Kenya Daniels has led a life filled with missed opportunities. Now at the age of fifty-one she’s a lonely woman with two adult children who don’t need her, a mother who needs her too much, and a job that doesn’t give her the credit she deserves. One day things take a turn towards the impossible and Kenya finds herself transported back to 1982 as a sixteen year old. Kenya must navigate through the 80s--again, with the knowledge and experience of a fifty-year old woman, while trying to find the way back to her original time. This Pepper Pace novel mixes humor, family, heartache and love with the twists and turns that Pepper Pace does so well. Everyone loves the 80s…unless you have to relive them.
Pepper Pace is the pen name used by the author. Born and raised in Cincinnati, she has always enjoyed creativity. At a very young age, Pepper had a gift for art and would spend most of her spare time drawing images that she later began adding stories behind. Soon writing became more important than the illustrations and though she still loved art, it took a back seat to her real love.
Pepper wrote her first novel when she was 12 years old and had written 2 more by the age of 18. Too shy to share her work with anyone, Pepper stock piled her many stories into notebooks until she came upon Literotica.com and was compelled to share her craft.
Pepper became instantly popular and won several awards each year in which she submitted a story to the site. After receiving popular feedback, she grew in confidence and created a popular blog entitled Writing Feedback where she encourages her readers to interact with her on topics concerning, music, writing, art and pop culture, and can be contacted at her blog: pepperpacefeedback.blogspot.com/
Pepper lives in Cincinnati where many of her characters also reside.
This was trippy. I really liked Kenya (and her mother was fantastic) and Bill was an odd delight. The entire idea of going back and reliving HS was nightmare fuel but Pepper Pace made it entertaining as always. I loved a fifty something woman getting a do over that had nothing to do with an old flame. This would have been a five star read if we had gotten more than a few months of Kenya's life.
Pepper Pace has the ability to get me to read stories that maybe I wouldn't ordinarily read. I love her writing, her storytelling, her very own way of getting to me. I needed to read this book at this particular time. I love reading for this very reason!
The book's subject, basically time travel, was interesting BUT this is a Pepper Pace book and I was waiting for this ultra sexy, loving Romance to happen. There is NO romance. I don't like SciFi so I was unhappy. The Epilogue gives you the HEA that finally happens but I was like.... WTH!!?? Really?? You can let your kids read this one.
An urban city "change your life" time-traveling book. Has a lot of modern themes dealing with sexism and race relation. The story has a big secret throughout but since the book is mostly single threaded, it's fairly obvious what is behind the transport of the people into their pasts. The love story isn't very deep and left to the end. And there is quite a bit of story associated with self sacrifice for the greater good (family).
Found this in a list of time travel books. I'm a sucker for a time travel book. In this one, the protagonist is a 50 year old woman (so am I!) who gets a chance to go back to being 16 years old and change things. While I have ZERO interest in doing that, it was neat to see through her eyes all the things that happened in that time period and all the things that had NOT happened yet. I was so into the story that I didn't even mind the total lack of romance. My only complaint is that it was over too soon and I would like to have had a little more time/explanation. Also, I didn't know when I started reading but it takes place in Cincinnati, where I live, so that was an added bonus.
The concept was good, but the execution was poor. First, there were numerous grammatical errors in the book. Second, there were factual errors that could have easily been researched and corrected - buying stocks years before the companies actually went public, calling some companies by real names, but calling Apple Macintosh when discussing it. Then, the ending definitely jumped the shark with some of the things that the main characters experienced. All in all, I'm shocked that this book got published as is.
Very interesting concept and book. What if you could travel back in your own timeline and keep your current memories intact? 51 year old Kenya does just that when she awakens one morning in 1982 as her 16 year old self and remembers everything that will happen in the future. What would you change? Would you use the good things (stock market) and change the bad (there is a lot of bad between the years of 1982-2016. Butterfly Effect meets Back to the Future meets Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure.
I really like this book. They story was fun to read had comedic relief. My imagination ran wild and it seemed like a something I could recommend to young adults. The relationships built were family and friendship. It was all about second chances while deal with a topic such as depression. The romantic relationship happened towards the end and was not the main focus. I like it was more of getting to know and love yourself.
I am always a Fan! Just started and finished reading and realized that I totally relate to Kenya! Didn't see the romance with Bill coming. Ms. Pace your writing is so fluid, my only wish is that the story lasted a little longer. I would have like to know what happened to Kenya's Mom and siblings!! Great writing!!
I bought this book without reading the synopsis. When it was time to read and I did read the synopsis I immediately thought of Back to the Future and Peggy Sue got Married.
I often think about what I'd say or do differently if I had the last 30-35 years to live again.
Ms. Pace wrote a beautiful story about learning from mistakes & regret.
I'm giving this four stars despite the big plot hole at the end - as someone else pointed out, you can't bury things in the future and then dig them up in the past - because the writing was good, the plot was engaging, and I'm always up for a good "wake up as yourself at sixteen and try to do your life better" book!
I listened to the author and read this book she had written a while ago. I am glad I did. I enjoyed the flow and writing of this story very much. There was a part I didn't care for but it didn't take away from my overall enjoyment. Well done.
Would it not be a great opportunity to go back and time and attempt to make a better.life for you and your family? I loved the realness of Kenya's story. A good going back in time story.
The idea of the story was interesting. I liked the book, but not the ending. It became confusing. Also, why did she have to include political subjects.
Great storyline.. kind of rushed the ending. Kinda makes me wish there were way more pages to explain the past travel and the future events that took place once they grew up. But I still loved the book.
This was a different take on time travel. The ending was a surprise. I hadn't figured out how they made it to the past. Interestingly the hero was sent back to the age of 8 while the heroine is 16. I can't imagine reliving high school but she is forced to. If you had to relive the past as a teen or a child, wouldn't you want the benefit of adult knowledge? Good sci-fi story.
Read, would have been 5 stars but I didn't care for the rushed ending which seems to be happening a lot with this author for some reason in her past few books, would have been nice to see what happened to other characters in the book like the mother, brother and best friend Bernice.
I been waiting for this kind of writing to come back to me, don't get me wrong I love me some Pepper Pace. But this book feels like you're starting from the beginning. PS. Thanks😊
