve also noticed that Lake Sampson is spelled as Lake Samson in the next and newer Walsh detective series. Even so, this book really resonated with me and I loved the story!
The Jack Turner series got even better. After book 2, I didn’t think that possible, but it did. Introduced are more members of Jack’s family. Renee, Jack’s Grandmother has an exciting story, set during World War II.
From the first bomb dropped on France, (Renee’s home) to Spitfire dogfights, the bombing of London and the French resistance movement, the story kept me on the edge of my imagination. Tension, fear, love, hatred all experienced as the pages turned.
I couldn’t put the book down and lost sleep. Exciting and fast-paced story.
Set in WWIII in the Battle of Britain, amid the German aggression, and French resistance, an unbelievable thing occurred when the outcome unfolds. A member of the aristocracy forbid his daughter to marry an American pilot. Yet beyond all odds, in the middle of the war, relationships are revealed, love blooms, and one man goes to unbelievable ends to find a brother he never knew he had. Will the s sins of the father keep history from repeating itself? You have to read it to see. This is a new favorite author for me!
Sometimes when I read suspense filled books I become weighed down with worry as I live through horrendous circumstances with the characters. In this book one of main characters is telling her grandson’s young wife how she met and married American RAF pilot, Jack Turner, in the midst of World War II. I learned details of Nazi domination and cruelty as well as Resistance in France, American pilots who joined the Royal Air Force to defend England, and more, all without biting my nails since I knew the main characters survived.
