OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

Okay so we know now that Shinra and Sho have met face to face at Vulcan's workshop, and following the ambush by Dr Giovanni, Company 8 begin to train and research how they can face the Evangelists. When they discover that they are in the Nether, an abandoned subway system from before the Holy Sol Empire, they get permission to attack. But the Evangelists are ready for them, Company 8 have to work through a series of attacks separately while the Evangelists work to get Sho and Shinra together. I loved this volume. I've discovered I'm a bit of a sucker for a found family trope, and Company 8 seem to be continually proving themselves as just that, a found family. I feel like a lot of this volume was filler however, some of it didn't feel like it was particularly driving the plot forward but maybe I'm just at that point of the series. The next volume with Shinra and Sho facing each other should be a good one!

I'm so sorry Hinawa. But even your amazing sniper fight cannot wash away the stench of dumbass fanservice.

This volume could've been an easy 5 star. Considering the awesome fight by Haniwa and Shinra. Had the mangaka chose to redeem Tamaki after being the butt of an ongoing gag that was never funny in the first place.

But no, he made Tamaki accidentally strip naked and shove her tits and ass into the enemy's face. Yes, you read that right. In a life and death situation, Atsushi Ohkubo chose to dedicate an entire chapter to get a female member stripped naked, groped and fondled against her will.

It's not even cringey anymore. It's borderline abuse. It there was a volume to drop this series, this would be it.

Shame really. That Haniwa was BADASS in this. Fucking sniper canon.

Rating: 3.5 stars

Company 8 enters The Nether (old underground train tunnels) to attack the base of the White Clad. Lots of action and fighting. Due to this, the violence seems more extreme than in previous volumes. Firefighters are injured and some are killed. This volume ends with Shinra battling Sho (his little brother). The battle will continue in the next volume.

The anime follows the manga very closely, so if you have watched the currently available episodes there won't be any surprises.

I'm still amazed by the artwork and enjoying the story.

(Read as part of Omnibus Volume 3)

This was essentially one long fight featuring groups of Station 8 soldiers. It was good. There was some excellent character development and exposition. It was just short of five stars. Hard to say more without spoilers. The confrontation with Sho has begun.

Our brave heroes have ventured into the deep down dark deep down in search of the Knights of the Ashen Flame and, more importantly, Shō.

Enemies are everywhere and everyone has their own battle to fight. But seriously, ENOUGH WITH THE LUCKY LECHER LURE! It’s stupid, degrading, and not the least bit funny! I can forgive Arthur for being an idiot, but at least let Tamaki have some dignity!!

And on a side note, I ship Vulcan and Lisa~

This series has 34 volumes.

4/5 Stars (%80/100)

It was really good in general. There are some really cool fights, especially with Hinawa and Arthur. Despite being dumb Arthur is absurdly strong because of his imagination and he does not fail to put a smile on your face. We also get to see the results of Shinra's training. Moreover, through an Adolla Link, we now have more information about the fire that killed Shinra's family. I think it's going great but it is not flawless just yet.

3 1/2 stars rounded up.

Summary:

Fire has always been a thing of nightmares for many. In this world, people are at risk of spontaneously combusting and turning into Infernals. An Infernal wants only one thing - to destroy. They are no longer considered human. That is where the Fire Force comes into play. They must protect the people.

Company 8 has wandered into the Abyss – and that's not some metaphorical phrase. They are in real danger as they enter the underground caverns that have become (have always been?) the Nether. Each member of the team will have their own unique fight to face.

Review:

I think it's safe to say that I have mixed feelings about Fire Force Vol. 9. On the one hand, a lot of plot advancement is happening here (not to mention a lot of info we've desperately been waiting for). On the other hand, at least one of the fights in this volume made me want to scream – and not in a good way.

The good: This volume has several fights, though one in particular took my breath away. It was that perfect balance of tense and compelling. Okay, it didn't hurt that it had a character I love at the forefront (one who could use more attention, mind you). Likewise, we're finally learning more about the Andola bursts and about a million other things readers have been asking about.

The bad: Ugh. While there was a good fight in this volume, there's one that isn't...so great. It could have been a redeeming moment for how Tamaki has been handled this whole time. After all, she had somebody to protect and a reason why she couldn't afford to lose. But nope! The fan service came back into full swing during her fight, and it's SO BAD.

Highlights:
Manga – Shonen
Connected to Soul Eater
Lots of Action

Now that we are in the Nether, battle upon battle takes place offering ample opportunity for the likely and unlikely to showcase some of their skills. Does Arthur finally get redemption after his previous defeat? Does Shinra finally get to showcase the fruits of his labor after the training he and Arthur took with Benimaru? Will Obi and Hinawa have a chance to show their subordinates what hard work, determination, and experience really result in?

All those and more were handled with such finesse and expertise in this volume that it was one of the best volumes in the series in a while. That isn’t to say that previous volumes weren’t up to par, it’s just that this one exceeded the good scale on every single mark. It would almost be the perfect volume had it resolved all battles and the arc in this volume, but it didn’t. Thus it seems we are going to yet another volume for our fateful showdown and reunion between Sho and Shinra. In that regard, the ongoing devil’s footprints, random ties into a nebulous backstory, and some other devious demonic force at play in the background makes the volume one of the best at advancing our understanding of the lore of the world, while also making things even more interesting. How does the devil’s footprints, adolla burst, and the evangelist tie together remains to be seen, but with how everything is linked so intricately, I can only imagine that we are going to be wholly impressed when everything converges. It’s going to be fantastic.

Overall this is a great volume especially for giving the key players their moments to shine. I’m impressed.

Story 4,6/5
Emotionen 4,0/5
Charaktere 5,0/5
Zeichenstil 5,0/5
Lesegefühl 4,6/5
Gesamt 4,6/5

Fire Force continues the trend of being fun and interesting though the fanservice is getting a bit creepier.

Hands down the two best fights here are Shinra verse his brother and Hinawa. Both show off what makes them fighters, both explosive battles, and the ending to Hinawa battle with Arthurr is fucking fantastic. I'm also eager to see how Shinra can win his battle in the next volume and where do we go from here.

Tamaki's battle could have been great. We could have got a redeeming badass fight for her. Instead her boobs pop out, then she sits on a guys face, and then her pants somehow fall off making the guy's attention go haywire and then he loses...so stupid.

But besides the dumbass fanservice this was a pretty fun arc.

Amazing! The whole volume was basically 8th brigade fighting White Clad, except Maki, who was fighting in previous volume, but I was hyped! Thanks to Vulcan and training with 7th brigade, everyone got an upgrade and used it to fight. Loved it! Got to see the beginning of the ''boss fight''. Can't wait to see the continuation.

The fighting in the Nether is starting to get right in the thick of it. Our heroes are using all their skills to try to defeat the Evangelicals here. This volume was full of action and hilarity. Quite a few scenes had me laughing out loud or shaking my head. It was an exciting read and it's got me pumped for the rest of the series.

The fights were just too awesome this time. Almost the whole book was fights, and they were in general excellently illustrated and executed with panache. Even the fan service, while odious, is used for a gag that made me chuckle. I thought this was a great volume of shonen manga.

Just when you think that Tamaki will have “her moment,” Ohkubo drags her character into more fan service. I would give this volume a higher rating, but Tamaki’s characterization makes it so hard to like it.

I was gonna give this three stars because Tamaki’s fight was horrifically bad but then Hinawa’s was the best I’ve seen in the series so far. His emotional detachment paired with his fierce loyalty makes him a beautifully well rounded character.
